[Music] seriously though disney how did you make a recreation of an awesome movie like mulan and remove all of the songs that was seriously the best part you'll get back we must chill for the ccp you'll get back turn a blind eye to [Music] when i was a bit younger i loved the movie mulan i thought it was fantastic then i found out that the lead actress of the recreation of disney's mulan we'll call her miss leo voiced active support for the hong kong police and their brutal crackdown on the protesters trying to use their freedom of speech freedom of protest to protest against the communist party of china and its dictatorship and its horrible human rights atrocities and its takeover of their sovereign territory obviously something like that would i'd be at odds with the thing is i'm not a proponent of cancel culture i think canceled culture is horrific cancel culture is used against me and my friend uh winston all the time when we put out content that is critical of the chinese communist party it is a way for people to shut someone down that they don't agree with so her expressing such a horrific opinion that i disagree with is not enough reason for me to say hey hashtag boycott mulan which is a movement started by the hong kong protesters themselves that eventually spread over to the west however it went a lot further than that when you do a little digging see the problem with this is that if you read the original ballad of mulan whether she's chinese or not that's a historical matter you can look into yourself but it's a very fascinating story about a girl that basically takes up arms and pretends to be a dude to go to war um so that she can protect her father and her family the filial piety was the main focus here she wanted to protect her family against the evil nature of the empire see the empire at the time at least according to the story and the folklore behind it the empire was recruiting old people they're basically putting people through a meat grinder to fight against the the hun we can call them they were they had little to no regard for their own people's lives and mulan was willing to step up and and take the sword in place of her her family she was willing to be the hero of her family to make sure that her family was safe now the problem is is that in this recreation what they did was completely change it now she's like a guard for the empire this evil brutal empire that you know she basically had to take her father's place to just because they were so brutal in their recruitment techniques she now is protecting them not only that the whole point of the original thing is she has to learn um and go through all the struggles that a normal soldier would have to go through all the training all the trials and tribulations the the battles all this kind of horrible stuff that she had to from you know level zero level up to the point where she could actually be a useful asset that's all gone because in this new recreation she's just she knows how to use chi she knows how to do like kung fu and stuff and she's protecting the empire it has very little to do with her being you know a good daughter and practicing filial piety it also doesn't have very much to do with wanting to defend her people so basically the film the new film the recreation turned hua mulan into a palace guard protecting the emperor more or less and that is not what the chinese people grew up hearing it basically bastardized the entire story anyway long story short the recreation alluded to a nationalism protecting the party at all costs you can make a lot of parallels to any empire of china like any dynasty and compare it to the current dynasty which is the communist party of china it definitely focuses on that more like that sort of soft power and when the trailers came out and when people heard about it in china a lot of state media and china promoted it they were like this is awesome there i remember like we were criticizing mulan based on a lot of the human rights issues following it uh before its release when we were on our podcast and a lot of the paid nationalist trolls were typing comments that basically said like stop trying to make people not interested in this movie this represents chinese culture stop trying to to make people not pay attention to china this is a good representation of it and everything flip-flops so disney knowingly went out hired an actress that was absolutely in support of brutal crackdowns and and definitely not a fan of democracy didn't denounce her when she made statements like this and then went as far to go to a region of china which is in western china xinjiang where there are potentially millions of ethnic uyghur people that are in internment camps for education they go all you have to do is google uyghurs google the the uyghur concentration camps you can look into it yourself but so disney knowingly went to a place in western china where there are concentration camps that are committing cultural genocide splitting families apart and persecuting people for their religious beliefs and their ethnicity they knowingly filmed in that region and then even went so far as in the credits of this movie thank the public security bureau of turpan which is a town in xinjiang of this region the public security bureau is in charge of monitoring people it's in charge of a lot of the police brutality and things that you see these horrible stories that come out of the xinjiang region in china you're you're literally talking about this billion dollar multi-billion dollar company that went to this oppressive region knowingly in china to go film a lot of these scenes and we were talking about disney disney is a company that boycotted georgia because the state assembly passed that like anti-abortion bill no matter where you stand on that or not they tried to pull a kind of a social justice thing where they said you know we're gonna we're gonna boycott georgia because of their stance on abortion this is not good for for female rights but will go and support the local government that is committing human rights atrocities and forced abortions on muslim ethnic ethnic uighur muslim practicing people in xinjiang that's totally fine apparently so we're talking about a movie predominantly made a soft power for china made by a western company from with very dubious connections to to the communist party of china you can look into disney's relationship with china it's pretty fascinating stuff i mean how do you think they got shanghai disney there but long story short this movie was more or less made as a soft power puff piece for the chinese government for the for the nation of the people's republic of china now the funny thing is is if you go uh on google and you learn and you type in the word shot and freuder you'll learn that this word is a german word that kind of means the feeling of taking pleasure in someone's misfortune and it's hard not to have shot in freuder at this point because guess what disney dropped the ball disney thought that the market of china was much more important than anywhere else so if they pander to the chinese government it will be a wild success i guess they didn't learn from previous movies that it was just pirated if you go to china pretty much everything is pirated the only time people will spend money on a movie is if they actually go to the movie theater but because of restrictions on how many people can enter the theater that's not going to be a very financially viable thing not only was it a commercial failure because of all the piracy people started posting reviews about mulan from the pirated copy that they watched and still managed to give it negative reviews percent of the users on doban which is kinda like rotten tomatoes for china gave it a negative review let me read you some of their reviews i'll uh translate them to english disney has spoiled a good topic it's really embarrassing for all these chinese speakers to speak bad english and this is a thing like you have to understand china is all about face saving face so like when the the chinese people in the movie speak english poorly they think it's like making china lose face this person said i want to ask where did the 200 million dollar budget go there's nothing in the first half and the second half just falls on its face i wonder if disney's got an internal issue this person said the protagonist is filmed like a kung fu panda living in arabia the choice of all the characters is a failure so you can see there's a common theme here it's like they're like this is definitely not worth the budget that that you know they attributed to the movie's production when did mulan have super powers the plot is awkward the lines are awkward and the movie's a very big disappointment i don't understand disney this person says it's better to watch the cartoon again it actually kind of backfired because originally the chinese government was using state media to to promote this if any any representation that's positive of china um is good it's good for soft power propaganda but a lot of the commenters unlike you have to think about it like this like the western audience the hong kongers all these people hate this movie because it represents human rights abuses and atrocities and stamps on you know the future of chinese democracy it also their issue is also with the whole fact that you know the hong kong police were brutal and that she voiced the actress voiced very vocal support for them but then the chinese audience they obviously don't care about that part what they care about is that now they think that westerners who wrote this movie misread the the you know chinese culture they don't understand chinese culture so kind of backfired so the chinese people are pissed off for the exact opposite reason of the western audience but at the same time it's both negative press this chinese person wrote i love this one says like uh i don't want to diss the the chinese version of the movie poster but i have to say the fact that it's so hideous it's a real representation of the movie's content this person said this is another example of a backfire comment if you don't respect our culture country's history and culture then don't touch our stories this person said it looked like it was taking place in india and they kept squinting because it was making them so uncomfortable this person called it non-descript trash made them uncomfortable as well it sucks it's embarrassing and fake to not understand our chinese culture at all also you mix japanese bushido with chinese kung fu so they're finding massive holes in just the way this is represented it was very in a lot of chinese people's minds it was very sloppy in its representation and i also read a few comments that were were slamming it for mulan protecting the emperor as opposed to protecting her family because that's a really big issue for chinese people this person said is this movie really not used by disney to launder money the investment of 200 million us dollars is not even as good as a normal netflix movie this person wrote it tastes like general toes chicken which is a kind of a diss because it's like saying it's just basically fake american chinese food pretending like it's chinese food it's just like gerald says chicken so yeah you're in a situation here where like they really thought this mao zedong quote could work he one once upon a time mao zedong said we should support whatever the enemy opposes and oppose whatever the enemy supports so in this scenario if people are opposing mulan because of this human rights issue they're doing hashtag boycott mulan because of the uyghur issue or because of hong kong issue or whatever then china you know will use that mounted on logic and say okay we need to support this however when the backlash from the movie comes out within china after everyone saw the pirated copy and said this is [ __ ] this doesn't represent china this is offensive to us this is a terrible movie this completely bastardizes our legend our tradition our traditional chinese ballad if you misrepresent that then you don't have our support so then state media actually went as far to say is yeah this was a this was a terrible movie this movie didn't represent our chinese artistic values and all this kind of stuff even some of the most abrasive pro-nationalist chinese media ended up switching their tune completely switching their tunes saying listen this movie doesn't represent our china so disney just lost it fell on its face not only with the western audience but also the chinese audience and there's a lesson to be learned from this i mean these corporations like blizzard and mba now we see disney when you decide that the chinese market is more important than the market that made your entire brand successful you also have to understand that despite the money being there that potential benefit being there that potential advantage of of cow towing to the chinese market you have to understand that that can all be lost in two seconds china bans stuff it will buy stuff and then ban stuff tomorrow china can just decide hey we don't like this anymore you're out of here and that's why you see so much cow towing and so many so much self-censorship amongst entertainment companies even before it leaves the u.s stores or western shores to go to china because they don't want to lose that market but the problem is if china just gets one whiff of you being a little bit unsavory to the ccp or they just think you're a bit of a nuisance you will never win you can't support the chinese government and expect to win no one wins in that scenario the chinese government will literally run you over with a tank no matter what you do you can be a supporter you can be a detractor some of the most fervent supporters of the chinese communist party since day one since 1949 when they actually came into power have been murdered by other communist officials because they're either too powerful or they represent communism too much or oppression too much right so there's no loyalty here and i think disney is understanding this this movie has created a conversation about something that china didn't want the world to talk about and also at the same time it's caused a rift in the market for chinese people who are looking down on disney right now they're judging disney right now so disney just lost disney should be held accountable for really really destroying international relations between the two countries but also should be thanked for bringing up a very necessary conversation about human rights atrocities within china so thanks disney in some ways i hope you guys enjoyed the video don't forget to subscribe if you haven't already i noticed that tons of people are not
