Convert Document To SharePoint Wiki

hello in this short video I'm going to show you how to create wiki pages out of a document sort of convert your documents into wiki pages and see my other blog post about the pros and cons of this but if you want to have wiki pages rather than documents here's one simple way to get it done okay I'm going to use this portal design template as an example usually you'd be using a policies and procedures manual or own employee handbook or whatever to put into SharePoint but anything works fairly well from Word so let's just put this over the right-hand side of our screen over here and we're going to copy this table of contents first of all as the first step first step let's get the table of contents I can leave the appendix behind I don't need that and just ctrl C to copy I'm going to open up Excel here in Excel I'm just going to paste that table of contents and use the destination formatting so notice that I've got the multiple levels here one two I'm just going to use the top level headings as wiki pages so I'm going to capture those first of all let me pause while I clean this up but I'm just going to delete these subheadings in Excel okay now that I've got this cleaned up to just the top level heading ones I'm going to build the wiki index so I'm just going to use the concatenate formula the opening two square brackets which wiki's use for pages of course with these words here and the course closing square brackets and then drag that formula down and I'll get a quickie index as it were or table of contents so I'm going to copy that so I'll bring up my SharePoint site here it is the sandbox is where I'm working I'm going to edit my home page and add a link to the we'll call it policies and procedures any of that even though it's not what it actually is well this is procedures manual and save so let's start building it so go to the policies and procedures manual page I will create it so now we have a policies and procedures manual page I usually use the text layout one column with sidebar and for this page I might put some tips or instructions or who to contact around this and on the left hand side and control-v I recommend using text paste here even though that's from notepad it doesn't really matter but it's a good habit to get into now let's see how this starts to take shape so now I click Save now I have my policy procedures manual index now look this is where it gets interesting I can use this index now to create the pages that I need so let me just shrink this down a bit so that I have my policies and procedures manual on the right-hand side let's start with the introduction section click I create a page and the first thing is to copy this content control C and over here to paste it in and use paste as plain text change the layout to one column with sidebar and what we're going to do is on the right hand side in the sidebar we're going to put the index so bring that back up in my notebook notepad ctrl C minimize that get out of the way and control be to put it in this sidebar and as I said you could call this table of contents if you want and maybe make that into a heading 3 style now what I like to do is bold as I go here so the introduction is bolded that's the page we're currently looking at notice I didn't grab the header just the text I'll show you why when I save this page and I'll just maximize it the page name is displayed at the top of the screen so if I put introduction below it it becomes redundant I've got a lot of space there sometimes you have to do a bit of cleanup so let's just delete that extra space and save ok now what I'll do next there's number of ways to do this but how about you do it this way we'll edit this page copy the table of contents ctrl C stop editing this page now let's go to the build process page create set one column with sidebar paste now this is going to be the build process page and I'm going to bold that and I'm going to go to my document library again and here's the build process so again I'm not grabbing the heading 1 but I'll grab all of the subtext ctrl C come over here and control V and again it's plain text that I'm pasting so here I can go in and do cleanup and these are heading twos we can use heading 1 whatever you want so I'll do a little bit of cleanup to delete this and call them heading twos there's that extra space at the top again and save okay now notice what didn't happen here is we didn't get the SmartArt picture in here so let's just take a look at that process so the way I will do it here is I will just copy this image and I will paste as image so home so it's a SmartArt so I'll paste special here as a picture so now it's a picture there it is and now I can save picture as call it flow diagram it's a PNG now when I go back to this site I can edit again and I'll put that image in where it needs to go so insert a picture from my computer browse for it pictures there it is flow diagram and say okay you can resize it here if you wish which I will do the resizing as you see it's just a little bit wonky but it works okay and safe and then you carry on in in that way so edit this page copy the table of contents control see stop editing the page go to the next page create it layout one column a sidebar and this is the control B for bold control B for not bold and this is the company name portal structure page so let's take a look at that control V and so some of the headings they do come in not too bad you could just use the defaults here it's recommended that you still save as text and then go back and tidy it up so that's all you all you have to do
