luke chapter 4 beginning in verse 14. and jesus returned in the power of the spirit to galilee and a report about him went out through all the surrounding countryside and he came to nazareth where he had been brought up and as was his custom he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day and he stood up to read kind of like this and the scroll of the prophet isaiah was given to him and he unrolled the scroll or opened the bible and found the place where it was written the spirit of the lord is upon me to proclaim good news to the poor he has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind to set at liberty those who are oppressed to proclaim the year of the lord's favor and he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down and all the eyes of the synagogue all the eyes of the church all the eyes of the sanctuary were upon him would you stand please just kind of hang out for a bit if you would i want you to feel the awkwardness of this moment and i want you to wonder what's wrong with pastor rob stay standing think about the words that i just read feel the silence maybe marvel at what jesus just said and now for five seconds whether you're watching online or sitting or standing rather here i want there to be not a sound starting now friends today what i just read is fulfilled in your midst you could be seated and i'm going to make my way back up to normality here and hopefully some of you are thinking well that was an exercise in weirdness that was strange never saw you out there beginning before well listen when jesus went back to his hometown that's exactly how it went that's exactly what he did he opened the scrolls and he read and he went on purpose to the book of isaiah and then he read about what the messiah would be like when he came about what the messiah would do and he was standing a lot of times it was different a lot of times in synagogues because they didn't have rows of chairs people would sit you know cross-legged they would just pile in there or or they would stand you know even while the teacher came up to maybe a slightly elevated place and sat and taught so there was always different they were standing he was sitting he was standing they were sitting that kind of thing but they didn't have chairs and as jesus reads this he goes back out into the audience of the synagogue sits down in their midst sits down in the middle kind of like i was and it's just silent but remember what was happening before that silence before that people marveled at what he taught now we don't have everything jesus taught some of the other gospels go on a little longer about what he taught and he was claiming a lot of this stuff for himself then he dropped the one-liner that just caused a reaction quite honestly that i hope we get today he said today everything you just heard about everything i just read it's fulfilled where where did he sit in their midst where was it fulfilled he said today in your midst he's talking about himself and now listen some of you may think it's a little bit cryptic i'm not sure i'm following how that happened i promise you they followed i promise you they knew now i don't have the resume not even close that jesus did i didn't perform miracles he's about a year into his ministry and he's coming into town he's done a lot in judea and capernaum he's famous people are talking about what he does and how he teaches but listen even if i did have the resume of jesus it would hardly have made that moment any less awkward right it was weird you don't expect to start church and i don't know if it looked that way online but i hope you felt uncomfortable welcome to the summit now here's here's why that line is so important today this is fulfilled in your midst it's vitally important because it forces them to make a decision about jesus christ i mean it forces them there's probably nobody who heard that that went well today my decision is no decision today my decision is neutral thought that was weird but i don't really have an opinion on jesus no i promise you that didn't happen that day many in his hometown made a decision and sadly it was almost universally bad but i'm going to ask you to have that same opportunity watching online or here in person here's the decision there's not three there's two except or or reject you with me some of you going well i what about that lukewarm thing no jesus hates that spits people out of his mouth it says in revelation who are lukewarm i recommend not going lukewarm so accept today or reject i promise you you're going to walk out of here you're going to walk away from the screen you're watching on making one of those decisions but here's how it went with jesus verse 22 you you find out right now where they're beginning to head in those two decisions so he just said today is fulfilled in your midst broke the silence now they started talking and here's what somebody apparently said they said well of several somebodies isn't this joseph's son in other gospels we read that some of them said isn't this the carpenter's son is isn't he the blue-collar guy i mean he grew up here and then in the other gospel it says you know aren't his brothers with us and it names three or four brothers we don't have time to go into that some of you're going whoa what do you mean yeah long story half brothers they had a different father jesus father is god i'm already going down that trail i said i wouldn't listen here's what i want you to know i do it all too often i'll hear a teacher teach i mean i'll i'll think i know everything there's to know about a co-worker i i will i will discover later though let's see if you've done this that my information was limited i mean i thought i knew i really didn't and so i drew a conclusion that wasn't fair i drew a conclusion about their person maybe the way they dressed or whatever but maybe some of you walk in here and you're coming from traditional churches i don't know you walk in here first of all that threw you a little bit you never seen that second of all you're looking at pastor rob and you're going i just need to know if those are tennis shoes i know they're dark color but i'm thinking tennis shoe is that a tennis shoe is that a sneaker passer up i got to know if it's a sneaker i'm gone it's a sneaker if you're going over that i got a lot more left you might as well leave now so i've discovered that i didn't know i discovered that i was looking at the person and i missed the message and these people were marveling at what jesus said in some of your translations it says they were listening to him and they were amazed at this sermon he gave but then they began looking at jesus and making a determination and listen they were amazed enough to consider he may be this guy he may be this messiah scripture talks about but then they looked at him and some things began to happen and their look at the human jesus who's fully got him fully man changed their mind i mean it moved the pendulum to the other side and they decided to reject him and jesus knowing that that was happening while he's still sitting there feeling it go that way hearing the conversation he said this he said to them doubtless you're going to quote this proverb physician heal thyself what we have heard you did in capernaum do here in our hometown as well so here's what jesus is saying i know what you're thinking you're gonna you're you're preaching to us about all this stuff but why don't you do it and i know what you're thinking hey in nazareth you've already heard what's going on in galilee you've heard what's going on in judea you've heard what's going on maybe in samaria you've heard what's going on in capernaum but you're saying it's real simple jesus do it here hey if everything you said is true here's a list of things we're going to need to see you ever do that hey i'm going to need you to verify this who you are we do it in our country all the time what's your social security number show your license i need to see your passport i mean to do anything you got to verify all this stuff well jesus knew the people would ask him to validate his ministry he knew that but what's wild here is he's not going to do it and you need to know why he knew that they would want him to substantiate his authority by doing a miracle among them i mean it seems reasonable you did it out there you're one of us do it do it here you're you're a homeboy you're from this neighborhood don't we get special privileges you see up to this point there have been wide and ready acceptance of the person of jesus christ i mean his ministry is starting off really quite good very very good in word indeed and and luke now records the in the inception the the seed the blossom just the very beginning of a thought of a mindset about jesus that is going to grow like a cancer until it gets so powerful it's going to drive him to the cross right now it barely exists but you know where it was born in his hometown the seed of cancer grew in his hometown it's crazy he had sat growing up listening to the rabbis in fact it's i just read you said as was his custom so he did this all the time attending the synagogue usually right at the reading or the unrolling of the scrolls he would sit and listen and sometimes give commentary let me put it this way a way that we would all relate to he grew up going to church as and but as so many former christians say you ever talk to somebody and and you know they're not going to church they don't seem like a christian they they're they're kind of living all out for the world and you find this weird thing out you start talking to me and you find out hey wait listen i used to be a christian you ever heard that talk to someone i used to be a christian and then they'll say i used to go to church i used to do all these things associated with christianity and now i don't anymore what happened what happened to that person who used to well we're going to talk about that today some of you might be thinking a little bit here though you know he grew up here he did miracles out there pastor um i mean is it so much to ask throw him a bone and do do something dude some kind of a little miracle that's right it just seems to me that these people he grew up with they just needed a little extra to get over the hurdle so you know why not well here's my response to you if you're thinking that why if you're thinking why not i'm going to push back and say why they grew up with the wisdom and the character gang of god they never saw him sin they saw his heart and they saw his love can you imagine being around a teenager today who never sins let that set in that's what they're around he never does anything wrong he's got such a heart he loves everybody in the village what an example and he comes back and reads and makes this little announcement and their hearts are turning cold yeah but pastor rob i'm not with you i still don't see what's so wrong about it if he doesn't do five miracles okay how about one well if that's you what you're what you're thinking and you're thinking of asking me pushing your pastor oh why not why not i'm gonna push back again why do you care what i think i can give you some excuses i'm probably just as good as any one of you if coming up with excuses why i don't do the right thing i do it all the time but instead of my words let me give you jesus's explanation of what was really going on not only there but often today in people's hearts when they are face to face with jesus you guys ready for it here it is verse 24. he said truly i say to you no prophet is accepted in his hometown did you catch it that's what's going on that's part of what's going on jesus said i'll tell you what's going on right now no prophet that comes home has ever accepted oh well maybe if you did a miracle you no it never happens whether i do a miracle or not you're not going to accept me why i grew up here well that seems so strange to me he goes on in truth i tell you there were many widows in israel in the days of elijah don't you love how jesus does that he's talking about this they're all intense and then he's going i was walking down the street one day and everybody would what the subject just changed completely there were many but it but it really didn't listen there are many widows in the days of elijah in israel and and the lord came to elijah and there was a wicked king and he and he let elijah go to the people and go to the king and say it's not going to rain for three years because of your wickedness and he let elijah do that miracle and so people got hungry people were starving especially widows who couldn't take care of their family some of them were dying and so the lord moved in the heart of elijah and he went to a widow to to minister to her but here's the deal oh what widow was this well it was seraphath that was her name that's not really a jewish name in the land of sidon to a widow there so he left god's people and went to an outsider he left his hometown elijah and went to an outside and jesus is probably looking at him going you see what i'm saying no huh there were many lepers in israel in the days of elijah no i didn't get the prophets mixed up there was one name elijah after him came elijah very tricky different people there were many lepers the disease was running rampant and elijah could have gone to any one of them and healed them in the days of this this just this plague of leprosy but he didn't instead he went to naaman the syrian he left his hometown again and went to an outsider now they get it two stories they get it now how do you know they got it well when they heard these things all in the synagogue were filled with wrath now you're probably sitting here going i i can understand getting a little upset because you don't quite you mean they were just filled with wrath with rage how bad well they're about to try to kill them for what track with me don't miss it because the jews believed that gentiles were basically good for nothing except for kindling to keep the fires of hell burning that is what they believed that is how arrogant they had become thinking of themselves not only as god's chosen but god's only chosen and so they've got a blessing opportunity think think about what i said instead they get mad jesus said everything you've wanted healing words of salvation rescue right now it begins if you want it in your midst and by the way the gentiles will have a role in that as well repeat that last part please well the gentiles would be included it's for everybody let's kill them have you ever been given a gift i mean i got a brother and sister of twins they're 13 months older than me and at christmas sometimes i don't know why i guess i was a creepy rotten kid but but eight or nine years old if they ever gave a gift you know so only 13 months it's like my mom raised triples but if they ever got a gift if we ever got those one size fits all gifts you know and we got the same thing i might open it first and really love it but i'd look over and like they got one too and all of a sudden the gift isn't as valuable anymore kids might do that as they kind of learn what a gift is adults shouldn't be doing this especially with what the lord is is offering them here but god blesses you in some way you you can't even enjoy it you can't even be thankful for it because you just found out you're not the only one being blessed god's gonna bless some other people how self-focused do we have to be to think like this let's go on verse 29 and they rose up and drove them out of town some of you might have been thinking were they really that mad here we go drove them to the edge of the of the hill on which their town was built so that they could throw him off a cliff and i love this but passing through their midst i mean hundreds of them you got a mob they've got their hands on them they're trying to push them over the cliff and here's what happened listen he did one miracle that day this one right here apparently jesus just turned around and the crowd's there and he just walked through their midst that's what scripture says there's no way that was an accident there's no way they were like oh man 15 of us dressed just like jesus i lost them anybody find jesus no they had their hands on jesus i just walked away it wasn't his time yet it wasn't his time the day would come though when the spirit of rejection that is planted in his hometown here would finally culminate in in jesus on the cross it's how powerful this little thing got but it's not because they drove him to the cross like they drove them to the cliff and they don't get this but his love drove him there his love drove him to the cross i was reading this over and over again this week and i thought wow he goes home where he's always been the best behaved the most loving person any of them have ever seen he goes home after being gone maybe a few months and they hate him how do you explain that kind of incomprehensible stiff arming of god how do you explain that you know it's kind of like we see today when we see so many religions we even see some religions in the world that kill people and say god told me to do it and you have christianity where if people are really living out the love of christ well then it's the most beautiful loving thing you have ever seen and yet sometimes people react to the love of christ you ever seen this with hate they get more mad at the love of a christian than they do at the hate of maybe another religion that even kills i didn't say it made a lot of sense but what happened that day in his hometown happens every day now in a big way but here's what i don't want to do that incomprehensible stiff arming of god it's just that it's incomprehensible so we are not going to spend one more moment on these people we're done you've seen the scene you know how bizarre it is what i want us to do with the rest of our time is to figure out what we can learn from this passage because i said you're going to walk out of here or you're going to turn off your computer today and you are going to either accept jesus or reject him i know some of you are still middle ground holdouts i'm telling you you're not going to pull it off you're not going to be able to do it today i know i see i see some competitive people in the crowd so i'm thinking try though you may it's not going to happen i had a couple good friends growing up when we were you know i moved a lot 22 times before i was 19 all over the country we always seemed to move back to southern california where i was born and there's a couple of brothers and we'd go back to the same church there and they were they were awesome man they were studs i wanted to be like them they were around my age and you know i was there from about 10 to 13 or so and then went back and during this time uh as they're getting older they were great at everything surfing just just great athletes you know blonde hair just the whole picture of everything that i wasn't everything that i wanted to be and as i grew older the older brother that was maybe two years older than me and and three years older than the younger brother he began looking different he he got bloated i guess like his face would fill out and and he would look really puffy and you know it wasn't long before we started asking you know his parents and stuff hey is he okay bob bobby we called him hey is bobby all right well bobby's got a a disease that he was born with and we're doing everything we can well you know a kid doesn't really understand that but we did understand that apparently his kidneys were failing and way back i mean this was like 35 you know 40 years ago and he had to get on this list and get this thing called the kidney transplant honestly as a kid i've never even heard of that they're going to take something out of his body put a new one in from i mean it's pretty new and so they did it when he was about 14. he got a kidney transplant but it wasn't to be pretty quickly within a year's body rejected it and i remember stay with me being told why it happened why did the human body reject that kidney and here's what i was told the body did not recognize it as part of the host body our bodies could do that yeah it's like this this isn't my kidney this is this is foreign so the body's shifted pretty quick with within like a month from acceptance mode to to fight mode and it began treating it like a virus and attacking it i mean it got so bad that in order to save his life they had to pull that new kidney out and so track with me wait the new kidney is going to save his life but his body doesn't want it so they're going to pull it out well he'll die yeah yeah that's that's what almost happened as it turns out they learned more about it and today with what's called immunosuppressants things have gotten a lot better for transplant patients you know even heart transplants when i was young and there were heart trans plant patients they didn't live long i always wondered you know how do you get the body to accept something that's not only good but it's life-saving when everything about us and the way we are it makes us stiff-arm it and push it away i say thank you for that biological hospital lesson pastoral what does that have to do with well listen we're not that different spiritually we really aren't to be forgiven and adopted into the family of god we must accept jesus christ as lord and savior but the majority of the people who hear that because he paid for our sins on the cross you know that that little message that sentence i just gave that's called in the bible the gospel and you have to accept the gospel and know that the gospel is going to point out that you are not on track if you embrace the gospel what jesus did you can not only be on track but you'll be an adopted son or daughter of the living king there is no better blessing or favor than that and yet people look at what's called the good news that's the literal name of the gospel it means good news and they look at it and they analyze it and then they say you know it's bad news no no it's good news this no i i think it's bad news what what does that what could possibly take god who wraps around him human flesh comes and buys our freedom all we got to do is embrace it how could we possibly look at something like that and go i don't think so i as i look at it it looks like bad news that's our only hope to avoid eternal separation from god in a very real place that jesus did talk about now preachers don't preach about it but jesus talked about he talked about hell more than heaven and we tear those pages out and we don't talk about it or we say i don't think a loving god whatever well listen do you think a loving god would ever give himself to rescue you that's pretty loving in fact jesus said no greater love has a man period than that he would lay down his life for another so he showed the greatest kind of love so when people say i don't think a loving guy god would ever create hell understand this how it wasn't created for you the bible says it was a creator for the devil and his angels we just reject the free gift of salvation and we end up going to a place that wasn't even made for us through our rejection well listen the word is out if an organ goes bad you need a transplant to live and it used to be a death sentence but now it's gotten better a cancer survivor i read about just a little bit ago and a heart transplant recipient named kyle garland maybe you read about this guy he he's completed triathlons he beat cancer he has someone else's heart in him and he just did the kona iron man and did pretty well so i'd say not only it not only saved his life right he's not just alive he's he's thriving when jesus walked this earth and healed people and listen talk people and deliver the good news not everyone was happy about it in fact if you could believe this most weren't but what about all the big crowds pastor rob what about him most of the time when big crowds follow jesus it's because they could get something from him like what chick-fil-a remember that one a couple loaves some fish she multiplies it what are they well they're there for his teaching it was incredible but they hung out so long he needed to feed him they stayed for that did you know he preached a really little sermon after three days of service he preaches this one it's pretty short he said actually if you come after me and you want to follow me you got to eat my flesh and drink my blood how's that going to go well there are roughly 20 000 people there you know how many were there after he said that 12 and one of them doesn't count because it's judas 11. so why'd they leave because he said something hard because as they looked at him and he said that they thought i don't want to do that that's weird i don't know what you're really saying i don't want to follow you anymore this whole thing just got strange along the way listen many hearers of the good news rejected the good news it's crazy in the end they killed him as a final rejection of not only his person but it's salvation you can take your gift and take it to the cross and since the salvation gift remains the only answer for eternal life the only answer to our sin problem we better understand how to help people listen as christ followers if you're watching online and you are a son or a daughter of the living king you have a mission and hopefully what i just painted for you today makes you realize we got to reject accept problem so for our time right now i i want to teach you as a christ follower and you who are not a christ follower i want you to accept or reject i mean you're okay with people rejecting i'm not thrilled with it i'm not as a pastor but i'd rather you do that than walk out the door with that same old lame cop out of i'm just kind of neutral that's not going to work it's not going to work and if you're a christ follower you'll learn today in just the next few moments how you can defuse some of these arguments that people give all right here's number one first of all why do we reject why do people reject it's a whole host of reasons but most of the critical ones are revealed in the rejection narratives of the son of god now it's important you know how they got good at transplants they found out all the reasons the body rejects and they addressed each one now the guy who did the kona iron man does so well because they took away all the rejection issues and he has a healthy heart that his body look at me accept it we can do the same thing in christ here's the first one jesus was rejected out of familiarity and they said isn't this joseph's son verse 22. in other words we already know him hey we already know him we grew up with him he just said some weird things about it being fulfilled or in midst but i know his brothers isn't that his sister right over there is half sister they're all halves his dad died a few years ago but jesus grew up making tables and shelves he's a carpenter i mean you look at mark in euclid matthew about this same passage and people literally said he's not god's son he's mary's son wow so what is it familiarity these were the most familiar people with jesus on the planet they grew up with them and that familiarity bred contempt that turned into what wrath try to push him off a cliff we've sold our house we've moved into a neighborhood while we wait to find another house and here's the deal it's so much fun to be a seller in colorado you know it's not fun to be a buyer in colorado so we are homeless because we are out and we moved to this place way out there where there's all this acreage and you know we we i was out there walking bear bear's a little bit old now he's 13 years old and or just about any day now he'll be 13. i was walking him and bear walks pretty slow but i'm trying to give him his his exercise and my wife this'll for those of you that don't know she had foot surgery about a year ago and it was pretty extreme and she had to remain off her feet so she got bored so she decided to adopt two little fur babies some of you have met them pippin and gimli and i want you to know their size so here is here they are compared to a football you get the picture they're small right so i'm walking bare and i'm about a quarter of a mile from this rental house and it's way out there in the middle of nowhere and i see the probably the biggest hawk i've ever seen in my life huge and he's hovering i'll go man that is majestic how they hover i thought that's really majestic when they hover that low and then i thought it's not as majestic when they hover over your backyard so i was thinking that's weird and you know they hover really high they got really great eyes up this one was about 30 feet off the ground and just still as could be and at first i'm you know i stopped and i'm looking at this and he's just getting lower and lower and lower and it hit me and i grabbed bear and we ran i ran this is bare i like bear this is life or death and he's like yeah i know whose life or death it is so i'm going to slow down even more he's not a big fan of gimli and pip so i'll run there and i was right michelle was in this backyard has no fence or anything and she trains him so she'll take him off leash and get him to come using snacks and also gimli the smaller one pippen's about nine pounds gimli's like five he fits in my pocket and gimli's running around this hawk was getting lower and lower about ready to dive so i'm doing the wolf whistle i'm doing all this stuff trying to get his attention i get there in time and and he flies off and i realize little gimli was it was about not to not be gimli and pippin it was about to be just pip no gimli and i told michelle about it she didn't seem to take it all that serious she didn't see the bird and i was like i'm telling you gimli was just about you know dog food and and so she got it and i thought why did that hit me like that and not her well because she had been training him in our other house five or six years every day back there and we got this little contained area so that never came up and she's doing it over and over well not five years or only one year old but she's doing it over and over and over with these dogs never once looking up and considering what's up there familiarity almost brought tragedy you know max lucado was reading a book a while ago of his when he was babysitting his um grandkid they have a pool in the back grandkids like three years old and and they go through this whole routine of locking doors and protecting everything and the little gal got out now praise god nothing happened but she did start to get in the pool and was struggling and he got her and he immediately woke up to the power of familiarity his heart was pounding and he realized this could have gone the other way he called it familiarity he said it's commissioned from the black throne and it's clear and its job is fatal sometimes take it says this familiarity says this take nothing from your victim cause them only to take everything for granted that's the goal see familiar he's powerful it's patient it has to be why it takes time to become familiar makes sense right how did they get so powerfully familiar in jesus hometown well he got to about the age of 30 living among them that 30 years of thinking they knew everything there was to know about the son of god and then patience struck they got into a rut and so when jesus said the scripture all of our people have waited for i'm going to present it to you first it's fulfilled today familiarity had already done its work they couldn't believe you know a couple once left our church because they said they heard quote several sermons in a row now that ended the same way no not the sermons were the same just that ending how could you end the same way like three in a row do you know what the same way was the gospel they're like you gave the gospel three weeks in a row perish the thought in other words they're saying he always land the plane on the same runway that that jesus runway and that's so here's what i heard that's so familiar to us [Music] well that might be the problem first corinthians 2 2 and the amplified bible says this this is paul talking the christians he said i made the decision when i come to preach to you to to know nothing that is to forego philosophical theological discussions when i could do it and he said among you here's what i'm going to do i'm going to preach christ and him crucified and that's it the apostle paul the greatest theological teacher of all time said i'm gonna land the plane on the same runway as much as i can but the people that were familiar with it sometimes even just three times rejected it because of familiarity listen i'm going to tell you here's here's here's what paul's saying if you only remember one thing every time i preach let it be the good news of the gospel [Music] familiarity and contempt is a clear and present danger in our lives and it and this is on display in jesus life all the time matthew sheds even more light on it is this not the carpenter's son isn't this isn't his mother called mary are not his brothers james joseph and simon i mean i don't get it and so remember when he read and taught they were amazed at his teaching then you go a little bit further when they get mad and jesus is amazed at their unbelief so first they're amazed next jesus is amazed do you really want the son of god to look at you one day and and in heaven bring up everything he did to get your attention and then look in your eyes of confusion and the son of god is i'm i'm amazed you didn't you didn't get it i'm amazed that you think i didn't love you i'm amazed that you you think i didn't show up in your life can i just show you i was there here here here and here i was always there what happened did you think you knew me did you think you knew everything i was going to say and everything i was going to do so much that you missed me again those who who lived the closest to jesus ended up the furthest away none of this should catch us up off guard listen john 1 11 after jesus has gone to heaven as rose again and ascended john wrote many many years later and he said this he said he came jesus he came to his own and those who were his own received him not there there's breadcrumbs everywhere you can follow it [Music] john also said do not be surprised my brothers and sisters when the world hates you it hated him it's gonna happen there's gonna be rejection of you because you even associate with him jesus himself said in john 15 if the world hates you keep in mind hated me first you're going to make it if you belong to the world it would love you translation if everybody's loving you as a christian in the world you may not be a christian [Music] if you belong to the world it's gonna love you as it is you do not belong to the world but i've chosen you out of the world that's why the world hates you so jesus was rejected then and is often rejected now because we are too familiar i don't go to church anymore why not that's the same thing i don't worship why not it takes too much work i don't pray well i did 21 days of prayer a couple times didn't work what do you mean it didn't work what do you mean it didn't work you didn't win the lottery what do you mean because if it works you end up closer to jesus at the end of it than when you started that's how it works i would say if you're further away from jesus it's probably because you didn't go you didn't even try but if you walk away and you go i didn't get everything i want i had a lot of prayers about i and then i wanted this and then i i i i and i didn't get it so it didn't work that's not its purpose of course you think it didn't work with god [Music] you thought you were familiar with what god was doing and you were wrong next jesus was rejected out of envy okay so people people thought they had jesus figured out but why they get so worked up about it that doesn't seem crazy doesn't it i mean he got they got mad what led to rest that led to trying to push him off a cliff and apparently it's envy this reaction of envying jesus it was common then is still common today matthew 27 so when an angry mob stood before the beaten beyond recognition and bloody if you see anything on the passion of christ jesus stood there they brought out barabbas and pilate said i'm going to bring out the worst killer i could think of i think jesus is innocent i want him to go home i got an idea let me bring out let me bring out hitler i'll make a comparison and surely we can get him out of this and the crowd said no we'll take we'll take the worst you got we reject jesus we reject the one that loved us [Music] it's crazy but do you know what none of them in the crowd did that day not a single one of them walked away lukewarm can't decide nope they decided when they gathered with pilate whom do you want barabbas or jesus they cried out for barabbas and then it's revealed why pilate did what he did he said he knew that it was out of envy that they had delivered jesus up pilate thought he could beat their envy but he couldn't it got too bad next jesus was rejected out of incompatibility jesus answered my kingdom is not of this world the pilot he got desperate i mean my heart goes more out to pilate than it does for the people pilate at least tried [Music] and he said i have the authority to set you free or to send you the cross you've got to speak up you got to tell me you know what can i say to these people and jesus said my kingdom is not of this world they're rejecting me because we're not the same if my kingdom were of this world my servants would have been fighting for me that i might not be delivered up but my kingdom is not from this world we're not the same we're incompatible the way i want to go is not compatible with the way the world wants to go you know when searching for an organ donor the number one thing they look for is this compatibility thing we got to find someone who's compatible blood type all of that and compatibility issues and they can come from the donor or they can come from the recipient or or both but he said he jesus said is about as bluntly as incompatibility can be put he said you are from below i am from above you are of this world i am not of this world not of this one we're until you repent we're incompatible nobody wants to hear that all they want to hear is jesus's love and he would never do anything oh he's love he gave his life for you but if you keep going your own way that salvation will be incompatible jesus rejected out of anger as i just said when searching for an organ donor the number one thing is compatibility but if we have you ever notice if you determine that something's not a fit have you ever tried to force it that's why we get that same square peg in a round hole i mean most people when they're doing a puzzle or something like that they would try and they go oh i i i'm confused this doesn't fit how angry you got to be to force it [Music] and listen that's what they were trying to do to jesus jesus back up everything you're saying doesn't fit the way we want this to go so i'm going to need you to change so you fit and jesus is looking at him lovingly remember when the rich young ruler came the the lawyer came and said what must i do to be saved and he said sell everything you got and he went away sad and jesus also was sad his heart was broken because he he tried to make him fit he tried to get him to accept but but he didn't change the message and the guy said i can't do that the inca incompatibility as far as we know that guy's living in separation forever all the people in the synagogue were filled with rage when they heard these incompatible things listen he made it clear well they're filled with rage because they heard these incompatible things that jesus made very very clear but here's what they missed did they ultimately reject jesus because he didn't fit no i mean ultimately they got mad at jesus because he made it clear that they didn't fit they were religious but not relational intelligent but dispassionate they kept the rules but they didn't keep the faith and jesus simply pointed it out they got up and drove them out of the city because of it and finally let's close with this they rejected jesus out of fear and worry and i saved this for last gang because we do that today out of fear and worry out of the pandemic out of the things we see in afghanistan out of the things in the world where we say the jesus i know the god i know would never let this happen forgetting we live in a fallen world and we do much of this to ourselves they reject the rescue mission out of fear and worry one time jesus healed a demonic that was terrorizing the whole village and he cast out the demons and it turned out to be more than one demon it was so many he cast them out into a herd of pigs and the whole herd of pigs ran over a cliff and guess what after seeing that miracle and this this violent man set free and in his right mind the people of the town came out the whole city came out to meet jesus so far so good and when they saw him they begged him to leave please leave we reject you after raising lazarus from the dead there were religious leaders watching from the back as they came out in grave clothes four days dead nobody denied it and did you know that they got together the chief priests and pharisees and they convened the council and here's what they said he doesn't fit if he keeps doing what he's doing the whole world's going to go after him we got to kill him it was that day they made the plan to reject him to the cross why because he raised a dead man from the grave what he did was good so good they end beat him so much and got so angry they put the final nail in the coffin for those reasons and several more people reject jesus so we're done there's probably more reasons gang but i promised you i want to deliver on that will you reject jesus will you reject jesus because all the rejection issues pretty much have been removed when jesus preached about the soil there were three types of soil three types of hearts that could not get saved they're either too hard or too worried or too too mixed up in the world there was one soil that was so pure and rich that it not only received the seed which is the gospel but it flourished and approved it by fruit i just i just took away all the reasons people reject jesus this is why they do it [Music] hopefully that prepared the soil of some of your hearts that's why i want to end with this solomon said you know when you're preparing the soil and all that you do it in a season right you do that in the spring the harvest is in the fall [Music] and so apparently there's a there's a time for everything and solomon said in ecclesiastes 3 there's a time to kill there's a time to heal there's a time to die there's time to be born there's a time to reap there's a time to sow i'm just saying is your heart ready the soil of your heart today to receive the gospel message or did it harden somehow and you'll walk out and reject so i know we've gone over but i can't walk away without giving that good news and landing on that runway so here it is would you bow your heads close your eyes wherever you're at i am going to keep this as simple as the gospel keeps it believe on the lord jesus christ trust in him and you will be saved i want to do that pastoral i want to do that i don't want to reject tell me how to do it repent [Music] admit what everybody knows about you i've sinned i've messed up i thought i knew you jesus but i did not know how much you love what your real mission was i don't want to reject it i accept it if you want to do that pray with me now [Music] if you're ready to receive jesus christ pray with me now silently out loud i don't care at home here i'll pray you talk to god i'll give you the words heavenly father thank you for sending your son lord jesus i am sorry i've rejected you i have i've sinned please forgive me and now i i i tear open the spiritual fabric of my of my life and i say my heart is open lord i receive you i accept you come into my heart invade my life save me in jesus name amen and do something else different [Music] i know i always say identify yourself and that's important god forgive me for doing it this way but i think it's more his way we once a month do baptisms at this church that is jesus's way for you to go public and identify that you meant it when you prayed so we've got one coming up this is how i want you to identify if you meant it sign up and go public his way and i'll be there to meet you for the greatest celebration of your life how's that
