[Music] hey guys dr. Dex here today we are all about finishing up our framing and our surface blocking if you like what you see please click that subscribe button and if you want to be notified when we're putting out new content click that Bell icon as well as soon as we get all this surface blocking done we're gonna put some waterproof membrane tape on it called G tape and then we'll be ready to start laying down some deck boards so hopefully today we'll start seeing some color all right so we have this grid of lumber installed and the reason we did it that way is because when we created our curve we had to bring the boards out this way to help mimic a 13 foot radius and then what we did after we put all these in was we came back and we blocked out as if it was a joist so every 14 or 15 inches we have a secondary block going through which is actually going to be our nailer for our decking so that's what this is all about and that's why it has kind of this funky look to it but we've done it this way I've done it with solid blocks solid blocks takes a little bit longer and just a little more challenging you gotta use a lot of wide lumber and cut it into curves so this one works pretty well where we're able to create our curve and then block in between it and then we G taped it for protection so looks really good anytime we have a double we're gonna put tape over that as well to keep it from rotting in the future we're gonna add another choice to this one because if you just saw what Annie did um everything's moving a little too much so if we add a secondary joist to this one it'll solidify everything and keep this from wanting to dip or raise or what anything like that so why is sandy cutting these the blocks ring the wafer must be enough put a double joy a double joist in so we're gonna take the blocks out recut the blocks and then put them back in after we get the double in I'm just gonna take an inch and a half off of these I'm adding some surface blocking so that when our curved surface border comes in like so it has a place to rest until we get to a straight board it should be somewhere probably here a couple blocks here to capture the rest of this curved surface border this is a solid block for a surface border and I have to notch around the gutter there's a product called Q Tech extreme that we use for all of our in grains it's a really high-quality sealer that penetrates really into the wood fibers so it works really good as an end grain solution or a sealant we're adding a secondary joist to this one right here because with all the extra lumber that we added it's got a lot of extra weight for this one joist to hold up and when we lay our joists out we grade all the lumber so that we have like the tallest to the shortest and it's a really good thing to do but the part that can suck about that is when you get to the end if you have to add anything most of the time you're left with only the thickest joist and in this case this is well you know this is like our second thinnest joist or the thinnest choice we have so I'm knocking this board that's thicker than this one around the beam so that it can sit flush with this one and then we're going to screw them together and it'll add some rigidity to this whole thing not bad why are you cutting that so I'm cutting this away so that I can flash behind it because where this faucet is there's always gonna be water dripping and trying to get back behind the house even though we're gonna flash this with metal I'm gonna try to waterproof this corner really well so that there's no issues in the feature of this water getting back behind here so this is in my way I didn't realize it the other day but now I do so I'm cutting it out I'm putting in a little bit of G tape to protect where the water morsing may get back here is we're gonna put metal flashing in here but I'm also adding this as another layer of protection it just takes a few minutes and kind of guarantees you know water is gonna get into this point right here which is where catastrophic failure happens on a lot of decks the guy's gonna start bringing the decking back and we're gonna start laying down some deck boards [Music] okay so right now what I'm doing is I'm prepping flashing this is a z-metal so it's an inch and a half C metal so it goes up two inches this way hmmph this way and then it curls about 3/8 of an inch over the edge of the joist so it goes up behind this siding and then over the joist or the room joist ledger board and then over this edge so it keeps all the water from penetrating behind here and then what we're doing after that is we're putting a piece of G tape on top of the metal to keep it from any punches from the screws that we put in for our fasteners well self seal before they go in through the flashing and into the ledger alright guys thanks for watching I really appreciate it if you like what you saw please click that subscribe button today we're going to be finishing up by laying down some decking and that's what we'll be doing tomorrow as well and then we'll start cutting in the deck boards and putting in our surface borders after that if you liked what you saw and you want to be notified of future content please click the bell icon as well thank you very much and have a great day [Music]
