good afternoon or good morning everybody welcome to day two today's live session where it's always good fun when we get to talk about something new because today we launched an update to the current version of capture one so that's capture 121 just to be clear 14.3 in release number terms so that means it's available to any of you on a subscription uh or a perpetual license and it's free to update so no worries there about having to pay for anything it's available to all of you and all you need to do is just hop over to capture1.com and download the update and you're good to go and now what we're going to do is look at all the new stuff that we have in this release so just to put up this summary on screen we have a magic brush which is a super awesome way to create complex masks on your pictures in just a few clicks and we shall have a look at examples of that we've got the new exporter so unifying our various different export processes into one dialogue to simplify it make it easier to use but without removing any of the flexibility which is of in course of course important i just saw a comment uh whiz past um andrew that said show photos in subs folders function i'm done i'll finally bite well andrew hold that thought um and then also some tethering improvements and camera and lens support to talk about as well so a whole bunch of fun stuff now there is rather a lot of you on this live stream uh spread over uh facebook and youtube so we do our best to answer as many questions as possible if we don't get to all of you i do apologize uh we won't necessarily be able to answer every single question so today's really just a bit of an overview if you want to dig deeper you can watch the tutorials you can of course talk to us on support and so on and so forth okay so let's look at uh the new exporter first of all so let's move over to capture one i'm just going to switch collections for a second and select some pictures for exporting so for those of you who've known uh capture one for a while um perhaps you didn't discover it or perhaps you didn't know but there was actually two places uh where you could um export from capture one so you kind of had the quick and dirty method which was up here in the export dialogue and then you also had process recipes which was on a tab here which has now been removed now some people found one some people find the other and there was bit confusion over which was the best method to use and so forth so the idea is is to simplify and move everything into one export dialogue but no functionality has been removed that's important to point out should actually be a lot easier for you to get on and use it so we've got eight pictures here that we want to export so first of all we're going to hit the export button and the first change that you're going to see is that it takes you into a new dialog now this looks somewhat similar to the import dialogue except of course we're now exporting if you have already created some existing recipes i saw a comment with piles from juan carlos they of course are going to be visible here as well so we don't remove any custom recipes that you have made so you're going to see those in the export recipes at the top little thing it's renamed to export recipes not processed recipes because there was this confusing language between um process export develop all that kind of stuff so they are now called export recipes but if you've made some existing process recipes they're not going to be removed they're going to be right there so don't panic about that now the first dialogue that you see also has a slightly simple simplified view so we can see our location tool more about that in a second naming format and size and then a basic summary and of course as we click through to a few of these recipes then this changes exactly as it did before so each recipe has its own individual parameters for export so if you want to do a jpeg and tiff at the same time of course you can do that again no change there if we want to see all options so the full smorgasbord of different things that we can do we can click the show all options box and then we get the ability to add watermarks metadata and a few other bits and pieces as well but without show all options then you get the smaller simplified view as you can see here now couple of uh important things to point out so with the export recipes uh the location can be independent for each recipe now before it was kind of a shared uh option if you like or you have the file tab in uh in the output tool which again wasn't particularly intuitive or or easy to figure out so now we've got the potential that each recipe can have its own location or it can share a global location so what you're going to see is in the location tool when you first fire up capture one is obviously a choose dialog so if i just go ahead and say choose and then just pick my pictures folder as an example then it's going to load it up here and now you can see if we just flick through a different couple of different recipes we've got the catalog default as shown now next to that is a little tiny icon which allows us to change the catalog default so all your recipes can share a default or any of your recipes can have their own location so you've still got that level of flexibility there as well now if you want to change the shared default location at any point we can just click this box and then we can change it or of course on any particular recipe like let's just pick this instagram recipe if i don't want it to use the shared default i can choose its own personal folder here as well i saw a comment that was uh popping up on the tutorial i think it was someone who always liked to save their pictures in the same location as the raw file you can still do that with the same as original file option as well so nothing has changed there in that respect so they can all share a location or they can have their own individual location or you can write to the same location of the pictures folder so simple as that so that's just a couple of bits that you need to know about also the ability to add a subfolder is still there as well and also the ability to use tokens if the more experienced ones of you know how to use those is also entirely possible as well now something the keynote eyed ones of you might have noticed is that as i've flicked through these various different recipes my viewer is changing why is that because now this export viewer is constantly proofing the changes in my recipe so this uh particular one is resizing to 800 pixels as you can see on the long edge so therefore now capture one gives me a representation of how that's going to look so if i want to add things like output sharpening i'll turn on my show all options then we can see under adjustments that's where we can add output sharpening for screen print and so on so that viewer is constantly proofing all the time so you know exactly what you're going to get from that export recipe now if you not bothered or you've got your recipes tuned in you don't need to see exactly how they proof you can always turn the viewer off here and then you'll just see a grid of photos like so so each recipe as i saw my buddy on capture one pro one of my colleagues each export recipe has its own individual settings including the naming tokens so you can be just as flexible as it was before okay the other exciting thing that i want to mention is if we scroll up a bit and we look at existing files i think this is probably in our top three or top five requests of thing to add which is how do we handle um existing files so currently in capture one if we export the same file twice let's see we let's say we've exported these eight pictures and decided you know what i just want to edit something just change the adjustment slightly or whatever move the watermark a bit and so on and i export them once again then capture one would add just an underscore one uh after it and then you'd have to go and find the existing files and delete them and so on so now we actually have uh an option to overwrite so we can add suffixes before which we'll just put underscore one at the end we can overwrite them or if you're just you know doing a few and you want to make sure that you don't overwrite anything then you can skip anything that's existing there as well so if you're anything like me you tend to export a bunch of stuff and then just decide that you know what i can improve this slightly this just streamlines the workflow a little bit as well i saw an interesting comment from matt please add uh options back to having it as a tool as i don't need to go into the full export window every time the good news is matt you don't actually have to do that either so let's say you know we're working through these photos you've got your export recipes dialed in and you just need to export so you've got a couple of options matt don't worry if we look at the export button up here notice there's a little down arrow next to it which gives rise to some extra options so export will take us into the dialogue that we just looked at set a shortcut key for that if you wish you can also say export with previous settings so map once you've got it dialed in you can just hit command d and then it will use all the same settings as before so if you're working through your backlog of pictures editing and exporting then you don't need to go into that dialog each time so that's really important also is another option if you right click over here you'll also find an export option which has those same options in there too so if we'd exported these pictures and then we had you know a few more underneath to export i could right click and just simply say export with previous settings like so so the ability to export without entering the dialogue totally exists andrew seems to have to start and manifest show photos in subfolders we're going to get to that andrew don't worry it's all perfectly fine all right um just want to check my notes to make sure i haven't missed anything but you know that's pretty much all there is to it it's not a lot different than it was before we've got the added benefit of the proofing viewer we've got independent naming and location for recipes if you wish or they can share their default dialogue you can see all options or keep it a little bit simpler without needing to look at all of those and then you've got exactly the same abilities as you have before with metadata watermarking adjustments and so on and so forth if you just want a proof will without opening and opening another panel then you can do so as well you can still proof uh to your recipes so you can either add uh if we look at customize toolbar we haven't taken that away you've got recipe proofing and you can also see there's a little down arrow and then you can decide which recipe you want to prove to as well so if you want a proof without going into that dialogue you can also do that as well so ed don't panic i did answer you before as well it is definitely available and also enhanced somewhat you can actually pick the recipe that you want to proof with as well okay um progress bar so alex is asking yep so after i've you know initialized my export then the activities window will actually also show you what's going on in terms of export and we can also cancel out from that if you wish as well but remember export is a background task so you don't have to sit and wait for it to finish you know if we just let's just export a picture for the sake of it let's just go for a let's just go for a full size jpeg why not um and let's just export that out so when we hit export then the window disappears and then the export initiates and then we see the activities menu like so now if there was a lot of uh photos exporting then obviously that activity menu would be up for longer and then you could cancel out if you wish but you don't have to sit and watch it it is a background task don't forget okay that's a good summary i think of the new exporter of course if you want to know more watch the tutorial visit the support site there's a whole written tutorial there as well reach out to us at support as well but i think once you get into it and start using it you'll definitely see uh the benefits of doing so all right shall we have a look at um the magic brush because that's pretty exciting so let's move to a different location and check out the magic brush so before i do that i need a quick drink magic brush why have we done this because you could argue already in capture one there is lots and lots of different ways to create masks so we can draw them with our hand we can use the luminosity mask we can use the color editor we can use an auto mask so why add you know if you like yet another way to create masks but let's take a look at this example this is from one of our ambassadors blake pope very nice shot as you can see sorry it's just zooming in a little bit there randomly sorry now let's say we wanted to do some adjustment with these petals maybe you want to sharpen them up add some clarity control the highlights or whatever but we want to isolate these petals so first of all you could say well that's easy david they are nice and bright we could isolate that with a luminosity mask so let's try that so let's make a new field adjustment layer so we can see that let's use our grayscale mask little side note options for changing the mask now appear here in the viewer like so and let's turn on luma range so we want to isolate those petals which which were at the higher end so if i try and do that then i can squeeze that down but i can't really do a good job of isolating them because they're sort of in a similar tone now i could start just brushing a mask on there and do the same thing and i would probably get there but i've got to draw a mask i've got to enter the loom range i've got to adjust the loom range and then i've got to apply it and be happy with what i've done so in that situation it's a bit of a longer drawn out process so what about the color editor could we use that so if we go to the color editor and go to advanced let's reset that grab my color picker and then try to pick a color tone here now the color editor just inherently in the way it's designed it it's designed to pick out a color now with this example here if i just click on the leaves for example it can pick up a tiny bit of something but it's not substantial enough to say when to create a mask layer like so it's not quite there it's not bad but it's still not a convincing mask and i need to do a little bit of cleanup here and so on so there's a few clicks involved so enter the magic brush which has a lovely new icon here like so if you want to set up a shortcut for it you could irene oh i think you won't asked that question um earlier and we get a new looking cursor now if i right click you'll see a few options for this size and opacity which you know tolerance and refine edge top refine edge we're going to come back to i'm just going to leave that roughly around here tolerance is how broad of a pixel range is it going to pick up based on where i draw and you'll see how it works in a second so let's keep the tolerance relatively low we'll look at a couple of other examples to see in better how that works and first of all i'm going to make sure that my mask is visible and we're just going to zoom in a little bit so that you guys can see better what's going on and all you need to do is do a little scribble or a doodle or whatever you want to call it onto the area that you want to mask and then capture one will pretty much fill in the gap so it's going to pick up everything within that tolerance range of those same pixels until it hits an edge if you like now the process is additive so if i want to add you know we've just got to fill in the gaps here so i just brush that and we're done and that's two clicks to get to you know a pretty convincing mask just on those petals alone so now if i hide my mask with the m brush and then we can free to do what we want so i could add a bit of contrast we could add some clarity i'm going to pull my highlights back and so on you get the idea but that was two clicks to do a pretty convincing mask if we look at our grayscale mask which we can see up here then you can see how nice it is as well see how the edges look pretty good it's bleeding off nicely so that's a very tricky mask to do by hand in two clicks as you could see now with the auto mask you could argue ah well you could draw around the edge with the auto mask i tried it on this shot and it really doesn't work that great i'd still need to do some clean up and so on so it's all about creating a quality mask in a fast amount of time uh just looking at some of the comments uh magic brush is amazing saves millions of minutes yup we uh we hope so too and a good old wow um let's now okay updating all right let's have a look at uh a couple of options as well so this was shot on a fuji xt something something something xt4 okay so let's go to this shot which was shot on a phase one iq 150 so this was from blake one of our ambassadors blake pope this is from paul reefer one of our ambassadors as well and you're going to see something slightly different here when i create the magic brush so this photo already has some existing layers on it so if you have some existing layers you're going to want to create a new layer first i'm just going to call this mb for magic brush because otherwise it's going to affect the current layer that you pick so if you already have some existing layers make a new layer first let's grab our magic brush i'm going to make it a little bit bigger let's just stick with that tolerance and make sure our mask is visible and draw on the picture like so and now this is going to take a little bit longer and you might see calculating magic brush mask so we've gone from lesser pixels on the xt4 to 150 megapixels on the iq4 so the first time you do a magic brush swipe it's going to take a little bit longer to calculate now we want to fill in some gaps i'm going to go over here which as you can see was much much quicker because we've already got the data that we need to build the magic brush and then i can fill in a few other bits let's grab the mountains as well so now we've got a pretty convincing mask which i can then use to add some clarity to that part of the photo so if you do see that calculating magic brush mask at first it's perfectly normal it just depends you know how many megapixels how powerful your computer is how long is it going to take to do those initial calculations to be able to create the magic brush mask but it's only a one shot wonder so you know that's done now essentially okay um what are we gonna do next so i just saw a comment that said something about oh let's pick up leon's can you change the refine edge once the mask has been drawn once it's been drawn you can use the refine edge tool anyway so we could go in right click and say refine mask so we could do that anyway if you're drawing lots of little bits of refine sorry magic brush on a shot you can adjust the refine edge in between if you don't know what we're talking about we look at refine edge um in a second and i saw another question about ah no magic eraser that's a good thing to have actually jonathan and i don't see a reason why we couldn't look at something like that in the future but array a way to step backwards would be pretty cool as well uh let's see there was a question i missed but it went too quick maybe it'll come to me right so you can see that the magic brush is additive uh you can see that when we are using it we can adjust the tolerance which we're going to look at now and the refine edge we look at after that as well that was the question is it was does it work on skin so yes it does let's just remove that one let's turn my mask on and let's go for a relatively yeah low tolerance this is from another ambassador tina ryerson so i'm going to draw notice that was a bit quicker this is from a canon 5d so less megapixels than the iq150 and relatively speedy now it's missing bits so let's just do some adding in as we go if you want to add the neck and the chin like so it's missing a bit of the shoulder so let's add that and now if we look at this in grayscale you can see we've got a pretty nice mask of just the skin areas if we then wanted to use the skin tone tool and so on now this is just a way of creating a mask so if we did want to then you know edit any parts we could use our you know erase brush and then take bits out we could add you know more to it as well so it's just it's just like some really clever person has drawn the mask for you but you can edit it just like um anything else and refine it after the fact and so on looking at another one a pool shop and i see paul is online as well so hi paul if we let's just get rid of that layer for a second oh no problem that's probably one of paul's adjustment layers probably shouldn't take that off or no maybe it was me fiddling with a magic brush anyway let's grab the magic brush and let's make a really tiny tolerance like so and then we're going to go on the bit the fire falls here and then we're going to see calculating magic brush mask once again because we're up to 150 megapixels with a very low tolerance so you can just see it filled in this little tiny bit of the rock down there like so but still pretty complex mask now if we bump up the tolerance to something a bit more grandiose and let's just draw a little bit there like so now you see it's filled in you know a lot more so the tolerance really is how big of a net you want to cast when you're working with a magic brush last thing to look at is two final options let's get rid of this layer when i was playing earlier is first of all the refine edge and secondly is the sample the entire photo and this photo is really a great example of both of those things so let's first of all pull the tolerance and the refine edge down a bit and notice that this box is off currently sample entire photo so if we just doodle on the blue sky for a second you can probably guess what's going to happen or we could fill that bit in there it's going to fill in all the blue up until it hits an edge like so so if i fill in this little gap here and this little gap we could gradually fill in the bits but as you can imagine on a shot like this this would be um kind of laborious so what we can do is say ignore edges and sample the entire picture so now if we go here and sample this one now it's going to fill in all those areas of similar pixels so that can be a handy thing to have especially on this kind of system sorry this kind of image let's turn that off and let's uh get rid of this mask for a second let's do another quick brush doodle and let's move into the picture a little bit so you can see what's going on let's right click once more and really do a big let's do a small refine edge value so practically zero and fill in this bit and this bit now if we look at this grayscale it will be easier to visualize so you can see that this edge is pretty hard right very binary it's a hard stop as soon as we get up to that particular edge if i bump this up on the refine edge to something much larger let's just turn on the mask so i can see where i'm going and let's doodle around here somewhere like so turn our grayscale miles back on now you can see really the difference between a not refined edge and a heavily refined edge so it's bleeding out into the surrounding areas so of course you're going to need to balance that between having you know slightly ugly binary edge to something which is whoops i clicked let's undo to something which is a little bit more soft so we can probably find a compromise for this shot let's move it down a bit and find somewhere else to doodle let's go there and here and here oh that was i was over the edge there that's why there is a size control there we go and if we look at our grayscale mask again now you can see we've got a pretty nice edge there so again just another adjustment that you need to play around with okay um okay lebton i just saw your question if you want to export one pick just use the shortcut command d remember it will use the same settings as before so you don't have to enter that dialog if you don't want to if you're working through a shoot you're using the same process recipes and you're just knocking out your exports every now and then command d works exactly the same as before okay let's uh zoom out from this lovely shot here turn the mask off so i think you'll get how the magic brush works super simple very straightforward very powerful additive process as you remember don't forget to right click to play around with tolerance and refine edge and of course it's much easier to see what's happening if your mask is turned on and if you make a mess you can always right click and clear the masks and just you know keep going like so fill in this bit you know it's really nice and speedy and extremely useful right last couple of things what do i have to mention asset management who was the guy who was really excited about that that was andrew i saved your comment andrew just so i could put it up on screen again um let's go back to blake shots for a second because these are exactly the kind of situation which we might want to use this feature so if i say show in library we're gonna see the sum well we're going to see the sum of all blake's pitches like so 36 shots and then we've got all the oh sorry i've got some filters on where are my filters hang on let's turn that off good little thing if ever that happens and it says you know i had a filtered result but there's nothing going on in my filters tool and there's nothing on in the search bar there's probably a good chance you had some global filters turned on so that's your third place to look as well but as i said now for this feature you can see the contents of the subfolders in the parent folder so we've got 36 in total here which is showing me 21 here eight in here and seven in here like so now if you want the previous handling of capture one you can just right click and say hide images in subfolders and now you'll just see the contents of each of those folders but like a lot of us who've been really keen to have this feature it's just a simple on and off click like so so welcome andrew to the family if that helps to ease the transition over to capture one now there's an additional improvement to this which kind of ties into that which is synchronizing subfolders now previously capture one would only synchronize a known subfolder so if the subfolder already existed in the catalog and i said synchronize then capture one would happily synchronize any known subfolders but what will happen now you'll see an extra dialog here which will look for any new subfolders that you might have added import some new images you can show the imports if you wish and so on so that synchronization capability is far enhanced to what it was before so currently it was known subfolders only now with this up update it's any new subfolders that happens to be in that hierarchy as well okay a couple of other things and then i can let you go guys and girls go on your way which is exactly the right timing so fujifilm users who shoot captured shoot captured fujifilm owners who shoot tethered i should say hands up so for those of you there was a small annoyance that if you're in live view then to then take a picture you would have to cancel live view take a picture and then go back into live view so that restriction has now eased so you can leave live view running and keep capturing for those of you who shoot leica tethered as well for a couple of bodies and a couple of lenses you can find those on in the release notes you can now nudge the focus using a couple of keyboard shortcuts or or clicks on screen so two little improvements there we've got some new camera support for the fujifilm xt1 infrared nice obscure one the fujifilm xs10 can now shoot tethered and then a whole bunch of panasonic lumix g99 95 and 90 and a slew of lenses from fuji sony and sigma as well so a few nice additions there as well okay so that brings you pretty much up to date with the new features that were released today so just to remind you the magic brush the new exporter give that a try asset management that we looked at couple of minor tethering improvements and of course the usual aspects of camera and lens support added as well so lots of nice things which are available to all of you so if you've just joined or joined halfway through doesn't matter if you're a subscriber or a perpetual license you can just head over to capture one and download the update no charge no cost etc i saw some of you were struggling to download i think that's just the sheer quantity of people who are currently trying to download so just bear with us we're putting new rubber band in the server and you should be able to download pretty shortly i'm sure okay thanks for joining us today and taking part in just sharing the good news with us i hope that was useful for you and if you want to join us shortly or relatively shortly next thursday we have another webinar just a good old editing session looking at various different techniques and so on and you can find that on our learning hub learn.capture1.com or you can see the placeholder on youtube as well any issues don't forget to reach out to us on support as well support.captureone.com always people there willing and able to to help you as well if you're watching on youtube and you want to be notified in the future of when we're going live hit the subscribe button press the bell and then that way you'll get a notification half an hour before we go live and when we go live as
