hi everybody welcome to the Emery's memories channel I'm your announcer Gary Beatty this channel was created to feature interviews by Ralph Emery there are over 125 interviews by Ralph for you to enjoy on this channel this channel has also become a collection point for rare and in some cases never-before-seen shows and interviews what you're about to see is one of 14 classic interviews hosted by the Lagarde twins from Sydney Australia it's part of a TV series they created and it's called down-home Down Under now these interviews have remained of their private collection and they've never aired on radio or television until now let's watch as they sit down with Charlie pride welcome back to Maga twins down home down under now he is my brother Tom to tell you about our very special guest there is simply no substitute for high quality and style they are qualities which spend time and time is the most valuable thing anyone can spend in the music business quality and style are the touchstones upon which long careers are built such as the case of our very special guest you know Tom his vocal artistry and his unique style has translated into a broad-based appeal such as few artists have enjoyed and after two decades he is still performing and singing better than ever competing in the world of entertainment he is the very first artist ever to receive the prestigious Golden Apple Award for selling almost 2 million records in Australia alone is that fantastic Tom yes it is he's our very special guest the one and only Charlie pride Motor Show Charlie thank you - thank you nice to have you on the program here good to be here first of all you've just returned from a very vigorous and extensive USO - haven't you yes we we did we started off in Guantanamo Cuba and we went to - Puerto Rico Antigua Panama and in Honduras and I've only been back about four or five days did you really enjoy it that Charlie yes I enjoy because excuse me I was hours in the army myself and of course the last USO tour did was with Bob Hope and of course it was I mean abroad like that was in Guantanamo back in 71 and they did with vital blue that played baseball course here with with the Athletics at that time they might not remember him over and over and down under landing but the thing is is that you might have heard of the gold diggers yes Demark that's correct the Dean Martin you worked with Dean Martin and and especially one of the girls that have gone on from that go used to be won't be a gold digger it was Jane Kennedy as she might they might recognize that lame down she went on to be famous over here Charlie you love Australia don't you yeah I do and not just any one part I've been going down my about nine tours we've done about twenty some cities each time we've just as we said we just come back back March and April about 45 they tore down that's a long tour and just to share with it with the folks watching before we sat down here we were in a dressing room and we got to talking about a hit song down there that I've been everywhere here and nobody has ever recorded it as far as the Australian version is concerned far as an American artist recording the straighten version the our memory we talked about I'll send you those words okay Charlie are you still as nervous and excited about your career today as when you first started yes I really am it's a lot of people think that I'm just saying that for just just from a standpoint of for the talks sake just just just by saying but but I'll tell you when I go on stage and I think it's obvious to my fans that's why I think that I've been able to repeat so often in all the places that I've called not only down under but in all of the places around the world and that I've appeared and I think that becomes obvious to my fans when I go on stage because I do love what I do and I think that come across without saying it by by the performance that I that I put on every time I go because it's like someone said well don't you ever get tired of singing the same old song each night I said no I said because if I develop an attitude like well good it's one more show oh one more night I've got to do kiss an angel one more time off I got a kiss and I pretty soon if you start that kind of that kind of attitude will filter all into I believe in the whole the whole aspect of your career so consequently I don't let anything like that I don't have to worry about it because again what keeps me from doing that is that I do love what I do and that's the reason why and that's the reason why I believe that you can go back to places even yearly yes because when you go out there you perform like it's you it was a free you hunt we have to take a break right now but we'll be right back you know Rachel can Dottie try how many tours have you done in Australia now well about of about nine tours I think we started going down about 70 somewhere in early 70s about 71 72 how many dates or two do you do like well the last 80 45 we did the last one was about 40 but but we've done to see what happened all of those were not in Australia long we went over to New Zealand I mean we said we played like maybe about eight or ten of those was in use in New Zealand like Dunedin than Christchurch and and but I have gone down and stayed long enough to play like almost two months you take your family down when you got my wife my my wife goes with me and did she like it down there charlie oh yes yes you get to hold the Koala yeah yeah we went in fact the first time we went down we went out and I believe it was Melbourne we went we we went out and to the why I guess the zoo at night and I've held one I've got pictures of holding are they beautiful yes hey Charlie I know you've done many many interviews but even like your fans particularly in people that have followed your career over the years and you your dining up a lot of new fans how old were you when you actually said hey I really love country music that's what I want to do Helen when I was about probably five years old and who was your who did you idolized back well the big stars when I started listening was what I call the the biggies at the time they were the biggest at the time when I started listening that had an influence on me were were Roy Acuff Ernest Tubb Eddie Arnold the Grand Ole Opry at that time like in the late 40s early 50s that they they made the impression on me I mean right on through to Hank Williams and at this present time that's of course not only from the Grand Ole Opry but you see locally I was born about 54 miles below Memphis Tennessee which is about 200 about 275 miles from Nashville in mind my home is about 275 well the the station was a 50,000 watch station it had just beam riding at Saturday night so when we come out of the cotton fields of picking cotton I'd be listening to the Grand Ole Opry but and on weekdays out here station out of Memphis like wrec radio they'd come on I can give you it saved up your is he owned by Hart be Wooten and such and this is buck stuff he turned in his buckaroos and that's the guy that I remember listening to and guys like Gene Autry Wayne Rainey what did you think when you when you first heard your record on radio first Charlie pride record okay let me tell you we all sing I have seven brothers and three sisters we all sing and my brother that I'm next to we used to do kind of duets together when we were growing up and someday I hope that people will see my home will be able to see that I've been saying this but we all sing but I'm the only one has done anything of any great significance of success at this moment if you had a momma special but that's what that's one hopefully someday it'll happen you should jump do you ask me the question who when i first first of all it was this it was like it wasn't me it was it sound i said well that sound like my brother Mack yeah at first and then but slowly I started I guess it was one part of is that really did I really could recommend is that really me type of feeling you're saying and I want it and when I hear that very first song it takes me right back to those thoughts when you're a little boy lying in bed were you close to a railway line or where you could hear a no a train you went no I what did you envision as a little boy say seven or eight alright as to as to what Charlie pride would wanted to do or to become in his life okay I used to I was kind of a the people used to say to my dad that odd when I was the oddball I used to sit on the but I never thought I was odd I mean but everybody else did but it seemed like everybody else in it like I'd say to my dad the one that's saying that country music like him other people and none that kind of thing right saying the other people's music that sort of thing but the thing is is that I used to sit on the porch and I would look at the clouds and I would be to just walk on the clouds and maybe walk on the moon that kind of thing well now you got to understand you're daydreaming I'm daydreaming but but but see Darren under might not relate to what I'm going to say hey welcome what you see when they said you sing in their music you see the color situation comes into play here uh-huh color of my skin going around saying Italy Italy and it's F was odd you see so back in those days if I had to start talking to people and start really talking about walking on the moon and all because there's a lot of people you know don't believe we were right this day that but they didn't the mother you did it the individual so individually that didn't bother me now at that time because I've always been a total individual so that's what that's what I remember as a as you're very you're very unique Charlie and you know when you when you came to Nashville and you started putting out those hit records Nick you actually really did set a trend yeah and I'd say so yeah and and you had a unique style and I think that's one of the secrets to you yes to your success well I appreciate that and but I'll tell you when I first came to Nashville I mean you talk about nervous when I I tell people on stage right now I'm just I'm just as I said come off of the the USO tour and I told all those young sold using all I said and and I say this not just to them but when I go on stage I say this song I'm about to do for you now because usually I'll do this after I've done my show and I don't maybe I have an encore something this is the very first song that I did when I went to Nashville and I said you talk about nervous I was nervous as a cat on a hot tin roof and I and I said but if you listen to the song you might not detect that but every time I sing it I think about how my legs was going like this and it's the snakes crawl at night and I got thanks Claus actually could you look great you're big man physically how tall you were to six one six one big man and you had planes for being a baseball player but you've never gotten involved with drugs or alcohol or any of that stuff have you no because I well I used to drink but I could dry used to drink heavily well there was to hear because that's rock you get into the heavy no no no no drug but you see what I'm saying here is I consider I've now haven't taken a alcohol drink it would be three years pretty soon and I'm so glad I wish that'd quit I quit smoking fifteen years ago but let me tell you what I think helped me from ever trying drugs or anything like first of all I think I'll use the movie which I when I was very young I went to see was Frank Sinatra mm-hmm and Kim Novak in the manic old man with the Golden Arm uh-huh yeah he did such a performance of shakin when he needed a fix and all that although you know if someone told me said well he was just acting but that's usually the way the drawn the withdrawals you have when so as I grew up and then when I grew up I was about 19 years old I was in this bar I was too young my six out in Denver we're down under so don't row but but I I was offered that then they called him reefers but which I guess was marijuana at that time we call reefer Sun and I said no so that makes the next thing is when I was in Montana I'm just naming the things that kept you out of getting me out of it was a DJ in in Helena Montana where I went to play baseball and this has come I'm played baseball that's what took me to Montana but I start singing locally and when I could snakes crawl at night he came to me he said now if your record snakes probably night if it goes and you'd become an artist he said if you never remember anything else remember this if you get tired mm-hm put your head on a pillar and sleep he said advice because you'll always be able to sing your vocal chords will stay open what a great classic one-on-one interview with Ted and Tom the lagarde twins I want to tell you about their book the lagarde twins showbiz hustlers let me take you back to
