When I was 18 I got to drive a 1st Gen. viper for a couple weeks. The first time I took it out, there was a right turn on a red light goin up a hill. From a dead stop I accidentally spun it out lol. Not totally blaming the car, cause I was a kid without a ton of manual experience. But ya youβre on your own with vipers
I don't understand the hate these guys get.
They obviously know more about cars than like 85% of the people on this sub, but are more relatable to normal people.
Like James is pretty rich, and he's still talking about what it's like to daily a Miata and do a B16 swap. Sure he misses a few details, so do we lol. It's not meant to be 100% accurate and those super specific detail videos are boring as fuck.
I love their channel. It's always entertaining to watch. Better than a 20 minute "spec sheet run down".
Most memorable cars do kinda suck to own.
My dad owned a first gen Viper new, it was badass and he says it was a awesome driving experience but the interior was pretty much all the switchgear from a 90s Neon lol.
Of all the cars on the list, the biggest offenders are the Viper (uncontrollable), Pagani (costs as much as a nice home in California or a nice gently-used private jet), and Bugatti (price and maintenance costs leave you better off with a personal-size jet). Those mid-90s MBs are quirky but theyβre far more livable than the other cars despite their electrical gremlins, theyβre still very solid mechanically (but they have high mileage snow and are mostly worn out as a result).
Doug DeMuro was actually not too disappointed with his Viper, as long as you take it for what it is.
Dougβs Viper roundup
I have to say the cool cars that suck to own list should probably include just about any British-made sports car. I have done tons of work on a friend's DeLorean and it's quite honestly the worst put together car I have ever dealt with. People complain about Yugos being bad quality, but they're really not too bad, especially in comparison to a DeLorean. There's not really a single easy job on a DeLorean except changing the air filter.
I used to drive a lot of exotics and super cars for my job, and my absolute favorites were the Viper and the 997 Turbo. When the time came where I could finally afford one, I chose the 997 Turbo, because I knew if I got the Viper Iβd die too early.
I feel like mclaren was just scamming people with that mclaren f1 tire change procedure. Rent out a private track and hire a driver and engineers to 'dial it in?' Come on not even the most cutting edge race cars do that between wheel/tire changes
