could be fresh for one another all right okay way you know I brushed my teeth right before the show every time had you felt otherwise I just think you could do with some freshes okay uh and then also I was really Pleasant surprised right before you enter the last thing in here where you come into the thing and then you come out here yeah there's a picture of me that's right and I'll tell you something I was looking at that picture of you this morning that makes me feel really good you know why I was looking at because back then in that picture you dressed you had you wore like jeans and you would wear like an Oxford shirt and lately your dressing has become more and more outlandish yeah how why is too many mushrooms is it mushrooms are we Bing the mushrooms for this yeah no I think it maybe it's just uh it's a comfort thing MH you know yeah it's La a different kind of mode of of dressing you love you love these unusual outfits I like to have a good time you know life is too hard you just kind of want to if it's going to make you giggle and you put on some funky linen pants yeah no I mean you pull it simp I would be destroyed by my friends if I wor anything even resembling that I think you look great well thank you but I'm dressed like my dad you know um this is uh I do want to talk about your some of your outfits because this is your Premiere your Poolman Premiere and this is basically this is the character now yeah so that's that's uh Darren no yeah that's Darren but the car is like a 1987 Mitsubishi it's a very tiny tiny uh van mhm um that's my personal t-shirt that's also in the film this is something you own this yeah yeah I love L shirt how long have you had that shirt like 19 years and then and I'm from La too it just shows you my my passion for those are my corduroy shorts that were like $5 but I've spent about $150 trying to repair them as they broken over the years oh they're a favorite pair yeah that is not my movie theater unfortunately that is not your movie theater and then we have a picture that um uh you posed for with the guy at Langer Deli and this is now this is interesting that's Norm this is how you regularly dress yeah it's almost summer you know I don't know those are my you know like I'm a big fan of Tom celic and as we know Tom celic liked a short short yeah sure he did yeah there's a little bit of Hooters waitress going on here too me or Norm Norm for sure uh but yeah that's langers that's a lot of people are from out of town I hear in the audience but langers is a a a world famous in LA famous delicate many people say the best pami in the whole United States number 19 it's unbelievable yeah you you love it oh it's unbelievable better than New York people say many say it's better than New York I don't want to get into a state versus State I you loved la I love La that said I love La I do I do I don't want to get because I may be a cats in New York I want to get a pastrami sandwich I see you they're both great pami sandwich eat wherever you go exactly now that look I don't know if you know this but you're a bit of an influencer because it's really catching on in fact I've seen people all over town where that's that's where he is that's that's incredible yeah just two big boys thanks thank you man I really appreciate you anytime thank you for doing this for anytime we should go get a pami sandwich have to would you like to yeah yeah you have some Altoids and a pami sandwich it' be great bye GMA all right bye see you man see you'll be over there bye no he's just going to stand out okay that's where he was you asked me where that a security man working hard that's right working under cover working under cover you did a great job with this movie by the way the characters are Delight absolutely delightful including your character Danny DeVito Annette Benning how much of this besides the outfits are drawn from your own personal life living growing up pretty much everything you know they say uh right about what you know so I wrote about LA and I included a lot of stuff in there that I like like restaurants I like and uh buildings that either are still around or or aren't and I wish we're still around and um a lot of stuff that cars around in my brain uh uh so yeah and so Jack uh denisof is the character that Danny DeVito plays and his wife uh Diana Spenard who's played by n Benning they run this this Motel this this apartment complex that was a motel and he plays uh a bovie horror director from the 80s that's waiting for his agent to call him back and and his wife is a therapist but she used to be an actress but she's become a therapist because she had to make money because Jack's never making any money um this is based all on your own parents yeah this is based definitely on like the the the kind of the the world that I grew up in I mean Diane that who inette plays is based on my high school English teacher um and then Jack there's a scene in in the film that's it's a long scene it doesn't really have anything to do with the plot but I found it uh I found it funny and uh it's about uh Jack Denny explaining the situation with this Japanese restaurant that was not cooking him food but just giving him the bits and pieces so he could make it at home mhm and it's a long winding story with absolutely no end and it it came from this moment over quarantine where I was sitting with my dad my dad has want to do these kind of very just palacial stories they just on and on and he's talking about that's a really nice word to use to describe them palacial palacial yeah palacial is an excellent way many right my father has palacial stories about his um knee surgeries and yeah very palacial stories about the um cinder block wall they've been building in their backyard for the last 11 years absolutely poal absolutely palatial so that just you know that did your dad recognize that that was one of his palacial stories I'm pretty sure he forgot the story he cuz your dad has a small part in the movie he does he plays uh he plays a lizard he plays a lizard you'll have to see the film for to make any sort of sense all well we're going to take a break more when we come back with Chris Pine his movie is called pool man we'll be right back we're back with Chris Pine his movie is called pool man it opens at theaters tomorrow which is exciting for you you wrote it you directed it you're in it you got all you got all your actors Etc your dad plays a lizard as you mentioned you It's Your Love Letter to La I do want to ask you one thing because I was trying to figure out while I was watching the movie is that it seems to be set I was guessing when I was started watching in 1982 maybe but then you start talking about the movie Aaron Brockovich and I'm like well that wasn't 1982 and then the cars are kind and then you know there were CDs and those weren't there did you just go I don't care about that ultimately I mean I have I have a smarter answer for that and it works but ultimately because I think my character Darren he's like a 43y old boy man and I think the the film is basically like an imaginative expression of his his inner world it's like it's it's as if he' created the film and I think he basically stopped emotionally growing in about 1988 so the thing has like and it's very much for me I have like a romantic sense of that time because it's where you know movies were big and I don't know life felt uh romantic and and and bigger so that's part of it and then also I don't like really think cell phones on in movies are romantic and sexy and uh that kind of thing what were you up to when you were like 17 years old living here in LA I was smoking pot on mohand uh-huh really on mohand huh yeah you well I was quite I'm quite a bit older than you I was working at krock um when at that time when you were on the I was working here in LA on the radio with Kevin at 17 not at 17 when you were 17 no I remember I remember listening to you uh no when I was 17 I don't know you know throwing rocks over the brick wall in the backyard that kind of stuff drinking hot beers out of the trunk of my Isuzu IM Mark you know like buying a 15 pack of stros and Co yeah getting the pellet me and my friend Tommy eating a a 6foot sub just the two of us to see if you could do it yeah and we did it you did yeah yeah a lot yeah so you 17 years old so you were like this is like thirde eyye blind era type of thing yeah 17 would have been lot Sublime uhhuh right Nirvana definitely still in that phase that was hip-hop so there was a lot of like wuang a lot of tribe uh but yeah so I'd say m Holland for pot I I was never really a good pot smoker but I I really wanted to be uhhuh really really wanted to be and then uh and then Universal CityWalk was a big thing oh yeah because that was like Universal City walk it just opened up and that's not Universal Studios there's a thing attached with a bunch of movie The it's a mall out front of the it's a mall it's a Dr Mall yeah so they were to smoke uh more pot yeah and then uh well hold on I want to see if I can if I yeah what else did you drive around yeah driving around yeah driving around it's always good uh trying to steal stop signs did you really yeah did you get one I got one how'd you get it I don't know why why is that such a big deal for like I had a whole thing I wanted to get like a stop sign and put it up in my room yeah there's something about that you have that thing we didn't have one um but I wasn't strong enough to get one but um yeah no I could see why you'd want that yeah I don't know and then signs that like funny street names you know like I always whenever I drive by a street like that I think oh somebody's going to steal outside for sure I have a Pine Street thing in my house that I didn't steal but a friend of mine gave to me from Seattle from from Seattle yeah that's like a famous street up in Seattle I had no idea we'll get you one don't worry wow you um you went to the city council meeting your character went to City Council meetings did you go to the real City Council meetings what was up yeah it's crazy it is crazy right the craziest thing about about it is that uh they have and I may be wrong about the amount of time but if someone wants to talk no matter how crazy or delusional they have got to let the person see least like five minutes or two and a half minutes they have a time limit they have a time they can't stop them they get to speak and do what do whatever they want and that's all you get there is crazy people that's a lot that and a lot of people searching for like free IC tea and air conditioning yeah it's it is one of those things you think it's cool to run for city council you realize just basically like in a mental institution for from 9:00 in the morning until 4:00 every single day I can't imagine I can't imagine doing it you shot a uh a funny uh like fake commercial to promote the movie I want to run bit of that I'm Darren Burman owner and pool man in awesome Aquatics let's go I treat your pool like my own because I love what I do from Reading complicated dials and
