hey guys today we're here to talk about cinema verite which is a style made popular in documentary filmmaking veritate the word itself means truth so truthful cinema and was developed by these two french guys in the early 1960s direct takes more of an observational mode going into this more fly in the wall shooting but they still have this ability of provoking their subject which is why it goes into this fair taste style as well the traditional way was just too expensive with the studios and lights and everything and it just wasn't as easy as it was until things got revolutionary and cameras like the eclair had was able to synchronize visuals and audio together on the 60 millimeter camera i'm talking about which was a very popular camera at that time the new news reporting potential of the mobile camera the sync sound was electrifying to sum this all up verte is just capturing your story with realism so no actors no you know scripting dialogue or making scenarios just your subject and your camera and your job is to portray it truthfully so along came this guy roger tilton i didn't know from adam and said he wanted to film young people dancing in a hall in new york everyone had told him the only way to do this is with the big cameras the big sound machines and clap sticks and the whole thing and he said no screw the tripod screw the dolly screw all the stuff you can move [Music] so anyways here are some key elements to factor in when shooting cinema verte so first i would say go grab your camera and just shoot handheld and just in natural lighting because this whole thing about cinema verte is just being portable lightweight it was a thing back in the day for uh indie filmmakers and people on a low budget to be able to go out there and capture what they wanted we were shooting handheld no tripods no lights no questions never ask anybody to do anything primary which is a great film to go watch if you want uh example of direct cinema shooting which was also a political film and was new to journalists because they were able to see an insider look of politics so that would be the next thing i would say is find a story in social or political issues and just make sure you portray everything truthfully that's the whole thing about this my idea that television journalism should be more human and spontaneous and more involving um some may argue that having a camera present uh kind of warps the realism of your character there's a film on that which is what like i don't know if i mentioned it but is what made cinema verte popular and got developed to where it is today it's called chronicles of of a summer and uh you should watch that that's a really important film to go check out because that is what everything i'm talking about and the experiment of if people change when a camera is present in an interview or just a normal conversation and and they also take the direct cinema approach as well we decided to make a film without any script without any scenario the only idea would be [Music] what what is your life the question would be are you happy eduardo silva play it go check those films out you'll enjoy them you can also go see the bob dylan don't look back that's a perfect example of cinema verite as well are there any poets like ellen ginsberg but that's pretty much it for today that sums everything up i wanted to say so i hope you enjoyed that please like and share this video it helps me out as a new youtuber so please and thank you and i'll see you guys next time cheers
