come peace your shame is undone Jesus claimed victory from the clutches of death heaven erupted in joyful song hosanna in the highest the Angels took flight announcing the presence of our Saint here the message became flesh grace and forgiveness came for you and Kermie [Music] [Music] [Music] on earth endure the world give back the song which now be here just see [Applause] [Music] we'll Merry Christmas welcome to Cornerstone would you stand at your feet with us this night we come and we celebrate the birth of a team that came to this earth and changed it forever let's see those hands like you into this place if you're guests with us for the first time or you call this place your home we're so grateful that you chose to spend an hour with us out of your Christmas season here at Cornerstone you know it's been our prayer leading up to all these services that every seat in this room and in our overflow room that every person this steps into this place which see they would hear and they would feel the love of Jesus in a real way as we tell his story but this isn't just any story you see we come together every Christmas and we sing these familiar songs and it's so easy to miss one of the most important parts of the story and that's you you see this this Jesus left everything that he knew and he came and he was born in a manger and he left the world forever changed but he came because of you right where you are and he came for you right where you are and so it's our hope it's our prayer that here in this services we continue to worship as we continue to sing but that truth wouldn't pass you by but you would see and encounter Jesus in a real way in this place [Music] stars of leash is the see [Music] earth [Music] here in the sewer [Music] [Applause] choices [Music] Oh Oh see [Music] it's hard to [Music] Oh [Music] Oh [Music] hey Merry Christmas everybody we're so glad you're here you can have a seat happy Christmas Eve we are just hours away from Christmas and we're so excited that you would take an hour come hang out with us this Christmas Eve and come celebrate our Lord and Savior Jesus coming to this earth we hope you have an incredible experience tonight with you and your friends and your family while you're on campus couple quick things first if you are visiting Cornerstone this weekend if this is a chance for you to come and check coming to Cornerstone this weekend so here's what we've done we've actually partnered with an organization in India called harvest India and because you're visiting today for every single guest we have Cornerstone is going to collect some money and we are gonna donate five dollars to this organization with your name on it they bring clean water wells to villages and towns all over India that don't have access to it and so thank you for being here that's our way of just saying hi to you and honoring you and thanking you for checking out Cornerstone as you walked in you got a program you could pull there's a perforated card says connect card on there you could rip that off you can fill it out during the service there's also one in the seatback right in front of you when you leave tonight if you go out to the lobby over to the left there's some big TVs that say new here start here and if you hand them that card they're gonna give you a small gift and that's our way of knowing you were here and being able to make that donation on your behalf we also want to let you know we're starting a brand new series in three weeks January's right around the corner and we just know it's that time of year where all of us start thinking about our goals and our habits and everything that we're going through in our life our career our families here's what we're gonna do we're gonna do something a little different we're gonna look at scripture where God actually tells us that real life is found when we live outside of ourselves we learn to be selfless and we learn to come in touch with the needs of those around us 59 times the scripture God tells us to do something for one another and so we're gonna be walking through that together we hope you'll join us we believe it's going to be a great kickoff to a new year we believe it's gonna help us have a strong 2020 and we hope we'll see there in just a few weeks I wanted to some real quick Tim is back there Tim view backstage you grab him I'm like yeah sure what's up they had a couple things one they want to know why'd your mom dress you today that was question one from I saw them not me the second thing they said is this is that no seriously they said you sound and sing like a baby angel but they said the songs just felt like a little bit more like stuff for their moms and dads they won't know if you guys have we're so glad to hear you can have a seat here's what I'm gonna do right now pastor Lynn's gonna be out in just a minute he's got an incredible Christmas message to share with all of us today we hope it's a blessing to you we're gonna receive our offering and while you all are still talking and drying off some others are gonna come we're gonna pass some buckets through the room if you're visiting today please feel no obligation to give this is our moment as followers of Jesus that we give to God and we partner with what he's doing in this city to help families all around the East Valley find hope and faith in Jesus and so I'm gonna pray right now a couple of videos are gonna play and then pastor Lin will be right out let's pray together God we love you and we thank you for the chance to come and just celebrate Jesus in this room god we pray that this Christmas we would be reminded God that our spirits our souls would just be refreshing we would remember your love for us and what you've done to send your son Jesus to this earth that he would give his life for us and we're so grateful God and we just pray that you'll speak to us now we ask this in Jesus name Amen [Music] [Music] everyone's talking about being more self-aware be your best selves live your best life you do you there's a lot to talk about ourselves but the more we focus on ourselves the worse we end up feeling about well ourselves this year what if we turned it around what if instead of goals centered around our own weight loss habits careers and money we made others the priority what if we made it about one another what if we learned a new way of thinking not a way to think less of ourselves just to think of ourselves less [Music] [Music] Joseph also went up to the tosser into G ADA to Bethlehem the town of David the town down deep for the baby to be bald and she gave birth to her firstborn a son and placed him in the manger guys there was no room for them and there were Shepherds living out in the fields nearby keeping watch over their flocks at night I enjoyed the Lord a pure tubule fill the glory of the Lord shown but the angel said she won't do that I bring you good news today in the town of David a savior has been born to you he's the Messiah for more this will be assigned to you you'll find a baby wrapped in cloths lying and later it hurried off to find Mary shows up and I've added your daddy in the matter when they had seen him they spread the word concerning that had been told to them and all who heard it were amazed of what the Shepherd's said to them hey cornerstone hey merry Christmas to you hey when you walked in we tried really really hard to make sure that everybody got a card like this if you didn't get a card if you I think if you look in the seat back in front of you there's a couple extras there you can grab one if you still don't have one if you would just raise your hand we've got semesters they'll come by they'll give you a card you're gonna want a card one of these cards has a million no I'm teasing that's just but you are gonna want a card okay so just be sure keep your hand up till they get it to you and be straight be sure that you get a card on the deal so here's the thing we just watched some kids tell the Christmas story and the reality is you know the Christmas story right you've heard the Christmas story hundreds of times a lot of us in this room probably almost word-for-word could tell the Christmas story we wouldn't be nearly as cute as the children but we could tell it right little side note we actually tried to have some puppies till the Christmas story their union was really hard to work with we had to give up on that here's the deal I know we know the Christmas story I wonder if we've really stopped and paused and said so what's happening at the Christmas Story what it what is the Christmas story about I mean think about this there there are stars leading there are angels singing there are shepherds amazing there are wise men following their kings raging and then in the midst of all of that God shows up wearing a pair of diapers it's the Christmas story and in the midst of all of that do you ever stop to wonder well what was God thinking what was that about because here's the deal look God has never done anything by mistake you understand there was a plan to all the moving pieces all the chaos that was going on in that moment God had a plan God was doing something in the moment and here's the answer to what Christmas was all about Christmas was God sending you and me a message that's what he was doing and all the stars and Shepherds and angel sing all of that was God's neon sign his way of saying hey look look look flash flash flash this is important you need to open the letter you need to read the message that I'm sending to you at Christmas time because because because you ready because an unopened letter an unread message is worthless it does absolutely no good if you never open it I know this because several months ago I received a letter from my homeowners association I decided not to open the letter now before you go okay you are an idiot and who let you preach you need to understand the reason that I didn't open it and read it my logic was I get the same letter every quarter and it's a letter that says hey you're you know association fees are coming too I've got my association fees on autopay so they're automatically sent out every single time why read the letter so I toss the letter without opening it I soon discovered not reading your mail can be really expensive I wonder what happens I wonder how expensive it is if you and I don't ever open the message that God attempted to send us 2,000 years ago at Christmas how much would that cost here we go grab your Bibles if you brought them if you didn't it's okay we're gonna put the words up on the screen in just a minute but if you did bring your Bibles turn with me to the book of John and here's why we're going to the book of John because John is gonna let us speak in the envelope John's gonna tell us what the letter said ahead of time so that you and I can decide whether or not we want to open it for ourselves okay so it's John chapter 3 if you're not familiar if you go to the back of your Bibles start working to the left you're gonna find this book of John John chapter 3 starting in verse 16 for some of you it's gonna be familiar for some of you it's gonna be a first-time John chapter 3 verse 16 this is what was in the message that God attempted to send to you and me 2000 years ago at Christmas here's what it said ready for God so loved the world it's interesting to me that John when he got to the word love felt compelled to say to you me guys guys guys God so love this is an ordinary love this isn't usual love this isn't what you've experienced up until now this is not conditional love this is something wildly wildly bigger than you ever imagined think weird for this God so so so loved think teenage daughter dad this is so so so important and John is saying to you and me this is so so so big this love that God had I've got a dear friend his name is Neil and Neil said to me one day said Neil in I think I've got a little bit of a sense of what John 3:16 is about when it says God so loved said I feel that way because I had a friend when I was a kid that I loved with all of my heart I mean I loved my friends so much my heart ached every time we were apart and then he told me this story he said every single day when I was five I would go out in front of my house and I would stand on my sidewalk I would look down the street because my friend Toby lived two houses down and I would stand there and wait and I'd watch for his front door to just barely open and when his front door would go open I would scream at the top of my lungs Toby and Toby hearing me yell would yell back Neil and then we would start running toward each other and when we got to each other we would throw ours or Toby oh you would have thought we hadn't seen each other in a hundred years the truth is we played with each other yesterday but he said you need to know that that that period of time from when we went home until it us to be apart because we just loved each other so much he said we would play and we would play and we would play we would play and the hours would melt away as if there were seconds and then mom or dad would come out and say hey it's time come in for dinner he said Lin it felt like torture it felt like torture to eat supper it felt like torture to watch the evening TV shows it felt like torture to get ready for bed to take my evening time bath because Toby wasn't there so the next morning I would I would wake up I'd go right out to that same little spot on the sidewalk and I would stand there waiting my little heart pounding waiting for that door to crack open again and when it did Toby Neil and it would just happen all over again he said Len I think that's how God loves us that his heart aches when we're not together and that he just loves us and in a way that has no restriction or hesitation if you're a parent you've had a glimpse of this because you've watched your child you watch your child before they were disappointed by somebody else's rejection you watched your child before walls went up because they found life and people to be unfair and in that young innocence you watch them give the total of their heart with absolute freedom and without hesitation for what might happen and when you saw that you saw a glimpse of what John was trying to describe when he said God so so so loved the world you me us think about that what does it mean to you that the God of the universe would say I have so so so loved you I have turned my heart towards you and there is not one ounce of hesitation there's not one condition upon my love you don't have to perform anything for my love every one of your faults is accepted in my love what does it mean that Christmas was a love letter to you back to the passage for God so so loved you and me that He gave His one and only Son Jesus I think about this a minute you realized that God actually gave Jesus twice he gave Jesus the first time at Christmas which is what we're celebrating right now right he sent his son from heaven to come into the world born a human baby think how helpless a human being why would God ever go through the humiliation of being born one of us so that he could relate to us so that you and I could relate to you can you imagine if God to come and been 70 foot tall and glowed in the dark you know we would have said God you don't understand you don't you don't get what it means to be frail like me you don't get what it means to be tempted by me you don't get what it means to be angry like I am and because Jesus came as one of us the conversation completely changes he says no no no I understand and he spins you ready for this the next 33 years trying to convince you and me to open the message that there's a God who loves you so desperately and once your life to experience freedom and wholeness and he preached time and time again don't miss the love letter that God has sent to you there's a second time God gave his son he sent him to a cross he sent his son to a cross to die to die for everything that is dark and broken about you and me and restore it for us I think military families might get the gravity of this think about this to send your son or your daughter to a foreign country to fight for people that you've never met to be there for months maybe even years in order through their blood and sweat to purchase freedom for people who may never even appreciate what your family sacrificed for them but imagine that it goes all the way to the ultimate sacrifice imagine that it goes to the point where your son or daughter never comes home because they died purchasing the freedom for those people that you have never seen and never met and will never know or understand what you gave and guys you realize that's exactly what God did by giving his son twice that little baby that we're about to celebrate in a manger is on a mission to a cross and God knew he would die on the mission and sent him anyways think think think about the direction of the conversation right think think you realize this is this is Jesus leaving heaven coming to earth your eyes the direction is toward us right God didn't say to you and me hey you come to me and then we'll forgive you go to church often enough or you follow some rules that I got are you join the right club instead God came toward us he pursued us chased us hoping to deliver the message you know it's interesting we get freaked out by pursuit all right I mean something comes running toward us our first instinct is hey whatever that is it's got to be bad right you're coming toward me you're probably planning to hurt me it's why when we get to a used car lot and the salesman comes we flee right you just cannot be good it's just human instinct so I'm 7 years old and you need to understand about the story I'm about to tell that I have no responsibility in the story I was a victim in the story I just want to say that out loud I was pursued so here's what happened I'm seven years old I'm sitting in class I feel a tap on my shoulder I turn around the kid in the seat behind me hands me a note the note says this is Renee I love you do you love me mark the Box now I'm just telling you if you're a seven year old male this is horrifying why would a girl ever do this to a boy this is horrible so I immediately crumbled the note up into my hand as tight as I could looked around to make sure that nobody saw that I actually received the note waited till the teacher told us it was okay to go out for a recess I very discreetly held the note on my hip and then deposited it in the trashcan and as I headed for the door imagine my absolute horror as I got through the doorway to find Renee on the other side waiting for me she came toward me and I did exactly what any seven-year-old male I ran for my life she spent the next 30 minutes of recess chasing me around the playground she ruined recess and the whole time I was here going oh no oh no if she catches me when she catches me what'd she do to me she'll probably kiss me and if she kisses me that I'm gonna have to marry her and I'm just not ready for that much commitment I'm seven I can't do it fast forward I'm a freshman in high school Renee is in one of my classes at high school Renee growed up and Renee growed up good know what I'm saying and all of a sudden I'm going hey but here's the frost she's so out of my league I think there is no chance and now I'm sitting there as a freshman in high school going she was chasing me and I think back to my seven-year-old self and I go you're an idiot and every part of you wanted to go back to seven year old me and say dude let her catch you you need to know that the Christmas story is a story of pursuit of God coming toward you and every person in this room who has ever been caught by Jesus Christ would say to every person in this room who is currently running from Jesus Christ let him catch you it's the best thing that could happen to you back to the passage for God so so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting eternal life believes now you get when the Bible says believes this isn't I believe in Charlie Brown belief right when the Bible talks about belief it's talking about real belief I'm in belief I will live for that belief where do I sign belief believes what believes that Jesus was Saviour remember what the Angels said to the Shepherd's Christmas night for unto you Is Born This Day in the City of David a saviour was his mission a savior who saves from what who saves me from my darkness saves me from my moments of anger when I lashed out at the people around me trying to make them feel a little bit worse so that I could feel a little bit better saves me saves me from those words that fell so easily off my lips like melted butter but became acid when they touched the soul of the person I was gossiping about saved me saved me from my unforgiveness as I rooted for the person who had hurt me to be equally hurt and maybe just a little more saved save me from those evenings after everybody else had gone to bed surfing the internet and looking at things that I shouldn't look at save me save me from that moment I took the truth and I twisted it just enough so that I would have the advantage and you would have the disadvantage I win a savior savior from my darkness a savior from my sin you know who opens this you know who says man I I need the message the love letter that God sent me at Christmas time you know who has no problem receiving this one broken people broken people people who had for whatever reason in their journey of life whether it was through marriage or career what do i do i wella have come to a point that says when i'm in charge of me it's not good for me when i'm the one making the calls they usually turn out not so good and unfortunately the people around me who I most care about suffer along with me when I'm in charge of me you know opens this letter broken people matter of fact we've got the story of a guy who did exactly that who said hey I don't want anything to do with God I'm good enough by myself I'm gonna run my life myself until he got to the ditch and then he said man I need a Savior and his stories right here my name is Ryan King I grew up in a nice house kind of a suburban setting my mom she was a successful school teacher my dad he was a successful lawyer with multiple offices from the outside looking in it looked like we were living the all-american dream but on the inside it was a whole nother story so when I was 14 years old we found out that my dad was living a double life he was having an affair with his secretary he had been living this double life for years because of my teenage immaturity and my anger towards my dad I started rebelling I got in with a rowdy group of friends and we will go out we would do destructive things we would destroy property we started drinking alcohol we started smoking cigarettes when I graduated high school the world to sand was open even more after I moved up to Flagstaff Arizona I realized that all of my sin pain regrets anger and sorrow would just come right with me it was there where I began drinking heavily I drink and smoke until I passed out I hit the lowest point of my life I walked outside and I started looking off into the distance I was so numb to life that I was just sitting there and the snow started piling on my arms and on my knees I really started thinking about life I started wondering is this the meaning of life is there a purpose for my life but it was at that moment where I knew that I needed God and I would start looking up YouTube videos about heaven about Hell about Jesus about God I started hearing these testimonies from people who went through similar things that I went through they ended up living totally new amazing lives with Jesus Christ and I got on my knees and it was at that moment where I experienced this heavy weight lifted off of my shoulders I began reading the Bible all the questions that I had life or being answered by the Bible by the Word of God I began to see that there was a difference between Jesus and religion and I realized that my salvation is not based on my works or what I do but it's all about what Jesus Christ and what he did on the cross and that's where I began reaching out to the homeless we administer to pimps prostitutes ex-cons and gangbangers I wrote a letter to my dad and I told him that I had forgiven him because Christ forgave me and I asked for forgiveness as well for all of the things that I did and I was able to forgive all of the people that have hurt me in the past because of the forgiveness that I received through Jesus Christ he has filled all the voids in my heart he has given me peace love joy contentment he's given me a plan and a purpose I know that now that no matter what happens I'm gonna be okay because I have Jesus Christ he is here he's real and he loves me remember I said broken people have no problem opening the love letter that God sent them at Christmas the idea that they need a Savior because they've caught on do you hate me and charge of me is not a good idea for me you know who really struggles to open the Christmas letter the message that God sent you and me okay people see okay people go well I think I'm okay I mean I just don't even really get why I would need God's help or assistance he'd probably screw up my okay my career seems to be going pretty good my marriage I you know we're pretty happy I don't have kids doing drugs I think I'm okay you know why you can say you're okay because you have never tasted the freedom and the life that Jesus offers and you have nothing to compare you're okay to because if you did you would know you're not okay imagine this imagine if you were born in prison you were born in prison you grew up in prison you'd never know anything other life than being in prison and now you're an adult and someone comes and says hey you realize there's a whole wait there's a whole life outside of these prison walls I can get you there and you and that moment said why I'm just not sure I think I'm okay you know I've got my own little 9x6 area that's my own and the prison guards are sneaking a contraband I got a little store going I'm making some money all of my friends all my friends are in prison I think I'm okay you'd say that because you'd never experience life outside the walls that's why you would think it was okay to be okay remember I told you that I didn't open the letter from my homeowners association a couple months later I actually did get a second letter this time from the management company for my homeowners association and I did open that letter imagine my surprise when I opened that letter and found a rather sizable reimbursement check I then read that letter which said apparently you didn't open the first letter because if you had you would know that your homeowners association no longer contracts with us as the management company so the last three quarters of payments you've sent to us have not gone to your bill we are now refunding them to you a couple days later I got a another letter this one from the new management company who said since you have not paid your bill for three quarters we have now contracted a lawyer and there's a lien against your house I found out that it costs a thousand dollars not to open your mail I wonder how expensive it is to not open the message that God sent to you and me 2,000 years ago at Christmas what would it cost you and me to just discard it let's do this just you and me let's just do a moment of honest spiritual assessment one-on-one there's a couple thousand people in the room but you and me okay just you and me how confident are you that you've opened the letter already and if you're hearing you go Lin you no no no no Lin I've done I guarantee you I came to a point where I realized me being in charge of me was not a good idea for me man I'm just telling you I knew I needed a savior and so I prayed that prayer I prayed the prayer I asked Jesus to come into my life and I'm just telling you Lin I am a hundred percent confident that I have opened God's love letter and it's a done deal for me and if you're confident of that then just go ahead and open the letter now if you've got any doubt at all then wait don't open it yet but if you say Nolan I know that I know that I know that I've opened you know that I've opened the letter that's a pretty cool sound [Music] okay here's one that asked us to do I'm gonna ask we're getting ready to go home we're gonna be with her family in front of a Christmas tree for the next couple days would you take the letter stick it on the branches of the tree so that as you're there with family and you're mingling with friends and you're opening gifts there'll be those moments that you look over at the tree and you see the letter and for those of us that the letter is open that you and I in that moment could just for a moment have absolute gratitude in our hearts for a God who 2,000 years ago sent you a love letter in the form of his son who gave you a savior to fix all that was dark and broken in you Christmas would feel a little different if we remembered that really well for all of us that still have sealed letters we'll take them home you put them in the tree and over the next few days you look at the letter it's they're still sealed I want you to ask yourself this question is that my final answer is that my final intention for the love letter that God gave me to leave it unopened and unresponded to just think about that for the next few days there's some of us in the room right now and you're gonna wiggle in I don't want to go home with a seal better see I get it I get that me in charge of me is not necessarily a great idea for me I get that Jesus came to be a savior and save me from the dark parts of me from my sin and I'm ready for that and here's the really really cool part if that's where your heart is right now remember what the passage said for those who believe remember that and the reality is guys all that is is a prayer of belief away it's you and I praying and saying and declaring to God God I believe this I believe this and I receive this I believe that Jesus came I believe that he came to be my Savior and I'm ready to receive the love letter so let's do that let's do that right now and let's just take a moment we'll all bow our heads and close our eyes and if you're someone here who says hey you know what it's time for me to open my letter then you can pray this prayer with me so Luke will bow our heads I'll pray a prayer you can just pray it quietly with me in your seat okay that prayer would goes something like this dear God thank you thank you for loving me so so so much that you sent your son you sent your son to find me you sent your son to chase me but most of all you sent your son to save me and I'm just asking you right now I'm asking you to take me because when I'm in charge of me it's not good for me and I'm asking you right now to save me from all that is dark all the hearts that I broken all the decisions that I shaken my fist in anger for all the moments I said to you God I don't need you forgive me for my sin and I'm asking Jesus to be my Saviour this I pray in Jesus name Amen okay if you just prayed that prayer with me you realize you just received your mail right you just opened the envelope you received God's love letter that he wrote to you and me 2,000 years ago so here's what we need to do go ahead and open the letter open it up just to open it up and then once you've opened it lift it up I got mail look at that all over the room how cool is that I got mail very very cool here's gonna say to you best decision you could ever make a Christmas time next steps get yourself into a Bible believing Church if it's not this one find another one but find one that teaches the Bible and will tell you the truth and then go attend faithfully while you figure out this new life in Christ okay next step also want to ask if you prayed that prayer in the seatback right in front of you there's a card that just simply says I said yes I think you've got one inside your weekly - if you open up your weekly I said yes would you take a moment I'm being sir please please do this take a moment fill it it'd take you 15 seconds to fill it out okay I'm asking you in just a few moments we're gonna when we get ready to leave if you look at every single one the exits there's a banner that says YES on it you take that card you drop it off at the banner here's my promise we're not gonna sell your information to target not gonna here's why we're asking we're asking because it's gonna give us a chance to pray for you and it's gonna give us a chance to know that you made a decision and it's gonna thrill our hearts to know that okay so fill it out drop it off at the tables in just a minute when we get ready to leave what's gonna happen to the service I think may actually be the most powerful moment in the service you're gonna want to be part of this [Music] did you catch it Christmas it's all about the love of God coming to earth in a new way through the little baby Jesus in order to make a new way for you and I to come back into relationship with God you see the one true God of heaven he has been in pursuit of you since the very beginning and he knows he knows everything that you've ever done and he knows what's heavy on your heart maybe even what you've never shared with someone else you see what happened at the manger Jesus coming it really happened and it changed everything you see shepherds they were these ordinary men on an ordinary day when this unexpected message came to them and they chose to pay attention but they also chose to investigate the message for themselves and you know what they found what they found is that Jesus was there Jesus was real and Jesus is Lord I don't want us to leave here tonight without remembering and pondering how true this Christmas story is how real the message of Christmas is if you would just open your heart and faith of I want to believe help me believe God so let's do this let's ponder together what was it like when heaven touched earth that very first Christmas can you see it can you fathom it can you experience the depth of love when something so ordinary a mother her husband and a fresh newborn baby who came with a message of love and hope and restoration would you experience the wonder
