[Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] family and everybody joining in at home we love you guys staff core leadership home groups we're so excited to get to join with you guys today in worship and praise to our lord we just uh we know that some of you as you're tuning in you're wanting to be here so bad and you're thinking about how much you miss your church family and even as you gather together as a home group you're just praying lord please help us to gather again lord there's so much that's going on help us lord to get through the storm and just this week i was walking around the church here and we also have a school smithtown christian school and i got a chance to talk to one of the role models in the faith for me growing up she was actually a former detention teacher now luckily i didn't go detention too much but she was one of my detention teachers and she encouraged me today with this word and i want to read it to you before we get started it's found in psalm 77 if you want to go there on your phones with me or in your bible starting in verse 19 it says this your way was in the sea and your paths in the mighty waters and your footprints may not be known you led your people like a flock by the hand of moses and aaron and just so you guys know the people of faith god's people have for thousands of years been encouraged by this because there was a time no matter what we're going through we know that we serve a god that at a time his people were standing between the armies of their enemies and an impassable ocean and unbeknownst to them god had already prepared the way that they could not see because it was in the midst of the sea and when they kept their eyes on him he delivered them and they could not see his footprints they couldn't show you where he was but he was there guiding them through the sea and the lord's going to guide us he's going to deliver us just like he's always done for his people he's going to show us what to do because he's a good shepherd and he loves us amen let's pray together and then we're going to join a worship lord we thank you that doesn't matter what we're looking at if it's an ocean lord you part it if it's a mountain lord you lay it low you prepare a straight way in the wilderness lord and you declare that your kingdom is here so lord may it now live in our hearts fill us with your holy spirit that we might be your people on this island wherever we are in our homes in our workplaces in our churches lord in our schools wherever we go help us to carry your love and your light because in the midst of turmoil lord you prepare the way a way that's always been there but that we can't see unless we keep our eyes on you to you be all glory and honor and praise for you alone are worthy of it in jesus name we pray amen let's just lift up [Music] did you feel the mountains tremble did you hear the oceans roar when the people rose to sin jesus christ the risen one did you feel the people tremble did you hear the singers roar when [Music] a mighty river through the nations when young and old will turn to jesus fling wide bring white new heavenly gates prepare the way of the reason lord open up the doors [Music] and songs that bring your hope and songs that bring [Music] do you feel the darkness tremble when all the saints join in one song and all the streams flow as one river to wash away our brokenness and here we see and here we see that guardian moving a time of jubilee is coming when young and old returned to jesus oh fling white playing wide new heavenly [Music] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] and here we see that god you're time of jubilees coming when young and old will turn to jesus fling white you heavenly gates prepare the way of the reason lord let's lift that one more time and here we say declare it here we see that god you're moving a time of jubilee is coming when young and old return to jesus clean wise bring why do you heavenly gates prepare the way yes [Music] singing [Music] upon let's sing that one more injustice together open up and open up the doors and let the music play let the streets freeze down [Music] [Music] dancers who dance [Music] man i feel so privileged to be alive during a time where we get to display what hope looks like at a time where we can display what faith looks like so many without generations and didn't have an opportunity to let their light shine i know there's struggle happening and i know we're sort of making our way through this season but man it's just so impressed on my heart that we got an opportunity to display hope [Music] we get a unique opportunity it's when it's darkest that the light shines brightest and man you you are the light you are the light of the world i believe this season is honestly about what jesus is doing through you this is a season where um the church every member of the church is being brought to a new level of activation there at home [Music] can't tell you how much we believe in what god's doing right there in the living room church this is a beautiful season for us i know it's a tough season but it's an opportunity there's a moment in history for us to rise up and be the church like never before there's a moment in history for us to display hope [Music] we are a people of hope and god i pray as we worship you as we spend time in your presence god as we pursue intimacy with you jesus i pray that you would be magnified let it be that this world sees you like never before then when they look at us they see you when they see what we're doing they'll see our good works that they'll glorify you in heaven be magnified in us just right now wherever you are just begin to pray that prayer over your life god be magnified through me be lifted up in me sit on the throne of my life [Music] you are the stone i'm just the setting god would you shine in my life thank you lord [Music] [Music] then from north to south and east to west we'd hear christ be magnified were the whole earth echoing his eminence his name would burst from sea and sky and from rivers to the mountaintops we'd hear christ be magnified let's sing this together over our lives today [Music] singing oh christ be magnified just let his praise arise christ be magnified in me singing oh christ be magnified from the altar of my life christ be magnified in me [Music] when every creature when every creature finds its inmost melody [Music] we'll sing christ be magnified oh singing oh christ be magnified just let his praise arise christ be magnified in me singing oh christ be magnified from the altar of my life christ be magnified in me [Music] be magnified in jesus oh i won't bow to idols i'll stand strong and worship you and if it puts me in the fire i'll rejoice cause you're there too and i won't be formed by feelings i hold fast to what is true if the cross brings transformation i'll be crucified with you of course death is just a doorway into resurrection life and if i join you in the sufferings then i'll join you when you rise and when you return in glory with all the angels and the saints my heart will still be singing and my song will be the same singing christ be magnified let his praise arise christ be magnified in me singing christ be magnified from the altar of my life christ be magnified in me a single christ be magnified just let us praise our eyes christ be you lord i'm one [Music] is on people of hope let's sing this together how wise oh how great is your love for me come on let's just release that in the atmosphere [Music] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Music] how you love me [Music] [Music] how [Music] heavenly father we marvel and we are amazed at how deeply you love us holy spirit of god help us [Music] to love the father son and spirit [Music] deeply we're amazed at your love father toward us i pray a day would come when you would be amazed at our love for you that nothing would interfere with it nothing would distract it or dilute it but it would be filled with affection and passion and intensity and most of all obedience obedience let's lift this song again and as you marvel at his great love for you may it ignite a new love in your heart for him and you would give expression to that let's lift this again how great is your love for me [Applause] [Music] how great is your love for me [Music] lord i'm amazed [Music] you [Music] foreign [Music] i want to take a moment right now god is enveloping you with his love maybe you don't really know him maybe you've never invited him into your heart into your life this is such a beautiful moment for you to say jesus i want you to be my savior i want you to be the lord over my life i'm gonna ask everyone in your home wherever you're listening here in the sanctuary just bow your head and i'm gonna invite those of you that are listening in this very sacred providential moment to receive into your heart into your life jesus christ to be your savior you have heard of him you've evaluated his teachings you've considered his example but you've never invited him into your life into your heart to be your savior the forgiver of your sins pray this prayer with me almighty god i come to you i know that you sent your son jesus to die for me for my sins as the bible says all have sinned and fall short of your standard there is no one that does good no not one the bible says so i repent and turn to you forgive me let your blood that was shed at calvary wash me clean i receive you into my heart into my life as my savior the forgiver of my sins and i receive you jesus as lord the ultimate leader of my life i give you not just my sins i give you my life and i will follow you all the days of my life it's in your name jesus i pray amen amen if you just prayed that prayer the bible says to as many as received him that's receiving jesus god allows you to become his son and daughter we want to see you grow mature and develop in your walk with god so on screen there'll be some things that will come up that will give you direction on how to continue to grow and mature with him amen i'm going to invite those who are here in the sanctuary with us the leadership we invited to be here in the sanctuary it's a limited amount because of restrictions and invite them to be seated and those of you at home or wherever you're listening sitting down your couch or your wherever you're at and encourage you just to hear now a message that the lord has placed upon my heart to communicate to you it comes from the book of jude that's a an epistle a letter in the new testament and this past week i was really stirred in my heart with a simple phrase that just kept coming to me contend earnestly contend earnestly now of course that comes from a portion of scripture that's found in the book of jude so i'm going to read jude chapter 1 and verses 1 through 3. it starts out this way jude a bond servant of jesus christ you know when holy scripture says a bond servant it doesn't say a slave a slave doesn't have a choice a bond servant has a choice he made a choice to be connected to christ it might appear as a chain because of his devotion and dedication but it genesis came from a freewill choice we choose jesus i choose to follow you i engage my will not as a slave but now as a son and as a daughter and scripture will define you that as a bond servant a bond servant because a choice was made and then a deep commitment to god jude a bond servant of jesus christ and brother of james because jude was actually a disciple not an apostle he was a half-brother to jesus to those who are called sanctified by god the father and preserved in jesus christ mercy peace and love be multiplied to you i pray that that would happen even now during this time as you're listening that god's mercy that you're settled in knowing you're forgiven you experience his mercy his peace that's that stability and his love that's that security in your relationship with god would be multiplied would expand in your life now here's where jude goes and he's really prompted strongly by the holy spirit and it's the same sense i had in my heart and you'll hear it as i deliver this message beloved while i was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation i found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints contend earnestly the word that's used there in the new testament here is to struggle to fight to be aggressive with great intensity that's why the translators will say earnestly contend there's a fight there's a struggle that you have to match that with a heart that is consistent and tenacious and purposeful in pressing forward with what your faith your faith now it's interesting that the epistle of jude precedes the final book of the new testament the book of revelation now that doesn't mean chronologically it was written exactly at the same time the book of revelation was probably penned about 90 a.d the book of jude probably about 60 or 70 a.d but it's interesting that they're so close because the motif or the theme that's built into the epistle or the letter of jude is this idea of the last days the last days i've been approached by many during this time they've asked me what's your eschatological view pastor your view of end times do you feel we're in the last days you know honestly i don't know i don't know it sure seems like a lot of things are coming together though a lot of prophecies that are contained in the old and new testament have been or are actually being fulfilled in this very moment so yes in my heart i feel the closeness of that reality are we in the last days i could conjecture or speculate and say it sure seems that way but one thing i am positive of is this we here are all in our last days yesterday i had the opportunity of connecting with my mom she's 94 years old and i said mom i really believe in my heart we're supposed to pray together so we went to a prayer garden and for about an hour hour and a half we just interceded and prayed together it was wonderful when i came back we were talking about the end days and i basically said that i said well no matter what uh we're in our last days she said well gary i know you're 62. you got about 30 years maybe left but i'm 94. but you know what i think of a great church father augustine he said this he said listen work as if christ will not return for a thousand years but live like he's going to return tomorrow may that be in our hearts so in this particular epistle of jude and what i feel the holy spirit placed upon my heart to communicate to all those that are listening here in the sanctuary at home is that we need to contend earnestly for our faith and we need to be tenacious and press in but in this very short epistle this very short letter he gives two warnings he gives a few challenges and one big promise so i'm gonna unpack that for you very quickly here are the two warnings the first he says in jude chapter one and verse one through three he indicates that a spirit of rebellion especially in the end days would be unleashed now you think of what's happening in our own society in our own culture a spirit of rebellion would be unleashed to the extent that even believers would begin to drift and move away from god it's a warning we're to be sobered by that we need to reflect on where we're at what's happening in our life and have certain things collided with us that begin to push us down the wrong path a warning of rebellion it's perpetrated by lies and deception within the context of society or our culture but even in this epistle he addresses it as false teachers within the church so we need to be good students of holy scripture we need to know the word so as we navigate through these times we won't be blown left and right and be steered off course a spirit of rebellion unleashed there would be compromise see today's compromise becomes tomorrow's rebellion compromise is you begin to slow down in following the lord last week if you didn't have the opportunity to hear the message pastor steven shared about following jesus don't follow fear don't follow anxiety don't follow disappointment don't follow compromise don't follow lust and jealousy and pride follow jesus follow him sometimes if you were to personify anxiety or fear it's like a voice inviting you come over here follow me you ought to be very anxious very fearful don't follow fear or anxiety don't lend your ear to its voice i'm gonna follow christ but here as well don't follow any voice that would seduce you into a temptation to compromise because compromise is you just start slowing down and following christ you start to slowly disengage and what happens you start to drift and a drifting is hitting even the body of christ today across the world and compromise evolves into not just backing away from following christ and drifting but it slowly turns your back on god and that's rebellion when you give god your back instead of your face that's rebellion when you decide you're going to go a completely different direction now that is the sober warning that is presented in this epistle and i believe the holy spirit challenges all of us no matter what season what stage we're at in our walk with god don't allow compromise to invade your heart today because it will evolve into rebellion tomorrow when you drift eventually you'll give your back to god so we need to stop and say no i'm not going that direction the second warning that he gives is there would be a gross abuse of god's grace a misinterpretation of god's incredible grace now we celebrate the grace of god it's the grace of god that brought us to christ it's the grace of god that brings mercy and forgiveness to you and to me but he indicates jude under the inspiration of the holy spirit that there would be an abuse of this grace it's recorded in verse 4 when it says that we would begin to turn it into a license to sin and to do evil and in hebrews chapter 10 it actually says don't insult the spirit of grace don't allow your mind and your heart to fall into a place of allowing yourself to interpret the grace of god is god overlooking sin no grace is god empowering us to overcome sin and so the warning is laid out for us and he gives some strong examples and he indicates that there was a pride that preceded the rebellion that then led to a fall you see it with the fallen angels they rebelled against god he gives another example with korah who was a priest who rebelled in pride against moses and fell and then another example balaam who was a prophet who rebelled against the spirit of the lord and deceived the people of israel and in his pride he rebelled and he fell what's pride it's you're independent you're self-reliant well what does that mean i should just uh be a zombie and what is what does surrender and submission to god mean then if how do i live my life without making my own personal decisions well surrender is saying i give up and submission is saying i will obey that is engendering responsibility so when you say i want you to be the lord over my life and i don't want to rebel against you god it means you want to submit to his purposes and his priorities and to his plan his purpose is what he intends to do his priorities are what he defines is important not society not even yourself and his plan is what he orchestrates and so we need to say okay that's what i want to do lord i want to be responsible you see lordship and commitment is married to responsible behavior but you're responding to god and saying i'm going to respond to what you are purposing here what you have as the agenda and the priorities that you've established what you say is important is going to be important to me what you value is going to be valuable to me see that's lordship now and then it translates in your everyday choices and decisions so you don't become an automaton or a robot you engage your will but it's in harmony with what he has deemed as important and valuable and significant his purpose and his plan and you can press in and discern that god doesn't want us to fall into these examples he gives us with the fallen angels with korah with balaam and he even gives the example of saddam gumura the immorality so much has fallen in our society so many things have skewed off course and god is telling us listen don't allow pride to get in see selfishness blinds you from seeing others pride blinds you from seeing god when you become prideful you don't think he has a standard or priorities that he wants you to live by you become self-reliant independent doing your own thing pride will lead you to rebellion and lead you to a fall here's a formula for falling overestimate yourself underestimate your enemy and you'll fall you overestimate yourself say well i'm okay i don't need to pray all that much or get into the word all that much and i'll catch you know what's going on in my church here and there everywhere i'll just you're drifting oh you're drifting be careful compromise will start flowing through your veins and your arteries and rebellion is right behind it so you have to be extremely careful and you have to say oh lord i want to make sure that i don't allow myself to come to a position of overestimating myself and underestimating the enemy you'll fall now those are the warnings here the challenges that are presented and i i'm going to ask you just given a ten of you don't don't hear this academically or intellectually or mechanically think of it relationally the first thing he challenges us to do in holy scripture here in the book of jude and i believe by the holy spirit is he says remember remember the teachings of the apostles in other words there's a point here of remembering doctrine now just not just doctrine and dogma and creeds but it's how you believe how you think because the way you think impacts your actions and your attitude and your disposition your conduct and your behavior so thinking is very important and he's basically saying there's going to be a a wrestling for your mind at this time the way you think so let it be saturated with the word of god the apostolic teachings the doctrine the way the new testament thinks think that same way read the bible study the bible memorize it internalize it personalize it have to we're exhorted that's a challenge especially in the end days and when it comes to remember it's interesting that in the context of the bible remember isn't so much the issue of thoughts just coming to mind and you recall them it has to do with obedience in deuteronomy 8 it says you have forgotten the lord now that's like the antithesis of remembering right you have forgotten the lord because you no longer obey him that's deuteronomy chapter 8 and verse 11. so really to forget is not a loss of memory it's a loss of obedience in a biblical context so when we say remember the lord it's to engender obedience and action not just something cerebral i'm going to remember the lord i'm going to obey him the second is build yourself up jude exhorts us to do that by the holy spirit build yourself up in philippians chapter 2 and verse 12 it says work out work out your salvation but i want to put emphasis on that phrase work out exercise be tenacious be consistent the admonition here is be consistent now with this don't just do it here and there whenever you feel like it be disciplined build yourself up mandates consistency and you can say okay lord empower my will to be consistent and he'll help you i promise you he'll help you to work out so that you'll develop those spiritual muscles as you contend with life and face all the things we're facing now and i think a whole lot more yet to come if you're weak he's ready to make you strong if you're strong he's ready to make you stronger if you're distant your choice is to come close and if you're close come even closer the third challenge he gives it says pray in or with the holy spirit remember the teachings the bible the word of god build yourself up be consistent press in to your spiritual life maturation and development pray in with the holy spirit see the preposition there can be translated either way in or with and this is how i apply this in my life i'm going to try to make it practical pray in the holy spirit means to me first corinthians chapter 14 and verse 4 using my spiritual prayer language now i had the opportunity to study spanish and german and greek and self-study hebrew and you know when you're studying languages you've got to memorize a lot of vocabulary decline nouns parse verbs it's very challenging it's wonderful that god gives us a language without any study the language of the holy spirit glass allelia in first corinthians 14 4 it says edify yourself building yourself up when you pray in tongues or you pray with your spiritual language so i'll do that also it says here pray with the holy spirit you can translate it that way and that what that does is it stirs up within me ii corinthians and chapter 13 and verse 14 that says be in communion with the holy spirit so living your life with god the holy spirit that jesus promised in john 14 john 16 that he would send to help us you say good morning holy spirit i need you to help me i want to be in communion i want to be connected to you now you might say it but he's invisible of course just like the air you breathe it's invisible but your life depends on it he's invisible but he's right there and so if we're told pray i'm going to pray i'm going to be in communion with almighty god by using my spiritual prayer language first corinthians 14 4 and i'm also going to be in communion with the holy spirit each day knowing he's with me to help me to empower me to purify me to direct me to guide me god the holy spirit jesus actually said it's good that i leave because i'm going to send the helper the parakletos to you to be with you navigating through times like this we need to pray in and with the holy spirit and then another challenge he gives keep yourself in god's love interesting isn't it keep yourself in god's love in other words here's the way we could hear it stay in love with god stay in love with god you know what that tells me it tells me that the holy life or the relationship we have with him is more than the avoidance of sin is the affection of being with him the affection the love the intimacy the emotions the feelings of being with him stay deeply in love with him and there's something about that that yes should engender your emotions and your affections and your desires and your passions yes the bible is replete with example of example about the importance of that listen i think of my own relationship with diane it's not just sterile or academic it's not just knowing pieces of information or avoiding certain things to maintain my covenant with her i want there to be affection and love and closeness and a hug and an embrace and that's what is being exhorted here during a time like this keep yourself in love with god pursue him meet with him spend time with him and you will fall in love with him with all your heart all your soul all your being and even all your emotions and then lastly he'll say have compassion compassion is so important yesterday when i was getting my hair cut i had the opportunity to dialogue with a woman who was sitting right next to me was getting her hair done and she heard that i was a pastor and she said oh where do you pastor i said smith town gospel tabernacle she goes oh my goodness i go to every one of the gloria christmas and easter presentations that you do i said well i'm so glad she goes oh i missed it this last one because of covet 19 and it was cancelled but oh my goodness but she said you know pastor what stood out to me every time i went is someone came up to me and was very compassionate to me and it brought such tears to me that they actually came up to me and asked me how i was doing and loved on my life and reached to me i don't remember even all the music or even what you may have said in a little you know devotion when you spoke and got up at the presentations but i do remember those individuals she actually remembered their names ken and karen so anyone who's in our body who's named ken or karen hey it was you probably right she said it touched me so much it brought me to tears have compassion at this time that's our reach reach with your life to help and to bring healing in matthew chapter 14 verse 14 when speaks of jesus it says that he had compassion upon the people upon the multitudes and what follows right after that says and he healed them he healed them so say lord you challenge me to remember to build myself up to pray in and with the spirit to keep myself in love with god but also to have compassion to have a heartbeat that is not self-focused and self-centered but reaches and helps and brings healing to others now the final beautiful picture that's given us in this epistle and i believe his word to us his big promise he ends the entire epistle under the inspiration of the holy spirit when jude says listen now to him who is able to keep you from falling boy isn't that a promise we hear the warnings we hear the challenges places that we need to engage our will but we can rest our feet confidently on the promise that if you stay close to him if you abide with him he will hold you up and keep you from falling keep you from drifting keep you from turning your back on god and keep you on fire pressing in and moving forward you know the picture that i see here when it speaks about god holding us it happened just this past week i was with one of my little granddaughters i try to take each one of the grandkids out on a little special date and this one i took to a park and she was there and i was kind of holding her lightly because she said grandpa i want to climb the monkey bars you know when they want to go independent and climb on their own but they're really high up and you know it could be a little dangerous so i kind of wrapped myself around her but i held her gingerly because i wanted her to feel she was doing it on her own and there she was and went next one and all son i saw just fear hit her face she said grandpa i think i'm gonna fall i said oh no no you're not gonna fall i'm holding you i'm holding you and you know that was it was just a moment for me i thought that's what you're like with me father you're close i don't always feel you but at that moment when i think oh oh god i think i'm gonna fall you're right there say oh no no you won't i'm holding you i am more than able to keep you from falling the contingency stay close make sure his arms you're near his arms you're near his hands to abide to connect to commune with him and when you take your life and you wrap it around him you abide with him you're connected to him god is big so what happens you expand you multiply now you take it right back to the beginning of his epistle let mercy and love and peace be multiplied to you as you abide and connect with him and you wrap yourself around him guess what happens when you wrap your strengths around him they become bigger they expand they multiply and you get even stronger when you wrap your weaknesses around him he causes them to become strong because they expand and he takes that weakness and makes it into strength and if you have some areas pockets of weakness vulnerability to a temptation and all of us do areas where you feel the potential of compromise well bring that to him i do that i said lord i feel like i'm vulnerable here i feel i could almost succumb to this temptation if it knocks at the door i wonder if i'm going to open it i mean i know where i'm really strong but i feel weak in this area if you've got that then bring it to him as well because when you wrap your compromise or any potential rebellion around him it expands but in this case it doesn't multiply he snaps it he breaks it now i've taken those areas to the lord said lord i bring this to you and i just wrap it around you and i love as it gets around our big majestic holy powerful loving god it just snaps the chain snaps so i encourage you bring it all to him and what needs to be multiplied will multiply what needs to expand will expand and what needs to snap and be cut and broken will snap and be cut and broken because you're wrapping it around him amen okay i'm gonna invite everyone to stand and we're going to just sing this closing song about our lord our mighty god so those in the leadership that are here in the sanctuary those at home and in your home groups i encourage you now take opportunity to engage in a dialogue with one another about what i've just shared when i believe the holy spirit is speaking to all of us take this as an opportunity to pray together to share your heart maybe to ask some questions together capitalize on fellowshipping together hebrews chapter 10. and i also encourage you listen you know the love of god is expressed in a heart of generosity don't stop being generous at this time and i don't mean just with your finances but we do need them here at the church to empower us to do ministry but be generous with your heart to keep reaching out to others at a time like this when someone gets so cloistered so isolated and we respect you got to wear the mask you got to do the social distancing we're doing it here among our leaders but wherever you're at still look for opportunities to reach out to someone with compassion and let the lord anoint you as you do that let's let's just sing this together again wherever you're at wherever you're listening it could be across the united states across the world we know we have so many that listen i just encourage you let this be a moment now with you and god place your eyes upon him say i want to abide with the lord i want to wrap myself around him i want to be connected to him i want to listen to his voice and may peace and mercy and love expand and multiply in your life in jesus name is [Music] glory and freedom [Music] and we will keep [Music] will you my fortress is your name [Music] your
