Please note that this website is currently a work in progress! Lots of interesting data and statistics to come.
The drives mentioned are even on sale: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HHAJRU0/
Picked up couple.
I HIGHLY recommend freenas if you have any *nix knowledge.
This guide was a decent overview but there are some very IMPORTANT things he failed to mentioned.
There are very specific RAM recommendations for FreeNAS.
It's highly recommended that you use ECC memory (error correcting). This requires ECC memory, which is more expensive, an ECC compatible motherboard, and a ECC compatible chipset.
In terms of how much memory you need, the general rule is 8GB for the OS PLUS 1GB of RAM for every 1TB of RAW storage on the system(not usable). You may need more if you plan to run lots of Jails and Virtual Machines. So a anything over 8TB of storage you really should go with 32GB of ECC RAM to be safe, but that can be expensive.
His explanation of how RAID ZFS works in FreeNAS was poor as well.
I need to mention this because FreeNAS will install on a toaster if you allow it but it won't protect your data unless you have the right hardware and you configure it properly and won't know something is wrong until it's too late because you didn't have the hardware to prevent and/or detect the problem.
