[Music] life everything in life it could be a tragedy that makes you go to the next level of your playing or it could be just you in search of being better every day that should make you practice [Music] as a drummer you supposed to know where the beat is all the time where the pulse is as a bass player you posing over the pulses as a guitar player you posing over the pulses so if someone switches their pulse that has nothing to do with your pulse you should stay the same a lot of people think about it a lot I just choose not to think about it anymore I wanted to get to a point where I didn't have to count because I'm absolutely sure where the beat is and that came through practice [Music] [Music] [Music] no offense to the University with that it really helped me to teachers at Howard that helped me and I was playing with Grady tape and playing with Jerry Allen so once I got with her in the in the jazz modern type of thing everything was odd time you know sight reading or reading on stage in front of people so that kind of challenge was good for you know just for studying music learning music stuff like that but I mean we all kind of grew up transcribing solos listening to records trying to play them you know normal shedding things [Music] [Music] you open the book and then you practice all your rudiments and if you can do all the rudiments your first time then you you're like right under God and Jesus and if you can't which most of us can't then that's what you keep working on you know this is always gonna go back to practice it's never a shortcut there's no other part of it you know it's no pill you could take no secret juice you just have to sit in there and cry throw your drums throw your sticks kick the wall all that stuff because that's why other drummers that are good appreciate other drummers that are good because you all know what you went through to get to that point so if you want a quick fix or easy way or something like that then I don't really know what to tell you [Music] [Applause] [Music] just depend on the day the mood the room the people in the audience is you know solve variables you know cuz you could go through something one day so you might be a little more aggressive that day than if you have a really happy day you might not be as aggressive you know like if you plan in this everyone in the audience is eighty and up then of course you wouldn't play as aggressive because you you know you'd plan for them to feel good as well you're not just playing for yourself or playing like it's 800 drummers in the audience and nothing else so it's never that vibe [Music] [Applause] [Music] yeah well like the the rim a lot of the rims are actual 24 karat gold so that takes the price up and then all of the like the throw offs and everything is 24 karat gold and then the wood is a solid cut and then it's it's only one mate of each type of style that that the ones I've forgotten so that was my attraction like no one else would have this snare drum ever and this one and this one so but I mean I'll just like vintage drums actually you know so anything before 1965 I'm cool with the sound and the the different sounds you can get out of those drums you know just like with snares just like that that could sounds just like a floor tom you know Anna deep snare and a tight snare so it's like you have three sounds and one drum I mean different people have different things you know I love tongs I just can't play them because you know I'm not in that vibe right now [Music] they are prototypes so I wouldn't really be able to have a back line have those symbols exactly but they are just growing up in church there's nothing really special you need because every you you will come across times where it's something always is missing you know you go to another Church and you want to play that set but he might he might not have any crashes so you got to figure that out this you might sit on another set and the hi-hat is stripped so then it's not gonna work so there you have to figure out something else about a pedal might break in the middle of a song but a beater might come off the pedal in the middle of song like all of these things prepare you for just being prepared for whatever so it's not really of course like you know if you had some marching band sticks I couldn't play with that but there's no really one thing I need besides like a key you know maybe some duct tape with everything else if this vintage I'm okay with that [Music] [Music] grew up in church they're like my first start was a like playing church when I was little all the way up to college so a lot of those artists that are out now you know I play with a lot of those people I mean I play other instruments but that's the one I'm the best at my dad played drums and my mom of course seeing every Sunday at church and she was in choir and all that stuff so all that helped but my dad never really showed me anything I still haven't heard him play even though we kick it all the time craziest ever
