gosh this is so awesome what's up guys we are at the Thomas Metzler violin shop in Los Angeles we're going to be trying out some cheap violins actually the cheapest violin on Amazon that you can buy all the way up to a 10 million dollar Stradivarius violin and we're also gonna be talking about what makes it worth so much why is it so valuable but I'm going to find out if you can hear the difference between these instruments based on sound alone now we have a professional microphone that we'll be doing this tests on it's a lot in audio ok so the way this test is gonna work is I'm gonna play three different phrases and you're gonna hear them back-to-back on each violin now if you'd like you can close your eyes as you listen to it and try to distinguish which one is the most expensive one versus the cheap one but the three phrases I'm using are from journos theme megalovania and Mario Brothers theme the reason I picked these is because journos theme is very lyrical it's up on the higher end of the instrument and it's something that can help us hear how the violin sings in that area so here's number one [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] I'm using megalovania because it's more energetic you've got a lot more I'm playing a lot faster so it's going to test the response time of all of those notes as well as staying down in the lower end on the G and the D string so we're going to test that out [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] the last one I'm gonna do is Mario now I chose Mario because I've got some double stops they're playing more than one string at once and it's gonna be all over the place I'm going I've got a lot of string crossings so we're gonna test the bounds of how quickly the instrument responds on the top and the bottom end [Music] before I tell you which violin is worth how much I want you to comment below what your guess is which one is the cheapest one which one is the most expensive one then if you want you can fill in the ones in the middle as well so go ahead and do that are you ready [Music] so this is a violin that was made about ten years ago by Alessandro de Matteo in Cremona know I like this violin a lot it's got good depth it has good sound and I think it really I think it really just it plays well and it's something I would definitely use this is something that I would play at home I think for concerts and things it's very very good [Music] okay so this is the cheapest violin you can buy on amazon for under $100 now it really feels and sounds cheap it's got a really it's got a very very thin tone very superficial I mean you probably couldn't hear it from very far away I think at all it just does not project it's also very hard to play so this is the Serafina violin that you can get at the Thomas messler shop it's really good for beginners it speaks much better than the Amazon violin it's got more of a more even tone I would say over all of the strings it's just easier to play than something like a $100 violin [Music] so this is an Antonio Stradivarius violin it's one of the best examples of a violent in any entire world it's valued at over 10 million dollars it is absolutely worth it one of the things I love so much about this is as soon as I play on the lower register the the G or the D string it just opens up and it's it fills with just a really beautiful creamy full rich sound and that is just I don't I don't want to stop playing I have to because we have to go on to other violins but it is such a joy to play and it's beautiful I mean you look at the craftsmanship here you see I mean the the tailpiece and you just the the type of wood and the varnish the pegs everything the scroll so I mean I was actually nervous I'm still nervous just holding it and playing it but this has been so much fun to be able to do so hopefully I can play this a little bit more in the future for you guys and I think I will if you keep watching and subscribe I'll got some more music for you on this [Music] [Music] this is a violin made by Antonio Galliano and this is all way this is also amazing to play I love how it feels on the upper register the a and the E string just sings really really well and again the response time it's very fast it's almost like if you're driving a car and you know you're able to turn in it and it turns very quickly at the handling is incredible so the playability the sound is just buttery and creamy again if I have my choice I would go with the Stradivarius but this is an amazing instrument in its own right ok so tell me about this Amazon violin this is about a $70 violin give us a made in China mass-produced the fingerboard is not real heaven ii the maple used is very plain it was made in great hurry by people not making high wages usually they would have two or three hundred people in the factory so this is one way to get started because the price is inexpensive but it will not compare the sound will not compare to pretty much anything else that we try ok so this is the Serafina which you carry in your shop and you sell for about $450 is that right exactly and it happens to be our house brand you'll see that the wood is nicer the workmanship is nicer the strings are a lot better we set them up with better bridges let's really have any finger board and the sound generally is a whole lot better than the first one so the Alessandra de Matteo violin which retails for over $10,000 what can you tell me about this so this was made by one person one maker in Cremona Italy the birthplace of Stradivarius so this is a tremendous increase in quality beauty and sound this one happens to really really great there are a lot of really wonderful instruments in this in this price range so you don't have too long for a straddle yeah this sounded great I love this one yeah so this is a Guarneri model beautiful wood a nice nice varnish and the maker is still living working in Cremona so here we have an antonio Galliano which retails for well over $100,000 what can you tell me about this one well this estimate was made in Naples Italy in the late 1800 1700 sorry it has beautiful one-piece back it's a really a lovely specimen these are also very rare but not as rare as as the Strand that we which you will hear soon so I want to talk to you and ask you Tom why is it why is this Antonio Stradivarius violin why is it worth so much money all value is a function of supply and demand and since there are only about 640 of these terribly rarest in Stradivari violins every one of them whether they sound good or bad but it is worth a lot of money but one like this that sounds really great it's gonna be worth a lot more than some of the ones that might be sitting in a museum somewhere so this is also one of strats golden period instruments meaning is considered even better than the majority of his other instruments where he used the very best materials the most beautiful of our nation and the best okay so you know my great grandma has a Stradivarius that I found in her closet that's worth 10 million dollars right these two to be family that comes in yeah we see this unfortunately several times a week we have to crush people's dreams and let them know that really what they have is a early 20th century German reproduction that were made by the many tens of thousands [Music] [Applause]
