[Music] [Music] she is a global icon with over 100 million album sales worldwide sellout tours numerous awards and accolades she is the princess of pop is very cool who wouldn't like to be a princess seen as the last top teen star of the 20th century she managed to stay on top of the game for over a decade the eternal all-american girl she was one of the top breakout stars in the 90s her rise to stardom was of epic proportions so far knock on wood they've been really cool yeah the audience response has been really good so with the mega hit albums hit me baby one more time and oops I did it again she established herself as pop royalty she's sassy she's sexy there's still that southern charm that's there and it's hard not to like her for years she fed the scandal hungry media and her very loyal fans watched as the princess of pop went into meltdown [Music] but despite all of her struggles and very public pitfalls she fought her way back into superstardom [Music] music always be my heart my soul because that's that's me that's what I've always done since I was a little girl [Music] she is Britney Jean Spears [Music] the smiley Mouseketeer has grown into a global icon loved and idolized all over the planet Brittany has spent her entire life underneath the spotlight in December 2013 the Princess of Pop started a two-year residency at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas Brittany piece of me marks a new chapter in the career of Britney Spears following the steps of other established stars like Celine Dion and Rod Stewart Britney is set to flame her career into new heights this was a great deal for Britney a lot of artists are having tremendous success having residency's in Las Vegas so she has a two-year contract it's worth millions of dollars and she can sit here and do her own show with her greatest hits tons of costume changes choreography dancers and it reminds people of the Britney we all fell in love with despite her last album being the lowest charting album of her entire career it doesn't seem to be slowing her down Britney's life has been splashed on front covers since 1999 when she broke out into stardom with her single hit me baby one more time you know what I love about Britney she's the girl next door she's sweet she's sassy she's sexy there's still that southern charm that's there and it's hard not to like her even when she's been through all of her trials you still come out the end of the day going I like her music she's fun the pop music's awesome she can dance what's not to like in those days Britney portrayed a more innocent image coming from the Disney Factory she was marketed as the all-american girl sweet innocent but at the same time sexy Britney exploited this image to the full born December 2nd 1981 in McComb Mississippi Britney G and Spears is the second child of Lynne Irene and James Parnell Spears Britney's entire childhood was kind of dominated by a very small town mentality where everybody knew everybody else nobody had an awful lot of money and it was kind of a very disenfranchised way to grow up she certainly wasn't part of mainstream American culture and probably some people would say white trash but that was a very unkind way of saying that she was lower middle class from a working-class family and from a very very small town Britney had a kind of storybook upbringing it was as far away as you can possibly get from from Hollywood and showbiz glamour she certainly wasn't born into showbiz royalty she had an everyday upbringing that's what made Britney so relatable to every young girl out there she'd have you know a parent in the business she didn't have doors open for her by family connections she worked hard she got there she came from with the greatest respect Nowheresville USA into Main Street USA and she did it with her talent and drive with siblings Brian James and jamie-lynn Brittany was raised in Kentwood Louisiana talent and star quality were evident in the young Brittany and at the age of three she was invited to perform as a solo artist in the annual recital at her local dance school she started very young taking dance classes even at age three she already had a solo in the recital I mean she was a star right off the bat and started taking dance classes taking singing lessons always wanting to perform and she started auditioning at a very early age Britney Spears is like the girl who grew up in the beauty pageants and was wearing the full makeup and the big hair by the age of four Britney's mom is a very driven a stage mom who was taking Brittany around to auditions basically from the age of five or six her performance showed the spears family that their little girl had a great gift a gift they would literally give everything to support the next few years saw Brittany improve her abilities and when she was 10 years old she entered the TV show Star Search after being snubbed by the Mickey Mouse Club casting director Matt Casella [Music] Kentwood Louisiana here is 10 year old Britney Spears [Applause] the poise the talent the confidence she had it all there this is one of those clips that we've all seen several times or one of those before they were famous shows but when you watch it she already had the complete package in Star Search she showed not only her vocal talents but also her skill is an entertainer [Music] people [Music] interesting thing is this gave her a greater exposure to other opportunities that are out there she did an off-broadway show called ruthless she was the understudy and went on quite a bit she also did a lot of commercials the rejection from their Mickey Mouse Club first time around must have been crippling the traumas that you suffer in childhood stay with you throughout your life and so when she went back to audition for a second time the fear of being rejected again everything she'd worked towards all those dance lessons all those singing lessons it was all coming down to this and it was a landmark moment in her life she was accepted second time and she was put on the path to stardom and in December of 1992 Britney was finally cast in the Mickey Mouse Club sharing the stage with child stars Ryan Gosling Christina Aguilera and Justin Timberlake the Mickey Mouse color was so much fun it really was I mean there was like 20 kids on the show we we didn't add MGM studios and it was just like it was so cool during the show Britney created bonds with her fellow Musketeers that would last for a lifetime Britney and Justin Justin Timberlake her first very famous love of her life met actually in the Mickey Mouse Club they were both child performers and Justin has a mom very similar to Britney's mom Lynn very kind of a pushy stage driven mom who Justin is absolutely very close with they both came from small southern towns and they had a lot in common in their background and there's skill set and their in their personality and they were very good friends right from the beginning you know Britney and Justin often talked about how they grew up together it really did they shared a common background and they shared a common spotlight and what that what that's like that unique feeling of being a child star they both understood each other very well right from the beginning um actually it was JC and Justin from the Mickey Mouse Club we were on The Mickey Mouse Club together however the show would eventually be canceled and all the Mouseketeers went their separate ways Britney returned with her mother Lynn to Kentwood where she enrolled at Park Lane Academy see Disney is a fame factory they take these kids they polish them up they make them fully realize showbiz performers it's like the ultimate Academy for entertainment she went through that it gave her all the tools so she could do the job when she hit the big time despite returning to a normal life Britney had her goals set and school life was not her priority the Spears went all out to push Britney's career forward in 1997 Lou Pearlman was negotiating with the Spears Britney's inclusion in the girl BAM innocence it's it's kind of interesting to think what would have happened because we don't really talk about innocence that much they were kind of like a one-hit wonder they were around but remember at the time groups were really big it was the the time when Backstreet Boys and NSYNC were coming around so it was really big to have a group of like young guys or young girls unconvinced with Lou's arguments Lin turned to a family friend and entertainment lawyer Larry Rudolph for guidance after hearing Britney's vocals Rudolph decided he wanted to pitch her to record labels her manager Larry Rudolph said no no don't take this deal I want to shop you around as a solo artist so he found this unused Toni Braxton single that was just laying around and had her shopping around in the middle of the year and I decided I wanted to sing again and it was really weird that my entertainment lawyer from New York he called me up and he was like come to New York so I had to fight in New York by myself for the day which is a big deal when you're you know like 15 it's I flew to New York and um saying for several different record labels and it was just really really nerve-wracking because it was like all these people just staring they're looking at you saying I wonder what she can do you know and then after that day was over with it was like taking this and I flew out that you know that same day it's the chance every wannabe dreams of imagine it Ethan sing you've got the goods but how can you get to the next level you've got to get in the room with the people who can make your dream happen Britney was in that room she had to deliver and boy did she ever however the fear of being rejected again like she was all those years ago with the Mickey Mouse Club must have been paramount in her mind just imagine her going into that audition it's one of those make-or-break situations I think we all face them in life whether it's a job interview a marriage proposal this was the moment that could make or break her she delivered big time she was immediately rejected by three labels they stated the public one in pop groups and not another Madonna no one was returning calls two weeks after the failed audition Larry Rudolph received a phone call from jive records who wanted to explore her vocals and highly commercial image after a second audition for jives executives Britney was signed to the label she immediately flew to Sweden to record her debut album the machine was created and Britney was ready to set the world on fire after a shopping mall promotional tour of her album Britney gave her first concert as an opening act for NSYNC and in January 1999 Britney made history ah baby one more time now yeah the record was great the video was spectacular you can't imagine them without the other there was something for everybody there I mean who can forget the pigtails the sexy schoolgirl outfit her fantastic so she got the male audience you know she got the the girl audience who saw her as a as a role model a figure to aspire to be like it was all represented there in in the video the song was great couldn't miss first time out put her into the stratosphere baby one more time debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 the album sold over 10 million copies worldwide in a year this was such an iconic song not only for the time period but it's the music that really established Britney as a global superstar overnight Britney Spears became an international sensation the label executives one of the music video to be animated however Britney rejected the idea in favor of a Catholic schoolgirl idea the video made history becoming one of the most played music videos of the 20th century we all go back and look at it remember she's dressed as a schoolgirl now originally they had her shirt you know all buttoned up and it was her idea to tie it up which makes it sweet and it also makes it sexy she had her little pigtails with the little pink feathered scrunchies in it as well but this is also where we see that Britney can truly dance she does a ton of choreography in the gym outside on the playground in the hallways [Music] tell me [Music] well I was I was hoping and I was you know dreaming that it was doing really really well but when at first you know when it debuted you know at such hot you know number on the charts I was really really you know overwhelmed I was really excited and really showcases that Britney was was more like a Madonna of her era she's someone that is an all-around performer the image of a sexy and innocent girl became a synonym of Britney Spears a label that she exploited thoroughly I think when Britney's kind of broke out with hit me baby one more time and you saw that very provocative racy video it was her kind of walking that line between [ __ ] and sexy and you know it she was so young and she looked so innocent and there was a sweetness to her in interviews that she was really forgiving [Music] but at the same time she managed to walk that delicate place between going too far and at the same time being sexy she managed to do it okay at that point and it was a huge success after a controversial Rolling Stone magazine cover in April 1999 where she was featured in her underwear holding a Teletubby Britney publicly announced she was to remain a virgin until marriage I may guess I am a virgin and I definitely want to try and have sex for Mary I just followed that specialist Emily Britney Spears is a marketing genius that Rolling Stone cover had it all it was straight from the playbook of how to launch a teen star it was sexually provocative it was it was naughty it was suggestive it's been done a million times before it was done a million times in future all the sort of publicity that Miley Cyrus is getting now is straight out of the Britney Spears playbook it's what she did it was the way to do it the statement would create an even greater buzz around her now the virginity comment was very interesting because it really played well in middle America in the Bible Belt the American heartland which was her the huge part of her audience in the United States will really have responded well to the virginity Comet did ironic really she's selling sex in a video but she's talking about purity in her interviews it sparks a national debate that's a formula that consistently seems to do well with men and and across the world so I think what Britney personified is something that resonated with a lot of young guys and young girls of course wanted to look like her but she was she was she was getting away with a lot of provocative stuff because of the fact that she was so publicly innocent and a good girl so she kind of got away with more than somebody else would have [Music] with the release of her second album oops I did it again in 2000 she cemented her position as Princess of Pop her second album debuted at number one and was nominated for Best Pop Vocal album and best female pop vocal performance at the 2000 Grammy most important thing and then I can come across when I'm in the studio and I can have attitude to ignore me [Music] after the 2000 VMAs and after much media speculation Britney confirmed a relationship between herself and former fellow musketeer Justin Timberlake the pop power couple was a perfect combination and it made headlines all over the globe she kisses another man what are your views on that it is what it is they gonna feel a pang of jealousy when you're in the well it's make you feel like a million dollars we'll leave it at that but you know you take it for what it's worth I mean it's just she's seen me do it and I'm sure doesn't make her feel awesome so my total you know no I'm not that type of person the relationship was highly publicized and followed they were the perfect pop couple it was that it was the romance that was surely destined to be and quite sad date they broke up I I think if they'd stayed together they would have been the royal couple of America nevermind Kate and William Britney and Justin would have been it I mean in Britain we have sort of posh and Becks they couldn't even compete with Britney and Justin it was natural they got together in the first place because they were both performers in the Mickey Mouse Club and it's like any relationship really you look for someone that you've got something in common with someone who understands you these two kids were in a very unusual situation only the two of them could really understand each other and what they were going through so they were an emotional crutch a support it turned to romance as well it seemed like the perfect relationship in 2001 Britney released her third studio album Britney once again her album debuted at number one on Billboard 200 the following year Britney was listed as the world's most powerful celebrity according to Forbes 2002 also saw Britney embrace another passion of hers acting crossroads is interesting it was an idea actually conceived by Britney Spears herself and what I love is the fact that the movie was written by Shonda Rhimes a lot of us know Shonda Rhimes from Grey's Anatomy it's just interesting to think that Shonda did Britney Spears first movie honestly this is I was on my third tour and I just wanted to try something different to see even if I could do something you know try the acting thing and I was really inspired by the script I really loved what the script was saying and I loved the whole relationship between the girls and the bond that they had so honestly I was inspired to do it because still to this day I still have my best friends three best friends Kourtney Lauren and Janssen and that's one of the things that you know I think that's inspiring to have that and I wanted to do the movie because I could kind of relate to it to saertex day uh you know there was a bunch of parts that were really hard for me to do because I couldn't relate to the fact that Lucy her mother you know totally abandoned her and so I really had to just you know go inside Lucy and try to envision what she was going through you know but I liked the fact though that it is really very emotional and it does steel with real teen issues so teenagers can see that and feel you know like whatever is going on in their world they'll be like they're not alone you know well honestly you know I knew totally going into this that there's always a chance of failure but you know I'm the type of person I have I'm willing to take that risk you know and I love crossroads and I love the whole story behind it and um something I want to put my heart into so I was reeling to take risk movie crossroads the 11 million dollar film ended up grossing over 57 million dollars worldwide and a lot of familiar faces are in the film we've got Zoe Saldana in one of her first roles you're also seeing Taryn Manning Kim katrell was in it dan Aykroyd was in it and so it's all these random actors all together supporting Britney in her very first acting role it's a female roadtrip movie he's got a little bit of love a little bit of mystery and of course finding friendship all those things that are great for teen movies I'm sorry never room with you guys do together you got to do stuff you know projects together would you like to hurt anything help with just skin the girl with the Midas touch was making it big time Britney Jean Spears was a global superstar worth over twenty million dollars she had it all fame fortune looks a massive loyal fan base and hit after hit it seemed nothing could stop Britney Spears in July 2002 and at her peak Britney surprisingly announced she was going to take a six-month break from her career the unexplained pause in her career left people speculating and eventually the confirmation arose that Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake had broken up what went wrong they were perfect together it was it was it was it was just seemed such a natural coupling but the thing is what goes wrong is they start off and it's just the two of them they're in the Mickey Mouse Club together they're each other's support system they both become successful suddenly they have people there's lots of barriers between them money gets involved fame maybe even a bit of professional jealousy there are other opportunities you know there are other people coming on to them both Britney and Justin in the media fishbowl with all the attention with all the attraction with all the temptation it was just too difficult for them to stay together this one was tough remember this is your first love and this was a big thing for Britney you know she was a solo artist he was in in sync they used to match each other and we're getting really like acid washed jeans type of outfits to the Grammys and things like that but there's a sweetness to that and unfortunately the rumors are that Britney stepped outside the relationship not only once but more than once with other people and eventually Justin Timberlake found out about it and they broke up and I think it's a little mara sing to admit to the whole world like my girlfriend cheated on me the pop power couple and childhood friends were no more no clear explanation about their breakup was ever given but in December of that year JT released the music video for Crimea River the video features a Britney look-alike and it rose suspicions that the reason for their breakup was Britney unfaithfulness JT was obviously very hurt by the breakup with Britney Spears rather than showing it in public he put it into a song they say that Living Well is the best revenge and whatever issues he had with Britney Spears the song he wrote inspired by their breakup Crimea River put him really into the big time and it's kind of ironic really that whatever she did inspired him to really go on to the a-list himself I think music was his way of speaking about it and after he left in sync and did his solo career this was a great opportunity to just sort of get his thoughts out and get it out there and the public and you know he had an actress that looked very similar to Britney in the video and you're like hmm [Music] [Music] [Music] despite the rumors Justin never spoke about the reason of their breakup if there's ever a moment where you ever need me you can rest assured that I would be there because I love you as a person and I will always do for you no matter what we say at this point people are going to speculate things in and we could I could really get myself in a horrible position if I was to say something and somebody misinterpreted because that happens all the time and I promise to her that I wouldn't say specifically that we broke up well for Britney and Justin you know it's a lot has been reported but the most the most plausible of all the rumors is the fact that Britney cheated on Justin Timberlake while they were together in fact Justin wrote a song about this he had a video where it was very obvious what was happening with a Britney look-alike there were lots of rumors about who Britney had cheated on Justin with but the most common one was an actual mutual friend of theirs who was Britney's choreographer the rumor is that it was Wade Robson who was a well-known choreographer not only for in sync but Backstreet Boys and Britney at that time and he worked with Michael Jackson years ago - that was probably the most likely candidate all that to say Justin was obviously devastated and broke up with Britney because of this incident and Britney spiral her downward spiral really can be traced back to that point in response to that song Britney wrote The Ballad every time which became one of the big hits of her next album [Music] [Music] during the opening of the 2003 MTV VMAs Britney performed like a virgin alongside Madonna and Christina Aguilera halfway through the performance they both kissed Madonna the incident was highly publicized there's no question in my mind whatsoever that Madonna used Britney at the MTV Awards for publicity for herself you know Madonna was the one singing Britney was there to support her and by kissing her in such a lingering fashion I think at that point both women were trying to get in the headlines you know there have been some great moments in the history of television there was the moon landing of course you know there were some classic Superbowl finishes but for me the VMAs where there was the kiss between Britney Madonna and Christina Aguilera is probably the most entertaining moment ever captured on camera it was fantastic it was like the zenith of showbiz it was one of those moments when the current generation of pop music and the previous generation of pop music come together when those lips locked it was magic and it really put Britney she was already in the big time it put it in the super big time it was almost like a handing of the torch if you will Madonna the previous pop queen she kisses Britney before she kisses Christina Aguilera it's like I have anointed you carry on darling you can take it from here she's been my idol since I was a little girl so I was a little nervous when I met her I was really a goob uh-oh so embarrassed I can't believe like you normally I'm really cool when I meet people I know she was like she is a dork I was so embarrassed I was so embarrassed if I could take that back I totally would but um no she had me starting her fourth studio album in the zone was released in November 2003 in this album Britney had more creative control by writing most of the tracks honestly think the fact that you know I took a year to do it and I just really took my time each song you really got inside my own head with this album and you know took my time with it to do it right and I think that in itself is the growth and you know maybe not personally I've matured but I know my work has matured hit singles like everytime outrageous and the collaboration with Madonna me against the music came from this album another top track was toxic which gave Britney the Grammy for Best Dance Recording [Music] despite her success the following years would become the hardest to date in Brittany's life in the beginning of 2004 Britney Spears pulled one of her most shocking stunts while in Las Vegas Britney and a childhood friend Jason Alan Alexander tied the knot in a shotgun wedding at the little white wedding chapel this was crazy this was a New Year's 2004 Britney went with Jason Alan Alexander an old friend from Kentwood Louisiana he you know she called him up and said hey why don't you come to Vegas with me they went you know they had hooked up they were never really boyfriend and girlfriend and they thought wouldn't it be fun after a few drinks to go get married and they went to the little white wedding chapel in Las Vegas and got married it lasted 55 hours which definitely beats the Kardashian you just couldn't do something and hope she could get away with it or a bit of a laugh the whole world was following her every move and when she decides to marry this childhood sweetheart in one of those weird decisions the world went crazy I remember getting the call I was working for a British national newspaper at the time and my first reaction was she did what now and so go straight over that story and then suddenly you know the lawyers were involved I think oh how can we annul this marriage sort of very quickly no one really took it seriously it was probably the first indication that we got that Britney Spears was completely unraveling the wedding made headlines all over the globe causing a media frenzy like no other the wedding was annulled within 55 hours and the news continued for weeks after yeah when Britney marry Jason Alexander the whole world reacted in shock because we didn't know who he was I mean we didn't even know she's been dating this guy what's interesting about that is you know Jason is from the same small town in Louisiana that Britney is a town of 2,600 people and that's what people in small towns do you know they marry some guy they went to school with when they were little kids and I think when Britney married Jason first of all she was rebounding from a very messy breakup with Justin Timberlake I think she wanted to be the first to move on very publicly and that was a big motivation for getting married so hastily but it was one of those things when they got home people were freaking out because they didn't have a prenuptial agreement in place and she's worth a fortune and he's just a local boy and it was one of those things they had to go and they had to get it in an old no Jason Alan Alexander swears he didn't make any money off of it but there's a rumor that he was paid off a little bit to go away I was looking at each other I was like let's go do something wild and crazy and let's go get married just for that you know but that wasn't the only wedding Britney would see in 2004 only a few months later Britney became engaged to one of her own backup dancers Kevin Federline the romance received intense attention since Federline had broken up with his former girlfriend who was pregnant with their second child at the time well Kevin Federline was a backup dancer for Britney on her Onyx Hotel Tour interestingly he'd also been a backup dancer for Justin Timberlake and NSYNC and you know when you Britney Spears who are you gonna meet it's not like you can't go to a bar and meet a guy it's not like you can enroll into online dating and put your profile up and also you're living in a fishbowl ders thousands of people outside your hotel the only people you're ever going to meet are those in your inner circle are the ones who work on your show you know an agent a manager a backup dancer the couple was heavily featured in reality show Britney and Kevin chaotic and they got married that year well Kevin Federline is like a lot of kind of non famous non successful people who end up with very very famous rich women you know Kevin was Britney's employee he was a backup dancer who's she paid to be on stage with her you see this happening a lot with very powerful successful women who liked to be in control of Madonna but you know with Kevin Federline I think for him it was like winning the lottery you know all of a sudden his boss who's a superstar kind of noticed him took him to her bed and all of a sudden he was promoted to boyfriend so for him I'm sure it was very heady he went from flying an economy to flying on the private jet with Brittany virtually overnight what's significant to me about the Kevin and Brittany relationship is how fast everything happened you know within weeks she was talking about marriage within months you know she was proposing to him saying let's get married before you know he actually per fish illipe reposed to her it there was a desperation about it to kind of get over the Justin thing get over the Jason disastrous short-lived marriage to show that she was really grown up there was nothing calm or rational about any of that in October that year Britney announced that she was going to take a break from her career to start a family after that announcement a few albums with greatest hits and remixes were released with some success in 2005 Britney became a mom after giving birth to Sean Preston Federline in early 2006 the paparazzi photographed Britney Spears driving with her son on her lap without a seatbelt instead of a car seat at one point she was seen with him on her lap while she's driving and he's not in a car seat he's not buckled in or anything else like that I mean I don't think that's anything we've seen since what nineteen fifty something but um you know people were really upset by this because if something had happens you know her son could have really been injured but she said I was in a situation I had to get in the car quickly the paparazzi were chasing me and I just felt I'd the need to keep my son as safe as possible not sure that was the way to do it but she took a lot of heat for that the pictures provoked anger and outrage amongst the family associations and child protection agencies now as a new mom you want to do as best as possible and sometimes these things happen so I just think it really shook her to the core she is a very active soccer mom her kids you see him out there on the soccer field and Britney is right there alongside cheering and clapping for them Sean Preston was born in 2005 and Jaden James was born in 2006 they're only a year apart almost to the day and you know even with some of the troubles that she's had she's always been concerned about her kids and they're her number one priority also that year Britney gave birth to a second child Jayden James Federline and only a few months later she filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences you could just see in the way they they spoke to each other and looked at each other at first that they were very much sort of into each other but um I think kevin federline had another goal and that was fame yes he he sort of really liked Brittany but then he really liked the media spotlight as well and he started to develop his own rap career he was starting to get his own 15 minutes of fame and he was looking beyond Brittany and very much in the mirror and towards his future as well and that was the start of the troll they agreed to shared custody of their children Brittany's career had been so full and successful up until that point but was now being overshadowed by her personal scandals but the worst was yet to come [Music] 2007 would be a year to forget in which Britney's fans family and friends feared for her life in February she was sent to a drug rehabilitation clinic where she stayed for only one day the very next night she went into a hair salon in Los Angeles and shaved her head with electric clippers the moment was captured by the media frenzy surrounding her and it showed the world how Britney had fallen down during the following weeks she admitted herself into other rehabilitation clinics in that year she also lost the custody of her children to Federline the reasons for the court decision were never revealed well for those of us who followed the day-to-day of Britney Spears it wasn't a total shock that when she had the what seemed to be some kind of psychotic break and shaved her head because we had seen before then a lot of very provocative behavior very erratic behavior going into stores in LA taking off all their clothes outside of the dressing room walking around naked there were all these rumors and reports coming back so when she ultimately did something so crazy it seemed I don't think we were entirely shocked but for a star of Britney's caliber to shave her head in such a way and then we saw those pictures of her you know brandishing like an umbrella like a weapon you know at someone's car she looks absolutely bonkers in the eyes yeah it was a shock you didn't expect that I think a lot of people were worried for Britney's life at that point because it seemed to be that something was going on psychologically that people weren't really sure she was going to come back from the fashion brand Louis Vuitton also sued Brittany for using counterfeit cherry blossom fabric in a music video the video was banned on European TV stations despite all of the hardship in her life Brittany released her fifth studio album blackout the album debuted at the top of the charts in most countries around the world the single give me more was performed by Britney during the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards the performance was panned by the critics but the single skyrocketed to worldwide success at the end of that year Britney would start a relationship with paparazzo Adnan Ghalib [Music] 2007 was a nightmare year for Brittany and 2008 wouldn't be much better in January Federline representatives were executing a court order Brittany refusing to relinquish custody of the children locked herself in a bathroom in her house and she didn't want to give her kids back so she locked herself in the bathroom with Sean Preston and Jaden James and said I'm not coming out I'm not giving the kids over these are my babies unfortunately the press started as this was happening the press started thinking wait a minute this must be drug-induced there's something going on here and she did let Sean Preston out of the bathroom but she kept Jayden James with her on and so people were concerned about Jayden is he gonna be okay is she in the her right mind or everything else like that and eventually emergency services was was called and she was taken away by ambulance what's called a psychiatric hold a 5150 here in California this was a really worrying moment I was one of the reporters sent to go and cover that story and we were really thinking oh dear this has really gone gone bad we could even see those of us who'd covered celebrity suicides that this could be the next step for Brittany and we would really worried you know especially those of us who were sore fans of hers have met her over the years she just seemed completely out of reach completely beyond help and when she's sort of locking herself away with with her kids you know this is this is bad Brittany's father stepped in after it looked like Brittany w'iskey they're gonna be hospitalized permanently or she was gonna lose all her money and if things have gotten very serious I mean there'd been the police have been called numerous times at one very famous incident where Brittany had locked herself in the bathroom with one of her boys and they had to take her into the hospital on us for a psychiatric evaluation she was like drawn away in a stretcher where you know and is practically in a straitjacket the following day Brittany's visitation rights were suspended Brittany was committed to the psychiatric ward of the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in a psychiatric hold after an emergency request the court placed her under temporary conservatorship of her father James Spears which gave him complete control over all her assets and affairs a very extreme decision by the courts which led the media to speculate that Britney had tried to take her own life at that point her parents who had been concerned but really unable to do very much it seemed went to the courts and demanded and asked for the fact that they could kind of care for her and the court at that time decided that in fact Britney's father could be her conservator which is something that you would do to a child or to someone who's not able to manage their own affairs personally or purport in terms of the money that she had and the courts doing that would only have been done if it was a very serious situation so you can be sure that there are things that Britney did or tried to do that we don't know about that would have happened that would have proceeded a dramatic decision like this there were reports of suicide attempts that was in the news of the world there were all kinds of unsubstantiated rumors about some of the dangerous things but you might be engaged in whatever it was it was serious enough that the court decided she should not be on her own [Music] after her release from the hospital Britney Jean came to an agreement with Federline's counsel and regained some visitation rights that year she also won three MTV VMAs with the song peace of me [Music] in December 2008 she released her sixth album circus Britney became the youngest female artist to have five albums debut at number one and got a place in the Guinness Book of World Records Britney was regaining her life back not only meeting success once again in her career but more importantly organizing her personal life and affairs and with the kind of structure she has right now she's doing well but if that's removed it's not clear that she would continue to do well and bear in mind there's more than a hundred million dollars at stake Britney has a huge fortune and a huge earning power there's an awful lot of money at stake and you can be sure that there are lots of people surrounding Britney who want to make sure she doesn't lose what she has in 2009 the Spears set a restraining order against former boyfriend Adnan Ghalib following suspicions of gali trying to control her assets but there were still some things that were lingering her former manager Sam lefty filed a lawsuit against her and then her dad had to file a counter lawsuit because he was harassing her during that year this singles womanizer and three became huge worldwide successes for Britney [Music] Brittany was getting stronger and stronger in all aspects of her life in 2011 she released her seventh studio album femme fatale the singles hold it against me until the world ends were among the successes of that album this is fantastic because you get glimpses of the old Britney you get the choreography you get you know she's really fit she looks sexy but she's really owning that she's a woman she's a mom now so it's not her like crawling around on the floor but it's her being sexy in her own way and I think it was a great way to remind fans that don't ever count Britney out she's still here [Music] come on DJ what you what you waiting for [Music] in 2012 Britney was hired as a judge for the second season of the American version of The X Factor her participation was funny as instead of being the sweet judge everyone was expecting Britney was fair and sometimes even ruthless the whole experience is just you know opened me up to so many different things and just how many gifted people that are out there it's been a really special experience for me after the successful participation in the X Factor Britney began working on her eighth studio album Britney Jean and enlisted will.i.am as an executive producer the album was released through RCA Records due to the disbandment of jive records this album was the last of her original contract the album had little impact and it's to this date the least successful album of her career the album's release coincided with the announcement of the much-anticipated Las Vegas residency at Planet Hollywood Brittney's show started in december 2013 and she will perform 100 dates for her adoring fans if you're a fan of Britney should go check out her her show at Planet Hollywood because it really gives you an idea of like she's had a really nice career he/she hit the scene in 1999 and here we are you know over a decade later and she's still relevant and people love her music they love watching her dance and there's still a sweetness to her no matter what struggle she's gone through she is still on top of her music game Britney Spears is trying to reinvent Las Vegas Vegas for the longest time has been seen as a sort of last haven for husbands it was for many years where people go at the end of their careers Britney is still at the middle of her career at least you would think Vegas is trying to attract a much younger audience Britney Spears is in the epicenter of that she's the only young star who headlines her own Vegas show and I wish her all the best with that it's certainly part of a marketing strategy for Vegas to bring the young people in despite all of her struggles and personal battles Britney managed to not only get her career back but also her own life she remains to this day a global icon for her millions of fans who stood by her side in the darkest hours of her life in January 2014 Britney won the award for favorite pop artist at the 40th People's Choice Awards a prize that recognizes the love of her fans for her life career and recovery well to be honest with you I'm somewhat surprised that Britney's lasted as long as she has I mean she's gonna be 30 years old and she's at the top of the charts so yes I would say that's a great deal of longevity in this business I mean will Katy Perry be there in ten years I don't know but Britney's spin around since she's 11 so she's done a great job and I think you know in some ways in a sick way Britney's breakdown actually probably extended her career another decade because people are very interested in seeing what happens next and her comeback and they want to see her success I think people would like to see her marry again maybe have more kids and maybe have a better go at that the second around Britney has already made music and television history once before and she's getting ready to do it all over again Britney Spears has been a total icon she represents bubblegum pop teen idol 'dom sexuality controversy drama in a way we've all of us grown up with Britney Spears we saw her as the pigtailed girl in the schoolgirl outfit then we saw the girl in psychiatric lockdown having real mental problems we saw the girl with the shaved head her life has been a soap opera and I think there's plenty more episodes to come this is my prediction for Britney you know she's got a two-year contract she's performing every month at Planet Hollywood but I feel like for a while this this is gonna be her swan song for now I think she wants to move back to Louisiana I feel like she wants to raise her kids she's in a relationship right now maybe she'll get married and have another baby um but I think she wants to step out of the limelight for a little while and just be a regular mom and just be a regular person and I think that's something that she really longs for and I think she'll come back eventually but I think maybe she'll take five years off or something everybody likes to see a comeback and you know Britney Spears was down but she wasn't out she got some help she has new boyfriends she's got her parents supporting her um you know I think everyone would like to see Britney back to where she was before you know she's back in shape we've seen her you know really reclaim her fitness in her body and I think everyone would like to see her happy we want to see her succeed we want to see her back to where she was we want to see all those horrible years put behind her and as Britney approaches her 30th birthday it would be great to see this as a new decade a new beginning and and really kind of a return to normalcy for for a very very public figure despite all Britney Jean Spears remains to this day the Princess of Pop you know who doesn't love Britney [ __ ] [Music]
