[Music] foreign [Music] [Music] welcome back it's renovation season already I don't know how that is possible but things have just been moving along so fast this year and I just finished mowing this section out here this was that spring seed of rye grass that I did and I'm looking at it just really trying to make a decision right now because there's a lot of weeds in it but there's also a lot of things that showed up that had I done a proper removal of what was there before in the last fall and made sure that everything that came up got sprayed again then usually you're not going to have to deal with these long-term problems but right now I'm trying to make a decision because spring seating that's what happens sometimes is you're trying to get the grass to survive the summer on that spring seed but you also didn't get the proper removal of what was there and so sometimes you end up with a bunch of stuff coming into it and you have to make a decision as to what you want to do about that and that's kind of where I'm at right now I really don't want to have to remove what's here because it does look fairly decent for being only three four months old but I don't know I got to make a decision here on this so we'll figure that out there's stuff like this that you can these pretty much can be all hand pulled if you had to but there's stuff like this throughout this is that rough type of grass that's up you know here along all this section that's still in here these are not really easy to remove and you usually can't get all the root system out so that's what I'm trying to decide if I just spot spray a few areas and reseed those or what I'm gonna do then this over here just didn't get enough water and it's up on the top of this Ridge so all of it starts to run this way anyway everything down here you can see looks fairly decent but up here just didn't get enough water so that'll have to have some more seed in there the other thing that I did last week in preparation for all the seating projects that I have going on if you wanted to see what I'm planning for the season I just did a video on that recently so check that out but I did get my friend sprayer out here he's got uh John Deere with a big 40 gallon sprayer on the back of it so I did get that out here and I spent the better part of a day spraying out the areas that I needed to you can see behind me here everything's really starting to turn and look good in terms of that initial spray so we'll see if I missed some spots I can always hand fix those with a sprayer and we'll see if I need to do another blanket or not but hopefully I can just take care of anything that I missed anything that comes up just kind of as a spot spray and I'll be able to come in here and get some seed going in this and maybe a couple weeks so this rye grass section over here is still recovering from the scalp that I did but it's getting better and actually I left it for the weekend and haven't really had any water on it in our hottest period which was got to 113 for the heat index this weekend so this is obviously out in full sun and coming and checking it out today it doesn't honestly look that bad so that's good probably going to get a quick mow on this and get some water on it yet at some point today but the recovery is looking pretty good [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] so Kelsey's out here graciously trying to help me clean up all these weeds that have long been allowed to grow too much in between these plots but we're working on that it's going to get all this stuff cleaned up so that I can get some weed fabric down in between those and probably put some wood chips on we're still trying to decide on that too but using the ventrac now to clean up some of this stuff so I don't have to do it all by hand and try to put it in some sort of dump cart or something I can just use the bucket [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] got a lot done yesterday in terms of cleaning up all these plots they look so much better and got one row left right here of a whole bunch of weed so again you can see how bad it was looking before we started doing this process but I'm gonna finish cleaning up those weeds real quick in that one get those moved out of the way going to try to figure out the measurements for the rest of my plots that are going in make sure I have it all planned out and then there's a couple other areas that I'm going to need to spray to get prepared for more seed but the main priority today is try to get this weed fabric down in here and probably going to have to put a mulch on it or something I bought the stuff that that you really need to cover up you can get some of the stuff that they use at greenhouses and things like that that you could probably leave out in the sun but they didn't really have the right size for that where I went and it's really expensive too also for those of you wondering if those straw blankets ever The netting in there ever actually breaks down well here it is this is about a year old here still looks really intact to me so that's usually why I take them out as soon as I start to see good germination [Music] things do not like to be picked up very easily a lot of root structure in those things how big they were [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] this is a really good example of why pre-emergents are important and the reason that I didn't put any down this year on this section is because it was just seated late last fall some of the areas specifically the Bluegrass were definitely not ready for pre-emergent this spring and the rest of them I just wanted to get as mature as possible but you can see just how invasive crabgrass and foxtail will become a lot of root system there and they just go crazy especially when I've been irrigating this section so next year I will get pre-emergent on all this stuff but that's the good example here of why that's important and how it can really take over if you have a thin lawn and you allow this stuff to just go crazy also right here is a good example of Bluegrass spreading and for those of you who wonder how that happens there's rhizomes that go out from the plant underneath the ground and they shoot up another plant and then this will start to obviously tiller and put a bunch more leaves on it but you can see just how far that one is away so once it starts to grow and mature you're going to have this whole area filled in [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] all right well at least that part of the job is done but there's a lot more to do in order to get all this fabric down and to try to make these plots probably look a little more cleaned up I don't have an edger I think that can go through some of these sections so more work to do on these but I want to go measure out the area over there so I understand how much room I have and what I'm going to plant and I'll tell you all about that so I have my Kentucky 31 here and then right next to it is some of the improved Elite Turf type tall fescue so I'm going to leave this right here I think I'm not going to put a buffer in between those because I like them side by side so you can easily see the differences as and I start treating this better than I have been to put some fertilizer on it and water and all that stuff yeah I was gonna keep a five foot plot width-wise of the elite Fescue and then pretty much right where you can see where I drove the ventrac and see how much space that is yeah I should be able to do a four foot path in between there so right where these tracks are right here I will do four feet I'm gonna Mark that off real quick [Applause] it's the same exact thing over here I got this marked off already but this should be five feet foreign that's five feet and then I want should be to nine looks like down there at that stake it's about five feet from the driveway to the edge of that stake so I marked out five feet here this is just gonna be a buffer zone that I'll keep this grass in here and eventually if I decide it would look better with wood chips or something I can have this area in between here but I'm going to do wood chips on the driveway section there on the back and then I think I'm going to leave this buffer zone a Fescue and then we get into the plots right here so I need to figure out how much room I have and how many plots I want to do this is going to be the real mowing plot section so it looks like to me where I got that marked off where the first real mode plot will start I've got 22 feet over to this area that I marked off so basically where I'm standing right now I've got 40 feet of length and 22 feet across of grass that's here that I can just make into whatever real mode plots that I want so I need to figure out how many I'm going to do for sure I'm going to do the grass type so Kentucky Bluegrass tall fescue probably fine Fescue and then of course perennial rye so there's at least four I just need to make sure I have everything figured out in case I want anything else to test in here as far as real mowing goes this is the Kentucky 31 over here I'm planning to do some buffalo grass I think I'm going to put that right next to it so that'll be there in this section right here that's all sprayed out I'm going to put in my other plots that I told you about in one of the last videos some micro Clover I'm going to do fine fescue in full sun at probably more of a normal height so not the real mode thing and then we'll do to probably some Clover mixed with a grass type I'm going to probably try that and then also maybe one more plot of Kentucky Bluegrass there's a new type that I want to test so I might put that over here or I might put that over in the other section on Beyond a whole bunch of other stuff going on over there but but that is over in this section out towards the front so of course there's the front of the property in the driveway with the electrical pole right there so this over here is going to be my warm season testing next year depending on what I decide to do with that and then also it's going to be my non-irrigated testing section so I'm going to probably plant up in this corner maybe four or five small plots of things and I'm going to water them of course to get them growing but then through the next summer I want to let them be and I want to see how well they do what they look like during mid-summer depending on what rain looks like and then how recovery happens in the fall time too because I know a lot of you are probably getting into situations now where you can't necessarily water or you don't want to water so I want to do some testing to show you what that would look like and then I'm also going to be testing a larger section of Bluegrass over here I think I'm going to do a mono stand that I have picked out just to test that and it's supposed to be one of the most drought tolerant ones so that should be interesting too since it's renovation season I decided I would also like to run a special on my renovation and overseeding guide so if you're doing a cool season project you want to know exactly what to do in one guide you don't have to go through a whole bunch of videos to try to figure out the whole process that is the guide to get I'm gonna run a special on that for only twenty dollars so if you want to grab that for renovation season that is on sale right now [Applause] [Music] foreign I think maybe actually just a string trimmer would work better in that situation because I don't want to dig in very far down into the soil I mean and some of these do need to get straighter in which I would need to dig part of that out but I the rest of these that I just want to put a nice Edge on the side I don't really want to dig in and it's hard to do that with this stick edger because in order to hold it steady you kind of need to hold it down with pressure and then that's going to want to go into this loose sandy soil pretty easily so I might need to just try a regular trimmer along there up on its Edge and try that in order to get just a clean cut plenty more work to do on these plots and of course my seating will be coming up I'll be taking you along for everything that I'm doing so stay tuned for that thanks so much for watching see you next time [Music]
