a point cloud that comes from structure from motion processing has got information about color that is applied to each of the point of the point cloud but also a point cloud that comes from laser scanning has got information about colors if the laser scanning as somehow being linked to a camera on the field that shot RGB pictures so color is a really important information on inside the dense point cloud other the three-dimensional information in this video I'd like to show you how to deal with colors inside cloud compare and I'd like to show you how to manage colors in order to delete colors change colors or change the colors of the point cloud in relationship with the information that is carried inside the point cloud itself so this is a point cloud a piece of a point cloud that has been made from there has been processed from structure from motion processing so pictures has been have been processed and they were able to give information about colors to the points of the point cloud so if you'd like to change colors if you'd like to deal with colors you have to go here edit and there's the menu colors but unless you click on the point cloud here in the DB tree you won't be able to change colors in any way so once you have clicked there's this these tools are now available but let me say that if you deal with colors inside cloud compare you are you are starting a destructive process so each of this tool that I'm gonna show you in this video will change the colors of the point cloud and in case if you do not know I'm gonna tell you inside cloud compare there's no undo option so I strongly suggest you to make a copy clone your dance cloud clone your point cloud before applying any editing in terms of colors so just click on the point cloud and just click on this tool clone the selected act entities and I'm gonna I'm gonna copied it for several times because I'd like to do a couple of editing with the various options that you got available here in the Edit tools just make all this point cloud invisible and just make the first one of this path visible I'm gonna keep the original point cloud safe I'm not gonna edit that so the very first tool that I'd like to show you it's extremely simple actually extremely rude and it's clear the colors have gone each color for each of the points of the point cloud has been deleted this way I think that you won't be able to recognize the point cloud that I've just shown you before but the three-dimensional information is capped so if I rotate the point cloud I can be I can definitely see the the three-dimensional point cloud and if i zoom in I think that I got points that are too big if i zoom in I can see the details of this rocky wall but of course that's not easy to understand what we are working on without colors information this is the kind of point cloud that you may have in output after a laser scanning without any relationship with between weird a camera that can apply colors information to the point cloud so that is this is the clear tool then there's another tool which is let's go colors color right no set unique so if you select set unique you have you need to select a color so what you are doing now is taking this and cloud and applying to each point of the point cloud the same color you have the chance to select it by clicking on one of these basic colors click in here wherever you want modifying the you saturation value here the red green and blue channels you also have the chance to input to type in the HTML code for the color or you can pick screen colors so you can move whatever you want in the screen even here and just pick a color that you'd like to apply to the points of the point cloud I'll just click here once you've selected click OK and what happens is that each point of the point cloud now as this new color which you have just selected it's quite similar to clear but with clear you don't have the chance to select the color with the set unique you have the chance to sects to select the color that you'd like to apply to the points let me go back to set unique and let me choose this red color I did it because I'd like to show you now another tools that is not set unique but is colorized colorize and I'm gonna pick this red color that I've just that I've just picked with the set unique colorized it will do a quite similar but different thing it will maintain the intensity and the luminosity of the the points but it will apply a kind of a color filter so if I click OK here you can see that I've choose red and it applied a color filter a red filter to all the point cloud all the points of the point cloud but it kept the luminosity so you are still able to see clearer clearer the 3d information the model that you are just working on instead if I make the read set unique color editing process visible you can see that I'm able to see what I'm working so this is the main difference between set unique and colorize so let's go and keep going with another tool which is levels note I've already talked about levels because it's a little bit tricky and I dedicated a whole video about levels and the options that you have in terms of color grading a point cloud so I'm gonna jump to convert to grayscale but well it's quite yeah it's quite easy it's kind of the saturation of the point cloud I beg your pardon about the the choice of this point cloud because this point cloud has got a lot of grey so it's a rocky wall so that this stone is mainly gray so if you'd like to see what happens you just have to focus on this area which there's some green and some brown and some yellow so I've got the original dense cloud active and visible and make it invisible so you can see what happened when I launched the convert to grey so basically the saturation has gone not the luminosity but the saturation there's an option so let's make this visible and edit colors then there's the convert to scatter field option this is nice this is nice because we are gonna tell the software to generate a scalar field so far I'm gonna step back to the maybe to this this point cloud so far what happened is that we have worked on the RGB information if we go here cloud compare object in the properties panel we can see that the the view we are this what we are viewing what the software is is displaying to us is the RGB information we are not in this color field actually there's no scholar field now so this is the RGB information and this is the information about the colors of each of the point cloud with this option with this tool which is convert to scalar field now we are taking information about the red green and blue channel and we are converting we are generating the software is gonna generate a scalar field let's do that you got the option to select one two three or four or the four of these options you're gonna select in this case you're gonna generate four different scalar fields each of these color field has got information about a single channel so you're gonna generate a red channel scalar field a green channel a blue channel scalar field each of this color field will generate a point which where the information a new point cloud where the information for each point in terms of scalar field will go from 0 to 255 because when you mix up red green and blue you can mix up up to 255 parts of color each of this channel goes from 0 to 255 you if you click here and if you have the software generate the composites color field information about colors you will have an average value for for the new information about the color for the new scalar field sorry about that if the software will take the art the red amount of the red amount of color the green amount and the blue amount and I'm gonna divide by 3 to make an average so click OK and now the display have changed has changed from RGB I can always go back to RGB but now there's a new display option here which is scholar field and now to see what you are seeing what you are this what you are just looking at in terms of displaying option you have to go here and select which of this new color field that has been created you'd like to see in this case you have a count count of because we have the red green blue and composites color field now you have active the composites color field but you can move to rad you can move to green and you can move to blue color field information and let's go back for for instance to red and of course now this is a scholar field and you can have the visible information here about what you're just this point you're just seen in terms of amount or level of colors in turn this case is red is going from 0 to 255 in this case you're just selecting you have to do to read this point cloud to watch to see at this point cloud in terms of colors so in this area the points of the point cloud as God have got a much more amount of red rather than the point of this area which is basically the water I think yes this is so this is water a sea level and you can do that by switching from red to green and to blue so this is information in terms of scalar field what I'd like to show you in the end of this video is what actually what happens in the point cloud when you deals with colors so I'm gonna zoom in this area I'm gonna increase the point sides and I'm gonna keep active yes the red one and well the very red one and or maybe the hate ramp I think that I didn't didn't talk about the heat ramp oh I didn't talk about the rain heat ramp so let's miss the back wall so sorry about that heat ramp is so interesting didn't talk about that so let me go back let's use this point cloud and let's see what happens when you choose the hate ramp us I'm sorry so edit colors hate ramp and that's between levels and convert to grayscale hate ramp is it's really nice because it's gonna color the point cloud in terms of information about one of the three coordinates of each point you can choose Z coordinates so the altitude the x coordinate or the y coordinate by default hate ramp this is no default I'm sorry I've just recorded another video in Italian before and I change this there were but there's no problem by default you so let's go lets me go back to the default options that I think that you're gonna end up so this is the the default options that you have once you launch the hate-filled options by default you have the default color ramp and the direction which is Z so let me click OK and you can see that the the point cloud has been colored use the information about the Z coordinate so the elevation each point or the point cloud let me decrease the the size of the point each coordinates define the color each that coordinate of the point define the colors of the point of in this new point cloud if you are somehow familiar with digital elevation model if you use GIS software you may you may know this kind of visual displaying options which better define immediately define the highest point of the of the point cloud and the lowest one but you have the options to modify as you want so you can go to custom and you can change the palette starting from the lowest color and going up to the highest one and in the new point cloud is now colored in a different way so you can choose the two colors that you like the most that you think they are much more representative for that point cloud or much more useful for your work let's go to colors and go back hey you can use abandon options actually I I do not see any real usage for this coloring in the surveying and topographic field but that's an option and you have the options to change the coordinate and define a new coordinate for the new colors of the point cloud so hey let's go back to default and let's change the direction so I'm not gonna coloring the point cloud in the Z direction but I'm gonna gonna coloring it in the X direction so if I click OK you can see that the the color change from red adage that is from blue that is in this in this area to red that is in this air of course it's I think that's a little bit trickier to read this kind of color if you change the coordinates in from Z to X or to Y but there's an options you can move the point cloud in order to to make the the main direction of this point cloud parallel to the export white axis and it may be an options to have the point cloud color this way so now that I have lets me keep this active now that I have talked about also the hate ramp let me do one last one last thing which is measuring colors of the point of the point cloud in the original one and measuring the same colors the colors of the same point more or less in a colored point cloud so how can I do that I can use the point peaking to just click here and there's a label which tells me which is which are the colors at this point I'm gonna save this label and I'm gonna keep here so I'm gonna close it I'm gonna make this I think that I I did a mistake because this label was really was related and linked to this point cloud which is which is the color one I'm gonna select this point cloud okay select this point cloud which is the original one I'm gonna pick the color and this hard information no it was right it was about this point cloud I save it now I'm gonna select this point cloud I'm gonna pick again in the same point there's a new label which basically is the same so I did a mistake so let me step step back because there's something that that's not working so well so let me take for instance another point cloud let me take the Y point cloud no the red point cloud okay let let me do it again sorry about that so let's point picking and select this one okay I'm selected the red one I don't know why so deselect this one I'm gonna select this one okay this is the right color I need to deselect everything and this is the color of this point 70 119 123 for the red green and blue Channel and gonna click save and keep the label aside then I'm gonna I'm gonna make the red one visible I'm gonna click again in this area I hope more or less at the same point I'm gonna save this label again now I got two labels here and you can see that more or less is the same point but you have two different information about colors in this case which is the in this case which is the original cloud you got red green and blue information in this other case you got another information which is basically 100% red and little green and zero blue so this it's really important because what we have done with this point cloud is changing the colors so we we actually modified the colors of the the points of the cloud so if you if you'd like to save this point cloud this red point cloud in output and you'd like to give it to someone else that it's gonna work on that point cloud keep in mind that you're gonna save the new color that you have modified you're not giving out the original color and the modified one this in this case these two had modified the colors the the original colors of the point out and that's why and that's because and that's why I strongly suggested you to make a copy of the point cloud before doing all this stuff because the color have changed I hope that this video was useful feel free to share feel free to connect with me at www.mathantics.com thank you so much for watching and gonna see you in the next video ciao
