the day was coming to a close as he headed down the tracks he was looking for a specific Telegraph pole finally he saw it to the right of the tracks it had been a while since he had been there but he had no trouble spotting [Music] it on it were two familiar hobo signs the top indicated that there was fresh water and a safe campsite the one underneath it gave him the [Music] [Music] direction the sun had sit fast and it was nearly dark when he arrived the night promised to be chilly and so the first thing that he did was to start a warming fire for this he used a scrap of newspaper and his trench [Music] lighter it was getting low on fluid and he made a mental note to remedy that as soon as [Music] possible this particular jungle was only used by a few of the bows and the contents were kept in an old steamer [Music] trunk the first item he pulled out was the old railroad kerosene lantern he would definitely need this for light [Music] next he assembled the tripod and wash [Music] basin there was a couple lengths of rope and down in the bottom a heavy canvas [Music] tarp but first he needed to light the lantern he smelled it carefully it had kerosene in [Music] it down by the lantern there had been a wax wrapped pack package sure enough as he suspected it was a box of [Music] matches [Music] now he must set up the tent for the night the chill in the air hinted at a coming rain [Music] the tent Stakes were simply long Timber spikes the old claw hammer was kept in the trunk as well [Music] I [Music] his hands were getting quite cold so he went over to the fire to warm them [Music] up there was another canvas in the trunk in case more bows needed to spend the night he planned to use it on the ground to keep dry from The Damp [Music] soil [Music] [Music] [Music] what was left in the pack was his spare clothes which in the canvas bag would form his pillow he had walked a long way that day as there were no trains headed in his Direction ction and even though his stomach protested he was going to bed without supper because of the damp chill air he was going to Simply sleep in his [Music] [Music] clothes [Music] he awakened to a cold drizzling [Music] rain as he exited the tent he stretched as he was a bit stiff from the cold hard ground at least he had been warm with the wool blanket and the heavy wool Overcoat [Music] he had Arisen several times during the night and had managed to keep the fire [Music] blazing looking in the trunk he found in the daylight that there was another spare Canvas Bag left by another hobo a sailor no doubt from the MSS Falcon in the Great [Music] War [Music] keeping clean was an important part of a Hobo's habit riding the rails often in Coal cars are exposed to the smoke and Cinders of the belching steam engine a bow would often arrive at his destination covered with dirt and grime he could not expect to find gameful employment in a disheveled and dirty [Music] condition [Music] now it was time for a shave [Music] [Music] since most jungles had a razor frame like many others he only carried the razor blade safely wrapped in wax paper and tucked away in his change purse [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] for although he'd had no supper he had something special for breakfast after splitting a large pile of firewood a farmer's wife had blessed him with several fresh eggs but more importantly she had sent him on his way with a small bit of salt [Music] pork even though his blade was razor sharp he had difficulty slicing through the thick [Music] rind [Music] [Music] it would have tasted better in a pot of beans but he was famished and intended to just fry some up the eggs could also fry in the pork Grease [Music] [Music] as as a hobo he was used to hardship and deprivation however there was one morning necessity he would not [Music] forego [Music] he liked strong black coffee and even though his Supply was running thin he heaped the grounds into the pot he always made a little extra either for his own pleasure or for another bow who might wander into camp and appreciate a hot cup of Joe on a cold morning [Music] when the coffee had boiled sufficiently he poured a little cool water on top to settle the [Music] grounds [Music] well he was ready to eat but first he must return Thanks to the source of all good [Music] things [Music] it had stopped raining and today looked like a good [Music] day [Music] [Music] well the time had come to break camp and hit the road like all hobos of his ilk he left no garbage and did his best to clean up and leave things as he had found them or even better he never knew when another hobo down on his luck and needing a place to stay would come by and need these very [Music] things [Music] [Music] [Music] finally he put away the water bag which had been left up to drrive by the previous hobo as a canvas needed to be thoroughly dry before stowing it in the [Music] trunk it was an old trunk but a good [Music] [Music] one [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music]
