have you ever heard of community-based participatory research yes that's a lot of words it's also known as cbpr come on let's go on a journey we'll learn what these words and letters mean dah dah dah welcome to another journey with Chris where we will obtain new levels of knowledge and awesomeness hello scholars today we're going to journey through cbpr which is community-based participatory research on our journey we're going to cover the basic description of cvpr why do CBPR and the steps of do of conducting cbpr we'll talk about the benefits and limitations of each step of this type of research cbpr is a collaborative type of research in which members of a community are treated as Co researchers throughout the entire research process and it has a goal to not only create knowledge but to also use that knowledge for action and social change within that community so why do cvpr well community members can often feel used by researchers in traditional research researchers come into a community they collect data go to their offices on college campus analyze the data write a report and get it published but the community it usually doesn't see any positive impact from the research study communities want real change to happen and not just be the subject of a study to be some kind of a guinea pig well in cbpr the community is not asked to be guinea pigs there has to be fellow researchers and participate the whole way through the study hence the word participatory in community-based participatory research as mentioned a second ago communities can feel fed up with participating in researchers in research when they don't really see any benefit from them well in CBP our research is conducted with the community to create new knowledge and to do something with that knowledge like create new programs or find the solution to a health problem in the community and apply that solution and as mentioned a second ago communities can feel like research guinea pigs and feel a real lack of trust because researchers come in get data and they leave and the community never sees the researchers again well in CBP our trust can be built between the researchers and the community because the two are working together the whole time through the study and they're trying to do something meaningful with the with the research findings let's talk about each step of how to conduct CDP and the strengths and limitations of each step first researchers have to form the research team they have to figure out who in the community would be interested in being research partners and collaborate in a research study here's the benefit of doing this by forming a team of community members as research partners there are greater odds that the community will take ownership of the research and not feel like guinea pigs and create real change in their community based from the findings here's the limitation it takes a long time to find willing committed community research partners and convince them that they can be important collaborators in a research study and it also takes a lot of time to build relationship with the community and build trust with that community next is to develop a research question researchers will work with community partners to discover what health issues are most important to the community here's the benefit of doing this since the research is center centered around what the community thinks is important the community will have a greater investment and commitment in the research project here's a limitation when the researcher what the researcher thinks is a community of people actually might not be viewed that way from the people they may not see themselves as a community well they wouldn't be good to work with because they're they're really not a community and the community might care less about research they really don't care it'd be hard to work with them because we're trying to do research right or they let's say that they do view themselves a community and they are interested in research but they want to study health issues that the researchers don't have enough resources for like money or certain technologies to collect data also there is a real chance the kit that the community might be interested in researching health topic that the researchers are not interested in let's say the researchers are interested in promoting physical activity but the community says we have a real drinking problem in this community we want to focus on studying that and trying to fix that so the researchers would have to give up their power in a sense and go along with what the community wants to do not what what the researcher wants to do the next thing is to write a grant proposal the researchers and community partners work together to write a grant proposal to get research money from the government or other foundations to fund the research study here's the benefit those who give away money for research projects are more likely to fund community research that already has support from community partners and the community partners are are helping to write the proposal here's the limitation it can take a lot of time to work with community partners to write a grant proposal it's a lot of heavy duty writing skills grant proposals are hard to write and we're relying on working with community partners to help write those proposals the next is to design the research methods the researcher works with community partners to develop research methods that would give the most benefit to the community here's the benefit of this the community will feel more trust of the research and be more willing to participate and feel like they're creating methods that will produce knowledge so they're not feeling like guinea pigs and to produce knowledge that's going to best benefit the community the limitation of this the research methods you have to kind of know stuff about research methods and we're relying on working with community partners to create these research methods so they might not be the most scientifically rigorous methods so it might take a lot of time to negotiate the methods with the community to come up with the best research methods that are scientific and will still benefit the community and do what the community wants the next is participant recruitment the researchers rely this is when the researchers rely on the community partners to show them the best way of recruiting the right people from the community for the study here's the benefit of this it's easy to recruit people for a study if you have someone on the inside who will help you to recruit these people and those being recruited or recruited in a more culturally dignified way instead of just being recruited in a way as oh I'm going to be a research subject for a study here's the limitation of this the way that the community partners want to do recruitment it might be more expensive and more time-consuming than what was planned by their researchers the next step is data collection the researchers work at the community partners to find out what survey items and interview questions would be most appropriate for the community and the community partners helped to collect the data here's the benefit the surveys will be less like well less likely to be offensive or confused community partners because people community uh the partners help write those survey items and those interview questions so it's culturally relevant to the community here's a limitation it takes a lot of time to work with the community partners to create these survey and interview questions and to work with them to collect data also the scientific rigor of the study can be at risk if the community insists on survey and interview questions that might not have the best science behind it next step data analysis and interpretation this is when the researchers work with the community partners to analyze the data and interpret what the findings mean here's the benefit the community might feel that the findings are more accurate since the community partners helped analyze the data and researchers are less likely to be criticized from now analyzing the data with them from the cultural view of that community here's the limitation it can take time to teach community partners how to analyze data and since community partners are not scientists they may interpret the study's findings in a different way than the researchers and they may have biases when looking when analyzing the data so it may be difficult to negotiate with the community partners how to finalize what the findings mean next step research dissemination dissemination means spread around to others what the what you found in your research studied is to spread around let everyone know what you found in your study well researchers work with community partners to disseminate the study's findings which can be done in several ways such as academic journals presentations to the academic world or the community newspaper articles the radio television and on and on the benefit of this is that the community partners can feel pride in helping to know that they helped to write and disseminate the study's findings and the final report or the dissemination of findings is probably more accurate and showing what the community is like and what the community found from the study's findings here's a limitation it takes a lot of time to train community partners how to write academically and how to work with the partners in deciding what information should be included in the studies final report in conclusion cbpr is a type of research that includes community partners in each step of the research process
