and now it's time for another diced our review with Tom vassal hey folks today we're taking a look at a deck building game called Clank this is from renegade games and this is a deck building adventure and in Clank you are a someone going into a dungeon and you're going through that dungeon and you're collecting treasures trying to find a precious artifact and get out but this is a deck building game think of Dominion or ascension games where you will start with 10 cards but you're solely going to get more and better cards as the game goes by let's take a look at how it plays so in this game players are going to be going through a dungeon and they're trying to get points in various different ways as the game goes by they'll be collecting coins and gold and they can keep these four points at the end of the game although if they go to the market here they'll be able to spend them to get various things players are going to try to get one artifact or different artifacts out there that the cheapest one is worth five points while the most expensive one down here or the biggest one is going to be 30 points or 25 point no 30 points over here sometimes they're going to find different mysteries these mysteries can be things that will help them as the game goes by but some of them are worth points they can buy points down here or go over here and find the monkey the monkey treasures that give them points so there's various ways to get points but also players are going to have a deck of cards and while none of the cards in their deck are worth points at the beginning of the game some cards are going to be worth points as the game goes by so there's various ways to get points now players are going to have a handful or give out their own deck and they're going to shuffle the deck and draw five cards on your turn you're going to play these cards and do what the cards say cards are going to give you different kinds of currencies you have experience this currency can be used to buy new cards there are three cards that are always available there's these explore cards which have a cost of three experience down at the bottom there are secret tome cards which are basically worthless but at the end of the game worth seven points they cost seven experience and there are mercenaries which cost two and they give you one experience and then two combat combat is another thing that players will be able to use over the course of the game they can always beat up on goblins there's a goblins card they'll be able to beat up on or maybe they can fight other monsters that might show up for example if you have three swords you can defeat this ogre who will give you five coins when you defeat him he doesn't go in your deck you discard him but there are other cards that you can get from here that will do for things like for example this one here gives you an experiences sword and you draw a card when you play it this one here gives you a sword and a movement point this one here gives you two movement but also gives you plus two Clank and this one here the dragon attacks or minus two Clank and you'll notice that as I'm looking these cars sometimes there's a card here stumble when you play this you have to take a Clank what is a Clank whenever you play card that gives Clank you have to throw cubes of your color up here in the clanking area now this is deadly or can be potentially deadly when anyone buys some of the face-up cards here from this big deck and there's all sorts of cards in his deck from enemies to one-time-use devices to cards you'll stick in your deck and use whenever you draw new cards you're going to look and if that card shows a dragon then the dragon is going to attack you'll look and see where the dragon is on his dragon track but whenever someone takes an artifact the dragon moves if you find a dragon egg he moves so you look where is let's say he's here then you're going to first you're going to take all the cubes here and Clank and throw them into this bag this bag has already been seated with a bunch of black cubes you will then draw cubes out equal to the Dragons rho3 cubes and if you draw black cubes they just get discarded but here I drew 2 red and a yellow that means red has been hit twice and yellow has been hit once at the bottom of the board you keep track your hit points and if your hip points ever go to 10 you lose 10 hit points you are dead and dying could put you out of the game if you die and your characters below this green line you're out of the game no points if you dine you're above grabbed well then the villagers rescue you and you but you're out of the game for the rest of the games you have to be careful not to get too much Clank into that bag because it's going to be eventually pulled or you can get out of the dungeon before that happens now the other part of this game besides that these cards so whenever your turn you play the cards use all the currency on the cards you then discard the cards you draw more cards any cards you buy go on your discarded pile and as the game progresses you'll eventually run out of cards and so you'll have to shuffle your discard pile make it a new draw pile and draw cards to play them again alright so your cards will get better and better as time goes by but several the cards give you movement points and when you spend movement points you will move your character across the board through different paths now there are some things about these paths so let's take a look here where this character is now some paths you simply pay one movement point for example to go from here to here crystal caverns when you go there you have to stop moving even if you have extra movement points if there are footprints like from here to here you would have to pay an extra movement point so that cost me 2 movement points to go here when you cross a monster if you have a sword you can cancel each monster symbol but otherwise each monster symbol adds another hit point to your total when you cross this lock symbol well you can't unless you go to the market place which is down farther and you spend 7 gold coins to buy a key it's worth 5 but it also allows you to cross all these locked areas some spots like this arrow here you can only go one way through those areas when you go into some areas there's minor secret tokens you get to draw one and do something with that token is lets you get rid of a card out of your deck this one here is a dragon egg which enrages the dragon but it's also worth three points at the end of the game this one here is a potion which can heal you one of your hip points that you've taken then there's also major secrets here's when I heels to hit points this major secret here is just like goblet that's worth seven points at the end of the game so you're going to go around and collect those you also need to go get an artifact somewhere because you cannot win the game unless you get one so maybe you go here to get an artifact or travel down here to get the 25 point artifact as you can see it gets more and more dangerous to travel round down there you can eventually leave the dungeon if you so desire you have to get all the way up to the top if you successfully leave with an artifact you will get an extra 20 point token and then your character is placed here and then each of your next friends you do nothing but you attack with the dragon with an extra cube then with two extra cubes and with 3 X cubes then everybody who is still in a dungeon dies after that point when that happens or if everyone gets out of the dungeon you simply add up all your points and whoever has the most is the winner of the game now I have to admit when I first started playing this game I was a little mmm wasn't quite sure right I was like I don't know this the initial play was very similar to ascension ascension is a game that has multiple currencies and has face-up cards that you can buy and it has a cultist you can beat up like the poor goblins here so it has these things available and I thought this is kind of like ascension with a board well as I played it more it is ascension with the board however now I showed you the board there is actually two sides of the board so there's two different castles that you can go through this is the one I showed you and this is the other side and so there's some differences between the boards but adding that board has made all the difference because this is a deck building game but also as they push your luck element to it now you can run in and you can grab that really cheap five artifact and run out and then try to collapse a dungeon before everybody else gets out and gets enough points that's extremely risky strategy though because all someone has to do is get the ten point artifact and then start buying some cards and things that give them more points and so the game yeah I thought someone can run in and get out and win now probably not the best strategy but you have to get out at some point at some point you're like I have enough stuff I'm out of here and if you because it's getting out there's two things one you get to get out of the deep where that green line is because if you don't you lose the game I haven't seen that happen in a game but because that threat is always there it makes people think twice about going down too far but secondly you want to get to the top because you get that 20 point token 20 point is 20 points so this game it certainly has luck as you go around and find different things you have to decide when you go to the shop is that key worth it in my opinion yes is the backpack worth that you can buy a backpack that lets you carry two artifacts that's pretty good is it worth of just buying victory points or maybe I shouldn't buy anything at all to say buy gold for points at the end of the game where do I want to move to do I want to go where other players have gone I want to go a different direction what are the cards I'm buying in the deck and there are so many interesting cards that you find in these decks so you know basically tropes like maybe a ladder which I can use one time for an extra two movement or a wand of recall which if I have an R in fact I can teleport to an adjacent room or this card I can draw a card and if I have a monkey idol gives me plus two experience so I want to go get one of those monkey idols and there's different companions like this rebel Minor which says it gives me two gold if I have another companion I also draw a card and there's lots of different cards and they're fun to add to your thing they add a little bit of flavor and theme so there's just interesting things going on on your turn you're like oh that's fun and interesting now like many deck builders because there's fun and interesting on your turn I think a three-player game is better than a four player and the two-player games pretty fast but I think three is where it's at because you don't wait too long for your next turn four is not too lengthy but still you can get involved in your buying decks and where you're moving people on the board the game components are okay cards a little thinner than I like I would prefer that you something other than cues maybe little hearts or something for the bag those are minor quibbles I do like the artwork of the game I love how the board looks as you go through the dungeon and all and the thing was as I played it it was really fun you know recently I played um the Underdark Dungeons & Dragons deck building game which you had area control and I liked area control a lot and that was a good game however I think this one blows away just in terms of sheer woohoo moments and I love that about this game and this is a game that as soon as I was done playing it I was like ooh let's let's play that again because it just had so much entertaining I like thick building right but I also like the idea of exploring and going and finding stuff and then getting out before time runs out and those who are combined here in a very good entertaining way and then the whole Clank mechanism has that level of danger I've died I've never made a dungeon by the way but I've always died above ground at least but I I always had like that thing I might make it put that whole Clank mechanism it works really well some cards are really good but they make you do more clanking and the word clank gets thrown around maybe too much and over the course of the game but hey folks I recommend this one really cool neat new game Clank a deck building adventure taste our judgment excellent thanks so much for watching the diced our videos find more great videos and reviews as well as our top rated audio podcast at
