hey everybody Steve Burns here from chromeolution.com so I'm on the light wave to blender support group and there's a lot of discussion on this plug-in um called uh confirm object and um and one of the users had asked um you know how was this done and of course Steve White responds to that well no it's basically a mesh a mesh to form um you know plug-in um that's conforming it to the ball so the user had also asked no is there anybody out there willing to do a tutorial on it so I figure I'll go ahead and jump on it and give it a try and uh see uh how well it works and I think I've got it so I'm going to share that with you um inside of blender now so let's go inside a blender and you can see I've got three objects here I've got my sphere that I want to conform everything to I have my arrow and then I also have my subdivided plane so the key here is you want to kind of keep everything fairly well subdivided um I look at my sphere even though you can see how many how much geometry I had initially applied to it that I also apply the modifiers subdivision surfaces with a levels of view of three so further subdivided a sphere all right so here we go so the concept is I want to take this arrow and I want to basically get it to warp along the surface or the nature the object that I'm going to attach it to all right so the first thing I'm going to do is I'm going to think about not the arrow warping but instead using this the plane to warp and using the plane as a proxy for warping the arrow so to speak all right so let's go ahead and take the plane I'm gonna go to my side view here let's bring it on up um I'm gonna go and just move this song up I want this about dead center of my arrow okay let's kind of rotate it around and that looks pretty good now the first thing I want to do is I'm going to parent it to the plane because if I move the plane around um because um the plane's gonna be going to be my proxy I want the arrow to always be parented to it so um select the arrow first shift select your plane second control p and just simply select object okay so now if I Target the plane where the plane goes the arrow is going to go with it all right now we're going to add in that little plug-in that Steve White had suggested so I'm going to come over to my modifier go to the deform section and I'm going to come down here to surface deform all right and I'm going to click it and you know if you notice I just made a mistake because I wasn't paying attention and didn't realize that I had the wrong object selected so I'm going to delete this I want the arrow object selected in this case so I want the arrow the thing to be to be affected by the deforming of the what the plane right so we're going to Target that Arrow drop it down go down here to surface to form and now we need to tell the plug-in what object that we want this to be deformed uh with so hit the eyedropper and we're going to Target the plane okay now in order for this to work we have to bind them both together and that's what this little bind button is is for so click it and it's bound all right so how do we know it's bound all right well I'll tell you what let's go grab the plane let's go bring it on down everything's parented together and I'm going to add one more modifier now to the plane and that modifier is you probably would have guessed was going to be um it's going to be a a shrink wrap all right so just to be safe I'm going to hit command a set make sure the rotation and scale is all set I believe I already done it but I get insecure sometimes I want to do it again um I'm going to grab the plane add to object and we're going to add the shrink wrap deform modifier okay now we need to tell it what to deform too we're going to we're going to hit the eyedropper and the form it to our sphere and there it is a nice perfect nice perfect wrap all around here so the beauty of it is just like the uh the conform to surface conform tool that that we're looking at we can move it around and it's going to go around the ball uh we can go to the rotate command and we can uh wrap it around just like this and and if of course if you want to play around with your arrow even more they kind of you know twist it and and and bow it you can always add a a um a cage mesh so in other words shifting and we come right over here to the lattice and a little cage lattice mesh and you can you can uh um you know distort it even further that way just as an FYI but essentially that's uh I think that's pretty much what uh you pretty much uh need to know about you can you can take it and um a little move it neither Direction along the ball that's it's going to stick to that surface just by moving the plane okay all right so obviously you can be getting close to the arrow you see a little bit of distortion here that's because it's not enough geometry I didn't subdivide it enough um so just be aware of that um all right so I'm hoping I'm hoping that this is helpful uh to anybody who wants to play around with that uh the conforming surface conforming techniques without necessarily having to go buy um the plug-in conform object okay and again you can see I see how the air was bending here you can like I said you can add uh you know a mesh cage around there to to deform your object once again you can just go ahead and add your your mod another object uh let me get out of here and go to there we go our lattice object and then you can use that to further monkey around with your arrow if you so choose all right that was it I thought I would share that with everybody so hopefully this was helpful and uh if more to come Steve Burns from chromeolution.com signing off
