welcome to my video about our trip on the rocky Mountaineer we're from Los Angeles and we flew into Calgary on a Monday and then took a private shuttle to Banff where we stayed for two nights before our train ride the town of Banff lies within the Banff National Park a UNESCO world heritage site it was founded in 1885 when Railway workers discovered natural hot springs on the slopes of nearby sulfur Mountain the Canadian government established a reserve around the springs and promoted the area as a spawn Resort destination of our arrival we took a walk to both Falls and then had drinks and a quick dinner at the historic Fairmont Banff strings hotel we didn't stay there opting for a hotel in downtown Banff [Music] the next day we were up early with plants to visit Lake Louise in Moraine Lake two of the major sites in the Banff area the color of the Lakes change depending on the season and the angle of the Sun the turquoise Hue is caused by Rock flower which is fine sediment from the glaciers which reflect light the lake was named after Princess Louise the daughter of Queen Victoria who visited the area in 1882. the lake became a tourist attraction after the Canadian Pacific Railway built a hotel on its Shore in 1890. and then it was on to Moraine Lake which is surrounded by Majestic mountains waterfalls and rock piles making it one of the most scenic places in Canada [Music] thank you [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] the next morning we were picked up at our hotel and brought over to the train we boarded immediately and we were rolling in a very short time thank you [Music] thank you there are two types of train carriages Silver Leaf and gold leaf we chose gold leaf and the carriages were fantastic the Everett deck was for seating and the lower deck was for dining and outdoor observation or about gold leaf features later in this video there are two seatings for meals because the downstairs dining room accommodates half of the carriage passengers at a time we were in the second seating on our first day and there was a pastries and coffee service for a second seating passengers before breakfast [Music] the Publications were at our seats most helpful was mild post which had a lot of interesting information about our trip so what not [Music] here [Music] [Music] thank you I spent most of the morning before breakfast on the outdoor observation area [Music] here we are walking into the dining room for breakfast the attendants were very gracious and accommodating our requests to sit by ourselves so as not to disturb seat mates with our cameras [Music] thank you [Music] pancakes we Traverse the spiral tunnels not far from the Lake Louise area and the kicking horse River I don't have any video of the tunnels because well we were in the tunnels the tunnels allow terrains to Traverse the kicking Horse Pass and they were built in 1909 their best viewed at two points along the trans-canada highway I was at one of the viewpoints many years ago and if you're driving along the highway at stop at one of the viewing points is definitely well worth it especially if you're a train enthusiast how did the kicking horse River get its name well James Hector a member of an expedition was exploring the river and he was kicked by a pack horse and fell unconscious His companion thought he was dead however he later revived when he joined the Expedition he named the river and the nearby Mountain Pass after this incident [Music] historic Stoney Creek Bridge spans over Stoney Creek and Glacier National Park it was built in 1894 by the Canadian Pacific Railway to replace a wooden bridge that was too weak for new locomotives the bridge is made of wrought iron and has a trust Arch design that can support heavy loads it's one of the most impressive engineering Feats of the 19th century and the landmark of Canadian Railway history [Music] foreign [Music] this was one of the few times our train had to stop on a siding to allow a freight train to pass going in the opposite direction on our trip we only have to stop a few times we were lucky because Freight trades can be over a mile long and waiting on sightings can lead to Long delays [Music] everyone [Music] everything happens [Music] we need a olive oil [Music] foreign [Music] the last Spike Monument is a historical landmark that commemorates the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1885. it was the first transcontinental Railway in Canada connecting the Pacific province of British Columbia to central Canada the last Spike symbolizes the unity and achievement of Canada as a nation [Music] thank you [Music] foreign [Music] lake is known for its annual salmon run when thousands of sockeye salmon return to their spawning grounds in the Adams River Hotel was included in our trip cost the hotel was very nice and located close to downtown Kamloops room keys were handed out while we were on the train and our luggage was already in our room when we arrived [Music] on her second day we were on the train and ready to go by 7 30 a.m here's a look at her seats luxurious to say the least the seats recline but in a way that they don't approach on the seats behind you there's also a foot rest lumbar support and heating for cold weather trips USB charging points and electrical outlets are between the seats the trains don't have Wi-Fi but there was 5G service when the train was going by settlements and when it was traveling alongside the trans-canada highway is entering the inside lower level from the observation deck two restrooms were on the left and the glass door Beyond is to the dining room the spiral staircase to the upper deck could pose a challenge for some people but the carriage has that covered with a dedicated lift as demonstrated by this nice lady with a beautiful voice [Music] on her second day we were in the first seating for breakfast and lunch the main dishes are the same for both days although the appetizer for lunch was different after breakfast I was back out on the observation deck before our trip I had the impression that the run from Kamloops to Vancouver would be mostly semi-arid was I wrong the landscape changed rapidly from semi-aried to dense forest to the wide open Fraser Valley when we were nearing Vancouver Thompson is an important river in British Columbia it new main branches join the Kamloops and flown to the Fraser River [Music] thank you [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] two of Canada's most beautiful rivers merge have become one at the Confluence of the Thompson and Fraser Rivers the Thompson river is blue green while the Fraser River is Muddy and brown [Music] it comes with me during lunch I rushed out to the observation deck because we were going over one of the Cisco Bridges The Cisco Bridges span the Fraser River they're used by two rival Railway companies the Canadian Pacific Railway and the Canadian national highway to switch sides of the river as they follow different routes along its banks [Music] Hell's Canyon is a spectacular section of the Fraser River where it Narrows and flows through a deep gorge with towering rock walls the name house Canyon comes from the difficulty that salmon face when they tried to swim upstream to spawn house Canyon is also a historic site it was part of the route used by gold miners during the Fraser Canyon gold rush in the 1850s and 1860s [Music] foreign ER rally stretches from the Fraser Canyon to the Pacific Ocean it's known for its Rich agricultural land Scenic mountains and cultural heritage [Music] Fraser River and Valley are named after Simon Fraser an explorer who traveled more than 3000 Miles by canoeing foot along the rivers of western Canada he's regarded as a founding father of British Columbia for establishing trade and diplomatic relations with the indigenous peoples and Proclaim their land for the British crown thank you [Music] [Music] that way [Music] we arrived in Vancouver at about 7 30 pm [Music] it really was fantastic the rail cars scenery food and how smoothly everything was run was just outstanding we spent the night and the next morning in Vancouver before our flight home the Opus hotel is located in Vancouver's Yale town it's a really nice hotel close to many restaurants the Yale Town station is just across the street from the hotel and you could take a train to the airport and be there in 20 minutes [Music] along Falls Creek took an aqua bus to Granville Island and explored its Farmers Market [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] on our way back to our hotel we happened upon the engine 374 Pavilion this steam engine pulled the first transcontinental passenger train across Canada arriving in Vancouver on May 23 1887. a volunteer was happy to tell us about the engine and its history had a special meaning to us because on the rocky Mountaineer we had just traveled along part of the same route as engine 374 traveled over a hundred
