hey everyone this is tony teaches tech i'm tony and in this video i'm going to do some testing to see how good the cloudways cdn is and if you're not even familiar with what a cdn is this is the video for you because i'm going to explain all of that along the way so let's get right on into it and right here i have a cloud way server at this ip address in london it's ending in two to five so keep that in mind and on the server i have a couple applications one of them is a cdn demo and that is actually this website right here what i want to do is start with some benchmarks so if we go into uh view developer developer tools um we can over in the network tab with cash disabled we can just refresh the page and kind of see where all of these assets are coming so we got pictures we got javascript we got html css all of these you can see here on the right hand side and these are all coming directly from the ip address that we talked about ending in two to five so at this point the cdn is obviously not implemented because we would expect to see them coming from a different ip address somewhere around the world so let's do a faster slow test for this website so i'm just going to copy the url here and paste it and this is going to do just that it's going to test from different servers around the world and each one of those servers like in australia japan wherever the servers are they're going to have to go back to london which is where that that server is where this website is located and get that information and london's gonna have to send it back to whoever requested it so let's see how this performs without a cdn and it does pretty well all things considered right we are seeing uh let's go down here just a little bit more um because like i said this is a london server so we're seeing the fastest response times for this website in england ireland similarly that's also in europe germany very close by but when you get to places like south africa or india you're starting to see a larger time for the webpage to become interactive and then very very far away is uh south korea japan and singapore and australia so the the idea here is to take with a cdn okay to take our assets our basically our images and some of our javascript and css files and kind of put them on servers around the world so if you are in australia for example then you're gonna get instead of going all the way to london well you're gonna you're still gonna have to ask london for the web page but to get some of those assets like the images css files javascript files um we can actually get them from a server in australia instead of downloading them from london so let's go ahead and implement that and it's actually a really easy thing to do in cloudways so if i click on my application for the server which is the i called it cdn um demo we can come down here to cloudways cdn and type in the url of our website so i think i still have that on the clipboard and i do let me just see that yes i wanted the full url with https and i'm going to be clicking on create to configure that cdn for my application and i'm not sure this this part might take a bit especially if you have a bigger website with a lot of assets because what's going to have to happen here is all of your assets need to be copied to each one of those servers around the world and it actually took pretty quick because this is a small small website so let's see here we have our website url the cdn url okay and we have the ability to purge that clear it out and refresh it with this button here and what does this say application integration with a single click you can easily integrate cloud wave cdns so uh let's go ahead and apply that and it's activating the cdn for our url so i think after this then we should be able to do another test okay we'll do a local test um like we did in chrome dev tools and we'll do a fast or slow test dude so cdn is successfully integrated with your application all right let's go back to our page here and remember we're seeing all these assets being served directly from the server let's see if our cdn is in place right now and it looks like either because of caching issues or something else that's not the case so what i'm going to do is i'm going to get out i'm going to copy the url again i'm going to get out of this uh this guess window and it actually didn't get out of the guest window and open up a new guest window to see if that helps so i'm going to open this go to view developer developer tools and refresh the page and we are still seeing those assets served from the remote ip address so my guess here is that the uh the assets have not propagated around to all those cdn servers so i'm gonna pause the video and when that happens we'll resume all right guys i'm back and all the resources have propagated to the cdn server locations around the world and i did run the faster slow test a couple times since pausing the video and i'm actually shocked at the results here so let me just prove that the cdn is working so i'll refresh the page here and you'll see that some of these resources you know css files javascript files images are being served from another address other than the 255 right so we have 31 the one i p address ending in 31 giving us all of these assets the only thing that we're getting from two to five uh is the the page itself a font and what is this javascript some image i'm not sure what images is and the fav icon so the majority of the resources are coming from the cdn server that's closest to me right now and instead of going you know to london so um that's my validation that the studio is working but surprise surprise if we go back to fast or slow test you'll see that it did run these tests yet again and this this one was just a hiccup right this is this is the first test we ran where we saw at the beginning of the video and then i ran these other ones um but if we come down here to the world global locations you'll see uh that you know we're still doing good in europe right but what the heck happened like now we're well above two seconds for australia and south korea um we were looking at something below 1700 milliseconds right 1.7 seconds for these locations so we actually saw an increase in time for the web page to be fully loaded when we implemented this cdn with cloudways now there's a lot of variables here right we're just using a simple basic wordpress website not too much going on so maybe that has something to do with it the fact that the cdn is actually adding additional overhead you wouldn't think that's the case but that's that's what we're seeing i mean the the numbers won't lie here um and while i'm talking i'll just run one more test just uh just so that we're all on the same page and um the i guess the other thing i'm gonna say is like i i can't make a blanket statement here and say that the cdn actually makes your website slower for all websites right this is just um this is just one example here that we're using and i'm sure there are cases where this would make your website faster in here let's just look at the the results here and again yeah we're seeing very similar results above right around two seconds for these slowest locations so the one the couple other things i wanted to say is like in general when you are using a cd and you want to uh because you are paying for the the data and let me show you that it was somewhere in here i think it i can't find it right now but it was like a dollar for every 25 gigabytes of data that the cdn sends over the network so if you have a lot of traffic this could add up to a lot of money right that you're paying every month in addition to your hosting so the idea would be to compress your images make them as small as possible to save even further on that data being sent over the network and just to save money as well so that's one thing and the other thing i wanted to say is i have recently switched to another web hosting provider for some of my websites called wpx hosting and it is one of the only and you know there's probably more but one of the only websites that are web hosting companies that i've heard about that actually have cdn included so i'm very happy with that and if you want to learn more about that i'll have some videos linked over here as well as how to your images so thank you guys for watching please give it a thumbs up let me know if you have any comments below questions and i'll see you in the next video you
