[Music] [Applause] [Music] hi friends welcome to my sewing room my name is beth and if you're new here welcome i'm sewing some strings together today and making a circle of strings right here it takes nine six inch pieces to make this block two four half square triangles four squares with strings and then a center square so let's get started we're going to start our block today with the triangle string block and i have my strips of fabric here i have a seven inch square foundation with paper and i have a seven inch square for the background and my background is white so i'm going to start like i usually do with my foundation piecing with a scrap of fabric going down the middle diagonally and then i will add strips on either side of that and i want the strip to hang off just a little bit if it moves around too much you can put a pin right here in the middle but we're not going to be too particular about um getting it exactly through the middle i think it'll be about right and then i just put my seam just a little past the paper there and trimmed that off i'm just going to finger press looks like i have a lot of threads hanging off there try to get those out of the way and let's add another piece [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] i'm going to trim my square of strips and scraps and i'm going to trim it to about seven inches and we don't need to be exact quite yet we still have to make a half square half square triangle with our scraps after we have it cut i need to take the paper off sometimes i forget to mention that in the videos first i fold the paper and then i rip it off so now we have a nice square and i want to be sewing this direction so i'm going to use a ruler and a pencil and draw a line through the middle of this square [Music] and now i'll sit down at the sewing machine and also on either side of that pencil line [Music] we also need to trim these we started with a seven inch square and then we added that seam so i'm not sure i think it would probably be about six and a half right now but we want it to be six inches so it will match the um block that we're going to make so we do need to trim this a little bit and i do like my square ruler that i can measure up to 15 inches square i know they make smaller ones but this is the one i have so now it's six inches and it'll be the same size as the next block that we're going to make now i'm going to be sewing some scraps together they are all a little bit longer than six inches because my block will be six inches i want a little wiggle room this one might be yeah this is just a tiny bit bigger than six so i can kind of use this as my gauge and then i will want it to be six inches wide so let's see how we do and sometimes i leave the ends hanging off [Music] i'll press this or maybe i can look right here yeah look at that six inches almost exactly so i'm going to press this and then we're going to trim it all right i've pressed my my block and it's almost exactly six inches wide so let's trim it up here just a teeny tiny bit and i will need four of these string blocks and four of these half square triangles to make my large [Music] block with strings and if i'm making a quilt i probably won't use two of the same like these two match so i'm going to get sewing and make the whole block [Music] [Applause] [Music] so all of our little scrappy pieces are ready to go we just need a six inch square for the middle and now i'll sew them all together and we will have our block [Music] thanks for sewing with me today see you next time [Music] you
