Church Awakening Conference 2022 | DAY ONE: Morning Session with Jim Cymbala

yeah thank you you may be seated thank you good morning everyone how are you all is well good uh i just want to get one little thing out of the way which uh past er alec by the way i i really so respect pastor alec rita the the family the leadership here thank you for inviting me it's a great thing you're doing here because as iron sharpens iron so one man sharpens another and women too we we need each other amen you all know there are no denominations to god you know that right no i'm serious you know that right when denominational people say we meaning there did not god told us that's totally they're as they say in new york they'd be tripping they don't really know what they're talking about because god only has one church he only has one body one lord one faith one baptism so we're in this together if you're blessed i'm blessed i don't know what you believe on secondary doctrine we're all in this together we got a root for each other amen and i feel that spirit here um when i was stuck as i said last night in florida for 16 months went down there for four days on march 8 2020 and um carol and i uh ended up because of the pandemics thing for 16 months so um i started meeting with pastors five at a time the southern baptist leaders found out i was in florida and said could we bring five pastors over and their wives we said great and then assemblies of god church of god the next week different groups hispanic brethren all kinds of different groups were coming regularly and we were making coffee and little bought from publix little banana bread or something and serving them and we heard them open up and talk and tell us how they were called and then we read the scriptures and i i saw the discouragement that was happening because nobody knew where we're going with this thing remember when this all began who knew so um i learned a lot and then i started to visit some of the churches they opened a little a lot earlier than in new york and um saw things and learned and talked and then i saw these some of these statistics like 15 to 1700 pastors are leaving the ministry every month the last polling three weeks ago a month ago at the most 38 i think it's pew research 38 of all the ministers in america would like out right now and another if they could get a job to support their family and one third of the rest say they don't feel healthy spiritually emotionally laying off staff less money coming in you know all the stuff going on the racialization of everything the politicalization of everything uh you can't even order a hot dog without getting in a fight with someone about something because it's just the what our culture has turned into and our church and what we've learned here has isn't it so i'm not talking negative i'm talking positive in the sense of truth you god can't help us until you face the truth positive talking and yelling at like there's something other than truth is not of the lord when he wrote to the church of laodicea he said you're neither hot nor cold but you lukewarm what if they would have said i don't receive that no that's negative i don't know no way no way no that's jesus talking but whatever situation we're in he can help us get out amen he can lift us and help us through but if anyone's sick among you let them call the elders of the church you can't get that prayer done until you first say you're sick then you can call the elders of the church so this is not positive thinking and mental positivism christianity is walking with the lord revealing he reveals his truth to us and then we look to him for answers well i was in florida sitting in this chair in my study there and i was doing daily devotions god opened the door a church there large baptist church said how can we help you jim and the brooklyn tabernacle i said well you know i don't know what's going on they said okay look come to our church and i give you every tuesday whatever time you need with our videography team really top videography team ottawa baptist church and you do your sunday sermons and any conference invitations and then we'll give you another studio after that and you'll do your daily devotions which i started i did 340 down there and then i've come back and since kept it up and um it's it's helping people now and the audience has expanded around the country and world but i was sitting in the chair one day lamenting like oh god pastors they're going through so much and uh you know uh pastor alec really misspoke when he said the original flatbush avenue building that was a theater it was fairly large and now we're in a much bigger theater but um the original building was a rundown church on atlantic avenue in downtown brooklyn that seated about 180 to 200 people run down broken pews one time when i was preaching the pews gave way one pew people it cracked people fell on the floor people thought it was a move of the holy spirit and started like whoa yes yes and it was nothing but a bad pew but hey i whatever i could get at that point i was happy so um so there were 15 or 18 people on sunday morning and the first offering that i oversaw was 85 dollars was the total tithes and offering so i don't think there's too many discouragements that you all face that carol and i haven't faced she had to get a second job i got a second job because we couldn't live with 85 offerings and a mortgage to meet and there was three or four dollars in in the checking account when we went so um [Music] i've been through discouragements and all of that stuff so sitting in that chair and i felt the lord say to me what are you doing to help these pastors what are you doing because i have a heart for pastors for the last 10 12 years i've been traveling around the country and around the world in korea in some of these mega churches just talking to pastors trying to encourage them and um so i prayed lord what can i do i'm in florida i'm you know what can i do so i we got a hold of a high-end studio and long story short i don't want to bore you um i went in over a long period of time and i taped 30 episodes 10 minutes each and it's called the calling and it's the pastor and the bible the pastor preparing a sermon the pastor and money the pastor and discouragement the pastor and sin the pastor and missions the pastor and prayer couple on those couple on the holy spirit the pastor and whatever uh the pastor in humility etc etc so i had these 30 done and now we put them all together not selling anything um it's called the thecallingseries.org thecallingseries.org say that with me the bible my own experiences and i've had a lot of them i told you last night about when i started preaching my sermons were so bad i fell asleep while i was preaching rather than just the congregation i felt we all should take a rest so so if that will help you just sample one or two if you don't like it mazel tov well god bless you if it will help you praise god watch them and and be encouraged so i want to bring you a familiar verse and talk to you about something that is like a hidden virus a hidden problem it existed way before the pandemic but now it's really gotten bad and the verse that i want to uh tell you about is philippians 4 6 and 7. and it says do not be anxious about anything but in everything every situation excuse me the niv by prayer and petition with thanksgiving present your request to god and the peace of god which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in christ jesus you all know that verse do not be anxious about anything but in every situation by prayer and petition with thanksgiving presents your request to god and the peace of god will guard your hearts and minds like a sentinel marching around your heart and your mind so right now our congregations and the church at large is suffering from something way worse than coronavirus or omicron or delta that can only attack your body but this thing called worry and anxiety is a killer totally a killer and the problem with it is it's not among just among our members and the sheep that god has put us as shepherds over but it's in the ministry it's been always been in the ministry we cover it up because we have to front in front of the people you know praise god he's on the throne and all that i mean while the guy is just a nervous wreck worrying about everything but we're not going to tell the people that when we're not going to act like that i was so worried you know when i first went in the ministry because people in the pew right now they have what to worry about what's the new normal how about my job how about my children how about my retirement right now in new york city people are worried about getting on the subway i mentioned it last night just shove shoving off the off the platform onto the tracks the other day yes two days ago someone knocked on the door of our church security went to open it the doors used to be open all the time anyone could walk in we've had to stop that we have a police officer in the in the lobby on sunday morning and the afternoon service and tuesday night the prayer meeting just to try to stop anyone who wants to get crazy hopefully that it'll stop it and this people knocked on the door and they went yo we want some clothes we want clothes and shoes social security said i'm sorry we don't have any and they try to push him back and the doors and said no we're not joking we want something we're not leaving so this is now commonplace so members of our church are worried about getting the subway at night because it's just crazy my daughter sue was coming to work the other day from forest hills which is in queens and she said you know dad i didn't know what to do so the train came into the station and the first car was uh totally uh filled with people just like cattle car the next one no one was in because there was a guy a mentally ill homeless person laying in his own feces in urine so no one was getting in that car the third car had two guys there and some of them aggressive some are passive so people just worried worried about their children at school worried about predators worried about finances worried about making their rent but ministers we ministers we can easily worry and cover it up and what do i preach on on sunday are the people enjoying this why are people leaving the attendance is down ooh the offerings are down um you know all the things we can worry about uh social media demonic demonic i'm talking to pastors in florida and they're telling me pastor jim i'm losing members and we're not even open i went how'd you do that he said well we made an announcement that when you come back we were gonna wear masks or whatever and people on social media in the church started yelling uh on social media i'm never coming back you demon i i knew you were one of those masked people you know people are like whack and and and then and then uh in the same room the other pastor said no that can't happen breaking down crying saying i sent out email when we opened they opened earlier in florida it was different there as you know uh we're we're not going to wear a mask if you don't want and all of that i've been coming to that church for my family for 30 years you'll never see me again these are christians who are supposed to go to heaven together and be together you know father i pray that they might be one even as as we are one no it's sick so here's what we found that a lot of people go to church they're not christians first that is not their identity and don't try to sell me that they're black first they're white they're conservative they are liberal they're fox news their cnn that's what they are that's what they are first and if you disagree with them they don't care even if you're a member of the body of christ they will just sliver you up rip your tonsils out they will devour you on social media and then get up and go hallelujah oh hallelujah it's so sick it's just sick the politicalization racialization it is a killer god listen i want to announce to you god is only one holy nation and it's us christians are the holy nation i don't want to see america god make america great again like paul never said let's oh god make macedonia great again he never said that anywhere how about the church being great again come on let's put our hands together god make the church great again let him take care of the nations who he rises up one puts down another whatever i'm not interested in that i'm it's just seeing people get converted and the church be strong full of light full of power then god will take care of that effect that it has on the culture we're aiming at the culture and unbelievers instead of aiming at the church being what god wants it to be so that's another sermon for another day so we'll let's move on so i want you to notice let's just break this down be anxious about nothing because of the double negative in the greek of that sentence some translations have it which are more literal don't worry about a single thing or some don't worry not even worry about a single thing there's great emphasis so the same god who says love one another don't kill don't commit adultery don't steal that same god says don't worry about a single thing worry is a sin because it's a commandment from god not to worry it's really the besetting scent of a lot of us some of us have a phd in worry we could just worry our lives away course covered up totally covered up but worry how do the people like me how did i do why am i not invited or if i am invited how am i doing i could worry now are you liking my message we all know what this is all about there's pressures to worry finances future retirement our children yo our children pastors are are worrying and fretting because what's happening to my daughter what's happening in my son so i want you to notice there this is not something light that we just accept that's been the problem well you know sister lillian in the church he's just a worrier that's like saying she's doing crack to god she's not supposed to worry wait a minute we're not wait wait wait we're not supposed to worry i'm not trying to be clever here we're not supposed to worry do i get an amen god forbids it god forbids it don't worry about a single thing not even a single thing not big things not little things not needing six million dollars which i once needed and and god came through or needing sixty dollars don't worry so everyone has found the doctors have proven that worry is totally destructive it doesn't change one thing when you worry it changes nothing except you so the doctors now the scientists say it breaks down the body's resistance to disease germs bacteria just worry no matter how we're fronting when you're wearing and i'm wearing we open ourselves and become weak nothing changes about the situation you can worry till the cows come home nothing's changing by our worry our fretting so and yet we worry the other thing about it is very grievous to god in two ways first of all worry is the opposite of faith if we walk by faith we can't worry if we're worrying we're not walking in faith end of story you can't be full of faith and be worrying and if you're worrying you're not full of faith it's either going to be faith or worry and remember without faith it's impossible to please god you can cry a river you can lay down prostrate yourself you can run around the aisles whatever your thing is but if you leave the doors and you're still full of worry the whole thing is for nothing for nothing poor nada for nothing faith is what god is looking for so this hurts our ministry hurts our preaching how can i get up and preach a strong sermon when i'm worried i'm not even sure god will take care of me but i'm telling the people crushed in the lord with all thine heart and lean not it's like stop just stop and let god work in your heart and conquer that worry today we're going to do business with god right here in a few minutes we're getting rid of worry in the name of jesus how many say amen but here's here's the here's the other part that's so sad so i have three children and seven grandchildren and one of the children is my daughter susan's grandchildren one of them well let's make it from me when my daughter sue was little and in the second grade so the teacher she's in the second grade we were living in brooklyn then and let's say the teacher and the principal call me and say mr mrs symbol could you please come to the chur to the school we need to talk so i go to the school and they get me in an office with carol and they say listen there's a problem what problem a problem with your daughter what problem with my daughter well she's not learning why isn't she learning because she's not paying attention why is she not paying attention we don't know she looks out the windows she's very anxious she bites her nails she's not socializing properly i said what are you talking about that's my daughter yeah that's why we called you in because we know we know you care about her so so what do you explain this to me all right so we've taken her aside and saying why don't you concentrate why don't you learn why aren't you at your best because i'm i'm worried that at the end of school today that my daddy or my mommy won't pick me up what are you talking about this teacher yeah and then she said and when i go home i'm not sure they'll feed me and clothe me now listen you could punch me or uh in in the stomach or hit me across the face nothing could hurt more than hearing that nothing there's nothing my daughter is afraid i won't pick her up is insecure and not functioning properly out of anxiety and and worry that her dad and mom won't come through for her so i would go to my daughter and say sue when did we ever not pick you up oh no i know you always pick me up but i'm not sure that you know today you'll pick me up when did we never feed you or take care of you you're my sioux you're my daughter i love you that would be a killer for any of us right how do you think god feels when you and i are worrying and he says i gave you my son when you didn't even want me now that i gave you my son do you think i'm going to let you fall in a black hole how could you worry how could you be anxious i'm your father i taught you to pray jesus said our father we have a father how many times have i come through for you what are you worrying about what are you going off on a side trail here a rabbit hole taking you away from walking in my love and with confidence and faith that's what we're doing to god when we worry and don't don't avoid that that's what i do to god my father when i worry and fret for what porque for what after god is how many have a track record here with god god has been faithful in your life lift up your hand so imagine when we worry secretly outwardly you know pastors used to be in the 30s 40s 50s they used to live very very long in america they held a record there for you know longevity of life and now it's way down pastors the the the profession of the clergy now has the highest rate of heart attacks listen that's not from three points in a complete conclusion getting a sermon anybody can get a sermon it might not be good but we can get sermons am i right put that put us in a corner like i said last night we'll get three points and in conclusion you know what of course eats our lunch worry anxiety division in the church strife some person on staff who can't be trusted to cross the street causing all kinds of problems some guy with the preacher's itch you can't even let him pray he just recites the whole book of leviticus in his prayer and and you're worried and you're thinking what in the world who can i trust come on how many know what i'm talking about just lift your hand no that's the the real deal i i've always detested faith talk and triumphalism that's not real i've always i've always felt like i don't see that in in the new testament yes god is on the throne i got all of that but i want to be interested more is what is jesus saying to the brooklyn tabernacle how can we be more pleasing to him and we need more faith and if we're going to have more faith lord increase our faith it means worry has got to go anxiety look you got to draw a line in the sand today if you're going to go back and continue your secret worry and all of that imagine we're living we're practicing sin while we're telling people that jesus is the savior of the world you have to look at it that way otherwise what do you do with this verse do not be anxious about anything don't worry about a single thing here's the vaccines don't be anti-vaxxer today just take it okay but in everything what's everything mean everything big things little things here's what i've noticed about my own self and you study the bible some of us on big huge things we know that only god could help us so we run to him and and big things we don't worry about because we're just desperate we get there it's the little foxes that spoil the vine we're worried about this little thing and that little thing and the budget and this and this and the board meeting and what's up with that board member and we're worried about all these things then there are some people who do good on the little things but when there's a big problem we worry ourselves to death but here the scripture says but in everything every situation you're facing today look at me monetarily spiritually leadership staff family daughter son in everything what's the vaccine paul says but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving make your needs known to god so that first word for prayer is the greek word that is a general word for communion with god and what it literally means is coming into his presence in everything come into his presence bring it to him not say prayers you know now i lay me down asleep and all that that was some that is some children's prayer that we develop now i lay me down and sleep i pray the lord my soul and should i die before i wake i mean what a morbid approach to a life that is a little kid praying that so but in everything bring it into god's presence you know when i'm conscious of god and his greatness problems like melt away to me they seem so small when i'm not in god's presence a bumblebee could knock me out how many understand what i'm talking about when you handle it in yourself it's just like it's overwhelming but when you come into his presence just wait in his presence just wait in his presence can i make a suggestion to some of you i talk about it in that uh the calling series when jesus was all night in prayer you don't think he was talking the whole time do you of course not of course not he had petitions but he was waiting he was listening he was worshiping and prayer we just keep talking talking talking i need this i need that i need this i need that uh now i'm leaving bye so it's you know what's great is just come into god's presence and just wait there don't be so hyper tell god what you need that's what he's talking about but get into his presence and to there's something about god's presence it makes everything seem so inconsequential am i correct so in everything by prayer entering his presence and petition tell the lord specifically what is eating your lunch tell him well he knows everything i got that but obey the bible tell him petition tell him that lady in the church is causing me anxiety and worry or that co-worker or whatever imagine our people what they're going through through all of this they're worried they're not going to be strong in faith because they're worried but us we have to i'm worried about what to preach you know i'm not against preaching series but if i could just throw this in it's not part of the message but this is all free free of charge don't do a series unless god leads you to do a series i know that's the trend now unless you're doing a series i meet guys that know what they're preaching for the next 11 years they've mapped it all out i mean yeah it listen if god is leading you who am i but a lot of that is just a defense mechanism so you don't have to pray and ask god what to say every sunday and then you can go to study books and commentaries and you get through your three points in a conclusion and it's no more on fire than a ham sandwich it's just it's just it's just i got it mapped out right just know this in church history some of the greatest preachers they never did a series or hardly ever spurgeon never did a series jay campbell morgan great preacher he would do series on friday night um d.o moody some of the finney unknown to finney do a series although he taught at oberlin theological seminary so but just know this get into god's presence and get what he wants you to say here's what i've learned again side issue satan is attacking our churches always he's trying to do that if he tempted jesus obviously he's not afraid of us so he's going to come and let's say he starts to stir something up in the church let's say division he's always working on that right and the holy spirit wants to give you a sermon on unity and love that will combat satan even before he starts his deep work but if you're stuck in song of solomon or or you know the importance of tithing how in the world that they all have everything has a place and a time how are we going to combat through the holy spirit's help what satan is trying to do if we become mechanical and rote let's let's ask god without worrying you know like my sister she can't worry if she can't find the bible did you find the bible yet but she's not allowed to worry you're under the gun vanessa i had that happen to me i one time lost my notes left them at home when i was using notes i haven't used notes in about 15 years now but that's another story but i felt the lord deal with me about that because i was making too many points that i didn't feel in my heart you know we make too many points past this all due respect when you hear a preacher say point nine go home it's not gonna work go go home it's over why because as finney said the the heart can't feel deeply about seven things at once it can't so i i have been forced now to hone in in on what i really want to say like today don't worry about a single thing i don't talk about lucifer or the streets of gold or the mark of the beast it's all in the scripture but it has nothing to do with me and you today i just want one thing so one day i left lost my notes vanessa and i came as a lot lot the younger and i went what am i going to do and it was like the holy spirit said how sad is that without your notes you're worrying and panicking aren't i with you aren't i alive you don't have wait time out you don't have anything in your heart that i've given you to share with the people shame on you you're leaning on notes you're not leaning on me i'm going to lean on mine remember what spurgeon said i'm going off on a trail here i'm going to come back though spurgeon said spurgeon said when i'm preaching i never stay close to my notes too close because who knows what the holy spirit might show me on the subject while i'm preaching he was no wild-eyed fanatic charismatic uh extremist he was charles spurgeon but he said i have notes and they're fine to have notes but he said i don't stay too close to them otherwise i'm going to be locked into my notes instead of locked into god god is different than notes how many say amen so by everything by with petition tell the lord today as we close this tell the lord what is it causing you to worry don't be proud humble yourself he resists the proud all of us he gives grace to the humble to those who say you know help me this thing is hurting me i have and we're all built different we're all have i have different my late friend david wilkerson you know he went into gang areas and and nikki cruz got saved and he did all that stuff not ten blocks from where my church is right now our church is and uh yet for decades he couldn't get on an airplane worried anxious he couldn't fly then god broke that thing he was flying all over the world helping pastors in poland and every place so we're all built different am i correct and we have we have we're susceptible when it comes to worry in different areas but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving make your needs known to god notice this you can't just keep petitioning god and asking him you got to weave in thanksgiving why because thanksgiving gives god glory and honor but it reminds us how good he has been some of us have received 1100 things from god and now we want to go on to the next thing that is our problem and we never stop just give thanks giving thanks builds your faith it warms your heart it brings the presence of god thank them some of us you know i'm like an irs guy you know they collect back taxes some of you people you have back thanksgiving you've never given to god no the truth i'm not being trying to be funny you keep laughing at what i'm saying i'm trying to be serious you have back thanksgiving you have back thanksgiving why because that's the way we're made we're like the ten lepers there remember they were all healed only one came back they were all healed and the lord said what one didn't i heal 10. only one came back that's the way some of us are we're so worried about the next thing we don't even give thanksgiving so thanksgiving helps break worry and anxiety because when you when i think of the goodness of jesus and all that he's done for me my soul cries out hallelujah praise god he set me free so with thanksgiving bring your petitions and here's the promise which can never fail if we do that if you come and play and the peace of god now that is not your peace has nothing to do with you or jim simbla it's called the peace of god the same day that i i felt the lord direct me many years a year 15 years ago to stop preaching with notes i was empty i was worried i was discouraged my wife was in nashville doing a project i was all alone in the house i went up to this floor i had a little room there to pray and be alone and i was just empty burnt out whatever you want to call i was nowhere's phil just running around no the wisdom of a slug and and just helping this one going here i was traveling so much i almost had a nervous breakdown that's the truth and i'm i got alone with god and i spent the whole day just in that room whole day didn't he didn't do anything just with the lord and during that time i felt him impressed me to stop preaching with notes which i thought was you know strange and but it's it's worked out for my good and i hope for the people too but while there his presence came into that place and in my heart in such a deep way that i actually said out loud he's listening to me now i said what is this and the best i could sense is i'm giving you a fresh baptism of my peace now i preached about the peace of god peace with god peace of god but oh my goodness i was so overwhelmed by problems and worries but when i left that place i was floating i was just walking on air the peace of god nothing could ruffle me you know there's a place in the pacific ocean which is the deepest point in the earth there's a place in the pacific ocean so deep that it doesn't matter if there's a tsunami it never stirs down there it's so deep you could have a typhoon monsoon a hurricane whatever nothing's happening there but peace did you know god has a place for us of peace perfect peace that when you're preaching and or or waiting on god for a sermon there doesn't have to be that anxiety and but peace peace wonderful peace coming down from the father above you know that song sweep over my spirit forever i pray in fathomless billows of love there's that peace here's what god said and you know the you all know this so i'm just repeating it here's me and you and god says this is the greek picture i'll set up centuries to march around you so that nothing can disturb you the peace of god will guard your corazon isa your hearts and your minds they'll just stand guard they'll just don't you want that oh i want that i need that so bad because everything's just we've had like a reset in our church the city is different i grew up in brooklyn i don't even recognize brooklyn it's crazy it's crazy and uh new challenges but great opportunity we're baptizing i think they told me 55 people this sunday that have received christ during the two services wait and so carol and i don't want to miss it we don't want to miss it right now while i'm talking she's in the music room she's working on a new project she's trying to write songs i was praying for her today we talked this morning no last night and i said what are you doing she said i'm in bed i said you must be tired she said yeah but i'm writing a song what do you feel about this and she starts singing this song to me and she's doing a project so that could cause worry or she could have the peace of god what do you think will bring the anointing and the blessing of god anxiety or the peace of god no what do you think will help your preaching the peace of god or i hope this is good so don't you want to play i'm starting to worry about you look at this i i can't even get through a sermon here so sing with me peace peace wonderful us obviously it's scripture but today i needed to hear that i have some situation that the enemy is going to try to use to cause me to worry but if i worry i won't be pleasing to god because faith pleases him i don't want to walk and worry i want to walk in faith i want to walk in total confidence i want supernatural peace i don't want the peace that oh things look good i have peace oh now they look bad i lost my peace i want the peace of god just pastor wife worker whoever you might be get out of your seat just come up here in the front i want to sing over you i want to pray for you you just come up whatever the thing might be the enemy's trying to use you want to draw a line in the sand just come up out of your seat and stand right in front of me everyone let's sing peace [Music] father god thank you for your word to us today it's very clear [Music] because you love us you're telling us don't worry what father mother would be happy with a worried anxiety-ridden child so we're sorry we've hurt you by worrying we've offended your heart because we worry when you've said i'll never leave you never forsake you i am your provider i'm your source the psalmist said though ten i pray the peace of god over them not some human peace but the supernatural peace of god that has nothing to do with circumstances it transcends it as high the heaven is above the earth so is that peace lord so god of peace fill us with peace shower us with peace we want to be pleasing to you we want to minister in strength we want to see our churches become houses of prayer and houses of faith so make us leaders make us instruments of peace your peace that people open up to and receive while they play that every woman in the building just turn find a woman join hands face each other and pray over one another every man good whoever you are dearest man just turn grab his hands men with men ladies with ladies if you can please just pray over one another lift your voice and pray god
