whether you're upgrading your current lawn mower or zero turn mower or looking to buy your very first mower i'm going to give you 10 important tips to help you pick the absolute best lawnmower or zero turn mower for your needs so that you don't end up spending too much money or worse buying a mower that doesn't live up to your expectations tip number one is pretty straightforward but a lot of people make this mistake which is don't buy from a box store buy from a dealer dealerships oftentimes have mowers that are the same price as what you'll find at a box store actually they have a lot of the same mowers that you'll find at box stores the big box stores don't offer service or repair or really supply parts in fact when you have a problem with your zero turn mower or lawn mower and you bought it from a box store and you take it back all they're going to end up doing is sending your lawn mower out to a dealership like tractor bob's tractor bobs will take a look at it and then ship it right back to them it's better to buy from a dealer one because it's not going to take as long for you to get your repair work or your warranty work done and two because dealerships oftentimes have sales that you won't find at your bigger box stores for instance at tractor bob's we often have discounts for veterans and first responders also some brands of mowers allow the dealers to discount their mowers other brands of mowers don't tip number two if you're upgrading your mower make sure you know what model it is and what specs it has having the information before you start shopping will ensure that you get a mower that is either as good or better than your current lawn mower so make sure you know what your current mower model is and try to find out what engine you have what transmission you have how wide your deck is how fast it goes once you have that information it gives you a great reference to start comparing other mowers to your current lawn mower tip number three know your specific needs now this might sound pretty simple but most people don't take into consideration some very key factors like how smooth is your land do you need something that has suspension because if it's pretty rough land and you have a lot of it and you're going to be going at high speeds to mow like you need a professional or commercial-grade mower then going you know 7-8 miles an hour even 10 miles an hour and mowing can be very bumpy depending on what kind of land you have also if you have really steep hills that can be a huge problem as well a lot of people end up string trimming their hills because their mower can't handle it whereas they could have bought a mower that could have otherwise handled those hills drastically decreasing the amount of time it takes them to get their lawn mowed also make sure you know your budget going in because you probably won't be able to find the mower that does it all for the cost that you want most residential zero turn mowers start at around three thousand dollars and go all the way up to five thousand dollars honestly don't expect to find something substantial for less than three thousand dollars now if you mow around three acres i strongly consider looking at high-end residential or entry-level commercial mowers if you mow more than five acres weekly look at commercial mowers commercial mowers run much faster hold much more gas and are built to handle that type of workload and just know if you have a residential mower and plan on mowing five acres it'll take you so much longer than a commercial mower okay tip number four know what accessories you need maybe you need a bagger maybe you need mulching blades headlights we needed a rack either way knowing what accessories you need ahead of time means that you can work all of those accessories into your budget i've put a link in the description below to the bad boy mowers accessories video that i did most of which are accessories you can get on all mowers tip number five is a really big one and that is used mowers versus new mowers buying a used mower can be a great way to get commercial quality for a residential mower price also it might free up your budget to get some of those accessories that you need but consider yourself warned because too often people will buy a used mower and end up putting so much money into fixing it up that they could have just bought a new mower in the first place so if you buy used try to buy from a dealer at tractorbobs we take trade-ins and we do full checks on all the equipment we take in on trade so that puts more money in your pocket to spend on that new mower we will even service equipment before we sell it if it's used and and if it's new we always go through and check the fluids and everything now if you buy from a dealer that does the same it not only gives you better peace of mind but it also gives you a business that you can fall back on if you aren't satisfied with your purchase if you buy from an individual you could be left high and dry you might even be able to finance a used mower at a dealership tip number six will hopefully save you a lot of time which is call the dealership before you go in calling before you go in will ensure that you don't waste your time shopping for mowers can be like shopping for a car if you don't know what you want before you get there you can easily spend four hours at the dealership if you know what you need call the dealership to make sure that they have the product you are looking for in stock calling before gives you a chance to ask any of those deal breaker questions that you might have now if you even don't really know what you want still calling and talking to somebody on the phone can save you a lot of time okay tip number seven this is more of a technical one stay away from stamped decks at all cost buy fabricated stamp decks are made from a single sheet of metal and are stamped into their shape this means that some of the parts of the deck are much weaker than others particularly where it bends they don't last as long and are just a way for the manufacturer to cut costs fabricated decks are much stronger and last much longer to find out if the mower has a stamp deck or not you can ask the salesperson or go to the manufacturer's website pull up the spec sheet and you'll find information about the mowing deck there the nice thing about the tractor bob's youtube channel which i invite you to subscribe is that we lay out all of the specifications of the mowers that we sell here at tractor bobs plus other mowers that we don't even sell so you can also go to our channel use that as a resource tip number eight ask about the warranty this is straightforward but let's say you are looking for a mower for right around three thousand dollars well knowing that the husqvarna z200 series mowers have a fabricated deck that also comes with a limited lifetime warranty will give you the peace of mind you need to know that you're getting a zero turn mower that has a great mowing deck typically on mowers there will be a manufacturer warranty an engine warranty and a transmission warranty as well in fact i recommend the z200 series husqvarna mowers for anyone looking for a zero turn mower around three thousand dollars i'll have a link to the video of the top three mowers for three thousand dollars as well as the top five mowers for under five thousand dollars in the description below that's another video that you can check out and you can see some of the best mowers in those two price ranges tip nine engine transmission build quality when you're shopping for mowers one way you can tell which mower is the best deal is by comparing major components see which mower has the best build quality the biggest engine and the largest transaxles for the cost knowing this will help you make the right decision transmissions that are in the 2000 series are considered residential ones that are in the 3000 series are considered commercial and above now if you're going with kawasaki engines which are one of the more popular engine types they're categorized by letters in fact all other mower engines are as well but for the kawasaki you have fr fs ft and fx fr is the residential and fx is the professional and then every step in between you're just kind of jumping up in capabilities tip number 10 take a test drive no not every dealership offers test drives but if the dealership that you purchase through does then make sure and try to test drive that mower make sure it goes as fast as you need it to go and rides as smooth as you need it to go that will really help you pull the trigger on that new purchase of a zero turn mower or other type of lawn mower make sure to check out our in-depth mower
