let's say you're trying to choose between a heavy duty truck and a half ton truck because you need to tow or you need to haul you're looking for those features how can we tell everybody what the differences are between these trucks because they're very close well very simply we have two very similarly equipped trucks a heavy-duty 2500 and also a half ton 1500 silverado so how about we do this top 10 countdown of all the features and also a turning radius test and a zero to 60. perfect let me tell you exactly what andre has in mind we're going to check out the engine the power payload transmission the cabin towing suspension design and interior mpg and range visibility price and value all of that we're covering here's another funny part you can get both of these trucks the heavy duty and the light duty for the same price at about 60 grand really well equipped but in this case we have an ltz package truck with max tow that's the 1500 truck and this behemoth right here is also an ltz but it has a diesel nathan how about we show the engines and do a 0-60 right now now there are a lot of optional engines here including of course the diesel and a smaller displacement v8 but this one is the 6.2 liter v8 420 horsepower 460 pound-feet of torque hooked up to a 10-speed automatic transmission this is a four-wheel drive and honestly this is a lot of fun to drive it's very rewarding but at the same time not as powerful as that massive diesel while that halftime silverado 1500 has like six engine options there are only two choices right here underneath the hood of the heavy duty truck this of course is a premier engine it's a 6.6 liter duramax v8 turbocharged diesel of course 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque it also has a 10 speed automatic so let's figure out exactly how quick each truck is because this heavy duty is quite a bit heavier and of course we always test at a mile above sea level here in colorado near our office and this truck this diesel heavy duty truck is really heavy but it does have a turbocharged engine turbo should help the weight about 8 000 pounds that this truck weighs should not help eight point seven one is my zero to sixty i think i could do it a little bit better maybe eight and a half but that's basically all i can do okay traction control is off so what was your damage have a look look at the memory oh was this it 8.29 so mine was 8.7 that's actually really close considering how much more you weigh than i do yeah i weigh like a ton extra maybe more i interrupt this video for this week's tfl bids bargain we sell many cool trucks and aphrodis and this is a blast from the past this is a 1995 nissan pathfinder xc v6 four-door four-wheel drive but it's in tip-top shape this one belongs to the studios belongs to us and we've done many many different videos with it including going off-road very minimal rust incredible interior the v6 engine that just sinks check it out using the link below in the description of this video and don't forget use the submit a vehicle button to sell your truck or suv at tflbids.com welcome to the smallest bed you can get with this configuration but this truck can hold up to 1865 pounds back here that's right payload is pretty darn good and what about length well we are talking about overall length of weight for it 70 inches now considering what this vehicle is because it is a half ton truck you're not going to have to worry about putting in a fifth wheel although i guess you could if you really wanted to however on andre's truck it's a very different story both of these chevy trucks have really good usable beds but when you're getting a heavy duty truck like this my goodness this is the shorter bed option and you're getting a lot more usable space and of course a lot more payload you are getting 82 inches of length which is exactly one foot longer than in the light duty truck the width is about the same in fact but payload rating on this four wheel drive crew cab is 356 pounds that's significantly more than in that light duty truck and also this truck is equipped with a gooseneck fifth wheel package so you can tow a giant trailer nathan does your truck do this just a little bump i mean i really is lazy but i guess it can help for some people you know use your knee and you have to run to the cab for some reason what well okay um so you know what it's doing it's not going up but it's preventing me from slamming it down so look at that it doesn't make a lot of sense watch out look well that's okay so it's it is damp and down it's there so there's something electrical preventing it from flying down but nothing that's taking it up i mean i mean you could get that feature on like on the high country and others what so i won't let me use my knee because it's a half ton vehicular discrimination i say welcome to the air-conditioned confines of my half-ton truck it's so hot outside guys so let's talk about something else that's hot transmission choices because general motors gives you three that's right there are six speed transmissions still available eight speed transmissions available and like this one a 10 speed automatic transmission now this is a four-wheel drive truck but unlike some trucks you do have an auto option so you can put it into auto which turns it into sort of an all-wheel drive setup when the rear wheels slip it'll send power to the front and help you get out of nasty situations really good in snow but it also has four high four low so there you go full blown transmission setup in this truck more options than the heavy duty truck nathan you might be surprised that i also have a 10-speed automatic transmission but mine is heavy duty so what gm did is actually they worked with allison and this is an allison branded 10-speed that's behind this big v8 turbo diesel so that's all goodness offers a lot of ratios a lot of comfort and also fuel efficiency on the highway and by the way i also have an oval drive mode this is the only heavy duty truck available gm is the only company that's offering an oval drive mode in their heavy duty four wheel drive systems i also have four low i also have four high i have all that stuff [Music] all right so let's talk about the interior design and overall layout because it's very functional and i've had a lot of uh how do i put it angry emails and whatnot coming from people who defend general motors design of their interior and i disagree with one thing this is way behind everybody else in terms of screen size this is tiny in terms of layout in general it's okay functionality is great i love these toggle switches these are extremely useful i really like the place they put the trailer brake control this is a very good location these are great all of this is exactly where you want them so that part i'm fine with and you know what else i'm fine with cameraman i'm gonna challenge you because this is what i call the fart window here we go ready i'm gonna hit it boom every window goes down i know that's it's supposed to be like to cool off the vehicle really quickly when you uh are getting in there on a hot day like today but i like to call it the fart window because roman has really bad gas funny thing this heavy duty silverado has almost an identical layout and design i mean i think a lot of these parts are interchangeable i do have my piano keys here as well i do not have the fart window unfortunately this is a hill descent control instead for me i do have my tailgate controller but i have something that nathan only wishes he had i have an exhaust brake with its own button right here which helps me go down mountains with a big trailer this truck has the max towing package meaning that i have a 342 rear end and of course a two inch receiver and look at this i have the camera inputs same as the heavy duty so that way i can hook these up to the trailer and i'll go through the internal monitor system helping me position the trailer down the road that's great so what about towing well this vehicle can tow up to 11 900 pounds which is pretty good but there's more because technically speaking you can't put a fifth wheel in here 9 400 pounds that's the rating although keep in mind this is a short bed truck and if you wish to do that i highly recommend you contact mr truck because he's going to want to get that on video when you do a sharp turn if you do want to tow higher more than 11 900 pounds like nathan can of course this is the truck for you and you have the equipment to do it you have a two and a half inch receiver it's larger than a half ton why well because bigger is always better and up to eighteen thousand five hundred pounds here at the bumper hitch or fifth wheel gooseneck rating is the same 18 500. yes i also have camera inputs for inside the trailer or in the back of the trailer seven pin connections here and like i showed you before um the fifth wheel prep kit is inside the bed and of course heavy duty trucks can tow better and more because of heavy axles this truck is also equipped with a 342 rear end but of course it's all different because the 10-speed automatic has slightly different ratios than a half-ton truck now we're laying down the differences between these two trucks and there's one major difference that really does suit my truck the half ton and that is ride comfort on a day-to-day basis the ride comfort in this 1500 is like a cadillac compared to the heavy-duty truck and that has to do of course with suspension the way they're set up for the amount that they're going to tow and of course haul and on top of that tires that's right mine are spongy his are like hockey pucks all right nathan i'll give you this the halftone truck has a really nice ride especially in that silverado 1500 but here it's not as awful as you might think yes i have more leaf springs but this truck is also equipped with a z71 off-road package which means rancho shocks which means slightly better ride and also independent front suspension this is the only heavy duty truck currently with the suspension set up others have a solid front axle so actually as ride comfort is concerned this is not too bad right we're almost done with a countdown of features but before we move on nathan what do you say let's do a turning radius test let's see how maneuverable these trucks are dyno my so for the turning diameter test we're going to do it like this the passenger side front tire is at the cone then nathan is going to go full lock make a 180 and we'll mark it with a cone yes i know we can look at spec sheets for turning radius measurements but this is the real world let's figure this out ah so i'm gonna have to try to beat that so you know we're a pretty high end outfit and as such what we're aiming for is for him to miss the horse pucky over there keep going yeah you're really not gonna make it i thought about it like it'd be really funny if you hit the wood and then knocked it over because you're the monster truck but i would say that my turning radius is better than yours unfortunately i think you also ran over a bunch of horse manure oh boy this is not good sorry i wanted to talk about design real quick because yes they're very similar trucks you know they are related but this truck is a little bit more basic in terms of its overall design right because there's not a lot going on and it's a lot smaller let me show you come here now this hood difference alone is enough to say there might be a difference but it gets even better because this functional hood scoop is surrounded by chrome in fact there's so much chrome on this that it will blind people if you're behind them there's not as much chrome on this one so that's something to keep in mind i'm not a big chrome person myself you might be but i wanted to show you the biggest design difference between the two of them other than height and that's over here something that i really admire about the heavy duty truck and that's this step right here it is not on my truck and it should be standard on all chevrolet trucks as far as i'm concerned because it's awesome visibility very important with trucks chevrolet well general motors has got a really good thing going i really like this lcd rear view mirror it works really well at night not everybody loves it but well there's andre so let's talk about camera systems because there's a lot now this is the bed cam and i'm going to go to the hitch cam in a second with my vanna white running by the hitch keep running in the heat okay and then we go over to the next camera which is the front camera which by the way you may notice look at that massive grille that truck is huge we'll talk about that in a sec but there goes andre doing a little boogie right there all right now this is an interesting view i don't really think it's very valuable because i guess maybe you could park between lines by using it but otherwise i don't really see it as being useful now this does go along the side so you can see what the outside front tire is doing which would be good for off-road or i guess for precision placement then of course there's this one now this is an interesting one because it combines that with your bird's eye view and you can see andre who's suddenly gotten really tall and he's cruising by the truck funny enough this heavy duty truck is also equipped with a rear view camera mirror and yes nathan is not dancing behind me but i can still see in the same way let me show you my cameras and also no surprise same types of features and this is great i'm really liking that gm is actually offering same type of visibility both on heavy duty trucks as well as light duty trucks yes we do have very similar towing mirrors nathan and i but mine not only has power fold and of course it has additional led lights but mine also has power extension nathan's don't because he didn't pay for that nathan we're down to the top two points for comparison and i'm talking about fuel efficiency and of course value in price and i just looked it up your truck is rated at 21 mpg highway it's not bad and about 18 combined my truck is rated at uh not rated that's right you're a heavy duty truck right but we have tested it many many times tracks like this and i got on the previous duramax trip about 19.9 mpg on the highway so these big trucks can also be efficient well that makes sense with the turbo diesel and everything else but the bottom line is that you're going to have a lot more range right yes bigger tank right potentially bigger towing mpg as well yeah that's right mine is more of a city truck and yours is more of a work truck let's look at it that way but also your truck requires premium fuel for that giant v8 i was hoping you would forget about that okay never mind so value right as it sits your truck is at about 59 grand almost 60 right my truck well the way it's configured right now is about 69 grand so it's it is more expensive but both of them can be priced about the same with roughly the same equipment yeah so for 60 grand you can also get a four wheel drive crew cab heavy-duty diesel right yeah and mine not only can you get the 6.2 but you can get the straight six diesel which is the one i like there you go so at the end which truck would you choose this truck with the diesel the little diesel so the half ton yeah okay you know what come on come on mine's good i would choose a heft on with a 5 3 and a 10 speed you know the trail boss we had that was a really good track wasn't it yeah so um of course if i wanted to go long distance with a heavy trailer heavy duty all the time but i don't personally need that yeah it's overkill yeah yeah as always go back to tfltrac.com for all these news views and real world big and medium-sized truck reviews
