god's word and in the holy eucharist proclaim the victory of jesus over death until he comes in glory [Music] the grace of our lord jesus christ the love of the father and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all with your spirit good morning and as we gather to celebrate eucharist i'd like to introduce you and welcome father ejinardu he just arrived from brazil recently speaks english italian and portuguese he is of the shalom catholic community you've heard me speak of them before actually our elector and server are from the shalom casa community also malu and daniel father edunardo goes by the name eddie father eddie um because it's we know we realize it's difficult for us americans to wrap our our lips and tongues around different languages and so it is also easier that's why people call me father walter instead of carrero it's just an easier way to speak but today we celebrate the memorial of saint john chrysostom and we know that his name chris system means golden mouse given to him because he was a tremendous orator he was also a great writer a prolific writer and so we remember him and ask for his intercession as we celebrate this mass as we prepare ourselves to celebrate this eucharist we turn to our father in heaven who is full of gentleness and compassion as we remember our sins you were sent to heal the contrite of heart lord have mercy lord have mercy you came to call sinners christ have mercy christ have mercy you are seated at the right hand of the father to intercede for us lord have mercy lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to life everlasting amen amen let us pray o god strength of those who hope in you who wills that the bishop saint john chrysostom should be illustrious by his wonderful eloquence and his experience of suffering grant us we pray that instructed by his teachings we may be strengthened through the example of his invincible patience through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever a reading from the first letter of saint paul to timothy beloved first of all i ask that supplications prayers petitions and thanksgivings be offered for everyone for kings and for all in authority that we may lead a quiet and tranquil life in our devotion and divinity this is good and pleasing to god our savior who wills everyone to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth for there is one god there is also one mediator between god and men the man christ jesus who gave himself as a reason for all this was the stat the testimony of the proper time for this i was appointed preacher and apostle i am speaking the truth i'm not lying teacher of the gentiles and faith and truth it is my wish then that in every place the man should pray leaving up holy hands without anger or argument the word of the lord blessed be the lord for he has heard my prayer blessed be the lord for he has heard my prayer hear the sound of my pleading when i cry to you lifting up my hands toward your holy shrine blessed be the lord for he has heard my prayer the lord is my strength and my shield in him my heart trusts and i find help then my heart exalts and with my song i give him thanks blessed be the lord for he has heard my prayer the lord is the strength of his people the saving refuge of his anointed save your people and bless your inheritance feed them and carry them forever blessed be the lord for he has heard my prayers hallelujah god so loved the world that he gave his only son so that everyone who believes in him might have eternal life the lord be with you reading from the holy gospel according to saint luke when jesus had finished all his words to the people he entered capernaum a centurion there had a slave who was ill and about to die and was he was valuable to him when he heard about jesus he sent elders to the of the jews to him asking him to come and save the life of his slave they approached jesus and strongly urged him to come saying he deserves to have you do this for him for he loves our nation and he builds the synagogue for us jesus went with them when he was only a short distance from the house the centurion sent friends to tell him lord do not trouble yourself for i am not worthy for you to have you enter under my roof therefore i did not not consider myself worthy to come to you but say the word and let my servant be healed for i too am a person subject to authority with soldiers subject to me and i say to one go and he goes into another come here and he comes and to my slave do this and he does it when jesus heard this he was amazed at him and turning said to the crowd following him i tell you not even in israel have i found such faith when the messengers returned to the house they found the slave in good health the gospel of the lord there's a lot to unpack today first of all today is september 13th and so i remember my grandmother who 21 years ago passed away on this date um the 13th of any month is important for us portuguese because 13 the day the 13th day was the day that mary appeared from may until october except for the month of august on the 13th and so how could even friday the 13th be unlucky as my mother once told me but i remember my grandmother who had a great face as this man does we heard in the first reading how the church has gone beyond just praying for jesus to come we still do that we still expect the imminent coming of jesus however paul is teaching the people that we nearly to learn to pray for our society for those around us and so he encourages them to pray for their leaders pray for those in authority but never to forget praying for those in need that is our mission that is our baptism to care for the other especially those most in need especially those in need of healing in need of love in need of care in need of a touch in need of love we hear that in the gospel today don't we this follows immediately after the sixth chapter of luke in which jesus has come down and on the plane is teaching the people he is teaching his disciples the plan for getting into heaven thou shalt not do this thou should do this they should live this way if one wants to get into heaven and at the end of chapter 6 he says why do you say to me lord lord and ignore what i ask you to do why do you call me lord when you don't have faith in what i'm teaching you and what i'm saying and then we enter this chapter and we find a gentile a centurion someone who is a member of the roman empire who has hundreds of men hence the word centurion from 100 at his command he also has authorities over him who tell him what he needs to do what he needs for living the life of a good roman and yet and yet this centurion has heard about jesus he is a friend of the jews he even helps them build the synagogue imagine in those days a roman someone who is important in the empire helping helping those who are below them were being oppressed by their empire by their emperor he goes beyond himself and helps them building a synagogue and so the jews that he sends to jesus because he doesn't feel that he is worthy to go himself first of all because he's as a gentile he knows this is a holy man a rabbi and he does not want to defile him even though he asks him to come to his house and so they say this man deserves your help who of us deserves god god's help it's only because of his love and his mercy that god hears our prayers that jesus hears us and we plead for one another and perhaps for ourselves so this man the centurion finally realizing if jesus comes into my house he will become defiled and so he sends others and says lord do not trouble yourself just say one word and my servant will be healed for i am not worthy that you should come into my home isn't that what we say every time we celebrate the eucharist lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and i shall be healed because a word from jesus christ is enough for us and this man recognizes this he wasn't there maybe he was on the plane and he heard jesus's words perhaps not because he was concerned about his servant and was home with him but either way he knew the power of jesus christ he knew that he was a holy man he knew that he had control over things like illness possession and eventually we know over death and so he asks him to come but yet says but don't enter into my house just say a word one word i have enough faith that what you say will happen jesus is so amazed it says that he was amazed he was marveled at the faith of this man who had faith in jesus without even having seen or heard him perhaps how strong is our faith in jesus how strong is our face when we pray or more importantly when we ask someone else to pray for us or for an intention that we have for some need that we have or a loved one has how strong is our face that just one word will do what we've asked jesus we've asked others to ask jesus i think it's always better to ask someone else to praise and that why we do that would you pray for this would you pray for that anytime anyone ever asked me to pray for something i'd always ask my mom mom so and so need your prayer so i'm sure she's up there hearing whenever anyone asks me for a prayer and she says oh walter needs my help that person needs my help that's what we do that's who we are john chrysostom was an eloquent preacher he went beyond himself he gave of himself so much so that he was persecuted and exiled he died in exile but nothing stopped him from loving god from loving christ and from proclaiming him with such great eloquence writing so much about that love and the teachings of jesus and so let us look to john chrysostom to inspire us to be preachers of the word of god jesus himself to go beyond ourselves to love to pray to have faith stronger than anything else in the world or beyond gathered together in prayer we offer the lord these petitions knowing that in his love and mercy he hears us for mutual respect and care among people of different faiths we pray lord hear our prayer for peaceful resolution of invasions occupations in place of conflict we pray for humility among those who exercise military power we pray for reptains for slavery and registration of its victims we pray lord hear our prayer for healing of body and spirit for those who are ill we pray lord pray for life among all people of good will for those who have gone before us we pray for all those faithful departed that we hold in our minds and our hearts in a special way i remember my grandmother who passed away 21 years ago today we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer almighty and living father we place ourselves in your heart knowing that through your love you hear our prayer we ask you to grant them according to your love when we ask this through christ our lord amen [Music] is for us [Music] [Music] okay [Music] pray sisters and brothers that our sacrifice may be accepted by the lord our god and accept the sacrifice in our hands we praise the glory of his name o god strength of those who hope in you who willed the bishop saint john chrysostom by his sacrifice which we gladly present in commemoration of him be pleasing to you o god for taught by him we too give ourselves entirely to you and praise through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord for as on the festival of saint john chrysostom you bid your church rejoice so do you strengthen her by the example of his holy life teach her by his words of preaching and keep her safe in answer to his prayers so with the company of angels and saints we sing the hymn of your praise as without and we acclaim oh oh oh [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you [Music] in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the road and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and sean our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with the blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have blessed you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to pray our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever amen the peace of the lord be with you always enrich your spirit lamb of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us lamb of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us lamb of god you take away the sins of the world grant us peace behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof hmm [Music] oh lord i am not worthy that thou shoulds come to me but speak the words of comfort my spirit heal shall be o come all you who labor in sorrow and in pain come eat this bread from heaven by peace and strength regain o sacrament most holy o sacrament divine all praise and all thanksgiving be every moment [Music] let us pray grant o merciful god that these mysteries we have received as we commemorate saint john chris system may confirm us in your love and enable us to be
