but as it turned out they were really quite close personal friends at the end and Peter just called him and said would you come and drive with me and obviously alen was you know he was proud to jump on board with him and I was standing at the top of the hill at mcphilamy Park in 1986 with my dad when he actually made a little mistake off it at the top of the hill put the right hand rear wheel in the grass and Fir into the fence on the left hand side of M Park actually quite a big shot so it actually had to be heavily restored as well and it was turned into a VL Commodore Neil Crompton himself had a chance to drive that car a year later in 1987 at Sandown as well as orang Park I believe and very cool to see it looking resplendent in the bath of sun today and if remember so vividly those laps that Brock did when it was wet and drying up in the year of that Livery and the way that the car moved around Brock famously put those intermediate tires on that he was famous for putting a tire on in those days that no one else was going to put on but he put those tires on he threw the car around he drove it so well it was unbelievable to see him and he's very very best and I remember that image of him sliding the car out of the back of the cutting up and under the tree and across through re park it was just amazing car control and then fat aring it as well with an elbow out the window just Cruis down straight doesn't get much cooler than that success for this car 2011 and 2012 hard to believe it's been that long since Jamie winup has got to the top step here he's had so many close calls at Mount pan he comes in as the raining sand down chant but that is a very special car one that he actually owns yeah look it's fantastic for Jamie to commission the car and have it here it's normally on display at tum Bend as you said before and for Jamie that had that car up here and the memories I mean remember we were lucky enough Craig LS and I with Jamie on board in 2010 and then again in 2011 the cars were so competitive so it was just before that car that I was involved with Triple Eight and Rand Dane and driving with with Craig LS and we enjoyed a fantastic one two in 2010 and all of the team I've got so much memorability and so many great memories of that sort of Livery being one of the most dominant parts of the tripa history and ditto the car behind it well yeah how was that looks old old how far of the cars come Chad because when you look inside that car I drove one of those HR 31s at Philip Island also and we've just heard Steven talking about it too there's nothing inside them honestly the the Creature Comforts and all the stuff we speak about now as Dick Johnson was talking about before with Jess there's so much of the old stuff that you just forget how primitive the inside of the cars were and if you had a big shun I mean honestly you don't even think about it now but it's bad Perkins and his son jack putting this car back together once again absolutely beautiful race car and he had an amazing streak of success here with Hansford and Engle throughout the 90s and that was the first of it in 1993 we had a great battle it was one of the great races I remember forever Jim Richards in the Windfield Commodore versus uh Larry and Greg and at the end of the race it started to rain and we B all day it started to rain and Jim ended up having to go up the Escape Road right there because of a lap car and that basically put us back but it was a momentous occasion because that car was the last genuine Holden engine in that because we all had Chev engines from that time on so when we turned into the 1993 Commodore Falcon regulations there were two engine options for Commodore in those first years and the Holden engine that Larry ran was a genuine Holden engine to win the race that was a huge source of Pride for a lot of Holden fans throughout the '90s and all Aussie combo getting the job done this is also the quickest pray lap I've ever seen as well I suppose when you throw race car drivers an open bath of circuit and a race car as well you're going to have a little bit of a square out there you certainly are and this one as Craig was talking about with just the amount of emotion I remember it forever it was a incredible we leading into the 2006 version of this race Bernay and Young Jack and Jack's wrapped obviously with the restoration of that car but leading in after the passing of the late great pet Brock nine time winner here the emotion from all of the crowd especially Holden fans was just unbelievable and we'd come through the whole week we were the shortest PR favorites starting on pole had the clutch drama out of the race basically within a very short period of time actually Jack Perkins and I out of the race at that time but the win for Craig and Jamie on that day and the emotion that was shown by Craig L was just extraordinary and that was a win for the ages it's almost hard to believe but if what happened to you on the start line didn't happen that day in then up Mountain straight we never would have had that it maybe not have had that incredible story yeah exactly I mean things happen for a reason Peter Brock used to say that and at the end of the day the expectation around us delivering a result for hold on that day everybody he was into there's ly can't help himself has to pass has to pass LP on the stra now let's just hope that lousy treats us a little better than the last time we thr him a legendary was that he almost crashed oh my God he doesn't know when to quit does he he's got to actually be a bit more steady here Chad cuz he'll fire himself off the road the way he was going he almost crashed so it was a beautiful HK manaro that was a tribute car that he almost chucked it in the fence at the Dipper he is he going to break oh I hope Jes has seen him he has thank you for that he does realize this isn't actually a race this weekend I'm not sure there's a there's a thing about his wiring whenever he gets in a car he Rings their neck one speed and one speed only pretty special moment for Jack Perkins to be able to see something that he's put a lot of blood and sweat and tears into getting back out on track and to see Larry giving it some some beans up Mountain straight pulling up alongside jet Johnson that's actually Dick's grandson driving the green stough Mustang cool story there in itself I bet Jet's going oh my God these blacks were Heroes yeah he was probably expect everyone to go out there and cruise around in second gear as well exactly here we go and the interesting part about that car is that they were running together Perkins and Johnson drove that car together up here so that was one of the only times that we ever saw in a for been an out of Body Experience watching a car that he used to drive climb Mountain straight when he's behind the VP Commodore this is is this L having a bit of a SL slide this is the slide so this is down at the left hander watch this he's a lunatic absolute lunatic so he's gassed it up it pops out sideways have a look at the wheel spin he's gathered it up no drama like he he does it so easily he's just so naturally gifted but he just honestly he does know only one speed Chad and that's going at it across the top of the mountain as well and Center irony there before he drove that card of Victory he was in a parade he was exactly right now that car's a really famous car because against all the the gdr noise that car actually won the 1990 championship for for Jimmy Richards so he dominated the series against Ford sieras how cool is that and Kate out there with jimy winup getting a a few more laps in a car that he drove to so many race wins and right here as well in 2012 sharing with Paul Dell still stands as his last victory here at the great race and he would so dearly love to get back to the top well that was great what a chance to celebrate the tremendous history of this mountain a really special opportunity to see some of the great cars that have raced here at Mount Panorama and to have so many Bloodlines here have the Johnson family on standby to have Larry Perkins back behind the wheel of that car Jamie winup Craig LS and James Brock Peter Brock's son he was the master of the mountain a nine-time champion here but as we celebrate 60 years of the Great race it's time to wind the clock back and revisit some of the star's most favorite moments including six time bath Champion Mark SCA well 1997 was an interesting one because I was drafted into HRT to partner Peter Brock for his first retirement couldn't have gone better the leadup we won um po position with the fastest lap ever it's not quite as good a lap as I did earlier when I did a 99 but uh not far away and it was one of those weekends where it just looked so so well organized and it was all great we were leading the race had a great battle with louns and Lou and Murphy were in the other car louns tried to go around the outside of a guy at Reed Park and fight in the fence going off the line and wow so B I was just leading by myself no drama at all had about a 40c lead I reckon and the engine stopped and that was the end of it over and out that car is slowing boy I know how they feel well it's all turning to disaster of a holding racing team you can hear something broke so 1998 L and I joined up in VT Comal and we were the first ones to break the 2minute 10 barrier so that was a massive thing in the day in terms of pace leading the race reasonably easily L had a couple of punctures through the course of his stints and then I ended up with a puncture in the chase in the breaking area and went all the way through the runoff almost into the fence and that was basically the end of our day uh One That Got Away I mean l and I we thought on that day that uh we probably could have driven around with a bit of brck action with our arm on the window but wasn't to be 2001 uh we were really competitive all season in terms of the championship and the way that we went to BS was in pretty much sort of dominant HRT form the car was just fantastic did not have a glitch Tony did a really good job stayed out of trouble all day and the pace at the end was good enough to win so 2001 was a was a a welcome return from some pretty bad luck in the previous couple of couple of events well rich and I if you remember the controversy of the 1992 finish and what Jim said to the crowd on the podium which is obviously at the day quite a famous remark I can't believe the reception I'll keep racing but I tell you what this is going to remain with me for a long time you're a pack of unfortunately for rich and I that year in 2002 10 years on he was able to call the crowd a pack of wonderful people what do you want to call them now a pack of nice Souls of Lov Lov people 92 was was horrific in terms of the way the crowd reaction unfolded and and for Rich especially because one of his best mates passed away that day so Denny Holm uh had a massive heart attack on Conrad straight he was the 1967 World Champion fellow kiwi and for Rich that was obviously quite an emotional thing we sort of knew from 1991 when we had won not being in a for or hold the 92 reaction was probably going to be pretty volatile but we didn't expect it to be that that bad we basically led the race all day and and I think Jim expected the crowd just to give us some qos give us a tick for doing a good job on a very very dangerous probably the wildest day I've ever driven at baist my very good friend Neil Crompton and colleague uh gave them the bird which didn't help I packed my two top gun jacket with beer cans cuz I was going to throw off your back and rich said no no no no don't no no no no scy don't do that don't do that it'll all be fine I'll look after him and uh then he called The Crowd a pack of and beer cans come from everywhere so 10 years on to win the championship and to win baist on the same day with one of my best mates was uh was just a miracle and one all old cherish forever that was a was a great race it's actually the most special parts of this week being here at Mount p
