[Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] hey guys dustin here welcome back to the farm we are combining wheat still we are eight miles north of the yard it is our furthest fields away there is a whole section of wheat up here so that means it is four quarters altogether but it's not a full section because there are lots of trees and bushes and shrubs and hills all to go around but it is beautiful country up here a lot of nature a lot of wildlife a lot of scenery there's moose there's deers there's raccoons there's coyotes just going up a hill as well boars haven't seen some wild boars in a few years but they're up here we've seen them great snowmobiling area a lot of hills a lot of snow sift in here in the trees beautiful country up here this field's not exactly flat and straight like some of our others always some obstacle around the corner this channel here the sprayer won't fit through so i have to fold in the tips of the sprayer and go through here twice you make an extra track but that's the only way to get in here there's my friend jackson number one demon in the league don't go in front of our net unless you want your ankles chopped off damn beavers the weeds bush living close to 70 so that's a lot of weight to haul all the way home so we've set up another grain bag up here so we're gonna have two or three bags up here that we're gonna have to haul home eventually that hill is a pretty good climb in the snowmobile nice area in here we're in saskatchewan we take the hills we can get so right here is actually a dirt road right here and the bank goes like this and then up so that bank on the other side there is like eight feet high already and then the snow drifts up there to make it even higher and then you hit it with a snowmobile and you usually get stuck but it's pretty fun so since this field is pretty much a maze we just have names for different places in the fields so we can describe where we are this is the channel the north middle bush the wiener roast place the east middle bush the snow bank the small middle bush the toilet bowl the southeast slew the slew where i got the grain cart stuck 10 years ago the slew let the beavers chewed out the snowmobile trail in the middle bush jackson's barn where he keeps all his money i'm just on the west side of the southeast bush then i'll turn around and unload east we are combining hard red spring wheat with these s690 combines which has over 500 horsepower and a 400 bushel tank holding capacity although this s690 combine is an absolute beast the task in which it is performing separating the wheat seeds from the chaff or unwanted material is quite simple so we entering the combine is threshed by a rotor this is a single rotary combine it's threshed by the rotor which is basically a giant cylinder that spins at a very high speed and starts the separating process the heavy grain falls down and there are various screens and filters called the chaffer and the shoe which screen out the unwanted material called chaff like leaves and stems then the wheat falls to the bottom and it's carried out by the elevator then ends up in our tank that's what's called our sample and we want our sample pretty clean but sometimes some chaff ends up in our hopper and that's okay but if our sample is too dirty that means we have too much chaff in the hopper and that is called dockage and so we will get docked at the terminal for too much chaff when we go to sell it but if our sample is too clean and there's no chaff in there that means that some wheat is getting kicked out the back of the combine and we don't want that so what we want to do is maximize our yields having as much wheat as we can in our hopper with very little chaff and not kick out any wheat out of the back of the combat and that's basically all there is to it i think you're ready to take over [Music] super delivery it's what we got to make my potatoes into a volcano volcano [Music] only way to eat your mashed potatoes is if you make a gravy volcano and my brother always do this and i don't know why even while you're combining i have to do it or else i can't eat it i'm basically like a very large overgrown child we're running two combines and each combine has a 40 foot macdon header so quick math that's 80 feet altogether which keeps these combines right full of wheat making them work hard and it maximizes the capabilities of each machine so these headers are what are called macdon flex headers so there's two pivot points on the header and the header actually flexes as it's following the ground so the so these little white indicators indicate how the header is flexing it's pretty flat right here but i'll try to get to a little hill and the header will flex so there's two pivot points on either side of the feeder house the feeder house is in the middle that's what feeds the crop into the combine so that's where the pivot points are so the wings on either side of the header will actually flex up or down depending on the variation of the lab to make a more even cut of the crop so once you get into a header that's this big which is 40 feet people that are smarter than me figured out that if you're on a bit of a side hill one side of the header will be cutting the crop and the other side will be in the air so if this side that's in the air now flexes down it'll cut it'll cut all the crop evenly so i'm in a little bit of a valley here see that indicator is starting to pop up so my wings are lifting so it'll follow the ground better if this was a rigid header and my wings weren't lifting up the very tips would be digging into the ground so these flex headers are really good for cutting pulse crops like peas and lentils because the pulse crops are really short so you pretty much have to shave the ground so these headers follow the ground really well but even if you're cutting off the ground like we are now cutting this wheat the headers still follow the ground so they're even extremely useful for cutting cereals off the ground i am flashing i'm almost full it's getting dark out we gotta fill this bag yet tonight and put another one on so i'm gonna do that i gotta get back to this west end fill up this bag and go from there so i will see you guys next time you
