Buying a Milking Goat: Everything you need to Know

[Music] alright guys I'm here with Beth Miller as berrywood Jericho and she's actually one of the first people that I bought my goats from and so I wanted to show today what you should look for in a milking goat so we're gonna start with our favorite ones obviously the Nigerian Dwarf that's our favorite yep and so you're gonna bring him in and then we're gonna hook at him he comes she knows the routine okay so this is Evie she's this is her fourth threatening okay she's a little bit older but not a lot older she's I think five years old um she actually is an example of one that has really good blood lines okay but isn't really showing what I would just love to see so if you look at her shoulders and of course she's not shaved and this is when you go to buy a goat you're usually gonna see this the hairy yeah and you can't see anything okay but her shoulders are all tight you can really see this defined line here and you can get your fingers right between her shoulder blades which is not it is not good you wanna you want to tear you want the sharper all-round case you don't have a nice long body which is good and she's fairly level on her top line and her romps not too steep and her udder is pretty nice to work with okay so it has a nice soft touch picture and you can see her skin is really loose oh really literally grab that is that like is that genetic dairy yeah oh that is with a thing for dare ya got me if she's gonna have a nice soft utter and that's really easy to melt cow interesting it's something too tight oh okay cool I never knew that I noticed it but I never knew that was the reason this was only a love an hour fill for her she doesn't have a full utter usually once you we're not going to write something more now so like shuttered up yeah they're completely full whenever you see those goats that are like they show like the pictures on their sights or something so what have they done to them how long have they let them fill up it totally depends on where they are on your lap tation and the goat so some of them are only 8 hours if there are first if they're early in their lap so they kind of do whatever it takes to get it as we know them have been 24 hours okay since even last month right it just depends on how long it's he got ahead so interesting yeah so she has a really nice soft better I can massage it here and the skin is just easy and to mope her out you can kind of see her teat yeah so she's a pretty good example this had called them the medial support ligaments okay so you can see how it's pretty defined on her okay not exaggerated but it's got a good definition that shows it is going to support a good utter okay her attachments are fairly low down here and that's good too if they're way up high then she ends up the saggy utter when she's over really so okay the way of the utter we'll just pull down and there's not as much to support it right um it'd be nice to see hers a little bit rounder through this what it is yeah [Music] [Music] so this is your little chart this is my little chart I love it up every day you don't have to be a meticulous yeah but I just like to know and we measure intensive a pound so she's right at point nine tonight so you're measuring the weight you're not measuring the amount or that yeah yeah and that's usually how if you were ever going to milk test that's what they usually do that is a much more accurate than volume if you pour in a porch are you might write whole cup of foam yeah totally I don't use daily oh she's giving about it for today but really it may be three cut [Music] find it a pound or so smoking yeah so she's a tiny bit less but that's okay they're all a little bit low right now all right so here's Katara you can see she does have a really nice soft sharp shoulders oh yes she does really nice long body she's a little more level than Evie is she seems to carry herself better okay her bone structure is more smooth yeah shoulders don't check out yeah I know hips start sticking out she's just smoother and if you look at her utter she also has an incredibly soft butter on her pieces she had that skin thing yeah she's got pretty good skin too what would you call that like they call it dairy skin Oh with dairy didn't okay looking at your dairy skin that means so you can rub along the ribs and it's not there the skin just pulls right up okay so let's take a look at her utter utter so yeah she's going to be like me but funny about it so she's um not going to stand right if you can get her done here okay okay so her side attachments are a lot higher up and her utter rear attachment is deeper in so she doesn't have this nice of it see how her utter just kind of hangs it yeah it's kind of this like Edie's was more and that's because Edie's attachments were a little bit further down okay be had better attachment so in the long run even though her structure is a little bit better than a V she's gonna probably not carry that utter as well when she's like eight or nine years old Oh has a bigger heavier utter yeah gonna snag more it's gonna be part of her enough to hold up she has that nice medial suspension ligament thing going and she has a good size T to me great I'm always like look at that first but then I never really have thought about other attachment matter itself yeah it's just gonna keep getting lower if she ages ah yeah a little bucket even though she most I want more milk [Music] [Music] alright so she's like one 1/4 of us know oh that's so cute I love that one but she's so pretty okay so Lera is pretty much what you're looking for from you for us okay as far as the body structure everything nice tight shoulders who's blended really level she's a little bit of a smaller go so Shay not gonna have quite as much of an utter and her utter though has really good attachments and it's small and round and really soft on her body so over the long run this is going to be oh yeah this is a nice letter and totally different than the other is really even it has the nice actually looked like set a little further back yeah set a little further back and a little bit closer on the sides and it's really nice and tight and round it doesn't have a nice lump oh she does have smaller like it's long oh well so which freshening is a perspective questioning okay so even though her sheets are small it's easy to grab ahold of yeah for utter because her utters those go nice and soft [Music] all right let's see what she produced right around the pound also yeah just a little over oh no bad is wiris sister okay she's a lot she's a lot taller a lot bigger goats yeah all around a bigger goat but still really nicely put together so but look at that awesome utter oh my gosh torsional though she's a bigger though chica shovel around or other right yeah those teeth though great teens yeah wow yeah so are you like the personality at first though really now that she has such a nice utter it's not easy to move it I kind of like you know yeah I think you're all right now yeah so when you have it when you have a go like this adds a really good utter you probably list the babies for a little bit more since you know that they're yeah yeah um my Jones that cover on their milk stars and have done really well especially on the more upper end of that's what I would like to jump milk soon haha how better others but are better confirmation like this and yeah babies will be a little bit more yeah but it's worth it you know the nice thing about flying a Dairy Goat somebody she's done he's doing more testing and keep careful records there you know what's with sass when those babies you have a pretty good idea especially if you can lift up and see what they're what not only puts their mom's produce but also what their Browns are and great-grandmother's produce right and you're going to have a good idea of what you're going to get out of that baby and sometimes looking at babies it spends its toll you watch out BBC over fights and she's grown up I mean baby pictures you can stretch them out mate yeah you are you trying to keep a picture and they're all hunched up and standing in the corner and they just won't cooperate yeah but if you know what they're coming from then you know that maybe we should turn out my skinny days cool so or if you know that that may need to choose from a line of kind of funny-looking goat don't pretty low and that's probably what you're gonna get what's your opinion on the registered versus non registered well I'm a pretty strong component for registering goats for that very reason they have a record of what you're getting again know what you're getting into but it's not going to be surprised ok hello if you get an unregistered throat so who knows what to know about right your caddy might not even be purebred not that's a bad thing if you just want to know but if you're serious about wanting to know yeah from a Nigerian you're much better off getting a registered goat that has a long history of of milk testing okay one thing a lot of good owners want to do especially me when I first started was to get a goat that was already in milk you know like I wanted to go that was ready to go because I was ready to got some so awesome but doesn't work biggest problem is right they will you'll get the goat that's the one people don't want yeah you like they're kind of getting rid of there they're like reducing their herd they're like look I have this goat in milk and you can great but then you're like it's probably the one that they hate the most yeah I mean it's one thing if you've got 20 goats in milk like me I really don't want to be milking 15 those this summer okay so I'm going to have so you may yeah so that's like the reason I guess not important but I'm not going to let my very best oh so no yeah or no you're gonna but you would sell a baby from that goes so it's going to be better for me to get if I want to best lines the best milk then get a baby so yeah its problem is that people don't think about it when you take the dough this end mo that's two or three or four years old away from her heard didn't usually see a drastic drop in milk production yeah toll doesn't know you she doesn't know your farms right other animals she doesn't have her friends anymore it's getting really stress her out right not gonna I thought totally happened to us one exception I guess is you could you could get it goat that was like a yearling that was rent because sometimes what go owner to bezel raised all these babies out and sometimes that'll be part of the I guess strategy of selling them you know I have the Bucks a dream they say okay like it's bread yeah so fine if you can find a goat that's bread that will told you your ideal situation if you want milk after okay got hard to find yeah yeah unless somebody's really like cutting back and saying I have too many goats and it's hard to find a good quality oh yeah yeah that's it that's a great way to go about it since you can have a VG Tom yeah and she'll be comfortable IKEA and I think the only last thing that I can think of is that I've had people say oh you know I went got this go and it was wild and I'm like mom please don't ever get a go is a mild now you have to chase it and how hard you know because especially if you're a first-time milk or a first-time goat owner that's so discouraging yeah I'm urging enough is frustrating enough friend to learn how to milk a goat to have one that you have to completely train him is so hard alright she's all done [Music] so she has the infamous nubian teeth Helga not auntie comes I think it comes actually from her buckle on you put you think she seemed very cold she's a first dressing her so ok first freshener utter um so yeah she's got pretty good attachments here she doesn't have we did talk about the front attached to me okay she some of the other ones have a pretty deep pocket so they attached further back then you would like to see him so then when the utter fills up this just kind of balloons out and leave a big pocket there okay so she doesn't but I don't know if that's just because she has a small mutters yeah and she's just first you have to hit refresh so we'll know more next year [Music] oh my gosh I'm gonna die yeah they are sad I didn't realize they were that little lightning this is my hand like look look they're they're as big as my hand oh my gosh colorful ones are boys and one of the black hundreds a boy the other two are girls look at that look that this is nuts then
