[Music] four years ago canon released a revolutionary camera possibly the greatest dslr that will ever be made it is the canon 5d mark iv it quickly became the staple of portrait wedding photojournalists landscape photographers it was one camera that could do anything i bought this one from keh our sponsor looks brand new but it's actually used and they came with a full warranty and a guarantee in case anything possibly goes wrong with it anytime you want to buy something check keh first and see if they have a copy for sale because it saves you good money this is four years old there is a new version but newer isn't always better i'm going to be shooting with the new canon r5 it's their flagship camera and it's a mirrorless it went from the 30 megapixels you're used to with the mark iv to 45 megapixels it's got an evf which is always nice to have the body is stabilized which means all of your lenses are stabilized it has an actual truly silent shutter and you can get 20 frames per second in the electronic shutter mode my one of my favorite things is this this is the 70-200 look how small it is without the lens hood of course so i'm going to be bringing the holy trinity i have the 70 to 200 i have the 15 to 35 on the r5 right now um and i'll also be bringing the 24 to 70. oh yeah and i'm going to bring an adapter to see how it works when i use my old canon lenses on it too because you don't have to update all of your glass necessarily if you update i want to see what that transitions like are people going to be able to fluidly switch to the mirrorless canon system if they were shooting canon dslrs before we'll see [Music] i've got to rearrange my bag for this new setup [Music] [Music] i don't think we should do this [Music] drive to ender's island so we we're kind of itching to travel here but we can't so we're just exploring our own state of connecticut and we're going to a place called ender's island right now i think it was a convent i don't really know but there are a few little photogenic things there we'll get some sample pictures and get a feel for the difference between these two cameras and maybe we'll learn what exactly what ender's island is yeah so this comparison is a little bit different from our usual because we're not really talking about which camera is better it's more about figuring out what this upgrade would be like for a canon user is it worth it which features do you get what are the main differences yeah i'm thinking about the professionals is it going to be worth the extra money to upgrade the body and should you upgrade your lenses to or just adapt your old lenses [Music] [Music] okay so we've been shooting this video using alternate cameras and one thing that i'm noticing is that tony's struggling without a flip screen so that is a good convenience to have if you're going to be filming video i was able to shoot part of our video inside the car because i have this fully articulating screen and a wide angle lens also my camera stabilized so i can adapt any lens to this camera and it's automatically a stabilized lens did i mention that it shoots 8k the 5d mark iv does record 4k video but it does so with a 1.74 times crop which is why i have to use this 16 millimeter lens that still makes it only like a 27 millimeter and it means i can't get any wide angle shots unless i drop down to hd video i also can't do higher frame rates in 4k that r5 can do 120 frames per second in 4k which is perfect for slow motion but i just can't do that i also cannot use the viewfinder which means i have to always hold the camera out like that which often just makes the shots less steady i know the r5 overheats but it's a vastly superior video camera than this 5d mark iv if you're considering upgrading it is nothing but a wonderful upgrade let's talk about file sizes too this 5d mark iv file from this project was one minute but it's four gigabytes and that's in heavily cropped 4k 30. let's look at the r5s files this file is 4k at 60 frames per second twice the frame rate and it's only 1.86 gigabytes better quality smaller file sizes huge win for video workflow henders island has a chapel and it's a religious retreat but more importantly to us today it has these beautiful views and some pretty gardens when we reviewed the first eos camera in 2018 we found it to be too unreliable for professional use that is no longer the case after living with the r5 for the last month it's proven to be a bulletproof still shooter using the r5 for portraits is actually amazing because it automatically finds the eye in the scene it also constantly previews your depth of field so if you're shooting a group photo you'll know for sure whether everybody's face is in focus now if you're shooting with a 5d mark iv are you really struggling to get people's eyes in focus probably not you probably have that auto focus thing figured out but the r5 makes that faster it means that you get your shoot done quicker it means you can switch from this to this to from wide to tight and get the eye every time within a fraction of a second instead of constantly needing to take your time and move the focus point and focus and recompose so for portrait photographers it really does make the whole shoot go quicker serious portrait and wedding photographers are also going to love the 85 f12 rf lens i know canon has an 85 f12 dslr lens but it's really old and slow and not very sharp the 85 f12 for the r5 is amazing and is enough for me to want to upgrade to rf [Music] alone i thought it was going to be so much colder today i don't know why tried that for my mask maybe take the 5d mark iv i switched over to shooting with the 5d mark iv and it's actually a very similar shooting experience to the r5 of course some things are different like this little screen is an older version of the screen the 5d mark force top display looks like a 70s casio watch which you might think is pretty cool the r5 stop display is smaller but easier to read in any light the information shows changes based on your shooting mode and you don't have an evf which saves you battery but i miss it i like the evf the shutter feels a little bit different too it's a little bit more of a clunky feel but nothing really noticeable nothing that's going to pull you away from the shooting experience and nothing that's going to make the transition difficult so far oh i got sensor dust that's a really cool thing about the r5 they let the shutter go over the sensor so when you're changing your lenses you don't get a bunch of dust on there the shutter is a little bit delicate but i still appreciate that because what's worse than taking pictures and realizing you're going to have to clone out dust on every single picture it's the mistake i keep making in my life you're saying that because you usually shoot sony don't you yeah that's true i like to use nd filters to do a long exposure for things like a fountain to show motion in it and it's so hard on a dslr and so much easier on a mirrorless camera so as i put this on the camera the viewfinder now just goes completely black i literally can't see anything the r5's electronic viewfinder had no problem seeing through that nd filter because it can literally see in the dark here i brought it into our dark studio where i literally couldn't see stuff with my eyes and it lit it up bright as day and the low light autofocus is amazing when i looked through the 5d mark iv's viewfinder i couldn't see anything and the camera did nothing but hunt even with autofocus assistance whether you're using an nd filter or shooting in low light the hybrid stabilization of the r5 allows you to take really long handheld shots without a tripod i was able to get sharp shots handheld at 2 seconds and 24 millimeters that allowed me to produce drastically cleaner results than if i had had to follow the reciprocal rule it doesn't hurt that canon finally provided stabilization on a 24-70 f28 something they've never done before oh no technology has spoiled me i'm so used to mirrorless already that i over expose my shot uh-oh uh-oh bring the shame if you scrub your exposure on a dslr your only indicator is this little marker on a mirrorless camera you see the exposure change in real time you can even view a histogram in your viewfinder that's cool on a dslr pressing the depth of field preview button makes the viewfinder go dark on a mirrorless camera depth of field preview is totally seamless another thing going back from mirrorless to dslr is that the behavior changes when you're looking through the viewfinder and looking at the back screen so i was looking at the back screen to touch to focus i looked through the viewfinder to change focus and it becomes disorienting once you switch to mirrorless but of course it's fine if you're used to your dslr if the 5d mark iv isn't keeping you from getting the photos you want there's no reason to switch it's still a great camera does the r5 have advantages over it sure but we'll be there waiting for you when you're ready to switch and there's no reason to get a new camera unless you're old ones keeping you from things that you want to do i'm having this experience where i'm missing features of mirrorless especially the electronic viewfinder it's like you're chimping in real time i never had a problem with my dslr you certainly don't need those features but i'm realizing that i've acclimated to them more than i thought and i enjoy them more than i realize the r5 does feel like a more modern camera and the features are updated but the features on the mark iv are actually not lacking and it's more evident as i use it that you're not gonna have a hard time getting the job done with this camera it's a great camera it works really well it just doesn't have those nice to have features that make the workflow a little easier this is a situation where a tilt screen is nice because i want to get very low to get the reflection but i can't see it so i'm just going to guess and then no i i was wrong you could always lay on the ground i don't want to land a gun my shirt's nice [Music] let's talk about lens quality the most important lens is probably the 24-70 f28 zooming way in on these side-by-side shots the r5 is a little crisper whether it's from the improved lens quality or higher resolution sensor but it's not by much let's talk about image quality the r5 has 45 megapixels while the 5d mark iv has only 30. those 50 more megapixels really do show you a little more detail when shooting near the base iso 100 but it might not be as much as you'd expect if you're concerned about increasing storage requirements the r5 seems to store raw data more efficiently because those raw files are about the same size as the 5d mark 4s for detailed information about the r5 image quality including high iso and dynamic range side by side with the 5d mark iv and other cameras watch this video in short the canon r5 is better in every way there is one great equalizer that's price we bought our 5d mark iv from keh for 1880 but the r5 was thirty nine hundred dollars more than twice the price get a 5d mark iv and you'll have two thousand dollars to spend on lenses from keh but the r5 might get the shot when the 5d mark iv fails and that can be worth far more than two thousand dollars if you decide you do wanna go mirrorless what's it gonna take well you can use all your existing canon ef lenses as long as you add the canon rf2 ef adapter and we found the autofocus works better than the 5d mark iv you can also use the exact same batteries though the new canon batteries do work a little better with the rf you don't have to throw out your old ones your sd cards will still work but they've gotten rid of the cf cards now they use the new cf express type b cards so plan on spending at least a couple of hundred bucks to upgrade the memory cards of course all your flashes tripods all that are 100 compatible the nice thing is any gear you have left over you can sell at the keh and then they just send you a bunch of money and all that gear goes to a new home and you don't have to hassle with selling stuff on the internet so check out the link to keh here and use the coupon code tnc 20 to save yourself five percent now i said you could use all your old lenses but we have found that the new canon rf lenses outperform the canon ef lenses in every way so after you upgrade your body you can gradually upgrade your lenses to benefit from these new powerful super sharp rf lenses but you don't have to do it all on day one just send them to keh and upgrade when you're ready so should you upgrade from the 5d mark iv to the r5 if you want to yeah it's a great camera be sure to subscribe to see more reviews of the r5 and other cameras too and you can see our free tutorial about the r5 to get you up to speed quickly
