there are now more than 4,000 homes it resembles a new British town nestled near the foothills of the panoramic Sierra de espana it's easy to see why in 2008 Colin and Angela Brian Ches worth from Croydon sold their terraced house and bought a brand-new three-bedroom three-bathroom Villa for a hundred and eighty-nine thousand euros I came into a home from the young Sun terrace outside coming straight through into the lounge diner and our lovely corner sofa I chose this you did you did and the color yeah red consequent everything after this go I think of red in it down to the carpet turns and in the kitchen we had a choice of what units and workshops we wanted so this is what we chose okay so we come from the kitchen out into the bedroom upstairs rather uniquely with these villas you have to come out the property to go to external stairs up to our bedroom and through into our bitch'll just here right you've got the ensuite and then from our bedroom out and so big sun terrace again all the furniture from england chosen by angela I know how Street and all the other villas their first summer was everything they could have dreamt of sipping sangria and eating tapas on their son Terrace and Colin tried to make a go of his new business venture being a fitness instructor to the rest of the British residents on campus all but in the winter of 2009 there are Dilek lives on the vast campus old development changed forever it all started with Colin's daily workout in his gym come shed at the back of the garden on the morning of the really heavy rain I still got up to train and home started to move day by day the walls began to crack and fall away their swimming pool started to buckle and sink and the problem appeared to be spreading the paths outside their villa just fell away the area resembled a disaster zone Collin and Angela's dream life in the Spanish Sun was crumbling away before their eyes but this is not the first time they've been problems in camp assault in oh it's very clear the vast campus all development covers more than 6 square miles it's divided into four sectors a B C and D the homes John saw in 2008 were on the edge of sector D at the time group Amasa said the problems were mainly a result of works carried out by residents to Gardens and basements they said they've resolved some of the cases involved but now it's sectors B and C where the problem of extreme subsidence appears to be happening Colin and Angela's home is in Sector C which is one street back from the edge of a vast golf course while we were on campus all we counted 70 homes in this area with visible signs of cracking some are worse than others around them walls and roads have opened up to the elements grouper massa say they're aware of 15 homes with structural problems its November 2010 and John top is back in campus all he wants to see if there is any advice or help he can give to Colin and Angela who wants get ahead through that bracket is huge yeah you level and what happened was it sloped completely down so if a neighbor decide to hire a jackhammer and break this down because what happened was there was a collection of water underneath so it was in a vain attempt break it up and try and dry out a little bit that here was the same height as that well hello okay I mean it's bit overwhelming to be honest when you first see it because I can't imagine how we could even begin to put this right at the moment you can't get in and out of the property safely you can't even walk outside your back door it's clearly unacceptable I'm a young person if someone was in pain God knows how they do this I just don't know John wants to check whether in his professional opinion the house is safe to live in and that means a close inspection of the Foundation's found down here is the original foundation system I can t see the tops of the foundation poles you should never be able to see those once they're installed and once the building is constructed you should never see the head of a pile again but I can hear and that could be a problem since it suggests the ground beneath the house may have sunk all around people's dream villas are cracking and crumbling and for Angela and Collin their horrific situation has the potential to get a whole lot worse if their villa goes down the same route as their neighbors the quirky external staircase on another property is separating from the upstairs bedroom if that happens to their house they'll need a ladder just to go to bed it appears here that the the buildings or their building is probably okay but everything around it seems have dropped away massively I mean by we're talking feet unbelievably Angela and Colin's neighbors seem to be even more badly affected but I think I've seen the standing building that has gone so far out of square yep yeah it won't go much further than that before it collapses footings do genuinely want to stand up but once you've got legs like this yeah then it is well on its way to collapse they are very very lucky to be alive very very lucky indeed two streets back from Colin and Angela and the property which cost retired Roger Wilkins one hundred thousand euros appears to be moving I've owned this property for approximately five years basically I bought heaters there and an investment from my son week last Sunday I bought some friends Arthur who was staying with us for the night when we walked in we were greeted with this devastation this water heater was actually part of the wall unit and has now crashed down straight through a brand-new microwave and another wall appears to have moved this spirit level is only 60 centimetres but in 60 centimetres the wall is out 10 millimetres in other words the wall is now leaning like that and the problems are not just on the inside when I bought these property five years ago this road was absolutely dead flat unfortunately now when you look from end to end there are lots of lip ripples all the way along but it's especially dropped now in front of our property and by at least two foot and as we can see down here I have put a bit least three ton of gravel here over the past 12 18 months and this ground is just keeps dropping down and down and down it is just a neverending story Roger had wanted to spend quality time here with his granddaughter but now he's too scared to let her into the house in the meantime Colin and Angela are wondering whether the problems with their house will get any worse John has the answer at the moment I'm satisfied that it's it's safe and I'm satisfied that nothing's gonna happen suddenly doesn't mean that something won't happen I mean there's been a little bit of movement whether the building is gonna stand up that's one thing whether it's suitable for inhabitation is another all of the external works all of these walls the patios all the pathways the stairs the external walls the roads they're gone you know you've gotten over here it got to be swept away and started again and of course that's an essential part of our infrastructure it's all want to go having a safe house but if you can't get your house because I'll and around it is so dangerous I don't know how you will go on living in conditions like this frankly I mean you have to do something about this because you just can't use it at night some parts of the campus old development are affected by a different set of problems paulbyrne is 65 years old and has lived on campus old for 11 years it is now about quarter past 6:00 in the evening the Reno lighten out of daylight comes back in the morning it was all right 11 years ago but gradually as lights go out they don't they're not replaced and now the roads are in complete darkness at night everyone's passing the blame for who should do the work in 11 years you thought you would improve but it's got worse I say a lot of people are moving away a lot people are leaving but for Colin and Angela moving away is not an option in its current condition it would be impossible to sell their property it's worth a fraction the original asking price group a masa said Colin and Angela have not contacted them over the problems with their home group amasses central office also say it's not aware of Rogers complaint and says he along with most other residents has a ten year guarantee which covers any structural problems with the house every time it rains we worry because we don't know what will happen next it's our home if we walk away where do we walk to everything that we own is here we couldn't just walk away
