Build a Deck

this is a video on building a deck using treated southern yellow pine for the framing and cedar as the deck boards I'm using my skills during a grapple for the demolition that's making pretty quick work of this old deck the deck was about 20 years old the surface was in pretty rough shape the actual frame below was in decent shape looks like some poor opossum is losing his home [Music] that DVC pipe you see is just a conduit for the internet connection there's no water in there [Music] along with this gets dear a dump trailers are pretty handy thing to have [Music] now engines will lay out work finding the corners of the deck I'm using the house foundation as a reference point to take all the measurements here I'm marina string it's parallel to the house foundation and now I'm using the six eight ten measurement a method to make sure that the lines are square some marker paint to show where the deck footings need to be dug a posthole digger on a skid steer sure makes things easier than digging by hand as postal digger my dad converted from a PTO driven attractor postal digger into hydraulic turbine one about 20 years ago now it's time to get off the machine and do some real work [Music] the holes are about 12 inch diameter and 36 inches deep and the poster of 4x6 create mine [Music] my daughter Wanda makes me spending money and it's great having her around some company and it's great teaching her some skills here she's using the rotary hammer in a socket wrench the house foundation here in this corner had some concrete that need to be removed some daughters using the rotary hammer with a chipping blade to get rid of the extra concrete now I'm using a rotary level to mark 10 posts level with the ledger board here I'm notching the post to accept the double beam made out of two by ten that'll be installed later and never right hand corner you'll see a link to a video where I describe this process at more depth here's the first of the two by ten by twenty main beams the board has a bow in it so I'm using a clamp to hold it down while I kneel at the right spot and put it on double two by tens and I'm starting to join so that the joints don't line up on the two boards [Music] here's the rotary laser again element on another section of the deck in the video see me just putting these tighten concrete anchors on the ends of the boards but I will go back and put the appropriate amount with correct spacing per coat now I'm drilling the holes for the half-inch carriage bolts that will fill through the beams in the post as DeWalt writing the drills a piece of a drill in the upper right hand corner you see where I did a review video I'm marking out the joist spacing on 60 minutes enters I used hangers for all the joist wedges doesn't show up in the video [Music] I'm going to picture friend the decking on the end so I have to install extra framing for the boards [Music] and the video see footings and metal brackets these are for a Peugeot that I'm also instant installing with the deck now I'm installing blocking between the Joyce's the spacing is a little bit off in the middle there because there's a gutter spout that's going to go through the deck [Music] there was another contractor on site replacing the roof while I was working this decks there's a lot going on with this website [Music] Herriman stole another piece of the picture frame decking I'm notching around the decking that will go around the privilege [Music] I have installed hidden deck screws in the past but I really prefer face for screwing the decking I've never had the hidden fasteners perform anywhere close to with the manufacturer claims they will and to me there's beauty and the symmetry of fit of face frame screws I really like the Simpson quick drive and I have a review of the tool there you can see the customers out checking on my work this outside piece has mitered corners on both ends and finishes off the picture frame hook [Music] and here's more notching around the pergola posts when I install the deck board I just screw them down into a couple places but now I'm gonna go ahead and screw them down to every joist here's where the quick drive and X extension really shines makes it really quick working you see that one gap in the decking yeah it's because I need a table saw to rip about a quarter of an inch off that deck board I don't haven't have a table saw with me at this time now it's another day and I've got the table saw with me I really like this portable DeWolf table saw [Music] using a small router to round over the corners of the deck board edges grip so--that's edges similar to the other deck boards here's the final shot of what the deck looks like with the pergola on top I think it turned out pretty nice and the customers happy as well thanks for watching please comment rate and hits that the hit that subscribe button have a great day thank you [Music]
