lot of people this is about to help you it's about to help you i'll tell you why because uh we live in a time where we do what i call sunday morning psychiatry or psychology or distant diagnosis and what that means is is that we would look at a person from far away we learn a few selective uh definitions or descriptions from psychology um especially the ones that have been using social media quite a bit and then we we will lend or marry these definitions to people we know while excluding our own behavior and and the the word of choice the description or the label of choice in these times is narcissistic when it's when you don't like a person they're narcissists when a person does something um that is never on best interest they're narcissists when a person is everything is narcissism i'm here to tell you that a lot of stuff that you think is narcissistic behavior then it's not it's not there's a type of person and some of us watching today are in that category we fit the category of what i call um impulsive impetuous rash people and i'ma wait till i'm watching um on my facebook and i want you to go to share this let's get let's get this shared because what i want to do is i want to get as many people awake and alert and involved in this this morning because this is a topic that we've got to discuss um what i like to do as i study the word of god is i like to um look into the word of god hear the word of god as it relates to ministering to people and see what the lord is saying concerning his people in this day i don't like to teach on stuff that's not relevant i don't like teaching stuff that's just simply spiritual i want to talk about stuff that we're experiencing uh day in and day out and for some of us we don't know what we're looking at we think it's one thing and it's it's the next and so i'm watching the numbers i'm waiting till we get to a certain place and i'm gonna start teaching while i'm doing that uh communion city it's good to see you um reach out to each other up get some money tell them wake up it's time they need to they need the word uh as we prepare to teach this morning there is a disconnect in the land a disconnect between our families the disconnect between churches and members of disconnect between political parties and and our races there's a major disconnect happening in the earth and i believe it's the lord's doing from the perspective of it's been there all along but we've been hiding it we've been actually just um calling it something that is not and that's part of what we're going to talk about today uh we are big into labels we're big into into defining and to pointing the finger and it um it's time for us to come to understanding so while we're while i'm waiting for these i'm gonna wait for these numbers to kind of ramp up uh right now we're at about uh maybe 60 something but i want to continue to start out this morning so um this topic of impulsive behavior is something that that we all at times had to deal with you have been impulsive at some point in your life whether you want to admit it or not and so as we as we pray we'll get into the word of god and i pray that today your life will be shifted your perspective will be lifted and god will do something in you that will cause you to kind of take a step back and um make some corrections that will help you towards your future so father in jesus name i pray for every person today that you are desire to touch through the word of god we have a lot to share and maybe we'll be able to share most of it but by the holy spirit i've asked if you choose my words and my thoughts every narrative every every illustration metaphor simile whatever i use let it be glorifying to you and let it be lord igniting to the minds of the people give instruction god give wisdom cause us the lord to pay attention so we can benefit from the holy spirit today in jesus name and amen all right so let's get started so this word impulsive uh and the reason this is important you say pastor well i don't know how this pertains to me if you keep listening you're gonna see from the scriptural example i'm gonna use that a lot of times we do things without really thinking them through and in the scripture that i'm going to focus on two main character characters today to show you how number one um god uses impulsive people because on the on the flip side of every negative emotion every negative description or label of a person there is a benefit intended by god in other words dysfunction has to come out of function and so an impulsive person is really just a person who has great energy who's there driven to get things done but the one thing that makes an impulsive person impulsive is that they lack foresight the definition of this word it means impetuous emotional acting without forethought or insight impulsive people are usually hot-headed from the negative perspective they're hard-headed they're very adventurous and sometimes they're often often reckless i'm gonna be giving you more definitions as we go along but i found that people who are the most prophetic uh prophetic in that they have the gift of seeing the future tend to be the most impulsive because what they tend to do is to is to um not give much weight to moments and they're always rushing towards the future that they see so if you are a prophetic person and you're watching me i want to give you this bit of information i think it's going to help you if you're a prophetic person you have to understand that although you can see the future you have a responsibility to now i want to say that again if you are a prophetic person you have a prophetic insight you have prophetic dreams you have the gift of prophecy you walk in the office of a prophet you have to be careful that because you see the future does that mean you always have to go to it um what we tend to do as prophetic leaders especially is we tend to drop things and people often you get it and so my phone just started talking to me okay there you go we tend to drop things and people often and what that means is we'll be working on something in the present and we'll see something in the future and we'll drop what we're working on in the present and rush to the future not realizing that people made a commitment to the present there's a present commitment so i have to actually build out and finish my present commitment before i go to the future i see if i don't do that then i'm labeled or i'm called impulsive in scripture another word for impulse is rashness i'm a rash in other words i i do things without um caution i do things without thought and the word of ration would rush um um are one letter apart and that's not i don't think by coincidence normally a rash person is always a russian person always rushing to get to the next stop never um never giving weight as i said or gravity to the now to the moment and so as i said earlier we often play the role of saturday morning or sunday morning psychiatrists by diagnosing people's behavior so that we can properly label them label them we're not authorized to label people god didn't call us to diagnose people unless we called to some profession that does but it's not our call we're called to love and deliver not labeling diagnose that's not our calling okay so many who are called narcissists and i want to speak to this real quickly they're not really narcissists at all for my observation they're simply impulsive what it means is is that they'll do things that that seems to just be benefiting them but many people who are especially leaders that i know they will rush to get a thing done because they look at the very next thing and the people who are watching around them it looks like they're just doing things to benefit themselves now sometimes that is true they are narcissistic leaders and they're narcissistic followers they're narcissistic parents and they're narcissistic children narcissism does not just occupy one realm or one one um level of of of being it's everywhere but everyone that you call a narcissist is not a narcissist because we're not familiar with with the term impulsive we as i said we use distant diagnosis to put them in to put people in a neat little box so we can avoid them or we could keep on comfortably misunderstanding them and a lot of people that you think i know here i know that person they just listen just that you don't even know them you've never met them you never talk to them everybody's saying the same thing about them and let me say something to you about about what everybody is saying take note of this when jesus was crucified he would not have been found guilty at the trial if false witnesses had not come forward saying the same thing they all said the same thing they all talk you say well they didn't even know each other right they said the same thing they said we heard him say he will tear the temple down and rebuild it in three days he did say that but they weren't close enough to him to know what it meant and so because three three or four people coming and saying the same thing about a single person it doesn't mean that the person is that it means that the three or four people have the same heart what you need to do is even if a million people come forth giving a certain testimony about a person that you do not know you need to first ask the question what do these people have in common and it could be say well all of them used to be all of them used to serve at that place right and they don't serve there anymore which tells you that's that's what they have in common they're not there anymore that's my phone making noise okay um they don't serve that anymore and because of that that that common or denominator of not being there anymore creates an issue in their hearts now this doesn't mean that that they're telling a lie no it could simply mean it can simply mean that um that it could mean that the leader is what they say they are or the person is who they say they are but it can simply mean that they have an issue with that person be careful picking up stones to stone people you don't know be careful showing up at a scene of a stoning and pretend and say well you know if they said this person did then they must have done it be careful innocent people have been known known to be thrown under the bus or killed because of people who think they know who the person is okay now i want to do a case study real quickly of an impulsive person remember now if you if you don't understand this person you you you will must misunderstand an impulsive person can look like a lot of things sometimes they could look they could look bipolar sometimes they could look on caring sometimes they could seem just a lot i've dealt with people who are impulsive it is sometimes it could be a lot it's hard to keep up with them okay in genesis chapter 25 we we ramp on a story of esau of esau and and the bible is actually esau and jacob are twins and i want to use esau because he's the most impulsive person that i see in the old testament very impulsive um what again impulsive means that uh he's very emotional he acts without thinking um or without foresight he does not value moments he values the future he values he values what he feels what he needs in that moment and nothing else so in genesis chapter 25 verse or 39 29 he says one day when jacob jacob was cooking some stew esa arrived home from the wilderness exhausted and hungry he had been hunting and the bible says esau said to jacob i'm starved give me some of that red stew and this is how esau got his name by the way edom which means red in verse 31 it says all right jacob replied but trade me your rights as the firstborn son now listen to this here's the agreement so esau is saying i want i want i'm hungry in this moment i just came i'm exhausted and and jacob probably making a joke he probably was making a joke said trade me you're right as the firstborn son and i'll give you some of this too but impulsive people will actually take stuff like that seriously look at the next verse the next verse says he says look i'm down to starvation what good is my birthright to me look at the word now that's the language of impulse okay you have the position of the first one let me explain to you the right of the first bone or the birthright the birthright means that i get double of the inheritance that all my other siblings get so here's how it works my father takes his all that he's worked his life off he gives me um he divides it in two parts okay he gives me one half from me alone and then all my siblings have to share the other half did you just get that the birthright says if a man has 10 children the first he will take what he he would take what he worked for his whole life divided in two parts he will give the first the first one gets double it's that's what the double portioning anointing comes from is a portion of the firstborn so in this case um esau was going to get two times as much as jacob and he traded it in that moment and the question he asked is what's good is what good is it to me now look at the next verse verse 33 and the bible says that jacob said first you must swear that your birthright is mine so esau swore on an oath which back then and today under oath you make you swear to tell the truth the whole truth another but true you're saying this if i don't if this is not what i intend to do then let me die you swear to god that's what he did he swore on an oath thereby selling all his rights as the firstborn to his brother jacob verse 34 says um uh then jacob gave esau some bread and lentils too he saw ate the meal then he got up and left he showed he showed contempt for his rights as the firstborn son literally let me put it in perspective he ate the stew he wiped his mouth and he walked off like he didn't like nothing major just happened you just traded your freaking birthright you just gave your wealth away and that's what impulse does an impulsive person does not care about the moment all they care about is that they get what they want and they do what they desire um they set their sights on only on what they see they don't see other people it doesn't make him narcissistic it makes them impulsive okay that's for all my sunday morning or in this case saturday morning quarterbacks or psychiatrists okay now also so esau is our first real example of this impressive person scripture setting his position in the family for a mess of stew and it triggered a family mess that's going on today look at verse 33 again i want to show you something about the now because of their now in the in the now nature impulsive people always make bad business decisions it's listen and the reason i'm teaching this is because a lot of us have been in situations with impulsive people and we're still recovering from it and if you're an impulsive person and people are running away from you you need to stop for a minute and really listen to what the holy spirit is saying you if if you are impulsive um you know i i love the language of our culture today and i've always loved slang slang is my thing i love it um you know what you asked about a person said man he a lot the same person is a lot i love that i love that we how did we come up with that he's a lot she's a lot and what it means is the person has so much going on like back in the day about the date myself there was a cartoon where one of the characters was called the tasmanian devil and the tasmanian devil you come in spinning and and just when he was around there was never peace because he was always all over the place that's an impulsive person the everywhere and nowhere now watch this so they all they make bad business decisions they make rash agreements based on how they're feeling right now the positive part of the personality of an impulsive person is that is that they make things happen and tell you what what's really attractive about an impulsive person is that they can make if you and what happens to leaders many times is we have a portion of our vision where nothing is happening and this person will come in and start making all these changes and we say man let's get that let's hire that person because of the impulse it's the driven personality to get things done but you have to understand that's the positive side the negative side is they create unnecessary crisis every impulsive person that i've ever led either had a trail of body bags a trail of unfinished business they always kept stuff going they talked too much they will stress you out when you see a mess in fact you label them in the phone do not answer yeah but but when they're working for you they will get anything done they grieve everyone around them but they'll get things done but when they're working against you they're like they're like a constant named storm i mean they're like a hurricane coming through with water and winds in genesis chapter 27 i want to continue with easter as the example i want to show that impulsive people think a little of the consequences of their actions until it's too late they don't think about it i want to show you genesis chapter 37 and i'm 27 in verse 30 as soon as esau had finished blessing isaac rather had finished blessing jacob and almost before jacob had left his father esau returned from his hunt now this is critical let me tell you why so fast forward with fast forwarding to the time now esau has sold his blessing to his brother and now his brother goes to the father who's the one who actually imparts the blessing gives the inheritance and does the whole nine he um jacob now goes with his brother's oath to his father but his father would have never went for that arrangement because it was impulsive it was rash it was wrong so what he had to do he had to disguise himself and act like he was his brother his father isaac now who is blind can't tell the difference but he has an inkling of discernment about it but he's not for sure because his eyes don't work okay now so uh um jacob goes in the bible says and uh as soon as isaac blesses him esau comes from the field esau prepared a delicious meal and brought it to the father which is interesting do you notice here that esau could actually cook so how do you sell your birthright to someone for something you can do what what's the mindset if issa knows how to prepare a delicious meal and bring it to his father then my question is why didn't he just take the time on that day when he came from the field hungry to prepare himself as a delicious meal the answer is impulsive people normally want things ready made impulsive people want things ready made for example our imposter person will see a couple hanging out they're looking cool they're looking like they're having fun and the post person's like i need now you attracted to the mate of the person because they already made i want one just like that that no you usually you have to make those okay so he could actually cook in in verse 31 he says he brings the meal to this father then he said sit up my father and eat my wild game so you can give me your blessing in verse 32 says but isaac answered or asked him who are you issa replied well it's your son esau your firstborn son verse 33 isaac began to tremble uncontrollably and said then who just served me while again in other words who just served me this meal i just ate i've already eaten and i blessed him just before you came and yes as we said that blessing that i gave it must stand isaac is telling esau wait who's that that just came in because someone came i thought it was you and they fed me and i blessed them with a blessing that's irrevocable next verse says this when esau heard his father's word he let out a loud and bitter cry oh my father what about me bless me too he begged but isaac said your brother was here and he tricked me he has taken away your blessing esau exclaimed no wonder his name is jacob for he for now he has cheated me twice first he took my righteous the firstborn and now he stole my blessing duh issa they went together you don't get the the right of the firstborn is what qualified you for the blessing and but in the moment an impulsive person doesn't think about the ramifications or the connections of what he's doing you know so an impulsive person would literally come talk to you about your best friend is what an impulsive person would literally talk to a family member about a family member just not think that just not thinking things through an impulsive person will go down will go and get a loan that they can't make the payment on their victories and they got the loan not thinking about i can't make the payment i cannot sustain the payment for month to month so when you are impulsive here's what god will do god would god would literally um with whole blessing from you literally uh hold things in in um lay away so to speak from you to get you free from this impulsive nature so that when he gives you what he has for you you don't lose it in in situations like this he cheated me twice he took away my right is the firstborn now he stole my blessing he said the question is haven't you saved even one blessing for me do i get anything next verse it says this esau said i'm sorry isaac says to esau i have made jacob your master and i've declared that all his brothers will be his servants i have guaranteed him an abundance of grain and wine what is left for me to give he said the question is what is left for me to give you my son i've given basically everything esau pleaded but but do you have one blessing you notice no matter what his father said you could but don't you have one that is what you're looking at is i'm laughing but it's not funny because that's the nature of an impulsive person is there anything you can do and and and his father probably want to ask him did you think about that in the moment did it occur to you what what isaac gave to jacob was what he was going to give to esau he was going to make esau jacob's master remember they were twins that that notwithstanding or even if they weren't twins when the father blesses the person with the birthright what if what eventually happens is that that son that daughter becomes the person okay now so issa pleaded he says but do you have only one blessing well my father blessed me too then esau broke down and wept impulsive people think of consequences of their actions too late so now let me show you another aspect of a person so remember if you follow the story where you found the story esau has made an impulsive decision he gave his birthright to his brother now the ramifications and consequences of it are not falling out and and this is what i found in my dealing with impulsive people now he has the unmitigated gall to be offended with both you know he's mad with his brother which he should be to something to some degree but now he's angry with his father he's spiteful he wants to act now spitefully towards his father because his father in his mind should have known better how could his father have known better when human oath before god so god i'm going to give you a part of the story that you may not pay attention to i believe god was involved in dumbing down the discernment of esau i'm sorry of isaac the father i'll show you what i'm talking about there are times when when god is determined that you're going to have consequences for what you've done he would literally hide you in plain sight and there's a thing where if you are intent on doing things a certain way then god god can dumb down your discernment i think um in one scripture um it's in the deepest sense of the word god can give you over to a spirit of stupor a strong delusion come he will give you over to a stronger illusion now this is the dumbing down your discernment is a mild case of that this the deep case of it is when god gives you over to complete uh deception where you are deceivable and there's nothing anyone can do about it okay now i want to show you what esau does now because his father had to have to um was bound to an oath i'm gonna show you what esau did in genesis chapter 26 and verse 34 the bible says at the age of 40 esau married two hittite wives judith the daughter of biry and bassamath the daughter of elon in verse 35 go to the next verse it says but esau's wives made life miserable for isaac and rebecca now that's a simple statement and it was thrown in towards the end of genesis chapter 26 but what i want to show you is as we go to genesis 28 and verse 6 you're going to you're going to see something that it gives a reason esau didn't just marry these women he married this woman because he was angry he made an impulsive decision he's mad at his father and his mother over the thing that happened but why is he mad at his mother because his mother was behind the whole thing his the lord has spoken to his mother to um esau and jacob's mother and said that the the um the older would serve the younger and instead of her waiting for god to make it happen she she was the one behind the whole thing she was she was a mastermind and so he saw now coming into knowledge of this he decides in a impulsive moment in a rash moment he decides i'm gonna get him back so what does he do he marries the wrong person let me show you something there are more you say well i just don't believe in divorce if you even understood the nature and the circumstances upon which many people have gotten married someone first of all a guy impulsively buys a ring impulsively gets on his knee without thinking that things through could you marry me you impulsively because you're in front of all christ says i'll be glad you stick your hand up ooh you crying if you're posting social media y'all didn't even figure things out the whole thing was impulsive and rash and impetuous the whole thing was what is lacked foresight and caution you didn't you don't even know what his daddy looked like you don't you don't know what was it you don't know what uh if he broke you don't know you know nothing about each other basically all you know probably is that you've had some encounters or or um in measurements entanglements do you know that but but he rashly married two wives and let me show you what it was important in genesis 28 verse 6 it says esau knew that his father had blessed isaac his father isaac had blessed jacob and sent him to padan around to find a wife watch this and that he had warned jacob you must not marry a king that woman so watch this he knew his father warned his brother do not marry canaanite women go back to our homeland find a wife there so it's so petty he also knew that jacob had obeyed his parents and going to padad paden around now look at the next verse it was now very clear that to esau that his father did not like the local canaanite women so what did he do [Laughter] so esau visited his uncle ishmael's family and married one of ishmael's daughters in addition to the wives he already had um it says his wife's name was mahalaf she was a sister of i'm not pronouncing that and the daughter of ishmael ibrahim now the reason i want to point this out to you is because the only reason he married these women is because he knew who his father didn't like him that's what he that's that was his thing his main thing was they don't like it okay well they're gonna do this and such very impulsive making covenants married make according to marriage um um this guy breaks your heart so you impossibly uh pop up with another guy over here or this woman breaks your heart so impossibly proposed to this one that is not safe that is not wise it's not the will of god that time and listen and me coming across saying this on a saturday morning when you still have sleep it's not helping the issue at all because the bottom line is you probably don't want to hear this but i ask you to ask the lord to give you a listening ear and an understanding heart here's why because the very uh the very uh purpose that god will send a message like this is to deliver you is to get you to see what you're dealing with and it's easy to look at other people and say they're impulsive but sometimes it's us an impulsive person will do something not because they want to or because they believe it's right to do but because they see it as a way to get back at others the problem with that approach is that the person you're trying to spite doesn't have to live with the consequences listen to what i'm saying the person you're trying to get back at they don't have to live no so you go over there you do something he breaks your heart and he and he pops up with someone else so you decide well imma give you somebody too listen getting anybody does not mean you have somebody sometimes getting anybody could be just as bad as having nobody but i digress so what does the bible say about impulsive people when you study impulse in the bible look for the word haste hasty okay the bible these are words that translate as impulsive some translations actually translate the word to impulse or impulsive but i want you to have a good idea the bible has a lot of a lot to say about people who struggle with the impulsive nature especially in the books of wisdom being an impulsive person is a violation of wisdom when you start acting impulsively you throw all caution at the door you throw all understanding at the door you you actually bargaining you're trading your future for now and the problem with it is that you're all in now for a few seconds if your season that you that you're trading your future for it it's passing time moves forward your future is more important than your past it really really is and when your future becomes now you manage it as if it's just transitory in other words i'm not going to stay in this forever everything you have everything you listen i look back at some old stuff that um that i uh properly that had bought and i remember when it was new when it was the in thing i remember when it was valuable and it's not anymore because because now is a very transitional time you're moving forward you've got to keep that in mind now let me give you a bunch of scripture really quickly about what the bible says about impulse and being impulsive and being hasty or rash in psalm 116 and verse 11 or give me a different translation if you don't mind i want to give him uh oh i'm looking at the screen in front of me give me there you go that's it i said in my haste all men are liars i said in my haste all men are liars when we are impulsive we tend to generalize everything all of them are blank all black people are blank all white people are black all people who live in the hood are blank or all leaders are blank all all churches are blank all shut up that is you in your haste making a generalization it's a rash conclusion it is not true all leaders can't be blank and every leader you ever met is a problem that tells me what something is tell me one thing but actually one of two things either you have super poor judgment or you're the problem yep i said it on this good old saturday morning i'm bold as a lion listen if every leader you ever sat under is bad you know how to choose leaders or two you're just a terrible person to lead all all david said i said in my haste in my in my impulsive state in a rash statement i said all men are lives all men are not liars watch this now all all people are capable of fabrication but david calls a hasty statement there are people who are who are honorable who value honesty and value integrity uh to say a person is a lie i mean that they habitually tell lies as a way of of um communicating of involving themselves of protecting themselves okay in proverbs chapter 14 verse 29 we find another scripture it says people with understanding control their anger a hot temper shows great foolishness give me home a christian stand the bible i want to show you something about this so um one of the definitions of an impulsive person or one of the um the symptoms of impulse is being quick tempered being hot tempered i mean we'll go to from zero to and five seconds flat um it says here a patient person shows great understanding but a quick tempered one promotes foolishness and so what we learned from this is that impulsive arrest people think think i tend to act foolishly more times than not what it means is they get angry and when they get angry um i don't even know this but you tend to make worse decisions when you're angry there's some people they stop thinking once they start feeling i want to say it again there's some people who stop thinking once they start feeling and so the enemy what he will do is he will provoke them and they will get angry and once they get angry he can slip all kinds of things in they make rash decisions they become impulsive they break relationship they spend money they don't have to do all kinds of stuff because they're emotional an impulsive person the bible calls it it's foolishness the bible says it promotes folly it makes you act in a way that is just not proper listen a fool and his money is soon parted the bible says a lot of things a fool in that moment was saying his heart there is no i am god there is no god all right in proverbs 19 and verse 2 check out this scripture it says also that the soul be without knowledge it is not good and he that hasteth with his feet sinneth the bible remember now the word haste in scripture especially in the king james and older virgins the word haste is the word for impulse an impulsive person will always sin in other words the word feat speaks to going to the wrong place or making the wrong moves so what we learned from this is the lack of foresight because a part of being impulsive is that we lack foresight we act with no full knowledge the lack of foresight in the situation puts a rash or impulsive person um in unnecessary situations of disadvantage unnecessary situations of disadvantage what does it mean what do you mean by that i mean that they just put themselves in a position where they can't win they cannot win another example here uh is in proverbs 21 and verse 5. proverbs 21 verse 5 says the plans of the diligent certainly lead to profit but anyone who is reckless only becomes poor and so the bible says the bible speaks of this and this again this word reckless is another synonym for impulsive anyone who's impulsive becomes poor because um impulsive people tend to be spur of the moment people impulsive people tend to struggle financially because they always blow money so let me give you a good example so so um you will see a sale okay you know your finances are limited but it's a sale you say you know it's 20 off so you buy the sale if you don't have the money it's not a sale to you it's a sale to people who have the money i mean you see what i'm saying now i'm not clowning what i'm trying to say understand this you have to watch out the marketing industry okay they are set up to target impulse buyers if you are impulsive what they know about impulse buyers here's what they know about impulsive people number one impulsive people are driven people which means you always have a job if you if you're impulsive you're going to have a job you can have a business you have a hustle because impulsive people won't get it done the drive the impetus the impetus in you drives you forward the problem is as quickly as you get it if you're impulsive that you you spend it just as quickly marketing people know that they know you want to spend your money they know you're going to give up on stuff or i'll give your stuff away so they market to you and and they study psychology they have they have psychologists on their teams to tell them how to target people who are impulsive and get your stuff from you okay the plans of the diligent lead to profit but anyone who's reckless or impulsive becomes poor it doesn't mean and it's not always with money sometimes you're poor in relationships because you're quick to cut people up you quick to tell people off i mean you you just quit to every every little disagreement you were ready to go to war over what you you want to fight people who are there for your good why all because you're in the moment you're reckless you're hard-headed you're impulsive that's not the word of god for you okay now go to the proper proverbs chapter 25 verse eight i got a couple more then we're almost done it says don't take a matter to court hastily what does that mean it means don't act impulsively when when it's time to consider or escalating a situation it says otherwise what will you do afterwards if your opponent if your opponent humiliates you in other words when something blows up in the moment what this what this proverb is saying is don't rush to try to get it resolved by by all involving other people sit back first calm down think it through and then see what is in this whole thing that you should own and the five times i said i wasn't saying nine times out of ten but fifty percent of the time what you'll find is you were as wrong as they were fifty percent of time you find that maybe you saw it wrong fifty percent of the time it could be solved with with uh conversation um reconciliation but it but what i find with people who are impulsive is that they escalate things really really quickly they're either quick to blow a situation a situation out of proportion or they're quick to invite people into disagreement so you'll see a lot of people if something goes wrong in private and it's on social media and i got the receipts and you putting all that's impulse and the holy spirit will attack your impulsive behavior i don't know if you if you say that you love jesus i'ma tell you right now if you're saving you love jesus you've been the situation where the holy ghost told you do not post that the holy ghost will tell you do not call that person nobody's gonna say no stop right now because it is not good sometimes you think i'm just i'm just embarrass them it's impossible to sling mud and not be muddy it's impossible to try to make people look bad and you don't come off in some way looking bad it's impossible to make people look small and you don't come off looking small and so it's important that you don't rest in escalating a matter you take your time and you see what the ask the lord what should i do about this and sometimes it's a growth moment sometimes a time for you to sit with yourself and go you know what okay they were wrong but you know i've been wrong too i'mma show mercy or they were wrong i'm just let it go proverbs 29 verse 20 our next scripture it says do you see a man who speaks too soon there's more hope for him than for fool give me another translation of that this is again speaking about impulsive people there is more hopeful fool than for someone who speaks without thinking impulsive people who just talk will say anything the lack of listening skills that an impulsive person have caused them to be always talking when they should be listening because they're talking when they should be listening they miss details uh and ecclesiastes chapter 5 and verse 2 amplifies that it says do not be hasty to speak and do not be impulsive to make a speech before god here's what it says take it be quick to hear slow to speak don't be so hasty to speak and don't be impulsive when you in in this case when you're making a vow to god i mean don't promise the lord listen vows are very important vows are more powerful than we understand here in the west god takes vows very very seriously matter of fact when you start vowing this i vow to do i never when you start doing that you're literally using the power of your creative words to put or handcuffs on yourself you binding yourself to certain uh courses of action in the future if you do it impulsively that means you're doing it without thinking and the consequences can surprise you a lot of us that what we call i'm just having i'm just in a bad season knowing a consequential season and that we need to actually go before the lord and get the handcuffs broken from us because we're bound to something we said or we bound to something we promised okay so in ecclesiastes 7 verse 9 um it says don't let your spirit rush to be angry for anger resides or abides in the bosom of a fool or in the heart of a fool this scripture um deals with the impulse to quickly become angry and this is the thing i call subjectivity you've heard me teach on subjectivity before put it in the comments subjectivity and what it deals with is i see the entire world from from the little circle i've drawn for myself and this and many times when especially leaders when you say a leader is arrogant or leaders prideful or whatever impulsive leaders tend to see the whole world from where they're standing the benefit of that is they're able to navigate and measure where things should go and how things should be the danger of seeing the world only from where you're standing is you're not sensitive to what people need you're not you're not aware of what your wars or actions can be doing to people you don't know what that is whether or not people are ready to go where you try to lead them and it comes across like pride and if you're angry when people don't respond the way you want to respond it says that you are suffering from impulse you are your impulsive person so i want to close down our lesson today with uh some some insight on how to handle this peter among the lord's disciples was the impulsive one and i want to make a statement that's gonna blow your mind most of the great leaders i know are to some degree impulsive but there's a reason for that because remember on the negative the negative side is the impulsive the positive side is that they're driven to get things done they're driven to get things done that means the the power of discipline the power of counselors around you if you are a leader and you say past that tend to be impulsive surround yourself with people counselors advisors who understand how advice works advi advisement is not direction it's just perspective okay you surround yourself with people who can tell you listen this is how i see or even say to you men of god that is wrong if you surround yourself with people that only know how to say yes and you're an impulsive person you're rushing towards disaster i was i was um shopping for a plane some years ago and um the broker who was working with me um suggested that i get this high-end single-engine plane and my thing was i don't want to play with just one engine i want to play with at least two if one fails we got another one and the guy says to me he said what do you think happens when one engine one engine fails on a 20 engine plane i said you can fly somewhere and land safely he said no he said when you have a twin engine plane and one engine fails he says the other engine flies you to the crash zone and at first i didn't get it he's laughing i'm like then it dawned on me it's like he said it's better to get this plane right here with a super great single engine than to get a cheaper twin engine plane where the the second engine is just decoration and what i'm saying to you is if you are an impulsive leader you need people around you that can tell you what you're doing is rash what you're doing is it's not going to serve us well in the future okay of all the disciples that jesus had peter was the impulsive one you knew that he was the most impulsive he didn't think things through and because of this he always came across as overconfident irresponsible sometimes he came across as overbearing but jesus did not throw him away see the thing with you with your sunday morning psychiatry and your distance diagnosis the problem with you is is when you once you see a defect in a person they oh they can't be called of god you don't even understand the people god used god called people that didn't bathe okay there were people you go through the scripture they had all kinds of issues god god used people that would look you super crazy that means now if god will use people who are flawed he would use you and the people some of the leaders you look and say i i could never follow that person god you said anyway god called him because the impulsive does not mean god did not call them god calls us for function not for dysfunction you've got to remember that there are people that god that god will use for great things that you would totally disagree with ask the children of israel they did not think moses was their guy all right now look at luke chapter 22 and verse 31 impulsive people are always in danger of satan sifting the word sift means to shake god i'm sorry jesus says to to peter simon simon he said look out satan that has asked to sift you pious and in the greek highest is a plural or pronoun you are satan's act to sift you all like wheat and then the next verse it says this the next part of the verse it says but i've prayed for you singular you peter that your faith may not fail you and you singular when you have turned back strengthening your brothers that's what he says satan asks for all of you that even saved you as wheat but peter i prayed for you why is it that satan acts as sift all of them and jesus didn't pray for all of them because only peter was impulsive and in the mind of the lord that impulsive nature was a danger i'm gonna show you a couple scriptures but it was a danger when you are impulsive um you tend to lose faith really quickly you your faith rushes up it swells up and gets hot you're hot with faith and you go forward and then when you rush and it doesn't happen then your face dives down into like you go from hot to from white hot to freezing cold in a matter of one trial that's impulse jesus said i'm praying for you that your faith will level out and that you be patient and constant as you go through what you're going through because impulsive people tend to either be all in or out is this too much for this great old saturday morning okay i was going to ask my staff saying are there any impulsive people in the room that i need to lay hands in proxy you know okay so matthew chapter 14 verse 25 around three in the morning the bible says he who's jesus came to them walking on the sea when the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified it's a ghost they said and they cried out in fear immediately jesus spoke to them he says have courage it is i don't be afraid lord if it's you peter answered [Laughter] not show me a sign it's command me to come to you in the water first of all what behooves you but what pleasantry did you see on the water that you want to walk on storm-tossed waters did it look fun it was just impulse and now now you this is i want you to see but if you want to know how god responds to things okay look at how jesus responded jesus said i came to show you the father so jesus god has an impulsive son you and you say um you see something that's exciting that's happening and you already have the faith for it but you say if it's you god make that happen for me and god says okay come and so the bible says the very next thing uh uh climb out uh climbing out of the boat after jesus said come peter started walking on the water coming towards jesus what fun it is to walk on the water with the lord look the next verse it says this uh but when he saw the strength of the wind as if the wind wasn't strong before he was afraid so notice this now in his impulse in his impulse he did not even take into consideration the conditions that's what we tend to do lord of this you bid me come what wonderful faith but when i get out the boat i can't i can't start an impulse an impulsive person would do something in faith in the moment and then look around and go it's not sustainable i can't continue to do this i don't even know why i said yes i'm sorry i can't stand this marriage i'm sorry but didn't you see all that before they didn't think about it and the bible says beginning to sink and that's what happens when we move in impulse and not in faith he said when he stepped out on the word he stepped out on the sea okay based on a word and and he turned he looked away then he said pastor wait a minute you told me he stepped out of the word yes and i'm gonna tell you this right now peter got peter moved on a word from the lord but if you could read the scripture and move on a word and not be the lord i'm gonna give a perfect example someone said to me the other day i'm not social distancing not wearing a mask not getting vaccinated and i ain't doing none of that because the blood of jesus covers me you know i said okay but i had an internal conversation if you know those of you who know me know what i said as yourself you're looking at a fool and chances are you have to bury that negro pretty soon i don't listen because what happens is you're not thinking about you're not remember a part of of of defeating impulsive behavior is thinking things through so he looks at the way he begins to be afraid and he says lord save me which was a wonderful prayer in verse 31 the bible says um immediately jesus reached out his hand caught hold of him thank god for the mercy of god and said to him he says you of little faith oligosuque little faith small faith why did you doubt why are you double-minded and that's the danger of when an impulsive person starts to walk into the consequence of a rash decision um if this if you if you could remain in faith god could actually catch up the time but what happens to us many times is we get become so focused on the danger of the moment that we begin to doubt and we get begin to sink and the lord has to come and swoop in and rescue us but i promise you this because the lord rescues an impossible person doesn't mean they're gonna stop being impulsive nope it's a part of personality look at matthew chapter 17 verse one i'm gonna show you this is three chapters later after six days jesus took peter james and his brother john and led them up a mountain by themselves he was transformed in front of him this is transfigured in front of them and his face shone like the sun even his even his clothes became as white as the light suddenly moses and elijah appeared to them talking with him then peter said to jesus now imagine this jesus is in a conversation with two people that are supposedly dead just creep create the moment okay he he's growing white like some ghost i mean he's brilliant the white the light is brilliant and peter's standing there and with that now well me i just check it out i'll take in the moment but not peter peter said lord it's good for us to be here he interrupts the conversation that they're having it's good for us to be here if you want to i'll make three tabernacles here one for you one for moses and one for elijah and while he's talking verse five of while he's talking uh the bastard while he's still speaking suddenly a bright cloud covered over them and a voice from the cloud said this is my beloved son i take the light in him listen to him translation this is my beloved son i'm pleased with him not with you shut up that's what that's what god was saying peter stop talking this is not a talking moment control yourself when the disciples heard it they fell face down and they were terrified what i love about jesus that he came over to him he touched them and he says get up don't be afraid why because he understood that peter is impulsive and what he says to impulsive peter is what he's saying to you today i know you've talked out of turn you acted out of turn you made a mess but the lord is saying to you today don't be afraid don't be afraid he loves you he know he made you you're driven you you oh he you uh when you get excited you want to make things happen immediately he gets it and because of that you sometimes you like to vote in the china shop but god sent this word for you today god will say to you he'll god will send someone to a messenger says stop talking shut up or a leader maybe may rebuke you sterling and it embarrass you hurt your feelings and the lord will come and touch you and say get up don't don't be afraid don't be angry don't be offended just get up let's go because i'm going to need that impulse later on see it was peter who stood up on the day of pentecost this time he's filled with the holy spirit he's bold but he's not he's not impulsive he knows how to step forward he knows how to handle a situation the drive that god gave him now is now being un is under the control of government of the holy spirit and he stands to speak no doubt in fear and trembling this time not with rash impulse like he had before thinking he's better than everyone else it's something about the holy spirit getting a hold of our impulsiveness and harnessing it for the glory of god i want to leave you with this one scripture and i pray this message bless you this morning in john chapter 21 verses one through eight this the bible says after this jesus revealed himself against his disciples by the sea of tiberias he revealed himself in this way simon peter thomas called the twin nathanael from king of galilee zebedee's two sons that's james and john and two of the other disciples were together i'm going fishing simon peter said out of nowhere he gets something i go fishing just impose him and they say well we're coming with you and what interest what's interesting about this and i want to remind you of this is that i said most leaders are impulsive because they always seem to know what they want to do in a world of a sea of people that don't even know where they're going what the next move is an impulsive leader will say follow me you don't necessarily know where he's going or he's going fishing but he has no other details about the fish biting he doesn't know but he he makes a decision to go that's an attractive quality in impulsive leaders and some of you have chosen to follow impossibilities and that's you have to get the good with the bad is a part of it i'm going fishing sign peter said we're coming with you he they told him they went out and got into the boat but that night they caught nothing so they rushed out there i'm going fishing the vision is we're going to catch multiple fishes i mean many fishes and they wouldn't cut nothing when daybreak came jesus stood on the shore notice the interaction of the lord and what he does for people who are impulsive but their hearts are right when the daybreak jesus stood on the shore and however this the disciples didn't know it was jesus next verse says our men jesus asked him do you have any fish and they said no and the next verse says cast your net on the right side of the boat and you'll find some so they did and they were able to haul it in because of a large number of they were unable rather to haul in because of a large number of fish now you see here on the lord it was peter's impulsive idea but the lord came and blessed them it was a timing issue and there's so much weakness preaching that the next verse says therefore the disciple the one who jesus loved said to peter it is the lord it is the lord now look at this when simon peter heard that it was the lord he tied his outer garment around him for he was stripped and he plunged into the sea he's the lord we got the naked he tied the garment around him he jumps into the water starts swimming back but since they were not far from land about 100 yards away the other disciples came in the boat dragging the net full of fish so two things he heard us the lord and we said when he runs the lord that's wonderful but he left us he left his brothers to drag a big old net that was hard to drag impulsive people tend to do that it was his idea to come fishing but he left the people doing the thing that was his idea leaders do that they will and it's not a negative thing they will cast vision for a certain place when the vision is done in their minds there they're moving on to the next thing and the expectation is you catch up with them i hope i'm making sense to you peter it's the lord so he goes to the lord y'all finished bringing the net in and we all meet on the on the our shore and have breakfast with the lord i wanted to to spend some time this morning i don't know what who this is for who the lord sent it for but i believe we all could benefit from it not being impulsive people not living impulsive lives but allowing the lord jesus to lead us allowing ourselves to have full time forethought and um thinking things through being cautious in our moves so the lord could bless us i hope this bless you this morning all right communion city because this is saturday morning and this is our church time of course this there are five words to give and i know you're so super tired of doing this online i know you are i know you are um i could tell but people are not even or watching streams anymore they just want to get back in person and and what to god that everyone everyone would behave so we could get this pandemic under control but folk don't want to behave folks just want to do what they want to do and that's another lesson for another day but it's that time to give and giving is the way we express our faithfulness to god giving us a way that we actually circumcise our income to make sure that the blessing of the lord will be upon it in the old testament there's a law called the law of quran and it speaks of the law of the thing that should be destroyed what does it mean it means that the first the first part of everything that i receive belongs to the lord and the lord says um i need you to get it from among your stuff so i could bless the rest of your stuff it's a wonderful teaching on the law of kareem c-h-e-r-e-m karim look it up online and what it does it speaks to us getting involved a partner with god as it relates to income as it relates to outcomes so if i wish to give that i want you to get involved in and listen you say pastor my money is not doing right don't just don't just give your money pray over it i'll put a word of confession over the thing declare before the lord and god will make it happen it works in my life i know god wants to make it work in your life if i wish to give you consent um i'll go rather to nccfamily.org on instance family app they're all on the screen avail yourself and give the lord bless you and listen i look forward for to whenever we'll get back in person um keep your ears open we love you and we'll see you next time [Applause] [Music] so [Music] [Music] foreign so [Music] you
