yeah g'day YouTube land I'm Mike and welcome to my channel garage it yourself now before you'll do a runner because you've seen that this is a VW Beetle don't worry this isn't just going to be a standard restoration my channel is going to be about tips and tricks for anyone out there wanting to do resto mod on their vehicle of choice but doing it on a fairly limited budget and when I say limited budget I myself have a couple of hundred bucks a fortnight to play with after having to pay for everything else in the world so yes hopefully if you decide to like watch my channel you'll actually be able to pick up on some of the techniques that I use to end up with a good quality outcome that for not an awful lot of money the other thing which is going to be more relevant for Australians but depending on where you live in the world and the modification regulations that you have in your area that I want this vehicle to be 100% road-legal so that requires a lot of the modifications to get certified by an engineer and then once that's like all been certified it means that the car insurance that I end up getting will actually be valid so that's one of the the big things that I'm wanting to do is just cover myself and be safe in the knowledge that if something bad does happen at least my shop insurance will pay out yeah so as you can see and if you carry on watching the videos I haven't recorded this in sequence it's just because I was having trouble finding a microphone that would actually work because whole thing of doing this on a budget I'm recording this on my smartphone so it took a bit of finding to get a reasonably priced microphone to go with the the smartphone so you can see some of its already been been painted and you'll see videos in the future as I figure out how to use the software to do video editing because I've never done this before but when I figure out how to use the software somewhere up over there I'll in live photos and that will show as I talk what I've done so so far in this vehicle the entire floor pan / a sea has been sandblasted back to a bare steel and then was coated with a chassis paint a couple of coats of that all of the suspension all of the brakes all new like bushings polyurethane ones used where necessary especially on the I had this converted to independent rear suspension on the rear to get rid of the swing axle all of the brakes they're all standards but all new wheel cylinders new masters and new shocks like assets like everything is like new on it so I suppose the next thing would be just to go for a quick squeeze around the car just so I can tell you what I've done and what I haven't done [Music] [Applause] so the firewall has also been painted in the chassis paint sand blasted taken back to bare metal the frame head is looking a bit sorry for itself just because of all the bodywork Schmid's that's gotten on it so that we'll just have to get the cutting compound out just to take the top layer of Schmid's off make that look a bit more presentable again be as you can see like the luggage area painted ready to go do you know fortunately get some runs on the arches there's a technique for getting rid of those which is fairly quick and simple so we get to that in a later video maybe front suspension at present is an illegal 2 inch narrowed beam it's illegal in Australia because it uses swear ways and from an engineering standpoint there are no name anyone doing this in Australia you can use puma or a this adjusters those can be engineered persuade aways cannot so in the future I'm gonna look at how I can fit wider tires under the standard arches with a disc brake conversion and then hopefully that's all gonna fit with a standards with beam that has been lowered and that hopefully all pass engineering - is also been done and so glad to be over the painting of those two areas because they were a nightmare but they were all done like this the floor pan it's all been painted tank back to bare metal and then painted with chassis paint a couple of coats of that and then sound deadener it was a product I found called vomit I had pretty good reviews does the same as Dynamat but for a lot less money I do have a little welding repair to finish over there it's also ahead in inertial 3-point seatbelts fitted so that required having to get plates welded in behind on the bottom of the b-pillar and then I've got two options of either at the top or in the middle in the middle might look a bit weird but it does actually fall within the regulations and then yep we all of the inside that all got sandblasted back to bare steel and then again chassis paint was used on that unfortunately a chassis paint that can no longer get in Australia which is a bit annoying because it's really good stuff what other things is there to do on this I have the fun of like trying to align the deck lid because the the curvature of the deck lid doesn't match the body so that probably means I'm going to have to unpick the spot welds on the inner support structure and try and flatten it out to get it to to match so yeah that would be fun they'd rather dusty Moda because much alike I tried doing the sandblasting you know dust does get everywhere but that's been fully rebuilt new bearings new rings the barrels and pistons were found to be well within spec so I just cleaned them up gave them a quick home and put it all back together cylinder heads got reconditioned by a cylinder head reconditioning company before I sent them over there I also did a bit of a home porting job on just cleaning up the the casting flesh within the ports and just doing a bit of a port job to get a bit more flow on the short turn next to the exhausts and inlet valves on the cylinder head company just as part of the course when they do theirs because they use a sturdy valve cutting machine so I've got three angle valve seats in there which is quite nice that all helps with guess why so that's good suppose the big thing of the the restomod the 1,200 that's not staying in there instead under the clutter is we Subaru ej 22 so a 2.2 liter Subaru engine so that's going in there instead with its matching 5-speed gearbox it's also meant that the fuel tank has had to be modified for a return line but I am thinking of doing a new tank on that and going a different route with how I've already done the inlet and return as the outlet and retail so I'll probably get into that like down the way what else there's some more bodywork things to do like says the the deck lid needs sorting out the bonnet because this vehicle was involved in an accident sometime in the 60s or 70s so it doesn't have the original bonnet for it which is a bit of a shame but I'm basically being naughty and modifying a later on it to look the same as the early bonnet that's just having to get rid of the raised hump where the VW emblem sits on it and just cut in a couple of slots for around the VW crest edge we pick up me microphone cable because I don't want to go ass over tit yeah so there we go like says bit of an intro there's also a couple of like garrage related things as I come across them that I'll do if you're wondering why my compressor seems to have a Vesper exhaust on it is because it does have a Vesper exhaust on it and it's a hell of a lot quieter because of that but I do a video as well just explaining how and why I did that mmm what else I think that's pretty much it as an introduction so put the camera back on the stand yeah so hopefully what I've said will make you want to check out the my later videos as I go through doing the paintwork and the modifications and yeah like share subscribe all the good stuff and see you later
