all right so i'm here to do the timing belts on my ferrari 360 with the help of my nephew ran what are you 11 years old now yeah i'm 11 11. all right so the idea there's a couple of videos on youtube how to do this uh radarosa's one and i think sam rock is the other i'm not sure i'll put the some links down there so i i'm not doing a video on how to do it when i'm doing the video on maybe the things that they've left out also the show that just anybody can do this like i've had just a little bit of mechanical experience around how much experience have you had um all i've done was like take off a tire all right so that's like the max i've done if you can take off your tire you can change the timing belts on a ferrari so we're gonna see if we can do that yeah anybody can do this as long as you have youtube video yeah all right so to get to the engine we have to remove this panel this carpet here and the videos i've seen they just say remove it but they don't say how and so now we're just kind of figuring it out so we got these panels here and i've always been a little afraid to pull them off not knowing exactly what's holding them on i got real brave and finally took this one off and what i had to do is take off the seat belts that's what was holding it on is the seat belt thing here as soon as i took that off i was able to pull it off no no problems back here all this connected are these little plastic tabs so whoo that one worked out i'm going to be able to do the other one and be able to take that carpet off the way i've done it before is you kind of pull through the center and it kind of buckles out and it pulls out and then you kind of have to pinch it back in and it works just not very well yeah so all the videos talk about removing these seats to get to the engine it's entirely possible to do this with leaving the seats in it just makes it a little tight the reason why i took them out is that to take off this panel here you have to take off the panels over here and take those panels off you have to take off the seat belts and take those seat belts you have to remove them from the seats and when you get that far you might as well just take off the seats because it's just four easy bolts that's why i ended up taking off all the seats there's our timing belt isn't it birdie how's your hands let's see your hands i see the other side aren't they pretty i got my covers off now checking out my belts these things should have been replaced about 5 000 miles ago this one i thought it was kind of loose but all right whatever then come over to this one and it seems exceptionally loose so that's interesting so after rotating it by hand to get all the marked timing marks together the belts on this side tightened up but also if you look at the tensioner look at that huge gap we have on there now so hopefully that will all fix itself when i get the new belts on so as i'm turning into this i'm already finding two issues that i was not anticipating one underneath here which i believe is the water pump you see this little boat right here is all nice and corroded tells me that there's some type of leak you see it's kind of wet all around there so if i had known that i've i would have planned to replace that water pump but i don't have a water pump on me so that's going to be a future project the water pump is going to think it's about 500 dollars then behind the water pump is the heat exchanger those things are known to go out so if i'm gonna replace the water pump might as well replace the heat exchanger but that is like six hundred dollars or so so all together it's about a thousand dollars for parts i'm not quite certain that's gonna solve my problem but clearly i've got something going on in there that i gotta fix but that's gonna have to be kicked down the road right now i'm just concentrating on getting these belts replaced and i'm hoping that this here all this oil that i'm seeing in here is coming from the bearing because i don't know where else that could be coming from the other one where's the bearing there it is it also has some type of grease going on inside of it but everything else around it looks pretty dry so the other issue is i got to remove this plate but these though these bolts got stripped out uh so we're thinking we're gonna probably just cut this and hopefully twist it so that these bolts can come free and then replace this plate i bought the plate it's about a hundred and fifty dollars each one of these bolts is about five dollars for a little bitty bolt uh i guess it's nice to replace because i got this hole right there but another problem i did not anticipate in getting these timing bolts replaced [Music] so my big worry was whether or not this thing would just slide right off the two videos showed it just sliding off but my history says you need a pulley to pull it off so let's see it just slides off yay i'm so worried i see why though it's indexed well the other ones that i worked on were indexed too i just thought i was gonna need a pulley to get this thing off all right so one of the things scott neglected to talk about was the diameter of this little spacer he used he said how long it was but didn't save the diameter so looks about one and a half inch id on these things so get that and that's the size pipe you need so the people scott used a little probe on his phone to look at the timing marks in the back just to make sure they all aligned and i thought ah i'll just use my phone the camera or the video or something i can check with that way well it's it's easy to get those plates off but getting to those getting a good eye on those markings turned out to be a little more problematic so the next time i do this i definitely will get a probe and just just to confirm those lines all marked up technically i you know we don't have to you know get these marks all lined up it's just as long as the nothing moved then you're good to go but it's just a nice little check to make sure nothing moved during this process so another thing on scott's videos he talked about skinny i'm recording so another part in scott's video on his left bank he says that this pin won't go in and then he says at the end of the video i'll tell you how i solved this well yeah he after he got the thing off the car but what did you do until then like i didn't know if losing this thing if that thing go poo or what it would do because i didn't have a pin inside there so i did my other side and that went just fine so i went back to this side and then i loosened up this bolts just a little bit so then i went in there and then with that loosened you i actually can move this quite er well if i had both hands on there it moves quite it wasn't so bad but that wasn't my problem is actually that pin hole it like rotated you can hardly see it there but the shaft rotated and so that's why my pin wouldn't go through so i need to go back and rotate that so that the hole is aligned where it needed to be but it wasn't that bad [Music] question is why i run off these ramps just don't put in gear neutral here we go [Music] seems like it's doing all right it works success it works i can now have my garage back next week [Laughter] so the process should have been pretty easy but i ran into funny things so on this other side when i was taking off the belt it was loose uh and to put it on it was also loose and i thought well that's how it's supposed to be what it was is let's see here ah where's where are you at there this side here was loose and i thought okay it was like seemed like it was half a tooth off and i was going to just put it on half a tooth off and i did that so this side came on pretty easy this side over here just would not come on and so what it ended up doing was taking this thing off or rotating it took off one bolt and so the belt would come on and then i had to pry this thing up put the belt back on that's the only way i got the belt on but then it was off by like what i thought was half tube but i guess it was a whole tooth because my brother ben came and like worked it around the gear i guess it would be this way to get this side tight like it should have been the other problem i had was this belt which should have been a super easy belt because it's just the alternator belt but i could not get it around this thing and i had adjusted it all the way and it still was not enough it was just too tight and then i put the old belt on and it went on okay but this new belt is just so tight and uh what we ended up doing was putting it around like halfway on this and then we physically were like we pulled it until it worked its way all the way around this top pulley and that's how we got that belt on so that's some of the problems i've had then this cover here went on pretty good when i went to put on this other cover this is because we got this we got this we got this pipe over here i was manhandling it too much and i forced it and i broke it so we had to do some epoxies and get it all back together and so now it's been sitting for two days i'm gonna try to get that other cover back on without it breaking those are sort of little things that i'm running into well silly me the problem was this belt that i had worked so hard to put on let's get in the way of putting this thing in took off the belt i was able to finally slide that in a good notice when you are taking it off pay special attention to like how your took it off you know did you push it up here did you pull out here i couldn't quite remember so that took some trial and error to finally get that sucker back in so then the belt down here i loosened this pulley up all the way see how nice and loose it is and then that belt came out okay so now is uh going to be putting this up on what it is i you know you just get it off here and we kind of pulled it around and so i'm not gonna do that with one hand but that's the idea let's go all right so my back is gonna be here so just try to get the belt good and [Music] there we go awesome that's how we did it thank you all right so something i forgot to mention that scott also didn't mention was very convenience to mark the belt so you put a little mark on the belt and you put a little mark on the cam and put a mark in the belt put in a can and down here and then you count how many teeth are in between those and then how many down down there and then put the same marks on the new belt so that when you put them on you know you got the same amount of teeth in between these two cams and same amount of teeth between the drive down there and that's i should have i put the marks up here but i did not put the mark down here so when i had it all loose over here i couldn't tell that i have enough teeth the same as before so that's very helpful before taking off the old belt so here i am back in my garage the job is successfully completed with the help of my brother so it is entirely possible to do the job on your own as long as you have some experience working on cars i would never attempt this as your first project but it wasn't that hard to do just follow the instructions uh given on those youtube videos and you could do it save yourself three or five thousand dollars it wasn't that bad really so that's all
