[Music] [Music] [Music] well that's not working that's not working at all and you know what we got to find a solution to this because I'm not pooping in the woods anymore hi guys we're here today at the small cabin in the woods I'm Kevin you may have seen me on a youtube channel called the wooded beardsman that's my brother anyways we built this cabin about two years ago we overlooked a small detail we needed a washroom we didn't build one at the time we figured you know go on the woods no problem so today I'm going to show you how to build an outhouse from scratch using materials that we have leftover from the build a lot of construction comes down to the few basics measuring and fitting stuff into place now you may think I never want to build an outhouse you could use a lot of these skills shown in this video to build let's say a dog house or a playhouse or even your very own house probably don't have all the material to finish this build but I do have a good start now the problem is to in this area here or into the my it says my right to start the outhouse build do you ever wonder what kind of tools it takes to do a project like this let's go over what I've brought out today to start the build now gun nails level tool pouch hand tools speed square that's one of the important guys drill manual hammer and many tape measures because I seem to lose those a lot or a work surface table you got me tractor we're gonna dig a hole we have up on the hill the generator so that's what I'm gonna start now [Music] I don't know if we were to go four feet long so I have a three feet wide on the inside [Music] [Applause] okay now we got the rough size mapped out where we're gonna do is notch it out that's gonna be a lap joint so a little bit stronger at the base so what I got to do is take a little bit of meat out of this area here to fit on this guy here so I'm gonna mark all those cut cut and then we put it together and that gives us basically the footprint where we're gonna make the hole [Music] now we do is we complete the notch on the other side so it lays flat I wonder how deep a hole for I know how it should be I guess you know what the size of this thing you could almost you know if your hole filled up you could probably fill it in and pick it up and move the outhouse you know as much fun that would be I'm gonna I got to dig a hole I don't know I could see let's see I don't I'm not a very good backhoe operator so this will be fun to watch I'm sure okay so this is the this is the footprint as you can see it's very solid one little thing this little tree was right in the way of the dig so what I've done is I've taken the time to relocate them I like to save as many trees as I can this little spruce tree was in the way so what I've done is I've actually relocated them to a safe spot see this little guy it's a pretty little tree [Laughter] the whole is fair sighs it's for four and a half feet deep how does my whole look and I'll show people my whole very often it's just probably my first hole probably look how big my hole is these this is with a problem you know what digging in like in the playground when you were a kid and like there was no rocks that's a neat looking rock potato look at that looks like a big tooth anything this is uh this is neat stuff so what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna actually take the base of the of the outhouse and set it on the hole and actually level it up a bit so we don't have a crooked a crooked poop house you doing to want to root tickling your bottom okay so now that we got the base set higher gets more material from the pile okay well I got some more old two-by-fours that I had saved from a cabin built originally since there is no official plan on it there's no real determining height all my studs are different lengths so I can pretty much determine what size I want regular door weighs about 80 inches so I probably start there there's gonna be a peaked roof on it mirroring the cabin measuring all our studs 79 inches now we get to do the fun part and frame it all up look at that it's pretty darn pretty darn level for being a toilet house in the bush let's check this side that side there well the only reason I checked it was because these two studs here I didn't really have a reference point to nail them in so what I'm gonna do is level them and mark them and then nail them in doesn't look like a telephone booth is there even telephone booths anymore that that could be a telephone booth oh I like it it's very square thinking of how to do the corner posts I think I think I'm gonna I'm gonna hollow out a cedar tree I haven't quite decided yet lean in towards it it's gotta build the roof next I love building roofs so some people were talking about material acquisition and how do you get your stuff and well the trick is to never throw anything out like a lot of people when they do a project like you know I think build a [ __ ] or they build a house or whatever the heck they do they tend to throw whatever's left out or they return to the store or whatever so I have a tendency to save stuff so when we built this cabin two years ago now we had we had milled two by sixes one on the mill and then we basically piled everything right here so this is a generator this is the generator how it solar panels so here we have the two by six so you can see you can see it's sitting here it's fine I was looking for more material for to do the roof and then I was like whoa well maybe use as opposed to you know cutting it down another tree or cutting even like yeah like it's already it's already cut up doesn't it look like a roof he's got a some assembly required you ever tried to film and carry wood at the same time haven't let's let's give this the world so yeah there's two two by six ten feet long no this is gonna work YouTube's easy right yeah YouTube just just don't just film everything you're doing that's no problem just just film it easy nothing into the middle of it nope that was just that easy so now you can talk while you walk it's like a V log with a log so I'm walking through the forest with my ten foot long two by sixes and a four pound camera about four feet away from me I just thought I'd attempt that cuz I just had lunch so I'm a little stronger so now I'm gonna be now there's a mosquito biting me let's get this show on the road so I'm ready to reg to measure the bridge so what I do is come up to the top here when we measure basically the sensor so that's our center point that's where the stud is gonna go this both sides let's see how tall we are actually not a bad view from up here Murr who's ever been a two story outhouse I wouldn't want to be on the bottom floor you can see we're probably down there's probably about 14 feet fourteen feet to the bottom of the hole I caught a ridge beam and I've marked on it six inches so that's gonna protrude out the side six inches I just got to put it on [Music] [Applause] what I do doesn't necessarily mean what you should do this is more of a this is what I'm doing not a how-to anyway I cut something that's about the right size and that I'd I'd make sure that is plum a beam and I set it up there and I draw a line and I see if it fits so I draw a line on it and then I cut it to that angle and then I see if it fits I gotta do the same for the birds mouth birds mouth is what sits on the outside wall so all right where'd you go like this and hold this up like that that's kind of where I want it now if I hold that like that you can kind of see all the framers in the world are laughing at me right now so that's basically a level line that goes down figured out the angle and the burden off so what you do is make sure before you cut a bunch of them so that fits right there and then you take this template and we duplicate quite a few times and you know what's fan you know what I found interesting is that it's the same pitch as the cabin you know I'm not a framer so anyways same pitches the cabin that's lucky right so let's cut some rafters you have a double time that bad boy she's starting to look like a shelter there's a shelter Shh terr it looks it looks pretty good I'm mildly impressed anyways we got a the these things here that we have to do the the extensions cable ends who knows all these terms I'm a drywaller so we're gonna do the the gable ends we gotta extend it out cuz the ridge beam goes out further than that we want to look pretty so we're gonna have to extend those out all the way along that's six inches so little six inch blocks we're gonna nail them all up easy peasy that gives us something to nail a fascia board onto okay so the plan now is to cut off the rafter tails so they're nice and square we left them long on the cabin I like that style on this one I think we're gonna close up the ends all the way along that allow us to get the fascia board on properly now that we've cut the rafter tails off we can actually put the front fascia board on no gives us a nice square whenever you can you can use the old piece of wood that you just used to line [Applause] the cabin build I had a lot of flack from this saw people gave me a lot of flack it's an Akita cordless saw battery-operated 18 volt things great and the reason why I like it because it's light you got the old like the monster saw there's a generator going I could run corded saw but it's so much easier to when you're cutting little stuff to use the little saw it's like the right tool for the job it's not very heavy and it's light did I mention its light that's what I like about it what do you think what do you think of the house they're like regulations laughs you look like a wishing well yeah we Inc he taught okay I think we're got the majority of the framing done as you can see so I got the cedar post let you see the tree we saved when we are yes it was dead fall it's dead standing so this is going to be the corner of the front of the things so I've got to cut a triangle out the front using a chainsaw so bad [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] hi we're at day 2 the turd Shack today we're gonna do the roof please some of the siding I feel I should talk about the roof a little bit so this this is all sheet steel it was acquired from castoffs from a different roof project so the panels are three feet long doesn't quite meet the ridge but that's okay cuz the original cover it reason why I use steel is because of the Bush shingles tend to rot moss grows on them but if you got sheet steel it basically set the roof of this you know pretty much a roof for life so yeah you basically line them up you got the strapping on screw it down and you're all set [Applause] [Music] normally people that do this sort of thing for a living will have a metal break the metal break is a tool that is used to put sheet metal in and basically allows you to bend steel perfectly it's got very tight edges and you put the metal in and then it's got a little clamp and you clamp it in to give fold it very easily now I don't have one of those so what I got to do is just brute force it I can use a big log on the straightedge big heavy thing and just bang it until it kind of makes it its profile its right angle so now we just go to install that perfect Bend it looks pretty doesn't it wow that's cold that's like it's gotta be like 10 degrees cooler down here this is getting the idea we should build a root cellar anyways so the major the structure majority the structure is done we're gonna put some siding on it we have some siding left over from when we did the cabin build let's go up and have a look see what we got in stock if this is the first time you guys have ever seen me on YouTube this will be interesting so this is a log this is a cedar log bark fell off its an old cedar log it was collected from a tree job it brought it was brought here by an arborist and now I'm gonna mill it so I've got it loaded up on my my norwood sawmill here there we go alright i'm going to show you how to mill some siding if you want it you know rank that the cost of it would have in gasoline that it would have cost to drive to the store that's probably what it cost or less to actually mill the boards up this is a fancy tool this is a Dewalt brad nailer it it's battery-powered you might have seen me put up the ash shake on the cabin build with this guy it's a great little tool it's great for trimming you don't have the hose you don't have the noise of the compressor you don't have the noise of the generator running you look at that siding isn't it beautiful stuff beautiful siding we got the cedar on all three sides now we're just gonna deal with the front it gonna put the door and that's the most important part right all right the privacy there's still some caps that need to be on here but that's that's a day it's another cedar tree the smell smell this is probably the best it's ever gonna smell so anyways this is now what we have to do now is the the door frame for the the door I'm going to put I'm gonna put extensions on here jamb extensions so we can actually put the siding and then butt up against the jamb extension the jamb extension basically provides a space for the hinge but then it also gives you like a where to finish it with trim so what we're gonna do is build that look who came to visit maybe where's being hey beamed where's beam beam what do you think what do you think means like I'm camera shy I don't I don't I don't want I don't want it I don't want to cuddle you beam hey oh it's the Thunder there's thunder the beam doesn't like the Thunder maybe anybody what I'm gonna assemble is the jam it's always easier to do this on a flat surface when you're dealing with the door jam because you can actually take the top portion of the jam and you can nail it in it sits on top so what you want to do is you want to nail it in from the top well good morning guys started day three today is interior finishing day it's exciting I've got some special ash ash tree be nice wide one so we're gonna fit that today and hopefully make this fully functional because once you use the toilet it ceases to be a construction project and it starts to you know be something else so yeah it's been a long it's been a long haul logistically speaking toilets are gross right so you kind of have to lie on the inside of it so I was thinking to myself what am I gonna do like wood is just porous it'll just kind of collect everything you kind of want something plastic and I was thinking to myself hey a good idea so my buddy brought me this plywood he's like you want this plywood it's got plastic on one side and I went the heck am I ever gonna use that for now that's gonna prevent buildup of all sorts of stuff primarily urine and poo you probably get Turtle Wax it so it all just slides down again this is like these are details that most people don't think about and I think you have to think about it when you're before because you don't want to think about it after [Applause] that that generators been invaluable especially when you need a need a little bit extra alright so now we're gonna frame the ledge at which the okay I'm gonna cut the plastic coated plywood to cover the inside of this box now alright that completes the business end of the house I'm gonna run some caulking down the edges of the inside so it bottles it down into the hole I've just tested the fit it's actually quite relaxing first time I've sat down in three days so I got a Bezier mark under the toilet seat for the hole yeah and I'm gonna cut it out somehow it's actually pretty comfy it's actually almost story height there was a floor like I said it would be it would be perfect it's nice and spacious alright [Music] okay guys it's time to build a door I've saved a piece of wood right to the siding specifically to make the door I was just going to clean up the edges a little bit and then I'll give us the both sides to the right in the left side there's gonna be a Dutch door so that means the door splits it too so you could actually sit there you could have the top half open and still have privacy with the bottom so that's that's not gonna build now [Laughter] but there let us see out so when we build this door what I want to do is actually keep it off the floor a little bit not crazy amount but a little bit off the floor a little bit off the top and then what I want to do is I'm going to actually put a Ledge so you can half the door open half the door closed you can see that I'm going to put a two extra a little across members here to hold it [Applause] so we're looking at the back side of the door if is the inside so okay let's see the reveal on the inside [Applause] I was having a hard time finding some wood around here that was 11 inches wide but I ended up finding some in the pile it was some old butternut that actually fell down in a windstorm and I milled it up many years ago and it was in the pile and I haven't thought of anything to do with it and know some woodworkers are probably gonna be very angry at me for doing it but I think so I didn't show it because it would took a lot of effort I took some butternut and I squared it up and I made the the top the top of the door as you can see I just got to put some hinges on it now hopefully it'll open up all right so finishing touches are underway we're gonna sand the surfaces you touch we're gonna pour the colloid polyurethane on it'll help it weather the storm sort of say yeah we're gonna we're gonna have polyurethane and sand it polyurethane and probably take off some of the rough edges the last thing you want in here is rough edges when you're trying to take a dump so we're gonna polish it up we're gonna polish the outhouse up sander out and she should be good to go final stretches you can see in my lights fading on the end of day three tomorrow tomorrow is gonna be a good morning probably test this bad boy out [Applause] well that pretty much wraps it up for today I am going to work on a special delivery for tomorrow morning I'm having burritos I'm gonna have some pizza I think I've been heat some miss tacos I'm gonna have a hamburger cheeseburger yeah chicken nuggets maybe I don't know I'm gonna work on a package for tomorrow I think yeah and an open the window ke you know put the window yeah yeah okay okay close the door and you're gonna open the window push push hmm hello valina yeah it is you wanna come out it's fun to come out of your leg dude it's okay so how are you doing I'm doing good buddy
