so we just finished up a full kitchen build this week in our workshop this kitchen is going in our simple house build and we're going to put out a video showing uh start to finish everything that we did here but in this video i wanted to take a quick second and demystify and simplify the process of hanging these cabinet doors on these carcasses so what i got here is an over the range cabinet it's going to have two doors like this we ordered these doors from barker door not promotional but they do a really good job there's a lot of door companies out there free shipping very reasonable so what we're going to do is add these doors to the lower part and the rest of this cabinet will get painted white as well there'll be crown molding on the top and and then the vent hood will go underneath all of this in this video i just want to show you how to add these doors so they look very professional that there's no guesswork it's a simple process and um it's easy to do so first things first um choosing the hinge okay so let's talk a little bit about the hinge itself so i love these type of hinge they're called a concealed or euros style hinge for a variety of reasons they're hidden they have so much adjustment which means it has a lot of forgiveness when you're installing it they're so easy to install they last the way that they're installed they're embedded into your cabinet door so it's a solid install it opens and closes so nice you don't have to have a magnetic clasp you know whatever you're doing get on board with using this type of hinge on your cabinetry the first thing you need to know is is your cabinet frameless like mine is where the raw plywood edges are on the front and this came from shelf help so all the edges are finished with edge banding or is there a 1x2 trim piece around the front edges of your cabinet so if it doesn't have the 1x2 trim it's called frameless sometimes it's called euro if it does have the 1x2 trim it's called a face frame cabinet if you have a frameless cabinet like mine there's really only two options for overlay option number one is the most common and that is a full overlay door which is what i'm going to do here and it means that the cabinet door almost fully overlays this plywood edge that is going to be the most common if you have say two doors that are sharing the same plywood in the middle you're gonna do a half overlay frameless cabinet hinge so that would look something like this two doors on the same piece of plywood okay so this is not common this is really only if you're doing custom cabinetry i'll leave a link where you can buy these half overlay but it is a solution if you're building what i call townhouse style cabinets where you got shared walls in between this is a solution for that it works very good i've done it many times and it's the same process to install the hinges it's just the overlay differs a little bit so that you can get this kind of um gap in between in the doors to open and close right okay so um even though i'm doing a frameless cabinet i want to talk a little bit about face frame cabinets so so with the face frame cabinet you'll basically just have like a one by two which is inch and a half wide trim all the way around the front of your cabinet and then your door will go over like that so the overlay is simply how much this door overlays the face frame so the most common is a full overlay an inch and a quarter but you can also get like one inch overlay where it covers two thirds or half inch overlay if you have cabinet doors on a face frame that are sharing the same one by two townhouse style as they call it then all you would do is buy half inch overlay hinges and then they could share and they only overlay half as much so the main difference between a frameless hinge is it's got a flat mounting plate like that a face frame hinge has this so when you install it it cuts the wood regardless if you have base frame or frameless hinges the installation is almost exactly the same except for how you attach it to the cabinet so i'm going to go through how to put doors on this cabinet with the famous install method and i'll give some tips on how to do it with the face frame okay one more thing before we get started on this is i want to talk a little bit how to order your door sizes so what i do is i measure the inside width here and then i say okay what kind of overlay hinge do i have so i'll measure the inside width because i want a half door right all right and then i'll say how much of an overlay do i want if i want a half inch overlay then i'm going to add a half inch here to that width and then if i want a half inch at the top and a half inch at the bottom i add that in takes all the guesswork out of ordering doors all you have to do is measure the opening and add a little bit until you get the right number okay so let's go ahead and start with the install so you're going to need to bore holes in the back of your door and you can use a force your bit or you can use a jig if you do a lot of them i definitely recommend investing in a jig the one that i like is this craig one because it has so many options for adjusting it automatically sets the depth so you never have to worry about drilling too deep or not deep enough it's just a great tool it's not that expensive if you're doing a lot of cabinet doors this is a must-have if you're not doing a lot of cabinet doors just buy yourself one fours in your bit and that will work just fine all right let's get started so i've marked where i want the hinges attached this is really important so you don't drill on the wrong side so this just this jig just attaches to the drill and you get it in there nice and tight the nice thing is is it's pre-adjusted for the depth so you can't over drill it you can you just place it where you want it and honestly there is the standard is about three inches but it doesn't really matter as long as it's not where you might want to put a cabinet pull out or you have some trim or something in the way those are just some things to think about so what i'll do is just it has a measuring guide here so i can be consistent at least and then just go ahead and clamp the jig down and that's just to keep it in place [Music] okay so the holes are all drilled and i want to say one more thing is if you didn't have the jig that i have most of the hinges come with a template so you can just use that template to draw how far um we do a five millimeter offset and um usually it doesn't matter between face frame or frameless cabinet hinges the offset's all the same okay and that's the standard so that you could find an off hinge but i'm just saying that's the standard okay so now we're going to start installing the hinges so what i do is i'll just go ahead and put them in a hole and you can do this kind of thing where you take a square and then square them up or um you can do this kind of thing where you take a square board and then just square them both up at the same time and then what i'll do is take a clamp in the middle and then that's all clamped in place those hinges can't move now we just need to drill the screw holes in okay so it's really important that when we put these screws in that come with the hinge that let's say we put this the screw here on accident you know it's going to push the hinge out and it won't be in alignment so it's really important that we put it in the exact center so a foolproof way is to use these self-centering pre-drill bits and basically when you put pressure sorry when you put pressure on it a uh pre-drilling bit will pop out here and exactly center it so let's try that out so i just put it in then i can just go ahead and do that to all the screw holes all right see how they're perfect in there and i can just very easily screw the screws in one thing i want to caution you about is if you're not a regular drill user it is very easy to over strip these screw holes especially if your cabinet door is mdf or particle board so i'm going to recommend if you're new to this just use a screwdriver and then you have complete control over how tight you're tightening that screw hole in there and it's not going to over strip it you'll just feel when it's snug it's perfect we want your doors to last a very long time okay and if you do strip one out don't worry there is a way of fixing it if you want to see how let me know in the comments okay so let's see how this worked out for us see that wasn't hard at all right okay so the door is done the hinges are on but now we need to attach it to the cabinet and this can be a little bit confusing because you're like oh you know do i touch it here how much of a gap do i need but this is actually very very simple to do so all you need to do is just close these hinges and you know if this was in the cabinet like that right so all we need to know is this measurement here all right so what we're going to do is take just any scrap piece of wood that's three quarters inch thick and then we'll just set our hinges on them like that and i like to leave just a little bit of room for those foam sticky pads on the cabinet so they shut nicely and then i'll just mark like the center of this and i can take my tape and just measure what that was so right there we know with a hundred percent certainty an inch and three eighths right so then i can just go into my cabinet and make a mark an inch and three-eighths there's no guesswork involved in this method i'm going to make a second mark an inch and 3 8. and then i can take a straight edge in between the two okay so we have our lines drawn right here you can see them and we know 100 certainty where those lines are if you're using the same hinges repeatedly you always know what this distance is so all i have to do is take these hinges and the first thing i'll do is kind of line up the overlay on the top and the bottom of the door here and then i can just pull it back so that line is in the center of my hinge attachment plates you just want to make sure you start your screw right in the middle of that line or use the self-centering pre-drill bit right on that line so we got the other door installed and i promise you this was the very first try and look how great it looks so it's just a matter of breaking it down into the right steps and just following those steps i'm going to leave a link in the description that will kind of outline those steps and the things you need to look forward to the different types of hinges and which one to pick so make sure you check that out pin it so you don't lose it so when you do get a cabinet project you know exactly what to do thanks again for watching this week guys we'll see you next monday you
