so maybe you've seen a lot of videos explaining how to breed fish or profit but how do you take fish breeding from being a side hustle to your full-time job stay tuned is a interview Greg sage of select aquatics about his journey to becoming the premier source of rare live bears in the United States hi this is a gamers wife here with practical fish care tips to help busy aquarist spend more time enjoying their aquariums and today I have with me here Greg sage owner of select aquatics a fish breeding business located just north of Denver Colorado that is literally run out of his basement so Greg thank you so much for being here with me why don't you start off by talking about how did you get into the fish hobby I was a strange introverted kid in seventh eighth grade and so I had a couple of core items in my bedroom man and I bred Guppies sold in the fish stores and I had this own little life going on aside from having to deal with the kids at school so my parents just thought I was odd and left me alone and it was a great thing so I bought three creams when I was in seventh grade for 15 bucks a five or ten and a 15 and that's kind of where it started did you ever take a break from fish keeping or you husband times I because I do I'm also I was also a touring musician and I made a living for most of my life as a performer I'm a trumpet player and so I moved that I sat down figured out one time I moved almost 40 times between high school and um oh roughly 10 years later because I was living apartments living all over the country that sort of thing so there was periods there where I didn't set up a tank where I was more in places where I was only some work for six months or something okay but as a rule whenever I've been anywhere for more than about two years I've had something going and about the mid nineties was where I really set up a fish room more than 10 tanks okay so before so you said basically your primary career has been as a trumpet player then we write as job player and also as a teacher and that was a bad director for about 15 years yeah I go for 12 and I also taught students for about 30 years okay and I toured for six years with a merengue band up and down the East Coast was a blast and I also toured for six years with Dutch Falcone and his twisted Orchestra oh my goodness I did a number of things shows for PBS at what point you know you had this career in music teaching and traveling all over when did you decide to do the fish business full time I was at a couple of schools where I was teaching I was a band director like said for about 15 years and I just was at schools where they were cutting back on their arts and so I decided if I was going to really make a difference I would have to be a principal myself and then support the Arts and and higher teachers so so I did became a principal got another got second masters and I would always make to make it to the end the interview and it's like oh my goodness you toured with oh you did all these things but then you you're more than we need all we're looking for is a 45-minute break for the kids we don't want a band program we don't want somebody who knows that you know so so I didn't you know I didn't get hired as a band director or as a principal and in the principal world I did really well with that but they said you know we don't consider arts to be at least in Colorado and to be an academic thing so so they hired coaches that were the history and English people I know and so anyway so I left education so I I missed the kids and for any of the kids out there they happen to see this you know yes mr. sage is still around but you know it's it's it's become a different place than it used to be so okay so that's kind of where the heart for teaching comes from okay that's that's pretty cool okay so you move into the fish business let's talk about the early days of starting your business sure what are some of the main challenges that you face that our audience should be aware of before they try to breed fish for a living yeah tell us how about that jury my philosophy might my take on this has always been to have my audience and my demand meet my investment so for instance a G how many fish can I create can I do out of my basement well okay this made tanks I can crack this much I can do this much okay that means I can bring this much money so I can afford and take a loan out for this buy the money and then it's a got a huge loan and they put it down there and then they're like you know where do I find my audience where do I find all those people that I know we're out there so what I've done is I've always had tanks and so at one point when it came to the point where doing this I just finished work that got out of Education I was a metals broker of all things for about six months that was a hoot so I did that for about six months and then my wife was saying well you know you take you got all these shows and I always was taking fish and selling them at the conventions and pay my own way it's like you know how could you wrap that up and at that time I had about 60 tanks so I wasn't going to put any money into it until I saw what I could get out so I picked a couple of species and just started get putting them up on the Aqua bed you know and I'm selling a lot of them up a bit and then every comic comes keep my ears or eyes open for other species that I didn't see anywhere else I thought people would want and then possibly finding hard good products that went with the species that I that I was carrying okay and then I happen to have the the became the Green Dragons fall into my lap yeah and I've been doing them now for about eight years so let me let me kind of let me try to summarize what I heard you say then so starting on if you're starting off in this business some key things to remember are start off small start off with what you have and try to make a profit off of this the smaller equipment investment listen to what people want to buy yes and what people are looking for I mean I have a few fish down there that I shouldn't have down there cuz I never sell any but I just have great faith in them okay and that's not a wise thing for someone who's just starting out to do this yeah I can do that only because I can afford to have a little bit of extra tank space for special things I also heard that you pick fish that people want but that's kind of slightly different like it's not widely available necessarily well the term I use is when you like Lay's to go to conventions and in the low-hanging fruit you know people go to a convention you want to buy the Montezuma want to buy the really bright dory not not the crappy door joy they want for really you know red white and blue type of great door and so I always get the best populations I can and I and right now I'm actually having to cut back a little bit because I'm getting older and I just have too many things there are some things that's like I have a huge demand for so I've expended their tanks but I've kept everything else so now I've got like 30 species down there and I've got maybe 15 tanks of some things like you wanna zoom as I love almost 15 tanks about twenty two tanks Oakley goes so people want records else if you want right so I have to start cutting a few things and not being real vocal about what they're gonna be but but if you haven't bought one then you know and see it God okay okay invest in the fish that people want any grows it grows they'll come to you you know you get better at something the other thing and the biggest thing and it's and and eighty percent of what I do is I respond to every customer I deal with everything right on I don't let anything go by itself I take total control over every interaction between myself from the customer nobody ever sits at a point going gee where's my box yeah oh gee let's you know I'm always touching base boys you know and I just try to respond within 24 hours so that as a customer you always know you've got recourse I don't bother anybody I don't ever since BAM out I don't you know but it's a case of where when you order something from me you pretty much I think are clear as to how the process is gonna go and and that we can work it through because many write to me and say you don't have the shopping cart at your site how do i order from you that's that you just did you know everything dandy is what you're looking for give me a zip code and I'll send you a quote so excellent customer service especially it sounds like it's really important for online sales when you can't see the customer either you know and that's where normally it's really bad yeah and I started this out of a run-in with it was a big online retailer people have asked me to because I have told this story before but they've asked me Hawaii who it is and I won't say who it is but because I don't want get them have them come after me but no much bigger than I am yeah but I bought a bunch of food I buy like $100 with the food and I arrived to me and it was it was that the the the it's it's it's that soft type food like for cruel no no like the Creole type patty okay yeah and they were ting ting ting you know artist Roxy Leesburg poorly and I had almost offered a bunch with his stuff it was all rock so I was like no problem I understand that happens you store it in a wrong place it's not kept cool whatever so after a month of phone calling emails and they're promising the whole time they would take care of this they finally just let me go and nothing ever got resolved so I said you know at that time I can do better than that so you know if I ever if ever you do feel lost your email does fall through the cracks because I do answer now probably 30 to 40 emails a day if I haven't even heard from you in 48 hours right again and I'll write you back with huge apologies okay okay so they're actually big brings up a big point well I actually had two questions that came out of that one was you said you currently you are still the the face of the company you know everything goes through you do you have any help do you have any partners employees and what do you do if you want to go on vacation no I've been I'm now entering in October and just my tenth year I probably had I think now about six people that have come through here that are people that I use for vacations that sort of thing currently I have somebody in Longmont that is it covers for me when I'm on vacation I have two other people who haven't done anything for me in a long time but they can come in they know the room and I have one gentleman that comes down Saturdays and and he's just he's a great guy he's a hard worker and he's in one of my videos actually cruise cruise so you have to watch this cruise it's in the official original fish room tour video okay okay and so anyway I'm he comes on Saturdays and it just changes box filters and does I have to have done around around command you know without something like that I would love that somebody come by more frequently but I just don't bring anybody actually I don't pay myself and so you know I okay alright if you live in the northern desert all right you know who to email okay the second question that kind of came up you talked about big pet stores fish stores you know there is a lot of competition in terms of the fish farms in Florida in Asia you know that are breeding masses amounts of fish so what is your differentiator you know how did you find those pockets of fish and products that make you special um that's a really good question a lot of thought went into that I have friends who breed cichlids and they sell cichlids online yeah and so when there are a zillion people that breed cichlids and when you breathe cichlids you've there are a number that come in and out of the hobby and they're very popular for a period of time and you know you can build them up have a basement full of this particular species they lose their popularity often you've got a switch with live bears you've got about 100 species that's it you know is there's really no more there's there's some like master breeder status type things they can get to 150 species sometimes but generally that's all there is they'll never be another as the fatherís montezuma they'll never come and go so what I did was I stuck with and killifish alike cichlids rain rainbows can be somewhat like the sequence where you have trends and some ago but live bears you always can be stock and stick with a certain species and I'm never going to get old and ever going to get tired you know they are what they are so so that's why I chose a stick with live bears I stayed away from Guppies I did have Guppies my first couple of years but only because there's a zillion people out there that are breeding Guppies and they devote their rooms to them and I that wasn't something I was in a position do so that's how I chose libraries and why I chose the species I do so that they can always and most the species have been here for at least 10 years some have been here free but much longer and so that way I have a line that's well established yeah together so that's how I chose what species and which ones to work with Wow so strategic I didn't even think about that some groups of fishes they're very cyclical or they just shift with the winds you know and then you've been lying breaking this thing for a few generations and now nobody wants them like what do you do I have situations where there are some fish out there that I've always wondered why in the world but no one ever selectively breed this fish for this particular trait yeah I'm doing right now with this appearance right because you don't just breed you know I know the internet title says you're the king of rare live bears but you don't just bring it life right and the adesso Barb's as well and neither one of so I the Edessa Barb's are not a line that's available in pet stores so I don't know where they has that and with the loose of penis I went ahead and figured out how to breed them and posted it in on the web on the Internet very good video videos by the way so definitely check them out it's six years of work to figure out how to breed these guys and so I because of their long generation time of over two years I knew that selectively breeding them wasn't an option and that's probably one of the reasons why they hadn't been done before but I wondered whether you could breed them up in such huge numbers that eventually you'll get the morphs that you're looking for numbers so I did find that they'll throw occasional highway to individuals with really great contests contrast between the black dots in the white background so so what I've been doing now is bringing them up by the thousands I've chosen I've now got about maybe a hundred that are really high weight really nice cool and my first ones are just coming into being in the rotation for breeding and the first two males that I used for this were in the video that I just did on breeding the Synod on Stan's apprentice so select quad no it's not select for experience it's just as breeding loose' Bennis okay and so now the those young are now about two months past when that video was made and I was just looking at them today and they literally go into their adult coloration within a week it's like they're they're really dark and they kind of modeled color then all of a sudden you look in there and they're and so that just happened the last couple days so I posted this morning I was so there's gonna be a lot of real nice highway wins in that group okay okay so the keys I'm hearing well at least the kind of fish that were important to you is something that's stable kind of demand not silly as trendy and also species that some of them are kind of difficult to breed and nobody's really figured out how to do them hence you have an entry into the market that way as well and I end up with fished in nobody else has so you were asking about what is it that distinguishes me and so I'll end up with this highway this has been s I'm working on a new type of green dragon I can tell you what it is because it's not only many people I've said it before what it is because I know that I've been working at for eight years and if anybody else hears us some things oh great I'm gonna develop this good luck to you but it's gonna be an all refrigerator white green dragon with with the best most exploit you're still coming up with the names yes no chance so so I have my first three breeding groups of them downstairs and I've got some young coming up but the problem is right now they're not very Hardy at all and I don't have a hundred percent success that they're getting through sexual maturation and I'm still losing 90% of them so it's gonna be a couple years and so I'm just now raising up young from the first pairings and we're gonna be fertile so you you like the challenge somebody's species you're picking take many months or years to be breathable basically well it's funny because people say you know the gold Alvarez I I really want them well I used to have about God I had over it doesn't tank so then I was doing really great with them but I couldn't sell them I was going to the conventions no but they were too strange and too new well they're really gorgeous fish and they're one of my favorite fish so then I let him drink them down to where I had maybe 10 pairs left and then he got put on the video with Cory's video trendy and so all of a sudden everybody wants gold over si and they can't figure out with it with a 30 day gestation why I can't produce them in six months so so I am still working on them but it's okay so you briefly mentioned this a little bit but when you were starting your business you started small you had a certain group of fish and then you started adding dry goods and how did you choose what dry gets the cell and then clearly hear that masala is a really heavy duty alive bear thing my bear disease came into the hobby around 1998-99 and so we used to treat it to lab and see you once a year and do all the tanks with it just to just to keep it at bay and it's it's a parasite that lives in the skin of the fish it lives off the liquids at the fish the fishings of just slimming down something down and bammo salt does a great job of curing it now for the fish world at least yeah the YouTube community knows you as the supplier well one guy wrote me not too long ago and he said do you realize that you can get live Hammes all this other place and and in this guy saw it sells it and and he's and he's and he's the same price or cheapen you or whatever so it was at that point then that I said you know most people that buy this they're trying to treat something that's gonna last you know it's going to be a 1 course of treatment and they're probably not gonna need it again within three years that's how long it'll last but maybe they won't but chances are they won't and so they're not gonna use more than 10 grams of it so I started breaking it down starting at 20 grand packages the little pipes for less money and I know that most other people assault I'm gonna bother with that so I sent out four or five of those a day and the tangrams and so again the market niche that nobody else is definitely also doing and so you know people get more for their money and the turnover for me is higher and then people aren't stuck with a huge ya camisole okay yeah so the new Plinko caves that was something I've always wanted to do I found out early on that the prequels wouldn't breathe for me unless I had a certain type of cave right you were saying had they had to be able to see the clothes they couldn't see the back they had to see the back of the cage right they wouldn't go into a dark cave and so that was the first time then the the the color that they went toward they didn't want it to be too dark you know because again they fearful but I wasn't to be too light I heard because if it was bright white like on a PVC or like on just plain ceramic they wouldn't go into it because this is like so they wanted you know so it had to be a certain darkness okay so we experimented with different types shades of clays and different types and so I went into that with the flea coke cave yeah and so now I've got a place does a great job we've got to the point where we make molds now and we're cranking those out then the fertilizer yes covered by mistake grab a girl aquarium plant fertilizer but that was just from walking around aimlessly in a hydroponics store and I was looking at this wall of all the fertilizers and I you know hey can you use a tease in an aquarium so I kind of gave him an idea of what I thought I would want to use for my fish room because I was tired of paying 40 bucks for 60 bucks sometimes for you know five pounds of a fertilizer that would last me six months or a year and so I said just gotta be a better way to do this so I said okay here's the format I'm looking for I wasn't looking for a liquid housing for a drive from that sort of thing so they gave me three or four options and I and I and I came you know then I came to a choice of one of them and I said okay what isn't perfect for an aquarium what do I need to add to this so at first we were adding a little bit of iron to it but eventually it got got to the point now where I don't I don't add anything to it and the quarry was like when Corinne I first were talking about this he's like cancelled that he goes no one's ever gonna buy it twice you know business but no people have body from me more than joy well speaking of Cory from aquarium co-op so he has said online several times in his videos that his retail store does not sell fish online you know he's old right he sells dry goods and plants not kind of thing but no fish because it's just a lot of time to put into customer support you know you ship fish they die you got to replace it there's just a lot of areas where you can lose money so are you willing to share your secret for how to make online fish sales profitable if you haven't seen how I ship first off I've been learning from customers that's the way I put a box together seems to be very different than ain't the way anybody else does it okay I will link that video in the description first yeah this electronics presents the shipping I don't know why it's that different to me it just is common sense the way it should be done but I also found out that from a customer which I also wouldn't that same video the PayPal had changed their policy and it made it impossible for me to continue to ship priority so I only ship overnight okay and then from here UPS is two to three times the cost of USPS the Postal Service okay and in Phoenix was the own ship live fish so I'm pretty much limited you know as to what I can use so I just use Express Mail and then I only ship when it's not at when the temperatures are between 35 and 90 so you know so everything I'm hearing here is you are maximizing the percentage of fish that make it alive basically by the shipping methods the overnight shipping only the only shipping certain temperatures right times of the year oh yeah absolutely and you know if I had more time I would look into finding out how some of the bigger places you know like live fish net or whatever wet spot I think they do a lot right what's by you know how they how they go about doing it but for myself I found that you pretty much have to make your own rules and it's just like so if I get customers writing me now with orders which happens and I check their temperatures when they send me the zip code that's why I need you simcha by the way just to figure out shipping but to look at your temperatures and you know if it says that you're at ninety four ninety five ninety seven hundred hundred five hundred seven then what I do is every weekend I write you down on my chipping board and I write your zip code down and I check every Saturday I try to get it done sometimes I'll do it on Friday I try to make sure I get it done by Saturday sometimes I'm really busy it'll take till Sunday but then I'll look up everybody zip code and everybody's temperature look at my own temperatures and then if I can ship one day that next week then I go ahead and email you we can ship on Wednesday does that work for you that is commitment people he is looking up your zip code to make sure your fish are gonna make it their life I do that every weekend and I have about 20 20 people right now in that list nice okay very cool um let me see this is a question kind of going back to the early days of starting your business but at what point you know you're you're kind of selling breeding fish as a little side hustle thing and then you decide to go full in what how long do you feel like it took to be profitable enough to support your household that's a good question I'm just like I can't support myself a little household yet right because you're still doing the trumpeting well I'm still I mean I don't I right now I'm making about what I made when I was like just starting out as a teacher know if that you know I'd like to think I'm doing as well as anyone else doing this but you know right off the top a good third to a half of shipping so so you know and then and then then you don't have money you have many months of you you don't ship at all it's true and the overhead is really high so all kinds of things that up to make it a little bit more difficult money-wise for myself because I didn't I wasn't working on tryna get out from under a large debt that made life really really nice okay and then it took me about let's see it was about three years before I was able to put together you know put aside enough money to start really helping with infrastructure buying a generator reviewing the whole electrical system that sort of business so as always putting money back into the business but in the last couple years now I've built up enough of a nest nest egg so that if something happens or if you know I can afford it to get day off if I have to you write yours like this where you have a super cold winter and a very hot summer right I don't freak because I can't get orders out right because that's the thing you know no matter what good work you're doing no matter what good breeding you're doing whatever was happening if you're not getting boxes out the door making any money and for me this is this is as much a pleasurable thing if it's what - stops becoming finite I don't you know don't plan on continuing to do it it's it's it's it's not something I would do if I was wise and trying to try and tomato me to payroll or trying to really make real money I mean I can tribute you know a fair amount of the hostage month and pay my bills and I've been operating the black since the start but for the site I started off very very small yeah I like that cautious Corey I talked about this a lot yes as most people go into the fish business wants to restore their 50 grand in debt from the get-go it's like yeah could you imagine yeah okay so the last question I have for the business logistics section of review is marketing and sales how do you market your business and where do you get most of your new customers new sales from I have a lot of things that have shown up in other magazines I with occurrence the Nanta Journal I published you know my my things come out and and and and a la of course journals various things other clubs have published some of my essays and I think that gets my name out to the audience that I'm looking for the next biggest thing is probably the YouTube stuff and that has just been driving my existence since last September in a good way or do you feel overwhelmed I've been overwhelmed to this moment it started but the whole point was is I had a body of work in my head when I started and and and it is coming to fruition it is coming together and it's I've got about another four to five videos in my head right the last few I haven't told anybody this yet but I've been working and buying equipment and stuff that I want to do the music myself I'll write it off and I'll be like eight piece with four screaming horns and yes cool someone like the ones I'm the montezuma the one on the Green Dragons the the big videos I know everybody's waiting for ya I'm gonna put some screamin horns by John Williams soundtrack for all because I'll be playing all the instruments so anyway once those get done then once that's finished and the the website thing of the body of work at the website is on video then what I'll do is the the YouTube videos will be used to say okay these are in good numbers if you want to buy them as a great time to buy them and I'll continue to do the questions okay great so a lot of good information on the logistics of running a fish breeding business we're gonna wrap up our interview with a few fun kind of personal questions so what would you say is your favorite part of the job and then your least favorite or hardest part of the job Wow my so many of the things you'd read until you start doing them and then you get good at it and you think okay this isn't so bad you know like you know it's it's like when I've been off for a couple days because the weather is good next time I start shipping again and then when you starts going and you get into the rhythm man okay hey I can crank out I can do them two more boxes yeah my favorite player job is probably the emails in the morning because everyone's totally different and people dread that part of the customer emails but I've been really lucky I had a number of people when I first started this oh my god don't do this because people are awful people are terrible you're gonna have so many run-ins with people they're gonna be so net I mean I've had a couple people that have tried to take advantage of me and have succeeded so far what about what do you think is the most memorable success you've had in your fish breeding career so far oh I was gonna fish cure the fish breeding career is definitely subpoenas oh my god IIIi wished very hard for even an egg for at least over two years you know be funny got eggs oh my god to get a fry you know that lives and so now I'm able to produce hundreds so what do you think your goals are for the future you've kind of hinted at some of them so what are your goals for the future and what do you think your plans are for the business when you retire I would like to see some of the fish that I've developed establish themselves in the hobby so I think green dragons that's going to happen with there are people who bought a number of them in the earlier generations are finding out how difficult they are to breed how hard they are to get a good green color I hope to establish that so when others do it in the future they're better able to do so maybe establish a high white loose appearance in the hobby maybe get the snow dragons introduced I'm also been working on a blue cichlid for a while but who knows what's gonna happen with that but just get those things settled and have people finally take some of these lines on and keep them going dad's gonna be a big problem cuz like with these fujio's talking about do the last in the world if I get out of it they're God right right and so I really need to start at trying I had that letter I put up the website saying to all story stores hobbyist universities yeah you know please if you're looking at to keep fish keep these fish we're gonna means I've had two people that have taken me up on it both of them are in Canada I couldn't ship to them so there needs to be more people that that sail cat can afford it set up ten tanks and just do one species and make sure that it goes really great all of that so that's your legacy if somebody could preserve some of these more important so all my work doesn't disappear yeah it was really discouraging a few years back when I had lost one of my species here as well just call a few customers and get some back and I couldn't find anybody still haven't gone so so and it wasn't because they were hard to keep I think it's just ago you know right I got some really cool fish I decided to give them to my friend who killed them okay it's a final question for someone who wants to make a go at breeding fish for a living not just for profit but for a living what's your number one piece of advice for them really research both your market and how that relates to the fish you choose to keep a lot of people come to me I want to breed discus I don't want to be angelfish yeah discus makes lots of money there's a reason why you don't see many people bring discus they're really hard to keep they're expensive I had a woman who bred discus so I stayed at her place for a couple days to talk I gave and I asked her all about it picked her brain about it and I said you know for instance I'm thinking of contacting all my customers a month after I said not my ship and it's asking how their fish are doing and she looks at me like why in the god's name would you do that yeah and I'm like well that just makes sense to me and I said would you do that and she says never she was I don't dare call my customers that day after they arrived because you know most people put them into the tanks and they kill him you know yeah they're expensive and so you look around there there's also lots of discus people out there you know we need we need somebody who can breed who can breed double blacks you know really good log fin little blacks super Vail blacks angels you know you don't see anybody doing that so I you know the people who are building breeding marbles and so on in the stores it's like come on you could do so much better yeah so yeah I just gotta look for the market and make sure that you that you've got it go to shows go to conventions go to clubs find out how many people I used to say from the first two years I did 14 shows and conventions and I used to kid that I had met at least half of the people who will ever be my audience in the United States did I travel all over the US to do these things and so that to me in my head was about 2,000 people so I figured I've got about 4,000 people in the US that would buy from select aquatics so I set up my business with that size audience in mind okay and that's pretty much been about what it's worked out too okay so I think that's that's one of the bonus tip here is something I kind of got out of what you're saying is it's all about the fish community to some of these fish that you got it was only because you knew a guy who knew a guy you know and then the people that you meet and the customers that you support you know it's all this that's what happens when you have a hobbyist who's also a businessman you know at your heart or your core your selfish lover and you want to help other people yeah succeed Sal did I make enough money to be happy so I don't need to I don't need to get every penny my goodness I don't need to anyway I always send extras you know I have a formula now because people begin to expect so many extras so you know if you order four fish you get what extra ten Fisher get two extra anyway insurance yeah I'm the fish I don't do that what's xsplit goes for instance well thank you so much for your time Greg can you tell our viewers one more time where they can find you online and get connected and buy your fish products comm select aquatics calm and on youtube you also have a channel right and and as select aquatics most of most of the videos that deal with the websites called select aquatics presents if you go to the website there is a link on the top right of the page for select aquatics Channel and every video that I've done that deals with anything in the website which is all this electronics presents videos is listed right there you click on the picture go to the video and that will all be kept up to date as well and is also sometimes right now I don't know if there is but future videos I have planned oh yeah definitely check outs like aquatics calm because when I went there it was like an encyclopedia very readable encyclopedia full of information so anything you want to know about the fish he keeps how to take care of them and more information beyond that definitely check out the website thank you so much thank you a lot of fun
