I want to welcome you to our exploration of the Gospel of John and we've got a special chapter tonight a chapter that many scholars call the Holy of Holies of the New Testament but whenever we enter the Word of God we always want to do it with what prayer absolutely you got it let's bow our hearts father we thank you for the privilege of being here right now and we thank you Father for your word and we thank you especially for this particular chapter to get a glimpse into the relationship between father and son we thank you Father and we pray father that through your Holy Spirit you'd open us our hearts and lives to your word that we each might profit from the insights of this chapter as we commit this power and ourselves into your hands in the name of Yeshua our coming King indeed amen wow you know this is really it really is quite a chapter we're going to be dealing with here we're in a recession 16 John 17 and it's on the Lord's Prayer and we use that term the Lord's Prayer erroneously everybody uses that term to refer to what should be called the disciples prayer because the prayer that is that he taught his disciples to pray is one that the Lord could not pray forgive us our trespasses oh each and every trans person not a pray vegan pray to pray prayer he taught his disciples to pray if we were a little more astute we would call that the disciples prayer but it's commonly called the Lord's Prayer which is unfortunate because this is the recorded prayer the verbal prayer between the Lord Jesus and the father and the insights here are fantastic and so this is all a sequel to chapter 13 they're huge Jesus was stooping his hands on the defiled feet of disciples here his eyes are lifted up just the opposite his hand literally is on the phone and so we're going to take a look at this though it's the longest recorded prayer of our Lord Jesus intercession that's his full-time job now by the way did you realize that the primary job we know from Hebrews 7:25 is that his intercession on your behalf in mind so as we take a glimpse of what happened that time before the gas Emily irrational and I think what he's doing now what he's been doing here since he's gone he's been interceding for you and me well now we're going to explore this passage which as I say many commentators call the Holy of Holies of the New Testament we're going to look behind the veil if you will the personal needs and desires of Jesus did you realize the Jesus personal needs that may surprise us and as he talks to his father and he always called him father by the way except one time and we're going to study that too in a chapter two away from us the one time he couldn't call him father when he screams my God my God why is he feeling this is this a very simple passage in language it's it's much simpler than chapter 1 with all the logos and light and all those thing you and it doesn't us of the words your simple but the most profound meaning you'll find in the Bible will emerge from these very simple words that we're going to look at tonight a vocal prayer habit you know it's interesting to realize that Jesus had a habit of praying vocally audibly he did it during his baptism and look free he did it at the commencement of his public ministry mark Darwin he prayed especially on the eve than he was selecting his disciples and Luke 6 he prayed all night long occasionally at the Transfiguration in other times and even was breathing a prayer when he ceased to breathe on the cross local prayer how do you realize the most important work we do if I just gave you written quizzes before is opening it what's the most important work we as Christians do you could list a lot of good things but when you come to terms with our most important work its prayer that's your most powerful tool in military terms it's your heaviest armament if you want to participate in the tensions and this is how Sudan going on today you can do that in your prayer closet if you love this ministry and you love what we're trying to do here in New Zealand most powerful thing you can do is pray for us people come up to G Chuck what can do can we do for you they start expect me to ask for money or something well if you pray for us the other stuff will follow there are other needs of course but prayers are primary then I covet your prayers and we pray with you for you guys we have a little weekend coming up here we're going to have a bunch of couples for we called agape weekend dan and I will pray for every one of those all week long each room by name was powerful thing we can do to ensure a successful weekend the most powerful thing you can do to help our ministry here in New Zealand pray for us it is a warfare don't make any mistake and so we're going in so one of the questions that arises here is where did chapter 17 take place not a big deal but see chapter 14 he says there in the upper room he washed their feet and they have the upper room and and Judas and all that and then verse 31 of chapter 14 arise let us go hence you get the feeling they got up and started there are some people that believe that this this took place still in the out the room yet Calvin gave line of the good good be good scholars hold that view they have it they have their reasons for presuming that they're still in the upper room there are others Scofield Ironside penny rile and G Campbell Morgan that it's on the way to disseminate not important but just realize there's an ambiguity there it's interesting that good scholars have a slightly different perspective not a big deal just be aware of it it's interesting that all the factors of redemption we are here in chapter 17 with the primary theme of the Bible is the redemption and by the way I like to just pause on that I mean it's interesting to talk about the creation of the universe big deal it divides the world in the world tries to attribute that to randomness okay we are we hold what the Lord told us that he did it but it's interesting the creation is a big deal right created the universe I'm going to suggest to you what's even a bigger deal is the redemption for the creation how would I measure that two ways one way I would measure it is how much of the Bible is devoted to it well the creation what's that a couple of chapters in Genesis a couple of chapters in Isaiah a couple of chapters in job you can go around and pick up a few here there if you look hard enough you'll find it but you have to look for it probably a dozen chapters would cover it pretty much well okay how much of the Bible is on the redemption that's what Genesis is all about that's what Exodus is all about that's what Leviticus numbers Deuteronomy whew the whole Torah the fact as you go through slightly the Gospels the epistles revel a you know you'd only realize the entire Bible is all about the redemption there's another way to measure what's more important God created the inverse what did it cost him six days and then arrest right the redemption what is it costing and some well said exactly anyway all they all the factory Redemption are here in this chapter and salvation comes right upfront a manifestation representation the preservation the sanctification and the identification and glorification are all here echoed in this single chapter by this passionate prayer between the son and father and he prays for himself in the first five verses he's going to pray for the eleven in the next few verses then he's going to pray for you and me in the next few verses and you will also pray for unity and for union and those are not the same thing good words we'll pray for those so let's focus on these first five verses where he's going to pray for himself that requires a little reflection that the son of that Jesus himself needed prayer for himself these words spake Jesus and lifted up his eyes to heaven and said father the hour has come glorify thy son and my son that my son also may glorify thee and so he's now stopping speaking the disciples yep so now we've been in the upper room he's been talking the disciples know now he's shifting he speaks to the father for our benefit in Birds why did you out loud so they would hear him so they know what was going on and didn't have to but he did and so he lifted up his eyes that's an interesting phrase you can go through your Bible and discover that that phrase is a prelude to something significant that's a strange little phrase that shows up that the neighbors offer Isaac you lifted up his eyes you know all these male main milestones of Scripture are preceded by that little phrase and they're so lifted up his eyes so I'm 25 123 123 the Psalms of course and also in the historical words and the hour has come you know well this is the seventh time he says it's the last time genesis 3:15 is now eminent that's where it all started that was the seed part of the whole Bible is Genesis chapter 3 but we're going to shift now the focus on the father the father be glorified in the son you know it's interesting he is praying apparently on the way to go cemani Isis I were those that suspect they left the upper room they haven't got Co cemani yet because a bit of a walk that this is a newt why do I bet why's that important only for this reason you realize that you and I can pray when we're driving some people Jesus a little irreverent not necessarily Jesus did it while he's walking and so it's worth it honey noting that what's coming the hour is come several times just in John 6 and elsewhere when they wanted to take into making Kings is my time is not my arm is not yet come told his mother that at Cana remember with the wiring and all that plan our project this is the hour coming when the creation of God will see the love of God displayed and lavished as he takes your sins in mine upon himself and dies a vicarious substitutionary redemptive death for you and me paul defines the gospel with three things in in the first four verses are first Corinthians 15 he defines what we use that term gospel all the time sloppily what is the gospel will good news what do you mean good news what is what is the gospel Paul tells us and it makes no reference to his teaching no reference to the miracles no reference to his example none of those are bad no heartily that's not the gospel the gospel is that he died for our sins according to scriptures he fulfilled dozens of specific specifications he didn't disappear he died his best talking to death on the planet earth it was for you and me and then he rose again the third day as as specified in the scriptures that's that's the gospel and what's amazing about that it's hard to find a church that will Hammond that from the puppet well it's old-fashioned religion absolutely an old-fashioned religion crazy guy that works by the way anyway it's not going to end there either exactly at the cross at inside an empty tomb let's not forget that let's move on here then father and is glorify thy son dr. Simon is an arrow spective imperative deluxe oh it's the only personal petition in this prayer glorify thy son there are seven specific requests were going to discover glorification of sudden verse one restoration of his original glory will see that ecwid infers five protection of his disciples and future believers by the way were included in this languages you'll notice when we get into it and also for sanctification a world witness and unification and glorification are all specific requests that will occur in this prayer and so there are seven pleas for his own glorification his filial relationship with God in verse one at the appointed time had arrived he has authority over all flesh was given that's quite a statement we'll explore that one get the soul of eternal life on the elect was promised and you're going to discover if you haven't found out yet that your eternal security is nailed here in this chapter and he would be bringing them to a knowledge of the father and he had glorified the father on the earth and he'd finished the work given him to do that's staggering by the way he finished it the main thing to take away from that is you can't add to it he finished it attempting to finish it as blasphemy and there are doctrines there are people to teach a way that is blasphemous unfortunately let's move on verse two that's first one we're doing what make a great time here okay these continues as thou has given him power over all flesh that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him power over all flesh that's quite a statement and exuse Ian that's authority actually authority over all question he said so he's blowin a contrast here between the weakness of mankind and the majesty of God is echoed here and the power Sarkoja says all flesh that's a Hebrew idiom for the whole of humanity in its imperfection it's a phrase it captures all of that all of the imperfections of humanity we use the word flesh but that's a one user word often enough it tends to lose meaning we need to understand what that really is Jesus has complete control over all events and you might tattoo that on your forehead somehow how often we forget that I'm guilty too you know he's got complete control and that's easily demonstrated I let you make your own notes now the Messiah has dominion over all creatures that's angels and authorities you know Kurt Cork made up a very famous book many many years ago now between Christ and Satan it's a good book on demonology but has terrible terrible title it creates the illusion that there's equality between Christ and Satan uh no Christ created Satan the books not bad in its content but the title is a very misleading title many people don't they should they should stumble on that because there's no equality Satan is a created being Jesus the creator so angels authorities earth all power in heaven and on earth I don't know how you get your arms around that phrase try to define that imagine that was a written you were having a written essay ten you had to answer a what you describe explain all power in heaven and earth how can you do that you and I can't the more learned you are the more you realize we are it too inept to even put a fence around that and he's of course the head of every man and he's a head of every principality in power and he was typifies by Joseph you know Joseph is a type of Christ as a model or a because it may surprise you if you haven't never picked up Arthur W Pink's commentary on Genesis one of the things that it has as an appendix is fascinating he actually lists and details over a hundred ways that the life of Joseph is an anticipatory echo if you will of Messiah the elect were given to Christ by way of reward we find out in Isaiah 53 and by way of charge in John 6 that's old news for you at this point there are seven times if Christians are given to him by the father you can actually find eight but it depends on how you count them but obviously Christians are given to him that's going to really echo throughout this prayer that we are the father's gift to the son and the more you think about that that's pretty sobering now one of the things you're going to discover if you're really paying attention it's going to be quite boring most important things you take away from this session is the security of the believer the security of the believer rests upon the father's faithfulness to answer the prayers of a certain because Jesus is going to make a point of that and you're the subject of that prayer so we want to really focus on that because we have a vested interest in then Jesus committed believers to the Father for safekeeping in verse 11 and we of course will call your attention that when we get there there are five benefits listed in this chapter alone eternal life of course the father's name which is a blessing to us the father's words his own joy is a blessing and his own glory in fact all things caught in Romans 8:32 so this is so full of blessings that I don't think we if we tried we could really list this and by the way if you're ever in Claire for mood or devotional mood or can't sleep on I'd make a list of the way you're blessed and you can't exhaust it the more you think of the more you'll we might be reminded of it's impossible to exhaust that list believers are recipients of over a hundred and thirty-one benefit I've listed five here's over one hundred and thirty-one there's be listed values from salvation claimed from the moment that you trust from the day you trust Christ they're yours see all men will exist forever that may shock you because the real you is software not hardware ins that has no time which means your eternal with your saved or not all men will exist forever because you'll be disconnected from time when you lose the materiality of our temporary existence but only believers will experience an eternal life of joy with God all you have to do is be perfect or have that perfection imputed to you by the Father Christ as for what he knew would be given to him something else we need to really reflect on you're going to see unfold as we go here we need to pray for what God wants to do now that sounds strange doesn't it even in the disciples prayer he says thy will be done we pray that your will God be done there's nothing more certain on the planet earth that God's will is going to be done so why should we pray for it Daniel was our example Daniel was in captivity in Babylon he knew it'd be seventy years about 67 gone by he knew that seventy years were almost up he's reading Jeremiah and realized that the time is almost up that they're about to be freed because he knows that God had promised them that after seven years they'd be able to go back home after being captive to Babylon so what is what does he do the American Way is to put your feet on the desk say go hmmm say that's that's thing that gonna be great Daniel didn't do that he prayed for what he knew God was going to do in fact when you read Daniel 9 the first 20 verses even in the English translation you can see him tremble the frequency of the herbs picks up he's even reading in the English you just see him work himself up in this there so much so that the angel Gabriel interrupts them so no one's the interrupted prayer of the Old Testament he gives them the famous flash four verses of Daniel 9 and all that yeah we need to pray for God wants to do that should probably be our most frequent prayer when and I pray for you guys all the way over here we did we pray that God's purpose will be accomplished in each of you I don't know if those purposes are wouldn't be presumptive and they're certainly not the same thing because each one of you in here and slightly different needs but God knows what they are and the way we pray for you is that God's will be done in your life Wow isn't that simple yeah it's simple can you think of anything more important there's nothing more important in your life than to do what to have accomplish what God's going to do so jesus prayed for that which had been predestined that sounds like a contradiction doesn't it well I'm not gonna try to unravel that one but I know we're supposed to do to the extent we know what God's will is we should be praying for it well he continues very we're down to verse 3 we're doing just fine here and this is life eternal that they might know thee the only true God and Jesus Christ whom thou has sent that says it all doesn't it that they might know that the whole here goes closin present active subjunctive they should keep on knowing that was it's a progressive thing it's progressively perceived as another way to translate that see the knowledge of God is a continual growing experience none of us ever finished God is not finished with anyone in this room me especially every one of us is in a growth current life sometime every one of us probably needs to raise the bar on a personal walk be deliberate about be committed about it see beaten Paul says he knows only in part that's even after a lifetime of study he praised that I may know him he said that at the end of his prayer is entitled there isn't anyone that was better taught in Judaism because he from Gamaliel he was a Pharisee of Pharisees he also had the best Greek schooling available in that era it's probably the the most brilliant - ever walk the earth but Romans demonstrates that and yet he's the one at the end of his race that I might know who I know him and why I'd like to know more Wow so - no not speculative but practical not theoretical but experimental not intellectual but spiritual not inactive but saving you can also say serving two things believers should know about as part of this eternal life he is the only true God versus false way it's only through Jesus Christ we covered that several times for John 14:6 if you can take any other first out of John you want to hang on to that one and Jesus is the Messiah sent by God it's astonishing how many Christians have no idea that he's Jewish it's amazing the burden that some of the Jewish groups have is just getting Christians to wake up the fact that Jesus is Jewish he is king of the Jews he's going to be king of Israel so be a monarchy moving on Jesus Christ do you know that word that phrase only appears twice in this gospel we use that so casually hey Christian is a predicate accuser and implies a title it's not his last name it's a title the eye of the International Standard Version you doesn't use the word Christ in the entire New Testament uses Messiah to step in the right direction the Old Testament doesn't say children of Israel calls in Israelis they did it partly out of mischief but that's good yeah and so but Silas it's an heiress tension phasing the historic fact of Christ's mission verse four I've glorified thee on earth I finished the work which gave us me to do you and I can't cannot add a thing to his finish Gordon the gospel of salvation is not what God is asking you to do but what God is telling you he has already done for you Alleluia is writing absolutely I have finished the work he says and he's it's done and he's going to declare that from the cross Ted tell us die in John 19:30 às it's uh it's translated the you know it is finished the Greek word means paid in full hello I've come to thy will in hebrews 10:7 even when he was twelve years old remember we told his parents I wish you not that I must be about my father's business my meat is to finish his work that's echoed all the way through in the tetelestai I've mentioned ok what was the scope of that work days completed it's the last forever it's the 9:24 x the fleeting verse of the four verses of seventy prophecy for those of you who have done their homework okay and now father glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was who Wow before the world was glory and eternal paternity passed para so Thalia a Greek any meaning at thy side or in thine own presence and now the word is prepared to return that's his title the word he is going to return to his proper place it's interesting how he says in Hosea 15 I will return to my place until they acknowledge their offense James even quotes from Amos 9 and X and the famous counsel Jerusalem that God will he will return to reestablish the tabernacle of David and so forth so why is he going to return several reasons for the comfort of disciples for our instruction suffering for God as always the highway to glory and that's what he's doing and of course finally to for the benefit of this church of course okay the glory of the father is always paramount well thy son not be son thy son also in union not separate thou hath given you know the thousand these as King James is useful it carries more information than the typical grammar but let's move on here as many as thou hath given that they might know thee finished which thou has given see the glory of the father undergirds every phrase through here and with thee and so forth okay so those are the five verses that we've gone through we praise for himself now he's going to shift to the eleven and is going to talk about them in fact he's going to talk about the security keep those those eleven deliverance keep them from evil or the evil one more precisely and he prays for sanctification and thus activation is the continual experience of believers today and so the name of God is not as more than just a title it's the means by which he revealed is very nature and attributes I have manifested thy name unto men which thou gave us me out of the world designs they were and thou gave us them me and they have kept thy word Wow when did God first start thinking about you when did he first have you on his mind visions one for right on before the foundation of the world he had you on his mind because remember he's outside time I have manifested thy name he says and he that comprehensively and giving chosen before the foundation as I just mentioned and His grace is immutable unchangeable we have an immutable God that's what's so exciting you know you look at the Muslims and they talk about Allah who is capricious unpredictable read that untrustworthy Allah is not a Arabic word for the God of the Old Testament nonsense no not at all it is the opposite kind of guy our God delights in keeping his paralysis and he's immutable unchangeable the god of islam is capricious untrustworthy and we go on about that what's going here and so i benefice i named unto them man which thou gave us me that's not just eleven guys by the way there's probably 500 or so in different scholars would argue different circles but it's more than just the eleven we tend to think to be focus on that he presents his own along with himself all through this and in isaiah aidid particularly would the high priest bears the names of the tribes over his heart and that's where he's bearing us in effect and the men her style is given me not just a leg in the probably over 500 in the estimates of current scholarship and so we are always his your election will be demonstrated by your interest in christ i'm not going to go down that path today we got enough other things to talk about see we turned out to be his reward you may wonder wow that's kind of like why does he want us you know the miracle isn't that he loves this thing whether you weren't more you know a lot of she have sort of wonder why did he bother but he sees it differently we know he will lose nothing he said so back in john 6 if a single one of God's elect were to perish the glory of the perfect servant would be tarnished for all eternity God Jesus is glory hangs on your security boy that's pretty secure my Bible he continues now they have known that all things whatsoever thou has given me are of thee and sensing that's the general observation it's not an absolute obedience there's no notice given here of their failures obviously where times that they did fumble that's swept under the carpet he's given him a blanket report card with an A+ on they received the known and believed talk about intellectual recognition verse seven we're going to see that they received the message in verse eight and they settled conviction that is the deity of Christ verse 8 the commitment of their lives to him also in the next verse and his love imputed lo evil as you notice here so let's look at this verse 8 for I have given unto them the words which thou has given me and they have received them that's a key verse they have received them and have known surely then I came out from thee and they have believed that thou didst send me it's important understand that's it that's the focus I pray for them and this is the verse that this is the verse that just staggers me Jesus I pray for them I pray not for the world Wow but for them which thou has given me for they are thine that's who he's praying for there there are people that we may know is not pay for what am I waiting to talk what'd he say well I'm just saying I pray for them I pray not for the world but for them which thou has given me there are people around that God has not given Christ yeah you're giving Christ he hasn't given them to him for their dying I pray not for the world that's the heavy one he prays not for the unbelieving world in Matthew 10 verse 34 he says I think think not that I come to send peace on earth I cannot send peace but a sword whoa what's all that about mark it down your notes Matthew 10:34 check it out and find out what that really means it may surprise you see the high priest prays only for his own and that's his role today his entire high priest on the cross he did pray for his enemies so don't misunderstand me Father forgive them for they know not what they do it's our duty to pray for the world he didn't but we should that may sound strange they get through and all mine are thine and thine are mine for I and glorified in them is the integration prayer for his glorification with a request for security deliverance and sanctification it's all wrapped up here from verse 1 511 into 20 they are thine that's in contrast with the world 9 equal mine they're equal both ways Empress of the Father sent cannot be separated that's a heavy bit the more we glorify Christ the more intercession we have for us and now I am no more in the world but these are in the world and I come to thee Holy Father keep through thine own name those whom thou has given me that they may be one as we are notice the request that the son is laying on the shoulders of the father I know I am no more in the world but these are in the world and I come to thee Holy Father keep through thine own name those whom thou has given me that they may be one as we are responsibility for your security in mind is here passed on to the Father now when you do a study general security you'll discover your secure because the father your secure because the son are your sealed by the Holy Spirit all free are involved and the Holy Father this is the only occurrence of this title in the scriptures God's holiness is the guarantee that he will keep the Saints from the evil of the world Wow thou has given me he uses that term seven times and one of the things this brings out is the value that Christ sets upon us and the deep interest he has in us it's a hard thing to get across we get so focused on our sinfulness and our need for this underneath that let's just stand back from it and try to embrace how dear we are to him we can't that's one thing my wife has taught me until you really know how much God loves you you're really not effective for him that's a prerequisite to survival is to really discover how much he loves us and that our hesitation in filing as well comes from failing to realize he knows what's better for us than we do once we realize that we should just yield what he has in mind because he he has all the Picard's he knows upcoming he knows what we need he knows what's coming and so forth okay all right God's decrees do not render void the means the use of means the chief means we have is prayer so that's what Jesus isn't leading on here and so while I was with him in the world I kept them in thy name those that thou gave us me I have kept and none of them is lost but the son of perdition that the scripture might be fulfilled widely misunderstood verse let's look at this very carefully I kept it that there's the word kept here's twice but it's two different words two different words for kept at Haroon which from the word of the verb Harrow which means to keep or preserve and ephah luksa which is i guarded emphasizing the sentinel duty over the souls of the eleven of those so given he has lost none in other words he's been effective at his job in securing this is what it's important out to please that's not finished there the son of perdition that's a verb that's a phrase that occurred several times of Scripture it's used of Judas and social use of the Antichrist in 1st Thessalonians it's very strange phrase son of is a he brazen meaning similar in nature and moral character it's a it's a genitive of abolition apparition of a position excuse me and so it's used elsewhere only of the Antichrist it's used of Judas into effect some people try to even make something of that I don't go that far but but notice there's a phrase here none lost but the son of perdition that's a play on words because ippolito means lost and but it gets more complicated none of them is lost but and the word it's not except it's a disjunctive participle which contrasts those belonging to dude if classes in other words Judas didn't lose something he had this is indicating he never had it it's in the grammar he says it clearly in the Greek grammar it doesn't really hit you in the English translation none of them lost but the it none of them is lost he was never found it wasn't like he he was like that he lost something that he had no he never had in the first place that's the point that's their very clearly and yet get me straight you know Andrew Lloyd Webber did the Jesus Christ Superstar a whole musical based on making sure is some kind of hero just it was just uninformed he didn't have a biblical perspective obviously for a lot of reasons about the place so he belong not to them is what the Scriptures hammering here and I'm assuming this audience we don't have a problem with that but you might just note it so if you get troubled by that you know where you go so there are four reasons here for mentioning Judas at all to show there was no failure in discharging the trust which her father had committed him that's what he's trying to do here to assure the disciples of this so that their faith might not be staggered and demonstrate that Christ had not been deceived by Judas he wasn't caught by surprise and so declared God's hand and counsel in it that the scripture might be fulfilled and so forth let's in Tucson not just zone 41 but also Psalm 109 but we've gone here now this all renders an account of his work to the Father he glorified the father on the earth he finished the work that was given him he manifests the father's name he gave him the father's words he kept them as a shepherd would he is indeed the great shepherd and he sent them into the world and he gave all the escaped glory to the Father okay see the final ground of this glorification was not his own personal perfections or his essential one his father from work which he has completed here below and so this is the valid and sure basis for us to take his place now see he's hot out what he's done now it's our job to take his place in certain ways as I have given them the words which thou gave us me why did he give us all words to pass them on that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves you know a miserable Christian is an oxymoron if we understand the situation we should be full of joy kind of overly they are not of the world is even even as I am NOT of the world or that's a challenge for all of us to be in but not out of the world as thou has sent me in the world even so have I sent them into the world and I sanctify myself that they also might be sanctified the glory which thou gavest me I have given them is that there's a real transition laying out here the love wherewith thou has loved me may be in them man we're a long way from that yet our way and now I come to thee and these things I speak in the world that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves my joy fulfilled in themselves see not only would we be secure in eternity he desires his people to be happy here now to enter into this joy the joy fellowship with the father a miserable Christian is an oxymoron that's a your self contradictory phrase if you will okay okay I've given them thy word and the world hath hated them because they are not of the world even as I am NOT of the world did the world hate Christ and crucified him did he promise us anything less no well I've given them thy word indeed each morning the perfect servant waited upon the father for his message for each day when our sheep fed deal and cheaper fed first thing in the morning that's when we should be ourselves see the world world world world the word world in the Greek is cosmos and then I'm always delighted what caused us to bring order out of chaos that's what it actually means in the Greek that's where that's watch the root for the were determined cosmetics in order out of chaos see and thought you carry that away from here that we help you after after okay all right grace has delivered us our lives should condemn the world I hope they do therefore the world hates them it secretly plots against them it in wordly curses them it says all manner of evil against them it opposes that we shouldn't be surprised when we see these things happen it rejoices when any evil befalls them and this includes blogs on the internet that spread lies them to see essentially atoms of the earth crisis from heaven holy blameless separate from sinners ye Jews are from beneath I am from above see the contrast all the way through here we are a new creation according to second Corinthians 5:17 partakers of a heavenly calling our citizen is since it is in heaven not the earth we possess a heavenly inheritance everything we look for is everything utter flee we not inside of it and that's what our Chinese friends call a kingdom perspective they regard the what we call lame they regard that as the kingdom of inheritance where we now are or they call that the kingdom of preparation they believe their responsibility authorities in the woods come derive from the obedience and faithful us here they call it a keen perspective boy how we like that we need that that's that's that's why and I have this book called king upon Lord to tried it to be a handbook how to overcome I pray not that thou should has take them out of the world but that thou should is keep them from the evil one just as evil the King James but when we get that harriman that thou should escape should take them out of the way from the evil one a 2-part narrow it's a from the evil one it's a person it's the title of the devil that's also truly disciples Freddy leaves not information but deliver us from the one is what it really should say and Satan a title of devil that's what it is Satan's the author the world is the bait and the sin is the hook that's the picture you want you got taken out he gets more glory by leading us here that's why we're here and then free of the only prayers not granted to the Saints recorded in Scripture our prayers of Moses Elijah Jonah to be taken out of the world they pay for that didn't get it no service God's purposes here's God's purposes for us to be here and keep them from evil the father should keep this shows that is not within our power to keep ourselves think about that now Jesus asked the father to take care of that we can't take care of it ourselves what's our weapon prayer that's that prayer lead us not in temptation deliver us from the evil one prayers it they are not of the world even as I am NOT of the world in verse 16 we have a different standing in Christ not Adam we have a different nature born of the Spirit not of the flesh we have a different master not of another of the god of this world we have a different aim to glorify God net ourselves see everything about us every dimension every perspective is antithetical to our normal instincts we have a different citizenship a different life a different destiny and it's a grievous inconsistency to even seem to be of the world that's a challenge then you get to the famous 17th first sanctify them through thy truth thy Word is truth and so sigh where's truth the author can't lie shun those who deny any part of God's truth as you were a deadly plague sanctify them high as o to consecrate or set apart thing or person to God sanctification by the father we saw that in Jude 1 by the son in Hebrews 10 by the spirit in 2nd Thessalonians 2 and elsewhere these are all positional they're all absolute they're practical and also progressive every one of them as I was sent me in the world even so have I also sent them into the world and for their sakes I sanctify myself that they also might be sanctified through the truth see Christ has given us his place this place of acceptance on high his place of witness here below we've got both see the 12 were first sent to Israel back there in Matthew 10 and then to the world he prayed well we've seen him now pray for them self and 4:11 now we're going to see him pray for all believers especially in 2 characteristics in unity and in union verse 20 neither pray I for these alone but for them also which shall believe on me through their work this is the verse that extends everything said not just to the 11 or the 500 or whatever but to us we are included now because if we're 20 they shout that shall believe on me I see a show of hands how many are included here about 90% now that's pretty good okay I'm kidding I'm very good alright but for them that shall believe the strengthen the believing ones you see the present tense suggests that the future body of believers has actually existing see from this point they're actually existing back then when he's saying this and that they all may be one that's unity that's what verses 20 and 23 are going to talk about and that they made as they may behold my glory that's union and that's the next couple of verses so we've got 20 through 23 for unity and we have 24 through 26 for the Union that's the same thing let's look at this that they may all be one as thou Fi their art in me and I in thee that they also may be one in us that the world may believe that thou has sent me Wow frankly the more you study this the more you'll be certain that we have no grasp of what that can possibly mean that we will be at one in them like they are each other staggering you have no ability to embrace that my opinion that they all may be one that's used five times in this chapter once for the eleven four times for all believers wow that one plus four makes five and five seems to be the number of grace if you're playing those games but let's move on here they also may be one in us this is not a union of believers but rather a spirit of unity among believers and four times it says that they may keep on being one and so and the him therein he in the Greek is neuter singular that's not physically mean but required but it would have required a mask over there this is a unity of spirit and the glory which thou gave us me I have given them that they may be one even as we are one I am them and thou in me that they may be made perfect in one that the world may know that thou has sent me and that has loved them as thou hast loved me well I'll elated wait a minute that the world may know that thou has sent me and has to love them as thou hast loved me I suggest that you and I have no capacity to grasp that how much the father must love us this is a staggering statement she the words in this whole chapter for words but the concepts is embracing here go beyond our capacity to appropriate okay so he Preity talked about prayer in unity let's move on to Union in the last few verses here father I will that they also whom thou has given me be with me where I am that they may behold my glory that thou has given me for thou lovest me before the foundation of the world of course Wow and we're going to be with him I think John got a glimpse of that when he was on Patmos this is the climax this is the heart of the heavenly bridegroom that they also whom thou has given me be with me where I am it's interesting to realize that Jesus has a yearning we tend to see Jesus is all-powerful doing the will of the Father we see him as God incarnate as we go through the Gospels in various ways we see him resourceful beyond our imagining even to the conquest of death it's perhaps a surprise to realize that Jesus has a yearning I think that's interesting and what is his yearning what is his passion what is his desire to have us with him Wow it's interesting how affection what is represented by desiring the person to be with you you think that we didn't like it with a Sox or something that's his yearning for us I certainly can't explain there's a lot of things I can't explain that's certainly at the head of the list a righteous father though the world has not known thee but I have known thee and these have known that thou has sent me no righteous Fozzy Christ left the world without his intercession he turned it over to the Justice of the Father Wow none of us want justice none of us want righteousness that would condemn us praise God we want grace we're God's righteousness is imputed to us the world doesn't have that he's turned the world over to the justice of the father that's terrifying that should echo in your thoughts the great white throne not the Bema seat great white throne the righteous the father's righteous forbids him to abandon the Saints to the evil of the world that's it Wow that's right on right on and I've declared unto them thy name and will declare it that the love wherewith thou has loved me may be in them and I in them Wow that's the father we all know the Holy Spirit inglot's us we don't think of the father in glowing effeminate but you can build it on that version the believer has the same life as Christ the believer has the same security as Christ the believer has the same separation as Christ for the world he has the same sending into the world as Christ did he has the same union as Christ that's what was a burst plane one was about he has the same glorious Christ in a sense yes it's a reflected glory obviously and the same beloved is Christ man that's a package for seven unless that's probably not right okay okay so we've we've gone through superficially John 17 and but I hope I'm hopeful that with this warm-up you can at a time the spirit draws you jump into John 17 and just read it and try there's no words there that aren't obvious but the concepts that are there are absolutely rustic and you can't come out of a an immersion in John 17 unchanged and you want to put John 17 and romans 8 together and you've got a package to carry with you anywhere you go so for the next session you can prepare that by studying John chapter 18 we're heading into the heavy stuff now and eighteen and nineteen Boyd said the big stuff I want you particularly as you jump into 18 we're going to be in Gethsemane you've been on the way gues enemy 18 we'll put us in because 70 there's going to be the arrest I want you to figure out notice carefully who's really in charge and I also want you to be sensitive to the six trials that Jesus is going to go through three Jewish ones and three Roman ones and every detail I think I'll defy you to make a list of the things that are illegal every day we'll go through that you don't have to do that in anticipation but just be be sensitive to the six trials three three Jewish and three Roman and every detail illegal so with that let's bow our hearts for our word of Prayer
