[Music] hello and welcome to the photography channel i'm nadja cooper and i'm afraid today i'm going to get on my soapbox about the software capture one which is created and put together by the company phase one now there's a couple of things that have annoyed me in recent months about this company now i'm pretty sure that all the capture one fanboys are gonna basically flame me and leave comments below but before you do remember i'm a capture one user too and i've been using this software for a couple of years and when i bought it two and a half years ago i paid three hundred dollars so just like you i use this software also but i'm going to basically be going to given a couple of comparisons between the raw conversion quality of capture one and affinity photo now this isn't a plug for affinity photo because like i said i own and use both these software packages now the first thing that's annoyed me about this company is i quite often use hasselblad cameras and capture one does not support hasselblad files now the reason for this is because capture one is made by phase one and phase one make their own medium format cameras so as a nana they don't allow hasselblad users to use their software in the hope that all those hasselblad users will ditch and sell their beloved hasselblad cameras and buy phase one cameras instead which is never going to happen now if the board of directors that were in charge of this stuff at phase one basically thought well hang on let's just add support for hasselblad because that way a lot of hasselblad owners and users will buy our software but they don't see it that way and as usual it's the end user the purchaser the photographer people like you and i who suffer because of these in contests between different companies so that's one thing that's annoyed me about about catch one now the next thing that's annoyed me is their price structure like i said it's about two and a half years ago that i paid 300 for this and now it's probably a good time for me to jump onto the computer and explain a little bit more about what i'm talking about okay so i've got these two images up on the screen but i'm going to come back to that in a minute for now i'm just going to show you the pricing options and i've got a text document here so i can just quickly refer to that now this is basically going to show you how much these packages cost over a three year period so we've captured one it cost 299 or 299 to buy it outright so over a three year period it's gonna cost 697 now how is that you're probably wondering well because it's 299 to buy the package outright and then when you want to upgrade it's going to basically cost you pound every year to upgrade it now a few years back capture one had i think it was called catchy 112 maybe 13 if i remember correctly but they jumped right up to capture one pro 20. now the reason they did that was to tie in with the year 2020 which would lead you to believe that lo and behold when 2021 comes around they're going to bring out capture pro 21 which they did and in 2022 i can guarantee that they will bring out capture pro 1 version 22. now each time they do this for me i've actually hidden my key code at the top here it's just out of screen but i've actually typed in my details and if i want to upgrade from capture one pro 20 to version 21 it's going to cost me 199 pounds now considering the software was only 299 to start with and i did even have some sort of voucher discount code on that as well so i think i only paid 200 pound for it it's actually costing me the same thing again just a year later so over here on this test edit document you can see that you buy the software for 2.99 and then over another two years you add another 400 pound nearly and it's going to basically cost you this amount over three years now if you go for a subscription package um you can actually subscribe to this and you can buy it for 19 pound a month on the subscription model that's just for the software only so again over the same period of time it's going to basically cost you 684 pound which is quite a lot when you compare that to adobe's offerings now adobe with lightroom it's been the industry standard for years everybody knows lightroom in photoshop and on here as you can see adobe do this photography plan for just 9.98 a month which is less than half the price of um capture one subscription package here which is 19. well maybe not less than half but it's certainly half anyway at 9.98 and for that you get lightroom you get lightroom classic you get adobe photoshop photoshop for ipads and you also get adobe spark you get the portfolio adobe portfolio if you want to build a website and lo and behold you even get 20 gigabytes of cloud storage space so you get all this for just 9.98 a month so with adobe over three years you're paying 359 pound 28 in subscription fees and you get a whole load more lots more um again with capture one you're just getting this one piece of software for 19 pound which isn't good and then like i said every year when they bring out a new one you've got this upgrade fee of 199 pound which is in my opinion extortionate now just as a little aside affinity photo which is kind of a cross between um capture one pro and photoshop mixed is just at the moment 23.99 it's normally 48.99 but they've always got this deal on so many months of the year you'll see this for just 23.99 and if you don't know affinity photo again it's not a plug i'm not affiliated with any of these companies i bought all this software it's um from what i can see affinity photo does everything that capture one does and then some it actually does more it's actually got this really great um in fact let me just flip over now to this software packages here that you can see i've got these two side by side um it's got this tool up here called a liquify persona which capture one doesn't have the liquify persona is similar to the liquefied tool in photoshop it allows you to straighten jawlines and ears and things like that now the reason i wanted to show you these two images is because i've got a little screen grab here from a forum post where somebody's basically said and if you think affinity photo is in the same league as a raw converter i can recommend an excellent option so let me just sort of get rid of that and here i'm going to prove otherwise on the left here as you can see top left of the screen i've got catchy one pro 20 and if i click on the right side we've got affinity photo now all i've done with both of these images is minimal tweaks basically in um in affinity photo here on the right i've just adjusted the white balance ever so slightly and the colors i just gave it a minuscule adjustment the trifle of adjustment and the same here on the left i just basically brought the kelvin down just a tad and i've shifted the tint just to trifle just to get the colours to look in the right kind of ball path now something i did have to do with capture one i did have to drag the highlights down quite a long way because when it was doing its raw conversion there was some blown out highlights here around the face along this bit and just under the eye now with affinity photo the raw conversion didn't do that and i didn't have to adjust the highlight slider at all so one nil there to affinity photo now in terms of colors the way affinity photo rendered the colors out after the raw conversion is it basically leans slightly towards yellow it's going slightly towards the colder hue whereas um capture one on the left leans slightly towards a warmer hue almost like it's a hint of a magenta cast whereas affinity first has maybe got a hint of yellow cast so all i did with the colors here i just basically shifted that yellow a little bit towards a warmer hue and with capture one on the left i shifted the warmer hue slightly towards a cooler one just to get them to match up just a little bit so in terms of what i've done it's minimal it's a basic raw conversion and from here you would basically go forth and start adjusting your colors your tones you would put in your s-curve or whatever you're going to do you do a bit of skin toning adjust the contrast and saturations and all those kind of things you'd go on from this basic point to do those extra things but what i also want to look at here is now is the detail that we have in this picture so what i want you to concentrate on on the left here if you look at this straight eyelash here where i'm mousing around this is just an eyelashes basically falling onto her cheek you can see it quite clearly in catchy one but over here on the right you can also see it quite clearly in affinity photo same for down here on the left if you look at these stray little hairs what i like to call like to call peach hair that some ladies have there's a few little stray hairs here again down here on the right hand side on the finished photo we can see them perfectly clearly again over here just under the eye here under the glasses we have this little blemish and we have this tiny little white mark on the lip again affinity photo we got that little blemish here and we have that tiny little white mark if you look at the detail in the hair the strands of hair up here on the right in capture one they're all nice and clear and sharp again on the right with affinity photo they're all really sharp and clear there's no difference i can see if you look here at the eyebrow these little hairs coming up i'm spiking up here over here on the right hand side they're still spiking up and i can still see them just as clearly any detail in the eyeball here little bits of reflections tiny little veins i can see them just as well equally on both same for the eyelashes here on the eyelashes here and any detail in fine peach hair on the face here on the cheek is still visible here with affinity photo so as you can see that basically debunks the myth that capture one is a superior raw converter because i've just done a basic raw converter side by side here and to my eyes and bearing in mind this is zoomed in a few hundred percent it's negligible there's nothing in it that i can see okay so what else do we have um just going back here i've compared the plans i've basically showed you what they cost affinity photo is only 23.99 normally just 48. you can see here the package prices and how much they cost you in the long run so for me i'm thinking capture one are basically ripping people off at the moment when you can get a complete adobe suite for half the amount for basically 10 pound a month instead of 20 or you can just basically buy affinity photo outright for 23.99 right now the upgrade fees for capture one at 199 pound a year and like i said they do bring out an upgrade every year and it's not even what i would call a major update even apple don't do this when apple have their small point or dot updates their free downloads and that's their major software packages not just the operating system but things like final cut pro and what else have we got here logic pro which i also use on the mac they do these little dot updates for free they only charge for a major update when they bring one out which isn't every year like what capture one are doing so for me the latest version of catch one pro 21 the updates they've done doesn't really justify a major update there's it's to me it's more a dot update and that should be a free update i don't like the idea of paying 200 pound a year to keep this thing up to date okay so that brings me to the end of the video um as usual these are my own personal thoughts and feelings on it so don't shoot the messenger i'm just putting across the facts you can take from it what you like um again i'm still a capture pro user i'm using capture pro version 20 at the moment will i upgrade to 21 no i can't see the point in spending 199 pound just to get a small few extra lines of code that are going to allow me to use a fuji camera at the end of the day i can just download the fuji software and use that for free anyway so that's what i'm going to do will i upgrade to a future version of capture one pro maybe 22 or 23 who knows i'll have to wait and see if there's anything worthwhile in it that i will actually need okay you've been watching the photography channel i'm roger cooper thanks very much for stopping by hope to see you again real soon bye for now you
