[Music] [Music] happy friday and welcome to today's linkedin live i'm rick van over and i'm joined by melissa how are you i'm good rick happy friday to everybody wherever you may be some of you are probably closer to friday evening than others it is it is a great friday hopefully everyone has had a productive week but uh you are right some people are joining us friday night so we want to know where you're from so go ahead and use the linkedin chat and let us know the country or the us state that you're coming from and we've already got a few lit up we've got mexico india uh we i see france and brazil and places in between i think that would be germany we've got romania we got turkey in the house all right cool definitely let us know uh where you're from uh in the map location so we always like doing this with you so uh we've had a busy week melissa but um we're gonna talk about a topic that's a little bit different today a little bit different but very top of mind valid yes different but valid couple different ways to consume it maybe uh i love your shirt by the way orchestration and backup and management that's uh the veeam iconification shirt uh can't buy that anywhere first of all it's pink i made it myself and it is not uh with the green banning branding is hot pink i apologize to everybody but that's how i roll hey rogue but cooperative is how i like to explain myself and i think it might apply in this case all right so let's jump over to the presentation we actually do have something that we're going to talk about here today and we've prepared some content and we're going to do a little bit more on the demo series now a couple of times we've had the demos before we're going to do that today but what's the topic today melissa immutable backups which is uh really interesting something that i don't know i know i'm always getting asked questions about different things regarding immutability so we thought it'd be a great opportunity to take a little bit of a deeper dive and really set the stage here and go into some of the veeam features and functionality that relate to it so we gotta first of all address relatively you know big question what is immutability and i'm gonna tell you a story melissa someone one time i was talking to a customer they said they were an english major in college and they actually challenged if this is even a word so here we go how would you describe immutable in in storage terms not capable or susceptible to change i stole that from the online dictionary yeah i know i remember we looked it up together yeah but it is a word indeed um and it it's a characteristic that goes with storage systems i think a lot of people kind of take immutability as something that you can't change or edit or delete or do anything to right that's a lot of what i think the gist is when people say immutability something you can't impact or change yeah and the one thing i'll highlight about immutability is there's somewhat of a relativity to it meaning i could write immutable data on a storage array and that's all good until i throw that off the boat into the ocean or something like that or set it on fire right so there's some sort of relativity to that but you know we think about other systems like cloud or tape or things that get movable you actually get a little bit more of a kind of an appealing and versatile way and a little bit more abstraction in the immutability right so think about it high level when it comes to immutability and what we're going to show here in a second is a couple of different ways you can use it here with veeam but a lot of these are like i say relative so um you know in the veeam world i had a little fun here um you know melissa if you talk you and i both talk to customers partners prospects analysts all the time how do you explain the immutability options with veeam i kind of explain it how i explain most of veeam things kind of pick your own adventure no matter what your requirements are no matter how you're consuming backup repositories no matter what you want to do tinder veeam has an immune ability solution that will fit your needs and your requirements and really um we do right it depends on you know some customers i have really want to dip their toe in the cloud and storage is a great way to do that well we can leverage immutability there other people are like no cloud for me let's keep everything on prem well with version 11. guess what we can help with that too yeah and i think it's also important to note that some of the established technologies like tape you know can be an immutability option in fact pardon my icon i'm having a little bit of fun with it here but the reality is that you know tape can actually have three very very strong characteristics all at once especially if you think about worm media removed from a library of a tape drive so you actually have something that's offline air gapped and immutable all at once so it's actually a very resilient specimen right but i think kind of the x factor that a lot of organizations may not really i don't want to say miss but maybe miss out on is some of the benefits as a service and and what i mean by that is i'm giving a big heartfelt shout out to all of the veeam service providers around the world and i think that they provide some really interesting value-add everything from cloud connect with insider protection to just some of their other mechanisms some are even offering tape as a service but uh you know the menu here has four pages melissa um at this restaurant and it's a very nice menu it's a very good menu right and these are just categories right there's very specific ways you can do it but i feel like i didn't miss anything in this realm here but you know if we had to break it down a little more i kind of say that there's a fancy word for immutability that somewhat i equate to the uh i call it ultra resilient i made up a word i like that word you made up it's a good one i think i was around i think we were talking and you kind of like oh this is a good one maybe i should use that yeah i was gonna go with ultra durable but that that has a different kind of direction but i think of like media and writing to it x amount of times when you say that yeah exactly something like that but the thought here is that you know a lot of times we come into this for ransomware but the reality is there's there's a lot of other scenarios that draw the immutable or otherwise ultra resilient media copies and draw the need for it so i can think of insider threats you know accidental deletion new person on the job you know things like that do happen now the menu has a little bit more info down here so let's take a look at the the more specific menu here now these it kind of interesting thing melissa all of these options have no additional veeam cost that is correct they are in the product have at it come for ransomware but stay for a protector protection against insider threats and that new person that might do something with a bad powershell script i like that and that's a good point uh um i should say yes there's no additional veeam cost but we're not going to pay your cloud bill you know those types of cloud is not a charity that's something we like to say true true all right so before we rift down this list here i just got a word from the producers that the map is ready so let's go take a look at the application we've had a lot of good feedback here around the world welcome everyone thank you for letting us know where you're from so we've got let's see oh we got great representation france belarus germany swiss netherlands czech and um great representation there and then we've got algeria nairobi madagascar south africa madagascar that might be a first on the live welcome welcome everyone and if you haven't already dropped in the chat where you're from let us know and then we've got indonesia we've got india malaysia sri lanka uh welcome oman um great great geography represented here jordan canada that's easy didn't even have to look at the list there i represent that uh california ohio that's me welcome everyone so definitely let us know where nepal cool welcome everyone thank you uh rupenda all right so let's go back you know to the second page of the menu as it were melissa um why don't you pick one let's talk about one of these and roughly let's see i'm gonna go spin my wheel of vemma mutability and i would like to start with the hardened linux repository please okay repository for 300 no um the hardened linux repository that's a new capability that came with v11 i'm going to demo that one here in a second this one i i would i would really emphasize the low barrier of entry here for a lot of people you can come up with any linux system in fact i'll share you um my my home i have a small business of sorts you know we have a household employee i've got payroll data that i care about it's a business granted it's my home and it's it's protected by veeam and i got copies upon copies for days and days but what i decided to do is post v11 instead of redoing all of my backups for the new hardened repository i actually just started leveraging the backup copy job so it was a really easy way low barrier of entry didn't have to reconfigure everything and i can add a copy with that immutability so this is a very easy technique to add and we're going to show you that here in a second i do want to add a word of caution when it comes to immutability and we were talking about this rick um so immutable means it's immutable you can't edit you can't change it but most importantly you can't delete it so if i got my brand new hard linux repository and i set my retention policy for 90 days because that's a little crazy sometimes right uh i can't delete that data for 90 days right i need to wait for that to age off so i need to make sure that i have a good understanding of my environment my repositories and how much storage i'm going to consume in there before i go and turn on that immutable flag otherwise there's a lot of potential for issues and the good news is if you're a veeam customer veeam one can help you do that really quickly and easily and kind of keep an eye on things for you so you don't end up in the out of space situation yeah that's a really good point and i'd i'd argue that you know it can also potentially get you into unforeseen costs like i'll keep everything forever immutable oh that's not a good idea you really need to yeah right so yeah give some thought to it and you know i'd go so far as to say that the the policies you set you know talk to your stakeholders and you know talk to others to kind of see the right way that you can do it i got to give two really really big shout outs erica telly welcome thank you for joining from seattle area and the notorious kgg is in the house so jeff welcome welcome from toronto sorry insider tip there so uh good stuff all right so let's go down the wheel uh from these ultra resilient specimens melissa uh why don't you pick the next one that we'll talk about okay how about we go with the tape right tape with the tape that's an important one and that's the one that i think i mean i tend to not think about tape that much i'm going to confess i don't do a lot with tape i never did in my career but the fact is it is an option out there it's often very cost effective and often overlooked as well yeah you know tape is a is an undeniable innovation in technology you know the resiliency i've seen tape engineers pull tape out cut it with scissors put put like desk tape on it back together and it would still read you know there's incredible parity built into it so it's really good stuff but again it has a portability aspect it has a offline aspect has a low cost of ownership low acquisition cost a lot of good characteristics again it's one option not very modern you know but it can be done so that's an immutability option now so i think our service providers sit right in the middle here again this is uh this is that kind of don't miss it but don't miss out either type of thing i think that's a good one to keep in mind there's so many ways that the service providers can help the market out here that's a good one anything else stick out to you melissa i think i'm going to have to go with the classic thing that probably comes to mind when we say mutable backups which is the backups in s3 and s3 compatible storage you hesitate when you select anything cloudy i do yeah oh man oh i love the i love the i'm pulling her up guys i really am she she had to she i'm trying we'll see but yeah that's another good way the public aws s3 as well as s3 compatible systems and that includes on-premises systems and there will be a day that will have other hyperscale public cloud options there we just aren't in a position to finalize the scope and details there yet but that's the other one i'm going to show you so i think what we ought to do now so let's just uh let's just do it let's do some demos all right let's take a look so what i'm going to show everyone here is that hardened repository and the public cloud so the capacity tier now what i'm actually going to show you is kind of cheeky and tell me correct me if i'm wrong here melissa is this am i crazy i'm going to do double play i'm gonna talk about this double play double play it's baseball season come on the thought is i'm gonna have this one backup policy that i take and it'll be stored in two different locations that's my three two one rule being done but i'm going to have immutability in multiple places so i think fancy yeah yeah it's pretty good stuff so let's uh let's jump into it so i think i'm doing this right maybe i am i am all right so melissa i want to highlight the very first thing i want to look at with showing this immutability is actually veeam 1. i'm going to start here before i show you how the backups are made and i want to introduce a pretty significant component to this immutability story and that's the sober or the scale out backup repository now melissa how do you explain the scale out backup repository as a storage technology because you know you have a great storage battery uh it's a great way to mish-mash any different type of storage you have in your environment from ultra high performance or really fast restores to archive type storage in one logical unit and let your policies kind of handle your tiering it's a set it and forget it type of thing indeed and i'd also go so far as to say it's a software-defined hardware agnostic and cloud-ready secondary management system for your storage so that being said one of the cool things we have and this is for the public cloud capacity tier i can see right away i've got 14 days of mutability in the cloud i'm i've also put in a nice safeguard of not putting in more than 10 terabytes and the most important part i'm going to go deep on the color wheel here is this copy mode copy mode is a great great option to immediately have those copies on disk sent to the cloud as well now anybody who's watching what i'm doing here says why do you only have four mags used i am doing this with empty vms it shows the policy and it makes it move really fast but there is no uh no worry about the scalability here we have sent petabytes to the public cloud so i think it's also important to always start right in beam one right so it's a good place so then when we talk about the immutability when it comes to the different storage resources the scale outback of repository is the the mechanism to do that and so you can see i've got a couple of different things going on so the azure one above is using performance capacity and archive storage so the azure cool archive and then good naming convention there rick i'm trying i'm trying and then the other thing on the bottom the single instance this is an important thing too if you're not using a lot of these like cloud technologies yet or if you only have one backup storage resource sober single instance is actually a great way to start so let me explain that to kind of make this make sense so in here i have one nas device it's smb file share okay that's where my backups go a little piece of trivia is that the veeam scale up backup repository was actually concepted to help organizations deal with the problem of my backup storage got full and then in that situation you can easily add another what's called performance tier so i can add other disk resources across my infrastructure here to your point melissa mix and match or i like to say frankenstein things together you need to but that being said let's go back to this immutability play now the interesting thing about the immutability i want to highlight this real quickly here is that the hardened linux repository and the capacity tier with immutability they kind of have their own attributes so the software defined aspect of the scale outback repository is really around the motion of the data so let me show you what i mean so i'm going to look at the properties here and you can see that i've got this performance here i'm going to skip over the placement policy but also the capacity tier these two elements here really kind of prescribe a lot on how the data is going to move through the environment so for the immutability again the individual we call them extents the individual storages so the hardened repo and then the capacity tier kind of have their own settings which i'll go to next but if i look at the performance tier you can see that the first stop of my backups is a hardened linux repository so it's on premises it's very accessible for me then the next stop is to the capacity tier and so see if i can navigate this little small but mighty part of the user interface here so extending the backups to the capacity tier is set right here so that immutable bucket is the target for these jobs and then this is that copy and move mode set up here so copy is the really good way to immediately adhere to the 3-2-1 rule and then the move mode i'm going to run onto a new color here yellow the move mode after 45 days will basically evacuate that hardened linux repository to then go long and deep and forever on into the like an object storage resource or a public cloud cool archive resource right some of those offline storages like azure archive or aws glacier deep archive and the like pro tip anytime you put data in the cloud make sure you encrypt it or someone else will there we go might not be saying that from experience or anything of course not of course not so let's take a look at where those settings are actually set so here's that hardened linux repository immutable here and you know melissa i know that you have been playing with you know some of the different technologies here at veeam that came with b11 what can you say about how complicated and i'm giving you a trick question but what can you say about how complicated this is to make an immutable option accessible i think it's about three steps you have to perform and they're all really well documented and i know people have demoed them super easy right yeah everything in v11 is super easy just like cdp it's like three steps to set up cdp i think it's maybe three to five to set up hard linux repository none of this stuff is crazy unobtainable hard to get started with stuff fair shout and it's right here just have this backup set immutable for seven days so this what this means to putting all this together is when i take those backups on prem the first seven days are going to be set as immutable and then after 45 days they're going to be moved to the cloud so if i'm putting my two configurations together that kind of quote unquote closes the loop now you remember i said double play yes it is baseball season right so if i look at the properties of that bucket i will show you the next element here which is what type of immutable am i doing in the cloud so that 14-day immutability which is the first thing i showed in veeam one that's set right here so my double play is seven days on prem those same seven days will be in the public cloud plus seven more right so this right here is the double play immutability and there's a lot of intelligence in this right there's a shared metadata to very efficiently get backup data up and bring it back if you need the only caution i'll give you on making backups immutable in the public cloud is because there's a lot of shared objects that are referenced and if you're familiar with the way we do like fast cloning on refs and xfs volumes it kind of is rather similar but anyways if we mark something immutable there might be some shared pieces that have to stick around a little bit longer but make no mistake friends the extra storage cost is worth the the resiliency of this backup data for sure all right uh cool so let's go over to the map while i switch back to some of our closing tips how do i do on that demo keeping it nice and simple i think that was pretty good right pretty good i'm trying i mean it is that simple to use it is and you know we've got a number of demos over at the veeamon website here but uh taking a look here we've got a number of new places that have come in we've got madrid chile south africa uk i wonder who that is hey josh from ottawa actually i got a great story about cheese in ottawa josh maybe for another time louisiana minnesota a couple more states here tennessee just was there for vacation last month poland late arrival rafal thank you for that um jorge welcome man anyways you know thank you all for letting us know where you're from so anyways uh this has been hopefully a pretty informative bit here on oh new hampshire hopefully i know a guy in new hampshire um but hopefully this has been pretty informative here today um any other thoughts on immutable data uh it really is an easy way to protect your data especially with veeam write software defined very low uplift to get started with a hard linux repository if you have linux experience if you have no linux in your environment maybe a little harder but then there's so many other ways to take advantage of it um you know the classic s3 immutability whether it be in the cloud or an on-prem device it's really something that everybody should be looking at absolutely so we got one more slide here we also dropped it into the link here we've got a couple of resources here to help you and it does kind of go over to ransomware resiliency and preparedness but the reality is some form of ultra resilient media or immutable data should be part of the solution and i just showed you an easy way that you can have it twice so we've got some white paper some webinars but more importantly twice as nice twice as nice there we go but anyways plenty of resources over at veeam.com and the other thing i want to highlight is on the monday the dave and jason show we're going to preview microsoft ignite in fact i better get ready to practice my session here we're going to do the wonderful tech jeopardy game again that is so fun um uh melissa i got to steal that maybe we'll put a linkedin live jeopardy show together that would be fun we should do it it is anyways uh so melissa thank you for presenting here with me today thank you for having me rick it's always a pleasure and a big thank you to all the attendees here really hope that this session was informative for you and also big thanks to our marketing team who are the producers and promoters of this content mark katie matt and alina and others just around the world really grateful for their help thank you and that concludes today's [Music] stream [Music] you
