Chatting with the Founder/CEO of Rivian on the Truck R1T & SUV R1S

don't do it don't do it yeah sorry I cheated I cheated Ilan last weekend I was lucky to attend an event hosted by a Riven to check out their all-electric truck the r1 t as well as their all-electric SUV the r1 s so let's start with the SUV the SUV is clean while still keeping a luxurious feel it's centered around one center touch screen along with a display behind the steering wheel you'll notice a simple button to fold down the third row there's ample storage in the back behind the third row and you'll notice certain cues from the model three like the door handles the materials premium and every model comes with a flashlight beautiful LED headlights along with two lidar sensors on the front of the vehicle now the rivey unveils have probably the largest front I have ever seen I think I could fit two of me inside it and you'll notice a completely flat underbody thanks to the battery the one thing that I noticed is that Rivia makes use of every space including this passageway underneath the second row of the SUV overall I was really impressed with the SUV from its quad climate zone control to everything else that has to offer while I was there I was lucky enough to speak to two very important people the first is Brian case the chief engineer of special projects at I'm a pre-order customer of the truck ok and so I usually stand over by a truck deductive on it my favorite thing is the gear tunnel but both of these vehicles are mid-size battery packs ok so that's a 300 plus mile range variant so in the SUV it's like 310 and the truck is like 300 of them both of these are the 4 motor so that's a 3 second zero to 60 truck can tow 11,000 pounds that should be chosen both vehicles will go through three feet of water 45% grade because there it's the same skateboard that he yeah the reason we're able to parallel develop and launch these with it just a small stagger screen - is it a lot of the technology down to you know my front door is identical I could take it off and put on the other car yeah these two vehicles they were showing out it's a seven passenger SUV 5 passenger truck yep both of these have our level two I've got two lidar the to lidar we're near the front you know your bumper someone told me that you know so it's it's level of three capable hardware okay as we develop that system overall more than functionality and how many cameras I believe it's ten cameras on the car okay and that's same for both the truck and that's incorrect right slightly different position obviously different length of vehicle but yeah same UI are internally developed HMI our interface RV activity nice so yeah tremendous amount of technology worked on yeah obviously mechanical stuff when you look at the cars a little bit more interesting yeah you know and we've got some different levels of Lux integration we were showing so that's right so Alexa is fully integrated now yeah so one of the cool things with it is you can completely turn it off if you want you can set up so that it is a button in their face instead of direct commands yeah but if you're worried about the privacy perspective turning off doesn't exist if you want to use it great it's the same thing you have in your house yeah the cool thing with it is we've integrated into our body controller so I can do stuff like open my gear tunnels open my hood oh okay so stuff that is more than just what's available in another so that's nice to know is like a little extra ties in to specifically the vehicle opening different doors everything that's automated what about the material like I noticed that that that's very eye-catching is that the way that everything's done inside is just very it it screams a little premium and it just kind of it just looks very it looks good I mean I have to admit that was the goal the goal is to look good right everyone on the channel is gonna be like oh you're cheating but like you know it's all about the electric movement and I think that's what you know there's a lot of interesting things that Raveena's doing here you know an SUV in a truck you know a truck that doesn't exist in the market today an electric truck are huge and so it's seeing that you guys kind of the different approaches that you guys are taking because you know the interior for me that that was definitely eye-catching it's good well it's really really happy to hear that from our perspective we feel it's a great integration of the interior next year actually talking together yeah we've designed it to be inviting we want to be from a brand perspective as invitation as possible to me as an electric adventure company something where you can get out take this vehicle go off-road not be worried that you're gonna damage the floor mat exactly I don't want you to think like well I'm gonna get my car dirty so I shouldn't do this I want you to thank I'm gonna go and live my life and have my adventure my vehicles gonna be a part of that exam it's the reason the gear tunnel doors your staging area for your activities it's the reason that you can fit your adult friends comfortably in the back seat they've got quad zone climate control so they can actually knock walls oh nice yeah okay and then really trying to take care of people it's also a comfortable chair like your legs are gonna get tired a long road trip so trying to release like treat interior first and girls in there and then the material excuse on these seats that kind of like the rugged you know waterproof absolutely yeah yeah so still ventilated to keep it cool yeah but no leather no Boyd animals right right so it's all good did the seats have heating and cooling yes option yep yep very good very good our underbody off-road electric adventure vehicles so once you have extremely durable underbody two reasons one the off-road love of damaging getting out there on the trail getting stuff but the most important thing for us is protection of the battery pack yeah so underneath that are battery pack we have a composite plate we can handle the entire way to the vehicle on a 2-inch square without damaging it Wow so the whole theory behind this is if you're high centering you're coming off a ramp you're doing something that you know you wanted to do but maybe you shouldn't know yeah or maybe you should have the vehicles got to be safe for all those conditions yeah so we offer optional skid plates with a front rear to give that same level of protection for the true off-road adventure but definitely the battery packs extremely safe for all those conditions so Thomas I mentioned the ability to go through three feet of water yeah that submerges the entire pack so it's also isolated against that and then as far as the adaptive suspension does it can it raise and lower yeah so it'll go up to 14 and a half inches of ground for while so from a clearer perspective it's flat underneath yeah I've got that structural battery plate 14 inches to the ground so I'm not worried about a rear diff hitting or anything like that I've got flat break for arrow great for off-road and then from a lowering perspective I can drop it down to I think about seven and a half inches for an aggressive guy for park mode yeah yeah right as a company we extremely cautious about making sure that we you know what we're doing with your data yeah because it's you we're not gonna take anything that people don't want us to have yeah but from the convenience of life being able to just you know sit in your house and I go I did want to go mom biking tomorrow hey Alexa what's the charge to ask my ribbing getting that answer mapping something from your TV through a connected world on to your car like there's a lot of function that really is is pretty slick it can be embraced to make life better yeah otherwise from a voice command system of just you know tune the radio that kind of stuff or you know hands-free calling awesome keeping the vehicles safe for the driver that's hands on wheels with fun right so now obviously that requires an internet connection are you guys is that like part of you yeah verges yeah so it's LT connected like the right now both these are LT connected so I do have some Alexis stuff on the blue truck that I can show okay I can change the cabin temperature the map settings that kind of stuff right now and we purchased of the vehicle does that come with or where we're sorting that okay so that's something that will come out with the purchase plans yeah yeah awesome and then your your wallet review so I'm a chief engineer special projects so my role is you know delivering early vehicles like this where it's it's a production design vehicle if you preorder one this is what you're gonna get you're not going to this is not a concept car yeah but it's built before all of our tooling is kicked off it's built before you know the assembly plant is up and running and so making sure that we deliver the production intent design that we'd be show to people that is a real drivable car so it's cool because then I can take that experience and bring it to people right right so you can still place orders a trivial moving comm thousand dollar fully refundable deposit it's open for North America right now and yeah get in line and then estimated ship date so we'll start shipping the end of this year for the truck a few months later for the SUV and depending on where you are in order and how you configure your vehicle which would be later this year that I'll set your place in life oh thanks for the time and a problem offices thank you very much all the vehicles built in Normal Illinois so oh yeah from from the plan yeah very good [Music] I was also super lucky to meet the founder and CEO of riffian r.j. syringe electrification and like you know moving forward so really appreciate everything you're doing the first time you're getting to see the ribbon in person and I have to say it's very very you know just it's just like the photos you know so you know I've been seeing photos and videos and so just had like three questions I know you're super busy so I wanted to kind of get pick your brain on number one I mean clearly the products but the question is like charging like I'm sure you get asked this all the time but like what's the plan for like you know how like the scalability how are we gonna get that charging network where you know you don't you're not scared to go somewhere not scared to go for like census for that la very common trip so we're building we're gonna be announcing tell each other what we call but essentially a network of DC charges the next cities and places it's really important for us places you're going to yeah to see the world right so adventures in addition to that we're also making sure that the vehicle can plug into very easily easily and seamlessly all these third-party networks that are starting to grow but yeah but still in staging right what we do believe it's really important to create that end-to-end solution that we control which is the wonderful now is it a proprietary charger used on your gut sniffles we use the CCS okay same is just whatever the vehicle but what for the ribbing network it'll be for just ready the ribbing adventure awesome that sounds really really cool and what's the what's the charging speed well it's a funny thing to quote because it's like turn a DC charger to really talk right so you can charge up the crater kilowatts but it's not really like a fixed number is the charging yeah what's the state of charges when you start but max like 300 max 300 but what that defense occurred Louis yeah yeah yeah but if you're like fully charged they'll charge you know what to give you just an idea you can go like a 10 to 90 percent charge yeah so between the SUV in the truck what's your personal favorite feature of each engine so on the truck it's there's a feature called the gear tell me yeah they give you soft stuff with us which is like honestly we designed the gear tunnel and we designed the car around this smell is the thought first let me go to pick up virtually pick up don't have the bed is a different kind of space like yes we have a pilot on out but it's for bigger things you wanted something that you could like and then I guess then the SUV you're in a lab with the third row and the SUV okay it's actually better than what you see here I'm six foot one foot that was the biggest question because obviously I couldn't go in there but from from outside it looks like a full fledge seat but I can't see the foot space so kind of asking in solid oh good yeah it's better than that okay that's very awesome yeah I noticed that you know both vehicles you guys have really maximized space so like on the truck to us we're really impressed that the rear seats lift up and their storage in there yeah and then their storage in the truck bed as well where there could be a spare time though a new space in the car yeah every space is very very impressive along with the tunnel and final question is you know amazing truck amazing SUV there on the horizon what's the the master plan so we have a have another three products I cannot follow today right similar to how we rolled these these vehicles out we'll show them when they're essentially done yeah got it no concepts this could be a little bit out but a lot of works going on ya know it sounds like you guys are putting a little I mean we were just watching you're having a conversation with some people who had you know horses so they brought up some really good points and taking the feedback I think in cars that have these over-the-air updates and have the ability to make changes and listening to feedback of customers yeah so I guess in closing right feedback loop for customers to communicate like when they start to get it what are you guys looking at as far as to be able to make those changes the beauty of we use heard me talk about but one of the reasons we've tried to avoid a lot of physical buttons because they create these monuments that are hard to change right so in terms of feedback it'll be here these kinds of discussion at abhi will have a portal throwback the mobile application yeah mobile in the vehicle so yeah but wherever we start to see things either we keep these yeah really excited I think what you guys it was really awesome to see another electric car company making amazing products sure Riven is the new kid on the block but what I saw at the event looks extremely promising and it's another company helping to transition the world to sustainable energies from their 7 passenger SUV with luxury and adventure to their truck where no space is wasted it has a gear tunnel and a motorized cover and a motorized Super excited about this car. It just looks like quality and not an effort to be cheap. Obviously they're catering to a certain market who can afford such things, but Tesla was no different when they started out.

The interesting points with RJ where he mentions a rivian adventure network just for rivians, discusses the nuances about charging (which I am probably misinterpreting as supporting 300kw) and 3 upcoming designs.

Edit: The chief of engineer of special products mentioned 10 cameras, two lidars, and lte included in the purchase plan (not sure if that will be different from premium connectivity from Tesla)

I love the R1S, I just wish there was some form of destination charging in my state other than Tesla super chargers. My current thought is to purchase a model y and switch to the R1S in a few years once the infrastructure is in place.
