we're here at Doncaster cables this is such a fat if you donate just £2 a month bait some little scoundrel tow rag I poke they're a little bit jealous of it third hand endorsing child slave labor he's going to get sprayed in fart spray neutral smelling a woman loved you enough to procreate kind of like plain snooker with a p noodle we're going to start the day with a riddle what has three thumbs nine teeth and is a right good electrician it's my friend and Mentor Oliver and he is with me today to fit some solar panels on the UK's best cable Factory we're here at Doncaster cables basically a cable Factory in the UK where they manufacture the best cable and that's the reason why I use it on all my jobs so you would have seen that from day one the job that we have managed to land is to fit solar onto one of their warehouse Roots now job one is going to be getting it onto the roof let me introduce you to the team all right so this is Oliver from the north he's actually almost identical to Oliver gimnez in every single way that's Chile Oliver as most of you all know him Yes except he's not Oliver V jimz and he lives up north right so these are the solar panels we're using we're using these lovely all black panels we've only got 40 going here and as you can see it is a humongous site so they actually manufacture the cable here every part of this process I believe happens here from copper right through to it being shipped off but the plan is eventually I would love the contract to basically put panels on this whole thing but for now this is the contract I've got so we'll be happy and we'll do that um we are wiring these panels back to a 12 1/2 KW solar Edge inverter three phase I want to be able to have the full remote monitoring for it now onto the roof so this right here is the roof so we're going to be mounting all the panels along this section of roof here on top of each other in portrait and now let me show you inside all right so this is the inside so basically this is the distribution board here that we're coming out of obviously three-phase distribution board they're coming out of this C6 breaker here out and into this three-phase rotary isolator because of all the life Heating and everything that you can see around me it means they will be 100% using everything that is produced on this roof so I think even if you were to cover every square inch of the roof here we worked out that they only cover 12 1 12% of the electrical loads here so yeah there's no point at all adding battery storage so we're doing a PB only system right let's get to it how was your journey up here it's not too bad yeah my area so about an hour yeah I'm sorry to hear that what do you Reon to my van sign writing it's definitely special yeah my favorite thing about it is how you've managed to get it so even on both sides think yeah yeah def matches I'm going to tell you something I did that myself get lost yeah I did that myself do you know what he might actually out Milwaukee you even sick hard hat look at this look at these hard hats in a street fight this is what I'd have be like is protected your head so I can't hear what you're saying protected right so what I'm thinking is we'll put the inverter right here the other side of that mezine that you were just looking at here is just literally the other side of this wall so we could come along maybe p pop out of the Wall come down but then what we'll need to do is find a way to mount everything what I'm thinking that we do is put some unist strut across there lots of stabs of Unistrut along all the way up there and then we can bring our cables down Along on top of the Unistrut straight into the inverter now what I would like to do to kind of showcase the benefits and difference between PV Ultra and traditional methods and as I'm going to do both here I'm going to have one string on PV Ultra and I'm have one other string on galve conjur it so we can see both we can see the difference we want to see how long it takes to do both let's start getting some panels on the roof all right so the next step for us is going to be laying them out so I've already got the guys running string lines across and they've got the first couple of panels out so what I'm thinking is we hug tight to that edge over there when eventually we can do the whole roof it means we don't have to shuffle anything about or really change anything so yeah how you getting on good yeah I've never come across this the roofing material so thin it is thin isn't it it flexes quite a bit well this is the first panel down over here so what we're using are these clery RS so they're designed basically they're the same style screw as this so before people cry that we're ruining how water proof the roof is it's literally the uh identical style of fixing the panels down in the first place so you screw down onto the roof lay the panel onto that and then that basically just clamps on now a little interesting point these aren't the brands that I typically usually go for and the reason being the brands that I were using before there's been a un report that has just come out which I'm going to leave in the description below and that talks about child slave labor in crushing up all the Silicon needed for these panels so I felt it was a bit morally corrupt to be claiming to be green while kind of also somehow third hand endorsing child slave labor in camps in China internment camps or whatever they are basically concentration camps in China so we are changing Brands it's very very hard to be ethical with anything fully nowadays but we're trying our best so yeah that's why we're going for the slightly different panels now I've got something very exciting to share with the guys here Oliver I've got something exciting for you Milwaukee sent no I'm joking what did you say I didn't hear you I said milwauke sent you something it's c a Tam oh nice going to try a Tim Tam slam these are Australian they were sent to me by a subscriber and channel member Jim thank you very much they're awesome but I wanted to share the joys with the people of Yorkshire so there's a place called Australia which is basically just like there what you have to do Tim Tam cam take a bite oh not the whole thing oh we might as well eat that one now what you meant to do do you want to demonstrate nibble corner to Cor corner is my preferred method but slurp it out oh my word eat the slap this is how you keep really high engag in electrical content you [Music] see the state of all right so these guys up here have done nothing but rinse me all day and one of the things they rinse me about is this I've always believed that if someone is really making fun of you for something it's probably because they're a little bit jealous of it Oliver is a good mate of mine I've known him for years and years and years I don't want to have him feeling like I've got something that he doesn't I've got two I don't need two oh no also in this channel we're a big believer in charity that's obviously we are that's why we hired him in fact I'm thinking to run in a little promotion where if you donate just £2 a month we'll give that money to oliv and hopefully he can save up enough to move out from [Music] Batley thing is it's meant to be a little bit rough isn't it chef's kiss now here's the thing you might think that looks terrible because it does but sometimes things are just worse on camera but actually in real life they look absolutely fine I need a Wii and once I've done a Wii we can start getting the AC stuff done so at the minute we're trying to sus out how to get the optimizers onto the cry rail doesn't quite sit nicely see how it kind of sits off and this needs to be facing up into the panel the other thing we can do is just screw straight into the edge you just step it about that little bit yeah and you can just bang it straight through and in what really are you worried about happening is that it's not going to blow away no I'm not well what I'm concerned about is doing a really good job have to say like that is there enough thread terrible no it's not going to tighten sometimes the really simple things that you don't really think are going to slow you down are the things that really slow you down there's nothing really to fix it on it needs to be under the panels so I think what we're going to try now cuz this is just our our test piece rather than blow it out with these we're going to try a 4 mil drill and tap so if we can make something slightly more [Music] refined this is such a faf this is just a bit silly how'd you feel about brass on aluminium disimilar Metals it's disimilar worst case scenario you'll not get it out again if you look at this on the side profile you see one side is higher than the other we have a solution I have these stainless steel self tappers used in conjunction with a rubber washer and precisely three washers this side to space it out I don't call that kick I call that room for um convection so I think that's our solution so now we just need to rinse and repeat that 40 times on the roof and we're good to [Music] go all right so we're flying through it we've got all of the optimizers on and mounted now so what I'm able to do is I'm able to go through the site which I've already built a mapped in the Solar Edge design tool I need to select each panel that is relevant to here to go and scan and then I've got to scan every single one of these optimizers all the way along and then they're all going to be mapped and in so that's actually one of my favorite jobs to do and then we're ready to mount the panels scan that Boop go to the next one boop boop boop and then that all the way along until this whole thing is populated and all of these panels are mapped out on the system let's [Music] go just film that whole thing in slow motion didn't I right guys I have actually made a mistake I've been really stupid here okay with my design I've designed it as two strings but I've designed it as two strings like this one along the top one along the bottom which is you know pretty standard whatever however what that does do is that wastes a ton of cable cuz the positive here and the negative there or vice versa is going to mean you've got to run all the way back and down so if your tray is coming up there or for the PV Ultra it's a question that I've seen asked on Instagram is oh well I've got a strip 20 odd meters of it to go all the way that way all the way that way but actually no you don't if you if you line up the strings right then you don't have to and it's only occurred to me while I was up there on the roof doing it and um the question was asked how we going to get from one end to the other if you don't want to waste cable this is the way you want to do it start the string here in the middle go along and come back and then on the next string go along come down and come back on yourself cuz what that's going to mean is all your connections are here so we can bring our tray up there positive negative positive negative and that way we don't waste any cable and we're not doing any any unnecessary labor that fix has taken me about 2 minutes to do and it saved me a ton of cable and a ton of time on site so that's me being stupid hopefully you can learn from that mistake and uh I will too so yeah good little bit of experience all right so we're going to have a string starting here going along 10 panels and back 10 panels and then there going along the 10 panels and coming back 10 panels they'll all come back to a nice central location where we can run the tray out and po pop off the roof so we are ready now to start laying panels down and the sun hasn't set yet which is not bad considering we drove all the way up here and arrived this morning quite happy with the progress right so now all the panels are up here it is time to get the cable in for this string here we are going to be using Doncaster Cable's very own PV Ultra cable what do you think of it looks good so far yeah you like it neutral smelling not like ho7 it's not it's not my gloves no okay that's nice Min thing it's got the markings all the way down it which is nice danger DC cable live driven daylight yeah very very nice and the cables are double insulated within this as well so we don't actually have to worry about copex or anything so what we're going to do is we going do this half in PV Ultra and pop off the edge then we going do that half over there look at that Sunset glorious do that half over there the ordinary fashion with threading it inside of copex and popping off the edge just to kind of highlight the [Music] difference [Music] so what happened with your van the other day oh it was a nightmare oh look there's a fly on there that's come free all the way from shenzen we're just heading out of a Ninja Warrior that a little spicy droing you were you're a Ninja Warrior athlete oh this is upside down SP my children are that was another little drop in a woman loved you enough to have procreate well yep ring doorbell gave us a little alert 20 minutes after the incident like so there are on the monkey bars nasty little snake trying to break into my van he succeeded he got into your van well he got into the front front po those Central Lock in but because the previous thief in October broke the sliding door on the side of the van he thought it was still locked just didn't have the knp how ironic the the last Thief kind of Saved Me from the secured your van from this thief unable I follow this page called uh to stolen TOS UK or to theft UK I'll leave I'll try leave the link for it every single day it shows tool thev stilling most of them are in London like I'd say 90% of them whether or not it's they're just the most popular area of that Instagram C page or if that's where most of them are happening I don't know but it's shocking I'm going to set up a trap van with the money that I make from the channel which albe is not that much I am eventually going to buy like a knacked old van I'm going to make it absolutely unpleasant to break into and put some hollow shell Tools in there like multi tools with all the guts taken out of them like some air tags without the speaker or i' get prop little GPS tracker in there and basically bait some little scoundrel tow rag to come is going to get sprayed in fart spray glitter YMCA you name it it's going to go want to go full like Mark Rober on it full V jazzle but sadly that is going to take hex of a lot of time and money to do I've been robbed three times and I absolutely of course whatever I do is not going to make any difference whatsoever but I don't know I think everyone would appreciate to see it you know what I mean cuz they're just the worst of the worst I think toall Thieves for me it's another level of low cuz you're not stealing money you're stealing a man's means of providing for his family and making money anyway long long story short the only lead that we could get for the police the only leads that we could get for the police was the uh make model and registration number of the vehicle which was not enough for them to be bothered to and the picture of the guy's face picture of the guy's face yeah and a video of it happening they've closed it down and said that they have nothing to go by there's nothing to go by we've only got the registration number make model of the vehicle and a picture of the suspect's face that's it it's just not strong enough unless you C create to do a road traffic fence 33 mph or whatever uh they can't look you up on the dvla it's illegal for them to do that all right we're on the home straight now so we've only got 10 panels left to go in and you have this lovely 360 view so you see it's super easy all I'm doing is plugging these into the optimizers like so dropping it down carefully placing it down carefully placing it down then we tighten those up and we're good to go it's like that for the whole way along the string the whole way back those two panels there have left loose cuz we want to do is tidy up the cables behind there and that is where the connection points will be for the PV Ultra and for the ordinary array as well all right so we are done for the day we've got all of the panels on don't know how much of that you can actually see tomorrow we've got just the fun stuff all the AC stuff and also some lovely little bits of uh tray work probably a bit of galve conduit I wanted to pause for a second just to say thank you so much to kidus wholesale who have been absolutely tremendous with this cuz I was a bit silly and I forgot to get the Wi-Fi antenna and a couple of little bits for this job kidus boom on the phone it's already arrived I ordered that last night and it's already just arrived to site about an hour ago so if you haven't seen kadus yet already they're a wholesaler they're based in Devon but they cover the whole country what I'm going to do is I'm going to drop an account form below there's a link to It Go show them some love appreciate some small business don't give all of your money to the massive conglomerates and uh yeah see you tomorrow Ted that right there is our little team mascot Ted you have been extremely well behaved today come on boy Ted yeah all right sit good boy oh excuse me that doesn't look like sitting to me dog Cam that was my whole hand I'll be slobbered me go on a look at him loving life good morning let me introduce you big G this is lead doly Ms uh we've known each other for a little while and he is actually one of my mentors him and Oliver which is why I'm so bad at what I do today we're going to be doing the AC side of things so we've already got the power out to the isolator here so we're just coming out of a c16 in this distribution board then we're going to be coming out of that onto the gers we G clamp our way along it's always a bit messy in factories the key is like you've kind of got history through the ages of the electrical installs from like you've got a bit of the 60s a bit of mon Joanna everything but we're going to swing off poke out of that wall there cuz on the other side of this wall here you've got a 50 mil tray running down from the roof on the outside down to the inverter so we'll just do a little reverse stuffing land fire out and we'll also have some Unistrut this side going up just to clamp the Unistrut on the other side to mount the tray to should we get cracking yeah sounds good this cable here I actually picked up from outside here what they have is Drums of cable which are offcuts and the general public can buy them they're all the the what they kind of call the wholesaler rejects if it's a length that's too short for a wholesaler to be interested in you can actually log on to donc the ca's website and buy the offcut lengths for a little bit cheaper so quite a handy little thing there a it very good you going to try and snake it along snake it along first try and snake it along first obviously that saves a trip go obviously I didn't go hard at all kind of like playing snooker with a PO noodle oh I can see it yeah keep pushing n it's not happening it's tipped off the edge you didn't have the techers so you going to let the sh guy poke it up here I I can go there if you want to come here is there a step up there well no but there's a still beam the only thing is it's quite weak I don't if that will actually you want to test first see if it would take yeah it's good all right I'll poke you got it not yet yeah I've got it now it's just these are super rods and they are great it's not sponsored but this little sock attachment they do you get them on like industrial cable PS big heavy duty ones this is just a tiny little one works great yeah go for it mate yeah got it got it nice okay yeah more no I reckon that's good okay so the cable is in ready to be wired into the isolator but I don't really want to wire in until we've got the other end done so what we're going to do is we're going to poke the hole out get all of the cable tray in and then we'll come back and wire the end last all right so we are outside now so what we got to do is cut the tray so we have some 75 mil tray and that is shooting down that wall and Oliver is about to cut that why on Earth have you got a pickaxe in your van like a little baby deck collector that's a fulls size pickaxe mate it's like where's Snow White that's so funny I feel like Northerners really do just yearn for the mines that no that is brilliant for Earth rods you're not meant to dig an earth Rod out you meant to hammer it in you know no the Earth pit bit what so you're telling me you dig a 2 m hole the P nice little p place the rod and then back fill the 2 m hole around it no we pit it out but it looks neater okay sick why those guys are cutting down all the metal I'm going to get the cable out so oh let me show you this I absolutely hate that this is a thing that I have to do right van theft in my area is becoming more and more of a problem so as we mentioned yesterday with all I'm I've got plans and this video that I'm planning is going to be absolutely epic I'm planning it with Oliver from Chile it's going to be something else and this van is going to be horrible to break into but what I've been having to do in the meantime is take everything out at night so everything in my van is on pack out because the thing is my van is recognizable now I hate to say it and it sounds arrogant but some people will recognize that and think ah there's stuff to Nick I've got speakerless Apple Air tags inside of things all of my tools are tracked and then at night time I just take everything out but anyway I digress I need to drill the hole out what I'm thinking is a couple of 32 mil stuffing glands with some gaskets like this on the other side if you like the way this is organized so do I come over you can get these pouches at a minute I'm going to leave a link for them below with 25% off with my code so you'll get 25% off of these pouches and they are absolutely tremendous quality you can use them for storing anything but what I generally keep them for is I sort of have one for like Spade beer one for whole saws and all that so right that that that let's go all right so the plan is I'm going to run a copex out there now I was thinking of just doing a stuffing land but see as is installated it just feels a bit janky just to ram a cable through there so there we go always make sure when you drilling through insulation you use someone else's holes saw cuz it will wreck it it will make it really dirty and messy you just want to clean that up I see daylight so I'm tried to go slightly downhill there reason being is uh don't water to track up if we can help it even though the cable is going down what we'll do is we'll do the St method silicon the heck out of it method Works CH every time 10 out of [Music] 10 another little special so I I I personally genuinely believe little should be sponsoring us at this point because the amount of tools and promotion they get for free this is the sore angle guide I went in there for a salted pretzel and we did come out with a sore angle guide what did you make of it um I'm not sure about its accuracy how can you not be sure about it accuracy it's adjustable surely you can adjust it but it's fairly important that this is accurate right yeah so we need to prove that do we not I'll let you prove that test it against your tray to see if it's accurate or not all right oh no out that angle finder is rubbish that is a rubbish angle finder right so we're mounting the inverter but we're going to use these big old bolts because I'm not really happy hanging such a heavy inverter as that on Brown plugs so we've had to widen these out to make room for these bolts to go through however if if you're going to widen out metal like that you want to try and touch it up with paint afterwards so this is a proper gloss paint just to maintain the Integrity of inside of here so you could file it down say for a gland plate or whatever for an SWA gland attach it all and then just paint around where you've been so there's no gaps in the paint work all right so Ollie and G are just up there fitting the unist strap ready for the tray what I'm going to do is start getting the solar strings down so I'm aware that it's not a requirement to have solar inside inside of another layer of conduit however it feels really gashed to run strings of solar DC cable just bare on tray so where I can I quite like to run it inside of something ah it's not long enough oh no I'll have to do it with the [Music] Hoover you got a little twist there pull little twist out you got to really let help the string in yeah that's it there we go got him take that bit first maybe so there's no Kink I've got this made up this here is a little pre-made waterfall to go off the edge the way you make that basically a series of crimps and a series of cuts along the edge Oliver has done that he's made quite a work of art of it where would you like your waterfall sir there you go bit lower bit lower yeah yeah probably about there yeah you've already marked it yeah you're happy with it yeah hav marked it yet sick all right so we're up on the roof now we've got the cables ready to go so this is the finished array I didn't actually show you this yesterday but that is it there those panels there that are loose are ready to come up to connect onto to crimp the mc4 plugs onto but the strings go a long zip tide pop down there and they're going to be mounted onto these trays we've just got that there to Mark the height Happy Days what' you reckon George yeah it's looking good in it there now how would this how would you rate this project so far out of 10 yeah about 9 and 3/4 9 and 3/4 really Oliver's here here full 10 Oliver now is doing the last little bits of getting all the cables up onto the roof that means I'm going to go do the DC connections and I'll show you how to properly do an mc4 connector tell us your joke that you had earlier what do you call a judge with no thumbs what' you call a judge with no thumbs I don't know just this finger okay now it's time to strip this cable so I'd like to apologize for the audio issues in today's episode bit of a technical error there so I've got the PB Ultra stripper pop that on there and then just score it round score it around slide it off and that comes off a treat it's so ridic ully easy to strip so I'll show you how to properly make off this non-caster cable so you have to use the proper boot that's made for it slide that down and on and once that's in place and ready we just heat shrink it all right so that boot is on it took absolutely ages to heat shrink because it is freezing cold and the wind is blowing all the heat away from my heat gun so now it's time to strip these a little tip that was actually taught to me by this guy right here who I imagine was probably talk to him by George if you strip it just that little bit and then cut it what it does is it saves all the ends from all spaying out and being messy see how much tidier and nicer that is I love that it's colorcoded as well now it's time to plug it in cables are fired over that edge now so they've just got to come down in a tray we're can to do a lovely little set on the wall there swing down swing across and straight into that inverter easy easy there's the great debate are Roofing bolts bolts or are they screws Oliver sits on the side of the fence that would like to call them bolts I personally believe that if you follow the line of logic you're tighten it up with a screwdriver not a nut driver so therefore it is a screw would you like to argue with that well I don't think the device by which you're tightening it is what defines what it is are you trying to make it bolt fluid I think it is fluid when this was at the form of metalore the function we give it decides what it is right okay now I've been to the school of Cory I feel more confident about you're welcome the label I put on my fixings some people would say that we should have bought 100 Mil tray well some people would be absolutely right like a glove like a foot on a glove all right so it's time to test the strings so what I'm expecting should be 20 volts per string so there we go so have 20 volts DC so let's test the other string just make sure that one's happy 20 volts awesome stuff that means that when we commission I'm not going to be worrying about any panels being missing or any optimizers missing because all of them are showing up on here they all should register with the system you know that's saying if you love what you do you never work a day in your life I love what I do but I feel like I've I've worked quite a lot in my life yeah I thought that I love what I do but just work a light without saying it's a complete utter bareface lie made up by the miners the owners of the M miners you know sometimes when you're doing your own jobs simple silly little thoughtless mistakes can really cost you a lot of time now this sounds like the perfect segue into an ad bit it's not the advert is news flash I've been really dumb again this is like the worst CV ever I feel like if I ever decide to go employed again no one's going to want to hire me cuz they would have seen all these videos so yesterday I thought I'd do a good deed and tidy up sight gathered up all of the plastic I've only gone and thrown away all of our mc4 connectors so it just means that this morning we have another beautiful day in the sunshine to go buy some connectors and get this system finished it's just all for the best isn't it all right so I'm back and we're ready to do our finish and touches this is a lovely gel filled heat shrink double boot I think it's like a 4:1 ratio cuz it's massive but it shrinks right down okay so one of the requirements in the UK is that any DC cabling from solar has to be labeled basically to tell people that you have live DC cables there it tells people prove dead when you're ready to Pro dead however this right here is another fantastic feature of the Doncaster cables because now I've got to go along and cable tie this copex at intervals all the way up this cable here has already got it printed on all the way along all the way up all the way back yet another little Time Saver let me tell you something as a YouTube channel owner right you'll get sponsors come out of the Woodworks you probably see I would estimate 10% of those sponsors and the reason is I'm very very selective now Doncaster cables have sponsored my channel for a while now in fact I believe they sponsored it near enough from day one I already respected them before for a long time before I started um YouTube I was already using their products looking at something like this it's a very small simple thing but for me as an installer trying to level up trying to be a level above the competition essentially all the time having colorcoded strings is just such a nice touch I mean that on its own is a nice touch but it coming inside a protected jacket that's been labeled up and all the rest of it the amount of time it saves I am a huge fan of it let me show you how to properly do an mc4 connector okay so you see you've got two sizes one skinnier one fatter and they're going to slot into each other fat connector to male skinny connector to female Right strip the cable back just enough to go over like that so I'm just going to bite it on like so pop that in there crimp make sure it's tight give it the old pull test slide it in until it clicks there you have it it is literally as easy as that so for the m one it's exactly the same you just get the slightly fatter pin pop it in there like so slip the cable in get a nice tight crimp give it the pull test give it the wiggle test and you loosen up your M mc4 slide it in until it clicks right now all we have to do is heat shrinky [Music] shrinky tell you that Airbnb was so disgusting this Airbnb we stay last night we get there there's no heating which all right fair play I do believe that the north does have Heating and electricity now I've actually lived here for a little while for a few years you know I know that's a myth but come on man it's not helping it if you arrive to an Airbnb and there's no heating I end up going on Instagram live trying to pull up Solutions the system was empty and the filling Loop wasn't working the pressure gauge wasn't working so anyway I had no heating it's dirty my eyes today are like full of Gunk this is not good I've caught Hep a to c plus Z from that place so I've labeled up I like to just put a little warning sticker rather than just the label where I can just to tell people what it is same as on here for them to be able to open this isolator to test it they'll have to cut that sticker which says make sure that the AC and the DC is isolated before you start work let's go commission all right so I've finished all my testing commissioning now is just rolling away so I'm just waiting for all the optimizers to Ping up but already even in this weather we're doing a few kilowatts which is absolutely awesome um I just wanted to say it's been such a privilege working here because I feel whenever I see proper British Innovation and then British manufacturing I want to get my hands on it and support it I hope I don't come across too salesy in this approach but genuinely if you can get your hands on it even if you can just order 5 m of it get your hands on this cable and try it because it's brilliant and it's made in that factory right there which I feel can't often be said for stuff it looked brilliant and it's what I'm going to be specking now on as many jobs as I possibly can because it's saving a ton of time compared to that it looks far far neater and it's a lot safer and rated to better voltages and things so it's what I've be using but anyway that is the install done 40 panels on the roof 12 1/2 KW three phase of solar thank you for watching see you
