[Music] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Music] oh [Music] three [Music] hey good morning westmont welcome to chapel i just want to say everybody is doing a phenomenal job of today was the breakthrough as downloading the ride out getting scans that would be much more better um apple speakers that wednesday and friday actually sign up um i'm going to walk you through really quick so this is how this works you have an iphone you go to the app store and you look at that red crimson app if you have had an older version download a new one okay next if you have an internet okay so make sure you have the latest next download the new if i said that enough that's been the problem with a lot of them next that's what the app looks like it's been a problem next now once you get on there you look down at the bottom of the westmont pass you say get a new westbound pass you have to do this every day right this is how we do the next the kovic chef vaccinated as a child whatever okay you answer all those questions next then you get the westmore fast the top goes wild crazy and then it takes like 1.3 seconds for us to stand when those steps have been kept next if you have a dumb phone that's fine we'll be up there with the clipboard we'll know everybody's next it does not have a smartphone no problem no problem next monday there's not going to be any hey let them all live now we know so monday 10 30 the doors go okay so and here if you're out there awakening i'm scared welcome to chapel come let us worship and bow down let us kneel before the lord [Music] please foreign [Music] temples [Music] gently [Music] good [Music] is [Music] people [Music] and to be here with you in chapel this morning it's just always such a delight and pleasure to hear the sweetness of your singing and to hear and after a year not hearing it together wesley would have said all my heart i guess that's that's a good thing uh has the chair music and worship here at westmont i've been asked to speak pretty much annually on the nature purpose uh importance definition and qualities of worship that we honor and hope to build practices of here in this community that has taken on lots of different forms over 17 years since that sheriff was given to the college sometimes whimsical uh probably most often a combination of the two uh but there's something i want something a little different i was thinking about how to share that message with you and thought why talk about it so let's just practice it a little bit this morning i hope that the holy spirit might speak through that practice of worship and that it would speak to you and that you would find some ways this morning through that same spirit to hear and listen and think creatively and devotionally talkatively about worship fears is fond of saying that worship is everything we do all throughout all of our lives and it's absolutely true and we come together to focus on it we do what's called corporate worship we share it of worship acts of devotion acts of praise all of it uh being worshipped so for that we're going to do a different sort of worship this morning maybe one that you don't have experience with but it's really not going to be all that much different than a common context in many churches around the world many that we share in our traditions a musical reflection on the word on the message uh we'll do that here in a different way with a different musical language perhaps and one that may just catch their ear in a new and fresh way this morning but i want you to fully engage and worship together not just listen that's at full point for all worship activities that we engage with in chapel that's certainly a call this morning to come to so let's move out to let you just know a little bit about the creative mind and introduce the person whose work going into this work this morning gentleman um served the church all of his life uh what you might call it uh throughout most of his career he had two personal mottos one was jj you can see it up there left hand forward that manuscript of his work this is uh some music that he wrote for the passion of craft uh jj 10 for ufos this is what i do and just the right number of boxes on this uh tunic there was something about the numerology with which he thought about how to construct music very seriously at times because so i think he probably took great joy knowing how his music sounded um um as well so [Applause] what's what's particularly notable this morning is that he provides his creative gifts now concerns to the church to the glory of god with the help of jesus an amazingly productive creative musical career correcting multiple complete settings of the major events in the life of the church and the life of christ from an incredible story of christmas to three seventies of the pastor's story and and other easter oratorio also wrote music for a sequence of about five or six years of music for every something fresh so that you would come to chapter imagine that when writing three or four songs every service brand that you would prefer this when you would come in specifically written for that day so ever might put up in the morning at four o'clock oh it's stroking today that brings the image of storm today is midterms i'm gonna write songs today about and over 300 of them over four to six years standing with every week that would speak specifically to the message of the people coming into this beautiful church in leipzig germany st church that he served as well because he would jump and go from the thomas church to the nickelodeon church to the homeless church to do that so he had to do it and that's kind of how bob worked writing these new things so if you are a new song and catholic think well that's kind of cool on a weekly ball every circular basis in the day 300 some cantatas the one that was written for after christmas in 1714 a story about walking with jesus about walking the way of faith and that we have a typical 18th century work event has been transformed a little bit on my left today to a couple of cellos uh professors jean and ahn he'll be back there [Applause] and we'll alternate in the singing dialogue because in this cantata of jesus as an infant jesus coming into our world fully human and fully divine he gives the role of jesus to the bible and along the way they tell us this story now you might think that the baritone as the voice of jesus is singing about follow the path of faith it's like leaving a walk now in the opening piece which is called a sinfonia the musicians will play a fugue at the beginning and one of the deep in your mind and the idea behind the scripture text which is going to come from luke about two incredible followers of jesus that they were waiting for him to come and that's the story of jesus in the temple her song sings this word the stone the rejected it's held for a long long long time because it's weightly and it lasts and it's supposed to help you feel the seriousness and purpose of that stone wrote that sort of thing into all the all the messages of his music and wanted you to think that so we're going to hope that that is impactful for us this morning as well to frame that offering pastor is going to read the scriptures that would have been typical for that morning to set us up to take from with the quotes to take the story of jesus in the temple with simeon and anna uh and how they respond to that and also interpret what we call the epistle or the new testament lesson which would have been read in front of this cantata to say this is how we should work together we should live his community so instruction of how to listen how to be a part of something like this and finally the story of following jesus um start with this thing called an overture uh with the instruments about following each other in this feud and then a series of these songs including these two little bathrooms that are called repetitives it's sort of 18th century rap where the difference kind of goes along with a lot of text really fast with some underpinning music i think you'll catch on right away um you might not tap your foot as much as you would in contemporary but nothing a revelation that just opens up your eyes to whole new ways of listening and worshiping and being part of the holy spirit and action in the word some of you might scratch it and go hopefully well one short word of preparation is that applause is typically not a part of this tradition instead of applause thoughtful prayer is another good thing and the first way you can respond enthusiastically and connectively uh to the outpouring of god's word delighted that we can share this about once every four years we get to pour one of these out into the heart community this is your generational opportunity so grab it with gusto and now the word for this morning and it the lord is deaf very dead let us rejoice today and be glad lord save us in the name of the lord and the house of the lord we bless you the lord of god endures forever from the new testament with compassion kindness humility gentleness and patience bear with each other forgive one another grievance against them forgive as the lord forgave you and over all virtues put on love which binds them all together in perfect unity rule in your heart as a member of one point you are called for peace and thankful with the message of christ dwell among you ripley and admire one another with them through songs from the spirit singing to god with grace in your hearts and whatever you do whether in deed or word do it all in the name of the lord jesus giving thanks to god the father through him and to present them to the lord as it is written verse one may have to be consecrated in keeping with what's the law of the lord a paragraph or two young pigeons who was righteous and devout he was waiting for the conservation of israel jesus to do him the law required he took him in his arms and praised god saying sovereign lord every promise you may now dismiss your servant and is until she was 84. she never left the temple but worshiped night and day fasting and praying thanks to god and spoke about this looking forward to the redemption of jerusalem the word of the lord [Music] [Applause] [Music] me [Music] is [Music] is [Music] uh [Music] uh [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Applause] oh [Music] [Music] is [Music] is [Music] is [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] so [Music] so [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] is [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] uh
