hey guys i'm donald hey and i'm brett and we are starting a brand new video series called brit buys a door britney who works for cvp here has decided she wants to replace her front door and found out the process was not going to be as simple as she thought it was gonna be a lot of options a lot of decisions that need to be made and some work that need to be done on her end so we are gonna follow through this process and we are all gonna learn something along the way so stay tuned join us throughout the process can't wait thanks donald it's gonna be exciting okay donald so let's start with the basics now we need to think about the configuration of the door right so if you're a homeowner you really want to choose a door that's essentially the same configuration as the one you're trying to replace is that correct that's the easiest and that's kind of the basics that we go with yes we want to say you want to pick a door unit that's very similar in style to what you already have it's going to make the installation process a lot simpler a lot more effective got it okay and when we think about that i think it's helpful to consider the parts of the door because you're not just buying a door you're actually buying a door unit and that might comprise different parts of that door unit so can you walk me through the different parts of the door here and help homeowners understand what that might mean in their own homes yeah definitely um there's a couple of things that go into when we talk a door unit people call us and they ask and they say hey i need my door replaced and a lot of people it's they're referring to what we would call the slab okay that's that's the you're this operating part of the door uh maybe it's damaged maybe it's just old and weather whatever it is and people refer to i need the door and we try to help understand that that this is the door slab and when we replace we're not just going to replace a slab we're going to replace the entire unit whatever else is attached to it so you have to consider that so this particular door was a door that already has what's called a side light so it's got a side light here your door slab here a side light on that side a transom over top and that is all a unit that's going to come out with all of those pieces and it's going to go back in with all of those pieces you know the other parts of the door we talked talked you know door anatomy we said side light we said slab transom you've also got the sill on the bottom it's what's called a pre-hung door so it's already encased in its own frame so you have the frame of the door and then this exterior trim piece in this case is is a brick mold that's on this door this is an unfinished door so when you were talking about the parts of the door can you just tell me about the different materials that we have here as well sure yeah when the door comes to you it is going to be generally unfinished a door can be ordered pre-finished it just has to be a selected option you have to let us know you want it pre-finished as a general rule it's going to come unfinished so in this case this is a fiberglass slab all right this fiberglass slab is is going to come to you ready for paint you can paint it you can stain it uh the door frame itself is wood up to the point except for about five inches from the bottom is all composite so everything on the bottom of the door is gonna be composite and then about five inches up it's all going to be composite doors tend to rot bottom up you know water coming off a roof line splashing off a deck things like that and it rots usually from the bottom up so we've gotten away from probably years ago from doing anything wood on the bottom of the door but all of this right here the rest of that will still be wood the pvc brick mold we talked about this is pvc uh so it can take paint it doesn't have to take paint but you can you can paint that as well great you know this is so useful for me because as i said this is a door series and part number two is gonna be me finishing this door so uh stay tuned for that because i'm gonna have to stain or paint my own door and all the parts but i'm so excited that cvp is going to replace the entire unit because my door is beat up i've got wood rot it's a problem and you'll see that in part number three when we talk about install but i'm just really glad to know that cvp and our installation team is going to take care of my entire door unit and i'm just so excited for the stages that come from here so um okay now we're getting ready to talk about my favorite part which is the design options so are you ready to dig into all the different design options and choices that homeowners have okay okay here it is this is my door that i purchased for my home this is a therma-tru fiber classic door and i wanted to oh i had to decide about the different finishes on the door so donald can you tell me about the different finishes between my door and the door that we were just looking at sure a couple of different different options that that we look at in comparison the doors so one is this is what's called a smooth fiberglass door okay both of these doors have a fiberglass skin this one is a smooth this one as she mentioned she picked what's called a fiber classic that is a wood grain look in the fiberglass skin that's great you know and really as a homeowner i think you need to decide whether you're going to paint your door or whether you want that wood grain look and for me i really liked the wood grain stained look of the door that's what i wanted to go for so i picked the wood grain door and i'm going to plan on staining this door but if you're deciding that you want to paint your door you might want to go with a smooth finish is that fair to say either one you could paint or stain technically either one but yes if you're going for a stained wood grain look you would want to go with a wood grained door in the fiberglass that you get that true deep wood texture got it yeah i love that texture and i think it's going to work with my home so the other thing that i had the option to choose is the amount of glass in the door and that's a whole other realm of options but as you can see with these doors here with my door there's different glass you can have just a small section or you can have the whole door so give me just a brief overview on how much glass is possible in a front entry door uh well try to stay brief um so you you can do anything from this would be a quarter panel grit store over here is a half panel you can go a three quarter panel or a full panel the full will be all the way from where this starts up here all the way down basically where this slab ends down here that would be a full panel of glass and it's also an option in the side lights correct so you can decide uh how much glass you want in your main door slab and how much you want in your side light different configurations different options there something else to consider just to make it a little more complicated is that there's the option of privacy glass or obscure glass and you may not want people looking directly into your home again depending on what's on the other side you may want to have some privacy and so i chose a glass panel that has obscure glass so anything that you would add to that for hummers to consider a couple of things yeah with glass glass options are really all over the map um like she said you can go this one right here this is just a straight clear low e argon panel uh you can see straight through it for this particular homeowner it's up high enough i felt like they probably for this scenario they wanted to bring some daylight into a foyer area you can go the glass panels here which you see in this door and in british store they both match but they don't have to there is no uniform this side light panel could have been glass all the way down you know you don't have to make the match like they chose to do here uh this particular homeowner this glass panel they have this external uh wood grain grid on it all right called an sdl for a simulated divided light with brit's store over here you've got again you have the obscured pattern the the obscured options are plentiful you can be all over the map obscure patterns that you can choose she chose i believe the axis pattern it has this black gaming in it so it's going to give it's going to match really well with the dark stain that she's going to do on the door when it's all finished and like she said for her personal she didn't want anybody to be able to see into the foyer of her home so she chose something that has a pretty heavy obscurity to it so you can't see directly into the house that's right but it was still important for me to have some natural light coming into my home so that's the great thing that you have a lot of different options but you really need to think about what you want and for me going online into pinterest or looking around my neighborhood for design options really helped me narrow that down now another option that we probably need to talk about just briefly is price so the more complex you make your door the more ornate the more the price will increase is that fair to say relatively yes it's a general rule though usually the the heavier these glass packages are the more intricate they get usually ups that price yes and then obviously the more glass you have so as a as a full panel as opposed to a half panel more glass usually a higher price say great yeah and that's where our free estimate comes in we're always happy to come out to your home give you a free estimate and talk you through your options but for our team it's going to be easier for us to help you if you know specifically what you have in mind well this has been great and i've learned so much in the process of buying a door but what else do homeowners need to know i think there is one other really important factor we need to talk about and that's hardware and we discuss the hardware that is and is not going to come with the door and the decisions that need to be made uh the door is going to come with the hinges already on the door and the hinges you do have color options and we're going to ask you about what your finished hardware is going to be for where your lock and your deadbolt is going to go and we're going to want to match the hinge color to what the finish hardware will be for your lock and deadbolt but we do not get into the hardware business of supplying the lock and deadbolt i think that's a key element people need to need to know and understand that the door is not going to come with a lock and a deadbolt you are going to have to supply it but we will obviously install it when we install the door great okay and that's going to be another video that we're excited about doing and we've talked a lot about the choices and decisions that you need to make when you're selecting a front entry door so hopefully this has been helpful but there's more to come we're going to do another series where the second part is me finishing this door and then we're going to talk about all about installation and that's another key important part to getting a really quality front entry door but for now we're going to sign off thank you donald this has been awesome and thank you guys for tuning in yeah thank you this is fabulous visit us on our website customvinyl.net with any questions and we'd love to give you a free estimate bye guys [Music]
