[Music] hi sewing friends welcome to my sewing room my name is beth and today we're going to be making a simple quilt block a rustic quilt i'm calling it a cabin quilt these are the four blocks i'm starting with i'm going to show you how to make the block i'm using flannel and a little bit of some woven plaids i'm sneaking those in there because i didn't have quite enough flannel but i think it's going to work out just fine let's get started the first thing i did before making my blocks is i went through my stash and i found some fabrics that i liked and i cut two and a half inch strips then to start the block i need four two and a half inch squares two light and two dark and i made a four patch using those and all of my blocks have two of that yellowish cream and two greens so that is a constant in my quilt that will be the constant then i need two strips that are two and a half by four and a half for either side of my four patch and in this block i'll be using i think all of the strips match so those two reds are the same then i need two more strips and i kind of cut them as i went along because i wasn't sure um yeah what choices i would make with my fabrics so this is two and a half by eight and a half i need two of these for either side of my block so far and i thought this was really fun fabric i only have a little bit of it so i was happy that i had enough to add these eight and a half inch strips onto my block and after i get those on i will choose another fabric in my two and a half inch strip stack of strips there and again i'll cut two and a half by eight and a half and these all match these strips so two and two two and two so you don't have to have these two sides match it's scrappier if you don't i like to use what i have in fact not all of my blocks did match i used some different fabrics and some of the blocks that i made next up i'll need a two and a half by twelve and a half inch strip on either side and this red sort of plaid looking fabric is fun i straightened the edges and i did need to use my cutting mat for that 12 and a half inch measurement this will be a really pretty block i'll add those to either side and then we'll have one more step now it's time to add my strips around i need four two and a half by twelve and a half inch strips and again i use two two different fabrics but they match two and two two reds on either side and two of that dark green greenish black on either side and i will attach the two reds on opposite sides and then i'll need to add squares to that dark greenish black strip and what i did is i had two gold and two green and i put them on opposite ends because i want my um finished quilt to alternate well you'll see in just a minute but we're going to add a green on one side and a gold on the other and we will attach it to each side and then that gold needs to be on the opposite corner diagonal from each other so that when i put my blocks together it will kind of make a four patch uh dark and light with my big blocks here so i'll pin the seams i'll add the strips and our block will be done [Music] uh [Music] i'm gonna be putting some more blocks together using that four patch in the center all the four patches will be very very similar and then the strips outside will just be the reds and the greens these flannels are a little bit tricky to work with flannel is a little bit stretchy and it sometimes it's hard to get things squared up but it's uh such a soft kind of a quilt this is a country quilt for sure i'm going to keep sewing my blocks together and get going on this quilt [Music] hmm [Music] so [Music] so as i finish this next block i want to show you how the outside squares kind of come together and make their own four patch in the corners of these big blocks so i'm going to keep sewing it's always nice to sew with friends i thank you for joining me today and i will see you next time [Music] you
