Chasing 300 - The World’s Fastest Motorcycle

do I have a poor horse [Music] okay I'll smile for a structure you don't take up land speed racing because it's easy I've been going at it for ten years now I'm a lamb I'm here to set a record [Music] [Music] bolivia home to the salar de uyuni the world's largest salt flat nestled amidst the andes at almost 12,000 feet it has a surface area of over four thousand square miles there has never been a world land speed record attempt to [Music] [Music] [Music] it's day two of the event in the team already a day behind their bike didn't arrive until early this morning costing them valuable time they'll have to work fast to get it unloaded and ready for the first run [Music] [Music] before any machine can attempt a land speed run it must go through a thorough tech inspection by the FIM official if the team's bike doesn't pass tech their journey could end here hello my name is Charles sonic am I'm the if I am stewards and the tech coordinator at the FIM for land speed racing it is important that we have a safety check of all the motorcycles and specifically for partially stream motorcycles we check that the rules are respected so at the end we have a motorcycle that is confirmed with the rules so now we can only say good luck the official looks over every inch of the bike and then gives his approval the team has just passed their first obstacle late in the afternoon the team is able to get in one run it's disappointing there's something wrong the turbo isn't producing send a little more boost on it if it hung in fourth gear for a long time just because the wood making up this but real smooth no shakes no issues just need to do a little more on the tune mail now then the day with a disappointing 199 mile an hour run 63 miles an hour short of their current record the team have to work fast to sort out the turbo issues if they're going to have a chance of breaking a record a competitor of ours Ralph Hudson just completed a run at 274 miles an hour it looks like Al's record could be broken then without warning Al's lead tech falls to the ground in pain the medical team quickly attends to him but his condition is unknown this puts more stress on Owls crew chief in an already stressful situation some relief comes when Ralph Hudson is unable to complete a second run in a two hour deadline owls record is safe for the moment I'll makes two runs and the team chases the issues but is only able to reach 204 miles an hour [Music] a third run is prepared the team believes they have found the issues in the fault of booth control and time is running out I'll have to set a good time it's a stunning 265 mile an hour run three miles above the current world record however the team doesn't have a new record yet in land speed racing you have to make a second run in the opposite direction within two hours for it to count as a record the celebrations are short-lived al alerts the team to a potential disaster the front tires come apart the team believes the speed has caused it to expand beyond their calculations contact with the front fender is all but shredded in time the clock truly is against them now the tire issue will have to get resolved quickly as there is less than 45 minutes before the Sun sets Al's team tries to remain calm they have to be quick they also can't rush and make a mistake there is no room for mistakes of the speed hours running members from the other team assist the clock is ticking the Sun is setting it's going to be close but only 15 minutes till the Sun sets the team heads out the three mile marker Owls going to have to ride into the Sun with limited visibility it's hardly ideal that Pal has no choice just moments earlier while the team was attending to Al's bike our place tape across the top of the visor hoping to help with a blinding light from the Setting Sun it all comes down to this moment at eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety five feet pal takes one final deep breath at the thin air Bill's like an old western seeing a Texan set off to ride into the Sun this will be the first Bolivian land speed record if it all goes right but it all does still have to go right [Music] [Music] owl said he came here to break records and he does with an unofficial record of 265 miles an hour the problem was you know take the shield right well when I got the opposition I couldn't see the tape is on the line of sight so tip the phrase on the shield up will it blow back down and so finally I'm in fifth gear got more prop like just upholding the field open with my thumb and go ahead and work so I just let it drop down sat up and wrote it like this so went through it 266 so legacy there we go there we go first one here first one here it's got a lot more in in land speed racing you can only be fastest for so long what happens next is on par with the best of heavyweight battles Ralph Hudson a 40-year veteran of land speed racing believes he can go faster today our lamb is also confident his motorcycle has far more [Music] it's a chess game until 4:00 p.m. neither rider wanting to go first there's no more time owls team places his bike on the salt it's now or never he has to go faster faster than he's ever gone and not by a small margin owl knows he has to put down big number [Music] his team can only wait al knows he has to put down and he does with a speed of 285 miles an hour Ralph strikes next and comes in with a speed of 281 miles an hour al comes to a stop right next to round who is preparing to run Al's time was 274 miles an hour it gives him an average time of 280 point three zero six miles an hour it's almost 20 miles an hour faster than the world-record time he came to Bolivia with but will it be a new Ralph steps off al can only wait he knows there's not enough daylight for him [Music] and then it's announced very seven yep you just beat us [Music] Ralph goes through the timing traps with an average time of 284 when 391 miles an hour a full 4 miles an hour faster now owl knows it's not a battle worth fighting if you don't have a challenger worthy of pushing you to your limits both are in their 60s both have no intention of quitting it's just not in their DNA [Music] we go
