it's the daily dog hey all what's going on thanks for being with me for another edition of the daily doug i am happy that you're with us again today so uh it was a couple weeks ago actually two weeks ago today that i did my first ever video uh reacting to a song by guitarist ingva malmsteen um he's unique to me i haven't heard another person play like him uh in his specific style and um the the first song that we did was supposed to be the uh his icarus sweet opus 4 and we got the the wrong piece somehow so we did a follow-up to that the next thursday so i thought hey it's thursday again and so many people on the channel have responded positively to uh these videos featuring momsteen and have requested a lot of uh for more of his music so uh the the two most requested pieces that i've received uh is to do uh black star and uh far beyond the sun so we're gonna do black star today and then next time we'll do far beyond the sun uh i don't have it specifically on the schedule yet but uh it'll be soon uh this song is off the same album as the icarus suite opus 4. it's off of rising force which was released in 1984 and when i asked some of the fans should i do a live version or a the studio version they said go for the studio version it's it's kind of the quintessential version of the song so that's what we're going to do uh this is going to be ingva j malmsteen uh off of the rising force album playing black star black star this is the the very first track off of his very first studio album so uh we'll see what it's all about y'all ready okay here we go [Music] it's lovely five to five in e flat [Music] ooh one of those harmonics changed it from major to minor [Music] we're not in the baroque era anymore [Music] he has such an interesting tone [Music] [Applause] so he's got a consistent e flat in the bass i have learned over the past few weeks that his standard tuning is to tune down to e flat and that's what this piece is in so he's not uh he's on he's using open strings but he's an e flat instead of instead of e and these two ports is going back and forth between or just a one chord and a four chord uh with the e flat pedal in the bass and the chords just change over the top of it using that penalty flag [Music] [Applause] it's a lovely sound it really is i'm that's cool i i'm consistently um impressed by guitar players that can play these parallel thirds or these double passages um with uh with great technical ability [Music] over the dominant d flat [Applause] back to one there's a minor full chord [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] different guitar or different settings sounds slightly different [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] like i said his sound is extremely unique to my ears [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] the chords are very simple the palette of the chords are very simple and it allows him space to play all of these uh big time passages over the top of it it's a it's a very baroque era thing to do to set up this relatively slow moving chords that allow for a lot of improvisatory fast notes this thing keeps coming back it's really neat i wish that beginning part with the acoustic would come back for something um uh different or a contrasting section here in the middle this all sounds pretty consistent sort of um almost like an overture to the rest of the album it feels like um it's just pointing to something that's going to come next and i think far beyond the sun is the next track so it may just be a large setup for the big song to come is it already over wow fade out the eight the classic 80s fade out i never liked the fade out have y'all did what do you guys think um that's it cool uh i almost want to go on to black star and see what that sounds like uh actually should we do that uh uh bonus not black star sorry far beyond the sun far beyond the sun let's try another one that goes into [Music] he's up in f minor from where he was [Music] so a step higher so [Music] [Applause] [Music] this one's got a little bit more um drive to it i think than the other one does um huh i'm now wondering if i should have stick with this one for the whole time how long is this song that's five minutes oh we're already almost a minute uh uh bonus that's a double mom steam thursday [Music] [Applause] [Music] the thing that i like about what he's doing even in these minor keys that's i think a little bit different than other bands that are playing a lot in minor keys is that he's using the true functional v chord the major five chord a lot of these bands are if they're in a minor key they do the flat six flat seven one and anyway i've heard him do that as well but when he gets to the dominant the five chord he's using the major five chord which has a leading tone so if he's an f minor he's using a c major chord which has an e natural in it that leading tone to f and that's going to be more influenced by uh functional harmony by functional tonality from the western uh european art music of the recent past instead of by modality and just using the notes that are in the natural minor scale so if you've ever heard people talk about harmonic minor or melodic minor that's where that raised leading tone comes from and so it does hold through that he's influenced by these um classical and baroque era composers [Music] oh cool [Music] little descending fifth sequence in there wouldn't be mom's team without it right [Music] i love the organ sounds with this as well to me uh this is just a little bit more fleshed out than uh the previous piece the previous piece uh black star uh functions in my gear is almost like an introduction to the rest of the album as much as it does as a standalone piece on its own man it sounds like the 80s [Music] [Applause] me [Music] it's an extended dominant i said those chords don't move or change very quickly [Music] is that a weird guitar sound or is that like a keyboard [Music] [Music] i have to admit i have to admit it i have a lot of respect for what he's doing uh he has great technical ability and uh these pieces allow us to hear his prowess and facility on the instrument musically they're not my favorite [Applause] it kind of reminds me yeah it reminds me a little bit of the way we've talked about this a little bit before with long scene the way that paganini would write music for himself to show off and not show off necessarily but to display a virtuosic talent there's some pieces that are built for virtuosity just for the sake of virtuosity [Music] as a first priority instead of melodic or emotional content so if you're looking to hear just somebody shred just because they can and it sounds great it pumps you up then then this is obviously the music for you [Music] if i'm listening to this to hear a really great tasteful melodic guitar playing i'm sorry but i'm not going to pick it or i might pick something else first [Music] uh full disclosure [Music] and um yeah full disclosure it um i have a several favorite guitar players um and they tend not to be the people that play the most notes uh like eric clapton um and bb king i i tend to really love a more blues style of guitar playing rather than the really fast uh virtuosic style of playing although i have come to very much appreciate folks like momstein folks like steve vi uh petrucci and a lot of the other guitar players that we've heard on the channel uh uh it's it's very interesting to me and and again i've never heard this stuff before uh so it's it's fascinating to see what's been going on kind of simultaneously to me with me being unaware but uh it's fascinating stuff uh i i think i need to just listen to the whole album and and just let the whole thing filter through uh i'm looking back at the at the album uh track listing from rising force black star starts it so that's what we heard and then it goes to far beyond the sun which bonus we just heard as well and then it goes to now your ships are burned and then a couple of pieces including the dream suite opus 4 that seem to be based uh specifically on existing classical or baroque era pieces and then a few other uh pieces to uh to end out that um that album uh it does say that there's some vocals on the um on the album we haven't heard anybody sing uh yet or at least i haven't but uh uh maybe i'll uh tune in later and and listen to the whole thing but uh thanks to the momstein fans for for giving me some some love and for suggesting his music to me i am happy to have uh reviewed it and reacted to it so today was it was a two for a surprise twofer we did black star and far beyond the sun black's star he starts off it started off in e flat major with that nice acoustic thing that by the way never came back i would have loved to have heard that introduced and incorporated into more of the music as it goes um and then we went to far beyond the sun and i really liked uh the combination of the two it they i think they worked really well so thanks for being with me today and uh tomorrow we got a big one coming up so stay tuned for a big episode tomorrow until then we'll see you next time on the daily doug
